(communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

ThE useful properties of k6-Alfenol and the thermenol alloys (summarized by J. E. Nachman and W. J. Buehler') have encouraged research into those alloys which, having compositions near 25 at. pct Al, 75 at. pct Fe, undergo an ordering transformation between 500° and 550°C. The equilibrium diagram of the iron-rich iron-aluminum alloys was first determined by Bradley and Jay.2,3 They distinguished three structures: the disordered, which is bcc; FeAl, which is simple cubic with one Fe atom and one Al atom per lattice site; and Fe3Al, which is fcc with three Fe atoms and one Al atom per lattice site. This last structure may be conceived as eight body-centered cubes with Al atoms at the centers of alternate ones, so that Al atoms have only Fe as first and second nearest neighbors. Later, Osawa and Murata4 determined the boundaries of the different superlattice regions in the iron-rich Fe-Al solid solution by dilatometric and X-ray methods. Two of the six phases, which they found between 0 and 50 at. pct Al, were never identified by other workers. A. Taylor and R. M. ones,' concurrently with and independently of this research, redetermined this diagram by measuring lattice parameters at temperature. Further reference will be made to their results. EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM A) Experimental Procedure—The alloys were prepared from NRC gas-free iron (99.9 pct Fe) and 99.99 pct Al. They were melted in alumina' crucubles under vacuum in an induction furnace. If the ingots were unsound or showed more than a 3 pct weight loss, they were rejected. The ingots were homogenized at 1100°C for 24 hr before hot-rolling at 700" to 900°C from 1 in. to 0.25 in. thick. It is interesting to note that alloys containing more than 28 at. pct Al were able to take an 80 pct reduction of area in the ordered FeAl region. The dilatometer specimens and specimens for chemical analysis were cut from these plates. A Leitz dilatometer was used to measure the coefficient of linear expansion as a function of temperature. The specimens were slowly cooled from 900" to 300°C where they were annealed for 10 hr before slowly cooling to room temperature. The expansion was recorded photographically as the alloys were heated and cooled at 1.5oC per min between 100" and 1000°C. The magnetic measurements determining the Curie points were performed on the dilatometer specimens in the dilatometer, by using direct current in the furnace windings both to heat the specimen at 1.5°C per min and to serve as the primary coil. The regular specimen holder was replaced by a thin alundum tube on which was wound, as a secondary, a closely spaced coil of fine copper wire. A reversal of current in the furnace windings produced, in the secondary, an emf which was proportional to the induction in the specimen, and which could be detected on a galvanometer. In this way, it was possible to determine the Curie points of alloys to within * 5°C. B) Results and Discussion—The coefficients of linear expansion, as obtained from the dilatometer curves, are plotted as a function of temperature and composition in Fig. 1. Since in many cases the heating and cooling curves were superimposed, it was decided to measure slopes of heating curves only. Definite high peaks, due to the transformations, were observed on each curve between 400" and 520°C, and, for alloys containing more than 23 at. pct Al, a second set of smaller peaks at temperatures above 660°C. The sharpness of the peaks indicates that ordering to Fe3Al is a first-order reaction. The compositions and the temperatures of these peaks are listed in Table I. THE present organization of Copper Queen employ-ees, known as the Employees' Conference Com-mittee, is really an outgrowth of the former Grievance Committee, which, in turn, had developed from the original Hospital Committee. The relatively small membership of these older organizations, the practical limitation of their activities to the presenting of grievances, and their lack of initiating powers, were the principal defects which the plan now in operation seeks to overcome. A somewhat parallel scheme was instituted in our Sacramento Hill division about four years ago; this gradually developed into the Ways and Means Committee, which, in addition to providing a forum for the discussion of operating problems, was instrumental in establishing an excellent and mutually satisfactory bonus system. Before recommending adoption of the plan now in force, we made extensive inquiries among those who have had any experience in such matters, and ended by proposing a modification of a scheme developed by John Leitch,1 which was characterized by its similarity to the constitution of the Federal Government. As finally remodeled, the. plan was submitted to vote of the entire working forces at the Copper Queen mines, and was adopted by them in May, 1920. Mining opera-tions since that date have been so interrupted that it is scarcely possible to state exactly what the results have been. The following quotations are from a printed pamphlet containing the constitution of the organization, as finally adopted. The first extract is from a letter addressed by the management to the employees: The plan submitted for your approval and adoption is modeled after the constitution of our own country, under which every individual is given an opportunity for advancement, according to his ability and determination, and every citizen is given a voice in the laws that shall govern him. So it is to encourage the individual employee in advancement, and to give him a voice in making the rules that shall govern his conduct, that we favor the adoption of the proposed constitution.

