This work was first undertaken for the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1919-20, by C. E. Julihn, superintendent of the station at Minneapolis. Learning of the interest, in this subject, of B. F. Tillson, of the New Jersey Zinc Co., Mr. Julihn and Mr. Foley went to Franklin, N. J., and discussed the matter with him. A conference in Chicago, in November, 1920, was attended by Dr. F. G. Cottrell, who was then Director of the Bureau of Mines, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines and of the hlissouri School of Mines and Metallurgy; at this time a cooperative plan of work was agreed upon by the Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines. In February, 1921, Mr. 'Tillson arranged a conference on this subject at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, at which several technical papers were presented. In a paper, the Breakage and Heat Treatment of Hock Drill Stcels, he suggested a program that might be carried out in connection with the investigation of the problem. At this conference Mr. Manning, former Director of the Bureau of Mines, suggested the formation of an advisory committee to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards for prosecution of this investigation. On Feb. 20, 1922, a secoud conference in New York, at the time of the annual meeting of the American Institute of mlining and Metallurgical Engineers, was attended by representatives of various technical societies. At this meeting, the report of Nov. 20, 1921, of the Chiefs of Divisions of Metallurgy of the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards, was discussed and it was agreed: 1. That the survey recommended by the two bureaus should be undertaken, which survey would have for its object the ascertaining of the present status of the practice of the heat treatment of drill steels, the extent to which the breakage occurs, etc.; and 2. That a report should be presented, of the findings of those who made the survey, to the Advisory Board to the Bureaus of Mines and of Standards. Those interested in the early developments and experiments, both in the United States and abroad, that led to modern rock dusting, will find an excellent summary in a paper by George S. Rice,13 published in 1914. The period from 1914 to 1924 was one of intensive experiment on coal-dust explosions in the United States; abroad, war activities and rehabilitation stopped this work over a large part of that decade. American findings were published by the Bureau of Mines, particularly in Bulletins 167 and 268. It is convenient to consider that in the United States rock dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines was initiated in 1924 with the publication of tentative specifications.17 This was followed in 1925 by an investigation of methods and costs12 and approval by the American Engineering Standards Committee of a Recommended American Prac-tice.18 Approximately 13 years have elapsed since this approval, and inasmuch as changes in rock-dusting practice in the United States have been evolutionary, it is necessary to consider this entire period as "recent" in some phases of the work. There have been no official changes in the Recommended American Practice since its approval. This paper reviews as briefly as possible knowledge acquired since the issue of the earlier papers mentioned, through experience in mines and experiments conducted by different organizations engaged in the promotion of mine safety. Size of Rock Dust The Recommended American Practice states that the dust shall be 100 per cent minus 20-mesh and 50 or more per cent minus 200-mesh. Results of large-scale tests on the relative effectiveness of rock dust of different sizes were published by the Bureau of Mines15 in 1933 and are reproduced here as Fig. 1. Certain American operators bclieve that desulphurizing in the ladle offers a means of increasing blast-furnace and open-hearth yields with the possibility of improvements in quality of the steel. In fact, several producers have experimented with practically all of the known desulphurizing agents, including both standard grades of the alkalies and special preparations that have been offered from time to time during the past several years. Some of these are regularly being used today in large-scale commercial operations, with good results. Also, it is the practice to treat off-sulphur casts in the blast-furnace ladle at a number of plants. It is not known, however, that anyone in the steel industry (American) has ever adequately equipped a plant for desulphurizing blast-furnace metal in an efficient manner as regular operating practice. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of correct equipment and proper handling for obtaining uniform and efficient results. As will be shown, at the temperature of molten iron the alkalies are instantly neutralized by any free slag present, dissipating their desulphurizing value. Entrained silicates are rapidly washed out of the metal bath by the highly basic soda slags and will be satisfied ahead of desulphurizing reactions with FeS. More or less of the reagent will always be used up through reactions with the refractory lining. Desulphuriza-tion will be limited to the action of the free alkali then remaining in the slag. Causes for the erratic results generally found with desulphurizing tests in blast-furnace transfer ladles would include, among other things, variations in the quantity of furnace slag coming down with the metal, and differences in the percentage of kish and entrained silicates in the different casts. As the alkalies instantly unite with any free slags or silicates present, these, with any kish coming off, both dilute the reagent and reduce the surface contact between the slag and metal, thereby retarding the desulphurizing reactions.

The recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena of cold-worked metals have considerable industrial importance because of their role in the fabrication of metals. For this reason, and because of the general academic interest in the subject, these processes have received considerable attention since the time of J. E. Stead's paper1 on The Crystalline Structure of Iron and Steel. There are considerable differences of opinion regarding the theory of recrystallization and grain growth and also differences in the observation of the modus operandi of the processes themselves. The value of many of the existing quantitative data on grain growth is decreased by the failure to distinguish between the grain sizes just after complete recrystallization and those resulting from coalescence. For this reason also, the value of the diagrams of stable grain sizes, like those produced by Bass and Glocker2 and Czochralski3, is lessened in so far as an interpretation of the facts of recrystallization is concerned. It is hoped that the data presentcd in this paper will help to clarify and to simplify the facts relating to recrystallization, and at the same time will show that some of the present-day conceptions are untenable. A paper on the theory of recrystallization, with additional data, will be completed in the near future by the writers. Since the literature on the subject has been adequately and frequently reviewed, the only referenccs to it in this paper will be those necessary in the discussion of the data presented.

Hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature 01 the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schuelerl by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva. nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase. Since the extensive review of the iron-zinc alloys presented a few years ago,3 much new work has been published, some of which5-l6 was too late to be included in the recent edition (1939) of the American Society for Metals' Handbook.4 Figs. 1 and 2 are reproductions of the latest iron-zinc diagram proposed by Schramml1 as a result of his investigations by microscopic, thermal, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray methods. Table 1 summarizes all the known published X-ray data of the phases Present. The solubility of iron in zinc has been determined by x-ray methods.10 In the same manner the homogeneity range of the P phase was studiedlo using the principle that the parameter of an intermetallic compound changes while the concentration of One of the constituents changes. Schramm10 has found some 80 alpha lines in X-ray powder photograms of phase d1, and from these he believes that this phase is related to the P phase. Previous investi-

