An increase in pig iron output by 50 per cent was aimed at after re-lining No.2 blast furnace of NAKAYAMA STEEL WORKS. This had to be achieved by increasing both the furnace volume (from 673 to 757 m3) and its productivity, Without equipment for high top pressure operation, high productivity was mainly attained by the following three measures; (1) improving the gas flow characteristics by maintaining a high ratio of agglomerated ores, increasing the strength of sinter and coke, and optimizing the charge distribution, (2) decreasing the fuel ratio by low Si operation and the use of hot blast, and (3) oxygen enrichment. In addition, the tapping controls for pig iron and slag were intensified. As a result of the above measures an excellent hot metal output of 2.7 tonne/m3/day was attained in April 1979 (monthly average).

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-way, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

It is now generally conceded that if a steel is to develop optimum physical properties in the conventionally quenched and tempered condition, the microstruc- ture after quenching should consist wholly of martensite; and that transformation of austenite to intermediate-temperature products during quenching will have a deleterious effect upon the physical properties, particularly the toughness, of the tempered material. This implies that, in order to obtain the optimum physical properties from a given steel, its "harden-ability " should be high enough to suppress all transformation except that to martensite under the heating and quenching conditions to which it will be subjected, and this premise is probably the most important reason for hardenability control. However, the criterion of hardenability that at present is most widely accepted and used is based on a microstructure of 50 per cent martensite. This criterion, which was suggested by Grossmann,' does have considerable justification. It may be readily measured by a fracture or etch test and, since it represents the point at which the hardness is changing most rapidly with variations in cooling rate, it may be determined empirically from a hardness-depth curve by determining the point of steepest slope (the inflection point). Rate of gas diffusion in reservoir oil has been investigated in an effort to explain the variation in oil characteristics observed in the Weber Sandstone reservoir, Rangely field, Colorado. Coefficients of gas diffusion were determined experimentally for the Rangely oil system and used in a mathematical simulation of gas diffusion during the probable life of the Rangely reservoir, estimated at 65 million years. The simulator involved solution of Fick's law for diffusion in two dimensions by the method of finite difference and successive over-relaxation. The results show that continuing gas diffusion is a logical explanation for the variation in oil characteristics at Rangely and that the pattern of gas distribution by diffusion in an asymmetrical reservoir will not conform to structural contours as originally proposed.

Accurate ore-sizing with screens is drawing attention to certain details that now, more than ever before, require attention. There are many tests that must be preceded by careful sizing. The assayer often could profit by a more careful selection of screens. In milling, more attention is given the slimes produced. Cement-manufacturers are pulverizing and screening finer than they formerly did, and others are reducing materials to fine sizes at high cost, with screens used to govern the fineness of the pulverized product. Fine screens are expensive, easily injured by misuse, are carried in stock sparingly by most dealers, and are handled often by those who know little about them except their designated number. More attention, on the whole, needs be given the actual size of the mesh-openings, and less emphasis placed upon any custom or conventionality in numbering. An effort to classify wire screens, in this respect, leads at once into computations, where one is confronted with details of sizes and standards, of different wires, different gauges, and different customs. There is always uncertainty about the exact working-size of a screen until one gives the matter special attention, and devotes more time to it than its simplicity seems to demand. To know only the number is not sufficient for all uses. Often, in sets, superfluous sizes are used; and sizes are omitted that are of critical importance. In wire screens, the use of different standard sizes of wire makes important differences in dimensions that must be taken into account. The dealer usually grades screens by the number of openings per linear dimensions, regardless of the size of the openings or of the wire. Certain 100-mesh screens in use are found, by measurement, to be actually coarser than others of 90-mesh, a result which is due, of course, to the use of larger

SASS and cohenl (S-C) have recently reported some transmission electron microscope observations of an interesting effect which they call "veining". They observed veining in thin foils of solution-treated and (in certain cases) aged samples of a Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy (assumed equal to 10.9 at. pct Ti). S-C suggest that veining in solution-treated samples is due to the selective electrolytic etching of titanium-rich regions in alloys which are otherwise homogeneous. They associate the veins with the discrete titanium-rich regions detected in a magnetic study of aging in this system by Ben Israel and Fine,' and they also suggest that the initial strengthening of aged Ni-Ti alloys is due to these titanium-rich regions, rather than the formation of the coherent precipitate (Ni3Ti, L12 crystal structure).

THE study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystalliza-tion has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans,2 who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakao,4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers,6 were of a. qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute some-thing to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the distribution of uranium and various methods of ore sampling in a uranium deposit typical of those in the Morrison Formation sandstone of the Ambrosia Lake area, Grants mining district, north-western New Mexico. Chemical and radiometric assays of diamond-drill core samples are compared in detail by statistical techniques, and the assay data are correlated with the stratigraphy of the deposit. Conclusions applicable to ore-reserve estimation in geologically similar uranium deposits are drawn.

"Atlantic Copper is one of the largest copper producers in Europe. Its production facilities, including a primary copper smelter and an electrolytic refinery, are located in Huelva, on the southwest coast of Spain. These installations enable the smelting of over 1 million tpy concentrates to produce up to 260,000 tons per year of cathodes and 900 ktpy of sulphuric acid.Since 1970, several improvements have been made at the Converters Area such as modifications of primary hoods, operations with an OPC system, installation of scrap chargers, the recent installation of the secondary hoods and other environmental projects. All these modifications have been aimed at increasing the capacity of our smelter while keeping our continuous environmental commitment.This paper describes the modifications and improvements carried out at the converters area and our proposals for future developments."