Three years ago, when Sun Energy Development Co. (Sunedo) dedicated its Cordero mine in Wyoming, the company noted that its decision to venture into the coal industry was prompted by the need for domestic energy self-sufficiency. Now, as the energy situation assumes crisis proportions and the cry For coal intensifies, Sunedoo has begun a $21 million expansion program that will double the mine's productive capacity by the mid-1980s. When the Cordero come was originally conceived, Sunedoo obtained permission from permitting authorities to produce up to 11 million t/y (12 million stpy) of coal. But seeing opportunities in the coal market, Sunedoo returned to the agencies in 1976 and came away with permission to produce 22 million t/y (24 million stpy). Of that total permitted capacity, Cordero is expected to produce about 3.6 million tons (4 million st) this year.

The steady-state creep behavior of poly crystalline cad mi inn was studied over a temperature range of (1.56 to 0.94 Tm. Two distinct mechanisms were found to occur over this temperature range. They were described by: where and represerqt the minimum strain rates corresponding to the low- and high-temperature regions, respectirely. The two regions of constant acti11ation energy were connected by a transition region where the strain rate was controlled by both mechanisms acting in parallel. At temperatures below a transition temperature of about 0.7 Tm the agreement between the activation energy value for creep and that for self-diffiision suggests a rate-controlling mechanism of dislocation climb. For cadwzium, steady-state creep at temperatures above 0. 7 Tm appears to be controlled by another mechanism, perhaps involving the behavior of dislocation jogs. FRENKEL et al.1 studied the high-temperature creep of polycrystalline cadmium and reported an activation energy of 21 kcal per mole for the 0.5 Tm < T < 0.8 Tm range. Based on observations of creep rate at only two temperatures, a value of 22.1 kcal per mole was determined by Medbury. These two investigations were for the purpose of showing agreement between the activation energy for creep and that for self-diffusion, reported3 as 18.2 and 19.1 kcal per mole, respectively, for diffusion parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal axis. Gilman4 investigated prismatic glide in single crystals of cadmium over a higher-temperature range of 0.72 to 0.93 Tm, and found an activation energy of 29 kcal per mole. He also reported5 an activation energy higher than that of self-diffusion for prismatic glide in zinc single crystals deformed at temperatures near the melting point. This value was in good agreement with those found for an equivalent temperature range by Flinn and Munson6 and by Tegart and sherby7 for polycrystalline zinc. These two independent studies also disclosed at lower temperatures another value of activation energy near that for self-diffusion. It would be expected from the creep results on zinc and single-crystal cadmium that creep studies on polycrystalline cadmium, extended to temperatures near the melting point, might yield an activation-energy value higher than the 22 kcal per mole value found in earlier studies. The purpose of this paper is to report the steady-creep behavior of polycrystalline cadmium over a temperature range of approximately 0.5 to 0.9 Tm EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The cadmium used in this study was obtained in the form of as-cast rods, 0.5 in. diam, through the courtesy of the Bunker Hill Mining Co. The material was of 99.995 pct purity, as determined by spectro-chemical analysis. The creep specimens, which were 0.250 in. diam by 0.400 in. long and annealed at 300°C for 45 min to produce a