It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly some of the considerations that enter into the economics of so-called recycling, the generic designation of the relatively recently developed process by which a condensate† is separated from gas-distillate gas at high pressure and the residual gas returned to the reservoir. This subject necessarily embraces not only a discussion of factors that should be considered in projecting a recycling operation, such as estimating reserves, investment and operating costs, but also a comparison of condensate with other types of petroleum. The place of condensate in its relation to the total supply of crude oil is pointed out as well as certain logical methods of product disposal. The cost of drilling wells and lease maintenance is not pertinent to this discussion because income and revenue are in this paper confined to that retained by the plant or plant operator for supplying processing facilities for the gas. Before the development of recycling a great many gas-distillate gas fields in Louisiana and Texas provided no income to their owners. When gas was sold from these reservoirs it was accompanied by irretrievable losses of condensate in the formation. The understanding of the func- tion of retrograde condensation resulted in the introduction of a new commercial petroleum recovery process for these hitherto unexploited fields and now permits the conditioning of this type of wet gas field for the sale of dry gas therefrom without waste. Some Economic Factors The study of a gas-distillate field for possible exploitation necessarily involves the critical appraisal of a number of elements, chief of which will be discussed here: (I) estimate of distillate in place, (2) estimate of distillate that can be brought to the surface, (3) available market, (4) costs. The considerations affecting the estimating of distillate reserves in place are in the main subject to the same errors as are involved in determining dry gas reserves. Determinable data including acreage, sand thickness, reservoir pressure, reservoir temperature, porosity and connate water provide the basis for calculating the volume of gas in place. Ample allowance must be made for connate water, which may occupy from 20 to 35 per cent of the pore space of the sand. The factor of supercom-pressibility is to a considerable extent nullified by the reservoir temperature. It has been considered well advised to allow this factor to serve as a cushion. With the gas reserves calculated, it remains only to assay the distillate content of the gas. SO commonplace that they are seldom noticed, mining-machinr, bits have a definite and important bearing on the cost of coal production. At the average mine many thousands of bits are used during the year. The actual cost represented by the purchase of the bits used, as well as that of sharpening and handling them, represents a considerable sum of money. From the point of view of indirect costs they are important, as the lack of good bits at a mining machine can seriously impair production. Good bits tend to ensure an adequate supply of coal. Classes OF Bits Mining-machine bits may be divided into three general classes, based on shape and method of use: (I) chisel, (2) pick-point and (3) one-use. The chisel and pick-point bits are shown in Fig. I. The so-called "chisel" bits were made of steel of various sizes and were sharpened to a wide chisel cutting edge. Few of this type of bit are used, except in places where coring is very bad. Sometimes chisel bits are used with standard bits to help cut out the core. The "pick-point" bit is widely used today. Normally it is made from ½ by I-in. steel, is about 4½ in. long when new, has a rake angle of about 25°, a front clearance of about 23O, a side clearance of approximsteji 8".' There are many variations in the shape of this bit, depending on the ideas of the individual that may be dressing the dies of the bit machine. This bit has been generally used for many years and at present, in one form or another, is by far the most popular bit used in coal mines. This bit usually is made from 0.85 carbon steel, although in recent years some alloy-steel bits have made their appearance. At present, carbon-steel bits are frequently tipped in. hard facing materials. A third class of bits might be called the L'one-use" bit; that is, a small bit that is used once and then thrown away. These bits have two or three points, are usually made from 0.85 carbon steel and sometimes from higher alloys. Recently some. of them have been tipped with hard facing material. The BBU - rotary hearth treats lead concentrates and battery scrap by the roast-reaction process. It corresponds in principle to the long-known Newnam hearth, however its hearth-basin is not straight but curved to a closed ring. In operation this annular hearth is filled with liquid lead and rotates around a central blast-box. The charge, heated to a glowing-red, floats on top of the lead bath, into which air is blown from the blast-box through a horizontal slot-type tuyere. Ore pellets and brown coal are continuously charged onto the reacting mass from two storage bins. Lead is set free by the roasting reactions and trickles through the charge into the lead bath from where it is tapped from time to time. The reacting mass is continuously stirred by a mechanical agitator and backed, by a mechanical shovel, against the water-jacketed wall of the blast-box. The gangue of the charge forms lumps of scorified character, the so-called hearth slag or grey slag, which are discharged from the hearth. The waste gases are collected in a hood and conducted to a baghouse from where the fumes and dust are automatically transported to the pelletizing installation and are recycled with new material. The daily output of lead bullion depends mainly on the lead content of the charge. With lead concentrates containing 74% lead, about 24 tons of lead bullion per day are produced on the hearth at a direct lead recovery of about 89 per cent. Approximately 10 per cent of the lead content of the new material passes into the hearth slag from where it can be recovered in a blast furnace or in a rotary furnace. For small lead smelters the BBU-process represents the most economical way of melting high-grade lead concentrates. The process requires a relatively small capital investment, consumes little fuel, utilizes cheap fuel and is very flexible. Further, of great importance, is the fact that battery scrap can be treated by the BBU-process with very good results.

In the day-to-day life the copper business of today is influenced directly by the ever-increasing general concern about the environment. In addition to that the inherent shortcomings of the copper smelting business, have since many years been the falling real price level of the metals and the relatively high initial capital investments required for the production units. These shortcomings have been compensated for by high productivity, low specific operating costs, low metal inventory and unbeatable technological superiority. Thus today more than 50 % of the world primary copper is today produced by utilizing Outokumpu Flash Smelting Technology. This figure is expected to grow at an increasing speed in the near future. Characteristic for the Outokumpu Flash Smelting technology is high flexibility for a wide grade of concentrates and the highest sulfur capture owing to at the same time competitive investment and operational costs. The Flash Converting technology offers new options for copper production and optimization of the mine- concentrator-smelter production chain. In the following years it is expected that the trend in copper making is that higher grade concentrates are produced at the mines. Thus increasing amount of high grade concentrate will be available for direct-to- blister Flash Smelting causing an overall cost reduction in copper smelting i.e. both in capital and operational costs. In the '90s new technologies based on Outokumpu Flash Smelting technology have been taken into operation, thus eliminating the non-continuous Peirce-Smith converting process step. New innovative solutions have been used in the latest projects, as in Kennecott Utah Copper, where the new Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process was started up in 1995. Also, in 1995 the new DON process was started at Outokumpu Harjavalta nickel smelter followed by the Fortaleza nickel smelter in Brazil in 1997. The aim of the continuous development work at Outokumpu has been the expansion of the direct-to-blister process towards lower grade concentrates. The most recent example of this is the start-up at the Olympic Dam smelter in Australia, where the existing direct-to-blister Flash Smelting furnace was replaced with a new one having a capacity of 200 000 t blister copper per annum in just one smelting step.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