History ILLINOIS has so recently attained the third place in the oil production of the United States that few realize its great importance, or are aware of its highly profitable character. Since 1907 Illinois has furnished about 15 per cent. of the United States output and about 10 per cent. of the world's production. The value of the output in 1913 is estimated at $30,000,000, of which about $20,000,000 is profit. The present prosperity dates from 1905, but efforts have been made since 1865 to develop production and geologists have been very sanguine as to its future for over 25 years. Had the oil operators been as confident as the geologists, the field would have been opened at least 30 years earlier. The development of a softwood alternative to the hardwood chockpiece used to build the waste-edge breakers commonly incorporated in gateroad packs is described. The results of laboratory tests on softwood prototypes and two underground trials are presented. The results of the last trial suggest that a viable alternative chockpiece has been designed, offering advantages over availability of wood, weight and given reduced wood content, price.

Since 1950, several papers have been published which have described various methods for studying mobility ratio effects. The methods which have been described for studying mobility ratio effects include X-ray shadowgraph techniques, stepwise potentiometric model procedures, stepwise numerical procedures, gelatin model studies and fluid mapper model studies. The purpose of this paper is to describe a procedure for using a resistance network for studying mobility effects. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The basic unit of the experimental model consisted of a network of 840 resistors fastened to a sheet of black Lucite which was mounted on a wooden frame, Fig. 1. The dimensions of the Lucite sheet were 36 X 36 in. The resistors were fastened to the Lucite sheet at mesh points by means of snaps. The mesh points were arranged in a square pattern, 30 X 30 in., spaced at intervals of l1/2 in. The snap fasteners permitted several resistors to be "stacked" in parallel. By adding additional resistors to the basic unit, the specific resistance on each side of the flood front could be varied. The square network of resistors represented one of four symmetrical elements of a five-spot well pattern. The current input was analogous to an injection well and the current output was analogous to a production well." The power supply was essentially a full wave transformer-rectifier system for converting alternating-current into direct-current. The DC voltage could be varied from 41.43 to 290 v in steps of 41.43 v by selecting the proper outlet jacks. The major components of the power supply were: a Triro power transformer, R 11-A; a dual 5Y3 vacuum tube; two gas filled OD-3 tubes; and a Triplett voltmeter, model 227-1, range 0 to 500 DC v. The procedure for scaling breakage parameters determined in a laboratory mill to values for a full-scale mill is briefly presented. A simulation model of a closed circuit mill also requires a model of residence time distribution, a mass transfer law to predict over-filling as a function of flow rate through the mill, and a model to describe classification action. For fine dry grinding, or viscous slurry grinding, it is necessary to allow for slowing-down of breakage rates for a fine mill charge. Four examples of comparing simulation models to actual plant data are presented. The first is wet grinding of copper ore in normal closed circuit at 50 tph (metric) production, under conditions where the mill does not overfill. The second is the wet grinding of copper ore in reversed closed circuit at production of 87, 102 and 108 tph, with flow through the mill of approximately 150, 200 and 300 tph. The third is dry grinding of coal with a hot air sweeping stream to remove all of the coal as air-borne material, in open and normal closed circuit. The fourth is grinding of cement clinker in a two-compartment, air-swept tube mill in normal closed circuit with two different classifiers, producing 120 tph of 3250 Blaine cement. In all cases the simulated capacities and product size distributions were in reasonable agreement with actual plant performance.

The proposed guidelines on vibration limits that have been circulated by the Australian Environmental Council, demonstrate the need for an extensive data collection and evaluation program to avoid the enacting of abritrary and costly legislation. The operational or practical influence of blast design and overall economic implications of legislation which further reduces permissible levels of ground vibration are discussed. In a typical blasting operation, blast sizes could become smaller and blasting correspondingly more frequent to meet pro- duction demands. Blasthole diameters and charge lengths could be reduced, increasing drilling costs and associated labour costs. Blast size however, is frequently controlled by factors associated with machinery, grade control, pit control, stope size, production contract levels and other factors which cannot be readily changed for operating mines. Blasthole diameters are frequently deter- mined by existing drilling equipment, length of holes (depth of ore or stope size), geological structure and other factors which are not easily changeable. Typical large scale open stoping and strip mining opera- tions are analysed as case studies. The effects of extreme leg- islative limits and the corresponding operational changes with respect to variations in production costs are discussed.

The paper describes four different types of support for deep excavations, which are currently used in China. Local experiences were illustrated by presenting case histories for each type of support. For braced excavation in soft clays in Shanghai, the earth pressure against bracings were found to be in conformity with the trapizoidal estimation given by Terzaghi and Peck (1967). For tie-back support of excavations in Beijing and Shengyang, earth pressures were found to be much less than those predicted by ordinary rules. In the construction of a mining shaft in coarse sand below ground water level, high pressure jet grouting has been successfully used to form a circular impervious lining of the shaft. As an effective anti-slide measure, large diameter reinforced concrete piles constructed by open shaft method have been widely used with success.

IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in' shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.