stable average grain diameter 0.25 mm, were tested in compression using an apparatus similar to that described by Sherby.8 The specimen temperature was controlled to within ±0.5°C with the help of appropriate constant-temperature baths. The applied stress was maintained within 1.0 pct of the desired value by the additions of lead shot at fixed strain increments. No barreling was observed over the strains encountered during testing. Isothermal creep tests9 were used in the study with only a few differential temperature tests10 run for comparison purposes. Steady-state creep data were obtained over a temperature range of 60 to 287°C (0.56 to 0.94 Tm) at five stress levels ranging from 28.1 to 140.6 kg per sq cm. RESULTS The minimum or steady-state creep rate may be described by an equation of the following form:" where i is the minimum strain rate, S is the structure factor, F is a stress function, Qc is the energy of activation, T is the absolute temperature, and R is the gas constant. The minimum strain rates obtained in this study for cadmium were recorded on a semilogarithm plot as a function of the reciprocal absolute temperatures for the various stress levels, as shown in Fig. 1. This figure shows a characteristic transitional behavior" with a parallel interaction of two mechanisms. It is obvious that the activation energies corresponding to the individual processes are insensitive to stress because the curves are parallel. The discrete activation-energies values for the low- and high-temperature regions for the various stress levels are reported in Table I, and were determined by the least-mean-square method. In preparing this paper it has been the aim of the writer to keep the problems of both producers and consumers in mind. Until now, no attempt has been made to familiarize each group with the other&apos;s practice and limitations. This paper is an effort to acquaint the readers with some of the factors pertaining to the problem and cost of mining and preparing steam coal, and also to the economics of producing steam with such coal. In recent years all lines of endeavor have turned to intensive mechanization in order to lower the unit cost of production. The average fuel consumption in steam electric generating stations has dropped in 20 years from 4.0 lb. to 1.4 lb. per kilowatt-hour; while the modern power station can generate 1 kw-hr. on a fraction under 1 lb., or 13,000 B.t.u. coal. Also, the amount produced per man has in that same period risen from 3.8 to 8.2 tons, owing to the use of modernized equipment below ground for coal cutting, drilling, shooting, loading, hauling and hoisting. Unfortunately, the rapid speed of 5 tons per minute of operation at which the coal is loaded mechanically precludes any appreciable removal of impurities at the coal face, so that the raw coal is hoisted containing a markedly higher percentage of impurities than the hand-loaded coal, which was subjected to the scrutiny of the miner during loading. Also, during the past 20 years, certain seams of coal lying close to the surface have been made economically available by the improved design of electrically operated shovels and draglines for the removal of overburden running as high as 56 ft. This strip coal frequently contains so much ash in the raw state (Table 1) that it would have no sales value. Therefore, coal preparation must be adopted to beneficiate the raw product. Some seams in the United States have a decreasing ash content with decreasing size, owing, in all probability, to the fact that the coal is friable while the impurities are hard, causing a concentration of the low-ash material in the fine sizes. Illinois No. 6 coal being rather hard, naturally the reverse is true.