Acid mine drainage is a serious environmental and economic concern, resulting in regulation of the mining industry and significant water treatment costs. An interdisciplinary approach is needed to analyze the many aspects of a complex acid drainage problem. This paper describes the integrated application of techniques from the following fields to the characterization of acid drainage at a large underground lead-zinc mine: 1) hydrogeology, 2) surface stream analysis, 3) structural analysis of fracture distribution, 4) hydrochemistry, 5) geostatistics, and 6) multivariate statistics. The Bunker Hill Mine in northern Idaho, is developed in highly fractured and faulted quartzites and discharges 95 L/sec of water with an average pH of 2.8 and an average zinc concentration of 120 mg/L. Research has been conducted on all aspects of the acid water production and drainage problem. Recharge to the mine has been investigated using geophysical techniques and tracer studies. Fracture mapping and geostatistical analysis of the fracture data have been used to determine characteristics of inflow to the mine workings. Hydrograph analysis techniques have been applied to water flow data within the underground workings. Chemical sampling and analysis have been used to identify acid producing workings, and better understand mechanisms controlling acid water production. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to analyze the quality and flow data. Research results from the many subprojects of the Bunker Hill study reveal the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of acid mine drainage problems.

In the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to " qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were engaged on both sides; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. "Tenova Pyromet has designed a slag flow control valve that throttles the flow of slag in order to control the tapping rate. In addition, the valve has proved to be a reliable tool for closing the furnace during normal operation as well as emergency conditions. The valve makes use of a water-cooled copper element that is hydraulically operated and attached directly to the slag tap-hole. The equipment is compact, simple to maintain, and cost-effective to purchase and install. It can be retrofitted to most existing slag tapholes with minimal modifications.During the development phase, finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was extensively used to model predicted operating conditions and to optimize the design. By using CFD, it was possible to understand the flow patterns inside the copper and to optimize these to improve overall performance.The slag valve was installed and commissioned in 2011/2012 on a 12 MW furnace as part of a new mineral wool plant in the USA. It has performed well since its installation despite operating under conditions in excess of the original design criteria. During the first 6 months of operation it quickly became the preferred method of closing the furnace, although the design intent was for occasional use during emergency shutdown conditions only. Since replacing the mudgun as the main method of closing the tap-hole, a few minor changes have been made to the installation in order to cope with the increased heat load and much higher frequency of use."

I. Situation and Surroundings, The Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chin-acates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the sta-tion by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion—a distance of about 15.5 miles—and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio—a further distance of 11.5 miles— making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Inés, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Mel-chor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. This paper describes a series of experiments conducted to determine how the physicochemical properties of the suspending fluid affect the size reduction of quartz in a ball mill. Particular attention was directed toward the differences in rate of grinding and particle size distributions when either polar or non-polar fluids were the suspending liquids. Grinding was performed with water, carbon tetrachloride and methylcyclohexane as the liquids, and also in nitrogen for comparative purposes. From the results ob- tained, the authors have concluded that the presence of water greatly enhances efficiency in the grinding of quartz. Comminution is generally regarded as a purely physical process in which fragmentation of a solid is obtained by the application of suitable forces. In 1944, however, Rehbinder et al.1 pioneered the idea that the interfacial forces between the solid and the media plays an important role in comminution. Since then, a number of researches have shown conclusively that comminution is affected by surface chemical phenomena,2-5 and Gaudin went as far as to compare comminution to a chemical reaction.6 The effect of the viscosity and the density of the fluid media in grinding was also investigated, but

Coal mining both with longwall and room-and-pillar method often encounters severe operational difficulties due to had roof conditions. Rooffalls at entry cross-cuts or along the rib line in longwalls as welt as dynamic and excessive loads on supports due to overhanging of strong roof layers in a goab - are well known phenomena to the mine operators. Also, a number of practical examples may be quoted of dramatic improvement of working conditions after changing of coal winning technology or supports type. It is therefore a question to be answered how far we are able to recognize roof strata properties before mining starts and adjust both coal extraction technology and supports of entries to rock stability foreseen. Furthermore, engineering principles and criteria for decision making should be established. In recent years several in situ rock strength and discontinuities detection testing techniques have been developed both indirect (geophysical) and direct thus making possible closer roof-strata examination. In this paper critical roof span criterion is discussed as a basis for selection of proper mining system in terms of desirable stability of mine opening .