The deformation mechanisms occurring in polycrys-talline, commercially pure titanium and a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been investigated and compared to earlier results by Levine on high-purity titanium single crystals and by Conrad on commercially pure titanium. In accord with Levine, two consecutive deformation mechanisms are observed to exist below 500°K with the transition temperature between mechanisms, Tc, strongly dependent upon interstitial composition. T, is found to be 210°. 375° -430°, and 450°K for alloys A large number of investigations have been conducted to determine the rate-controlling mechanisms of plastic deformation occurring in fcc and bcc metals. Very few investigations of a similar nature have been conducted for hexagonal metals. In fact, until very recently, magnesium is the only hexagonal metal which has been systematically investigated for determination of the rate-controlling deformation mechanisms.1"3 From these investigations, it was concluded that basal slip below 420°K occurs by the intersection of forest dislocations,1&apos;3 while for prismatic slip the Peierls mechanism is rate-controlling at low temperatures with interstitial compositions of 0.024, 0.42, 0.61, and 1.13 at. pct expressed in terns of oxygen equivalents. The low-temperature mechanism is found to be an impurity obstacle mechanism in contrast to Levine&apos;s earlier conclusion of the Peierls barrier. Measurement of the activation parameters for deformation and estimation of the force-distance profile of the obstacles show their retarding force to be effective over longer distances from the obstacle as the interstitial composition increases. and thermally activated cross slip at higher temperatures. 2 The potential technological importance of titanium alloys has prompted recent studies of the deformation and fracture characteristics of titanium and its alloys. 4-8 Levine&apos; systematically investigated the low-temperature deformation behavior of high purity titanium single crystals oriented for either basal or prismatic slip. It was concluded that the Peierls mechanism was rate-controlling at temperatures below 210°K, while above this temperature an undefined mechanism was rate-controlling. Conrad 7,8 concluded from an analysis of the composition dependence of the critical shear stress at 0°K and measurement of the activation parameters that the low-temperature deformation of titanium is controlled by an impurity

Then, as a steel is taken from the fire, the grain condition is as shown in Fig. I. After the forging operation has been performed the condition shown by Fig. 2 exists. The heating operation to harden the cutting edge produces the effect shown in Fig. 3. The questions that naturally arise are: Will the cost of the extra heat treatment necessary to change this condition (annealing) be more than the saving that may be effected in the drill steel or will the extra heating be an economical as well as a wise thing to do? Is this condition necessarily detrimental to the maximum service of the drill steel? Can this annealing action be obtained in the hardening heat by heating more of the bit, say at least 5 in., to the hardening temperature but quenching only the end of the bit by a shallow immersion? Short Rock-drill Steels Reclaimed by Welding By W. T. Ober, Lynn, Mass. Experimental tests by the Thompson Company have shown that short lengths of rock-drill steels may be reclaimed by electric butt welding. The drills used in the experiments were hollow drills l1/4-in. in diametcr containing 0.95 per cent. to 1.05 per cent. carbon. The ends to be joined must first be ground off fairly square and the greater part of the rust, scale, etc. removed for 3 or 4 in. back in order to insure good electrical contact with the dies of the welder and countersunk, with an 80° countersink, approximately 1/4 in. The steels are then clamped in the copper dies of the welder, so that a length projects from the inside edge of each pair of dies equivalent to from one-half to three-quarters the diameter of the drill. The drills should also be brought into accurate alignment. The first step is to bring the ends into close proximity and then close the primary circuit of the transformer, slowly bringing the steels together until their ends lightly touch, when they will "flash," that is, minute

AT present the demands of the United States for strontium are met by imports from Germany, England and Canada, which vary considerably in proportions of ore and finished salts, in tonnage and in value. Statistics for the period 1926-1932 are given in Table 1. These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi-gation of the mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation in the spring of 1934. STUDIES of roof and floor movement are of interest to those actively engaged in mining. This is especially true in the case of an entirely new area where there is no precedent for guidance. The potash deposit being mined is in the southeast corner of New Mexico, about 20 miles east of Carlsbad. The deposit was formed by the land-locked, shallow, Permian Sea that extended through parts of western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, southeastern Colorado, and eastern New Mexico. The saline deposits vary from 500 to 4000 ft. thick. Neither of the companies operating in this area has delimited its com-mercial ore bodies. As all production so far has been from Federal and State leases, the Department of the Interior and the State of New Mexico have a direct interest in the development and extraction of these ore horizons. The ore is composed of an intimate mechanical mixture of sylvite (potassium chloride) and halite (sodium chloride). It lies generally in a horizontal bed varying from 5 to 12 ft. in thickness, and has a cover of approximately 1000 ft., consisting of about 500 ft. of salt beds and 500 ft, of sediments. The immediate mine roof for several feet is principally salt with some potash and clayey material. The next 500 ft. above, from the standpoint of structure, may be considered rock salt with a few inter-bedded potash members. The upper 500 ft. is of sedimentary (Permian and Triassic) origin and contains several water-bearing formations with flows varying from 10 to 500 gal. per minute. This water intensifies the interest in convergence problems as the ore and surrounding for-mations are water soluble. Potash salt (sylvite) and rock salt (halite) are plastic minerals. Plasticity is defined as a "property of solids by virtue of which they hold their shape permanently under the action of small shearing stresses but are readily deformed, worked, or molded under larger stresses."1

These deposits are large enough to command interest, par-ticularly in consideration of future cheap power at the Boulder Dam. The deposits described in this paper were examined during an investi¬gation of the, mineral resources of the Boulder Dam region by the United States Geological Survey for the United States Bureau of Reclamation&apos; in the spring of 1934. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Permeation rates of hydrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured at temperatures from 1300" to 2600°C with hydrogen pressure differentials of 1 and 0.1 atm across isothermal membranes. Rates were nearly Proportional to square root of pressure, were inversely ProPortional to membrane thickness, and were temperature-dependent according to the equation: p = permeation coefficient in cu cm (stp)-mm per sq cm-min-atmlr2, R = gas constant in cal per mole-OK, T = absolute temperature in OK. Permeation rates of oxygen through tungsten were deternlined in the range 1965" to 2300°C and at calculated oxygen (02) pressures of 3.3 x 10-4 to 2.2 x at?n using sealed capsules containing Kmown quantities of tungsten oxide. Permeation coefficients obtained in this manner had a temperature dependency in the range of 40 to 45 kcal per mole of permeating species. Permeation coefficients for oxygen were higher than those for hydrogen in the temperature range studied. This is probably the result of oxygen solubility being much greater than hydrogen solubility at these temperatures at a gzven pressure. The purpose of this investigation was to determine experimentally the permeabilities of hydrogen and oxygen through polycrystalline tungsten at temperatures ranging from 1300° to 2600°C. Permeation rates of hydrogen through tungsten have been measured at temperatures up to 925°C,but no previous measurements have been reported for the temperature range covered in this investigation. Some diffusion measurements3&apos;&apos; and solubility measurements3 have been made for hydrogen at temperatures below 2200°C. No previous permeability studies of oxygen through tungsten are known to the authors; however, efforts have been made to determine diffusion rates5-&apos; and solubilities PERMEATION THEQRY Permeation has been defined by ortton" as the overall steady-state flow process from the gas phase on one side of a membrane or wall to the gas phase on the other side and includes the steps of adsorption, solution, diffusion, exsolution, and desorption; in a given temperature range, any of these processes may be rate-controlling. For diatomic gases, which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at a given temperature is directly proportional to the surface area of the membrane, the length of time of permeation, and the difference between the square roots of the pressures on each side of the membrane, and it is inversely proportional to the thickness of the membrane when diffusion-controlled, thus: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, p = temperature-de pendent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane exposed, / = time, p i = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, d = thickness of membrane. When the surface reactions are not rate-controlling steps and the solution of the gas in the metal follows Henry&apos;s law, the permeation coefficient, P, is equal to the product of diffusivity and solubility. The permeation coefficient is also temperature-dependent according to the equation: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, T = absolute temperature. MATERIALS The tungsten materials used in this investigation were greater than 99.9 pct pure. The interstitial impurities ranged from < 1 to 50 pprn C, 7 to 35 ppm O, less than 15 pprn N, and undetectable quantities of hydrogen. Previous high-temperature studies of are-cast tungsten have shown that thermal treatment similar to that which the hydrogen permeation cells experienced reduces the carbon content from starting levels of 50 to 60 ppm to about 30 ppm. Metallic impurities were in the low (1 to 50) ppm range. The argon gas used in this investigation contained about 8 ppm N. None of the following gases were