THE following is a description of the methods used in rescuing men and extinguishing the underground fire at the Pennsylvania mine, Butte, Mont. This fire, which cost the lives of 21 men, began about 9 p.m., Feb. 14, 1916, at or near a ventilating fan on the 1,200 air-shaft station. This shaft at that time was downcast, while the main hoisting shaft was upcast. Owing to the proximity of the fire to the air shaft, the air in the latter soon became heated, and as the fan on the level was not running¬the power having been cut off shortly after the outbreak' of the fire-the aim' shaft became upcast to the 300 level. At this point a blanket of cold air from the surface caused the smoke and gases to he drawn in on that level and carried down again through the workings to the 1,200. A short time after the discovery of the fire, water was turned down the air shaft through a series of pipes around the collar of the shaft, which caused the smoke to recede, below the 300, so that within 2 hr. it was possible to search that level for the missing men. From the above it will be apparent why the air shaft was upcast instead of downcast as under normal conditions, and why men were suffocated at considerable distances from the seat of the fire. The smoke and gases that came up the main hoisting shaft did not diffuse through the workings to any extent. There are doors on all levels in the connections to the main hoisting and air shafts, but-in the confusion and running around many of these doors were left open, and this undoubtedly caused the smoke and gases to spread more rapidly than they would otherwise have done. It was necessary for most of the men on the various levels to pass close to the air shaft in going to the hoisting shaft, and when they encountered the smoke and gases in that vicinity a number turned hack and climbed down with the direction of the air currents and were then suffocated, while all those who passed through the relatively short pall of smoke to the main shaft were saved.

The ovienlalion of hexagonal a-zirconium crystals in cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes and in both as-extruded and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pcl ND tubes has been rrleasured using the inverse Pole - figure technique. Uniaxial tensile tests hare shown the Zil-caloy-2 lubes to hare highly anisotropic delovmation behavior whereas heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes are nearly isotropic. The differences in deformation behavior are esbloilred from the observed textures of the tubes and the deformation systems known to oberate in Zircnloy,-3. Tlze vcsults lead to an explanation of the high effective strain observed fov the Zircaloy-2 tubes as colrzpared to heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pet Nb tubes in restrained end burst tests at 280° to 300°C. THE Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb alloy. when heat-treated by quenching from temperatures slightly below the (a + p)/P phase boundary and subsequently aged at 500°C, has tensile strengths about 50 pct greater than those of 20 pct cold-worked Zircaloy-2.1 There is. therefore, considerable economic incentive to replace Zircaloy-2 with the heat-treated alloy in some in-reactor applications. notably for pressure tubes, where strength is a prime consideration. However, when tubes of Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb fabricated by extrusion and drawing prior to heat treatment were subjected to restrained end-burst tests at 300 °C. the circumferential expansion at failure1 was only 10 pct that of cold-drawn Zircaloy-2 tubes in similar tests,2 Table I. This result was not predicted from uniaxial tensile tests in which the ductilities of the two materials were quite similar.' The detailed requirement for ductility in pressure vessels has not yet been worked out. and comparison of the relative merits of cold-worked Zircaloy-2 and heat-treated Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb is further complicated by the irradiation-induced loss of ductility and hydrogen pickup each will undergo from reactor operation.1,2 Nevertheless. the lower circumferential expansion of the Zr-2.5 wt pct Nb tubes raised serious doubts on the advisability of their use as pressure vessels. For this reason, an investigation to determine the cause for different ductilities of the two types of tubes was initiated. From a study of uniaxial tensile properties and crystallographic orientation it has been found that the fracture ductilities observed in the burst tests can be related directly to the crystallographic ori-