A simple method is described for determining the orientation of a single crystal by means of a cylindr cal X-ray camera. Orientation setting to within ±1 deg is attainable by a stereographic analysis of a single cylindrical Laue pattern produced by the originally randomly mounted crystal. Final precision adjustments which permit orientation of the crystal to within ±5 min of arc from the desired position can be made by the method of Weisz and Cole. A chart, originally Presented by Schiebold and schneider7 and which allows a direct reading of the two stereographic polar coordinates of the corresponding pole of a given Laue spot, has been recomputed to aid in the stereographic interpretation of the cylindrical Laue X-ray photograph. Detailed instructions for the use of the chart, a simple example, and a comparison with the conventional flat-film Laue Methods, are presented. 1 HE problem of determining the orientation of the unit cell of a single crystal relative to a set of fixed external reference coordinates is fundamental to most problems of X-ray crystallography and to many experimental studies of the structure-sensitive physical properties of crystalline materials. Several techniques for measuring these orientation relations have been developed which correlate optically observable, orientation-dependent physical properties to the unit cell. Examples of such procedures include the observation of cleavage faces or birefringence, as discussed by bunn,1 or the examination of preferentially formed etch-pits, as discussed by barrett.2 Each of these methods is limited, for various reasons, to an orientation accuracy of approximately ±1 deg—a serious limitation in some experimental studies. Several other limitations decrease the generality of these methods. Of these, perhaps most notable is the absence in many crystals of the physical property necessary for the orientation technique. The most widely used methods for determining crystal orientation are variations of the Laue X-ray diffraction method. Because of the indeterminacy of the X-ray wavelength diffracted to a given spot, the interpretation of Laue photographs is now limited almost exclusively to the procedure of using a chart to determine the angular coordinates of the corresponding pole for each spot. For the flat-film geometries, either a leonhardt3 or a Dunn-Martin4 chart is used in interpreting transmission patterns, whereas a greninger5 chart is used for interpreting back-reflection patterns. A less common method of interpreting flat-film transmission Laue photographs is by comparing the Laue pattern with the Majima and Togino standards,6 or with the revised standards prepared by Dunn and Martin.4 Although this last method is applicable only to crystals with cubic symmetry, it can be very rapid and just as accurate as the graphical methods. The primary limitation of all the X-ray methods mentioned is the relatively small number of Laue spots and zones which are recorded on the flat film. Often, few, if any, major poles appear, thus making interpretation tedious and sometimes uncertain. The use of a cylindrical film eliminates this problem. Schiebold and schneider7 prepared a chart by which the orientation of the specimen crystal could be determined from a cylindrical Laue photograph. However, it was only drawn in 5-deg intervals of each of the two angular variables used to identify the Laue spots, thus limiting the accuracy of orientation to about ±3 deg. An examination of this chart indicated that if it were drawn in 2-deg intervals, crystal orientations to ±1 deg would be attainable. Subsequent use of the replotted chart has confirmed this accuracy. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the redevelopment and use of this chart, and to point out its advantages and limitations. I) CAMERA GEOMETRY AND CHART CALCULATIONS The geometry of the cylindrical camera with a related reference sphere is shown in Fig. 1. The X-ray beam BB&apos; pierces the film at the back-reflection hole B, strikes the crystal at 0, and the transmitted beam leaves the camera at the transmission hole T. One of the diffracted X-rays intersects the film at a Laue spot L. The normal OP to the diffracting plane bisects the angle BOL between the incident and diffracted X-ray beams. The point P on the reference sphere can be located uniquely by the two orthogonal motions 6 and 8 on the two great circles ENWS and BPQT respectively. Because the Bragg angle 8 (= 90 - < BOP) is always less than 90 deg, P always remains in the hemisphere BENWS. Therefore, if every possible pole P is to be recorded on the same stereographic projection, it is necessary that the projection reference point be at T with the projection plane tangent to the sphere at B.* The great
