Draglines have been used exclusively for primary overburden stripping at the German Creek Mine complex in central Queensland, where coal has been extracted from a series of ten open cut pits working seams of the German Creek Coal Measures. Due to the dip of the seams, most of the pits have now reached the limit of current economic viability and the emphasis has switched to underground extraction using longwall methods and to a new area of open cut reserves in the nearby Rangal Coal Measures at German Creek East. This area is characterised by weak Tertiary overburden, relatively steep dips and low strength intraformational shear planes at the top and bottom of the coal.The first pit, with a maximum depth to coal of 15 m at the low wall, avoided any major slope failure through use of scrapers to excavate the boxcut and dump the spoil away from the low wall. However, this method was not considered economically viable for the second pit where low wall depths reached 44 m. Following geotechnical investigations the boxcut was divided into a number of zones depending on depth of cover, dip and thickness of Tertiary clay. Slope stability was assessed for each zone using several analytical techniques to ensure that dragline mining would be acceptable. Slope design parameters incorporating various stabilisation techniques, notably an updip trench backfilled with competent spoil to form a low wall buttress prior to excavation of the boxcut panel, were successfully integrated into the mine plan after careful consideration of the complex scheduling to minimise rehandle.

IN striking contrast to American mining engineering schools, in Europe a new president, known as the Rektor Magnificus, is elected each year or alternate year. An exception is Italy, where election is for a period of three years. The Rektor, who is elected by the full professors, must also be a professor and full-time member of the faculty. In most cases there is a Senate, composed of 5 to 14 full professors, some elected and some appointed, which controls the Rektor in policy decisions, but in some institutions there is no such controlling body. In the same way deans for each faculty or college are selected at the same intervals from among the full professors concerned.

The Bureau of Mines is using characteristic X-rays produced by proton bombardment of a solid surface to provide quantitative compositional analyses of surface layers of metals. An integral X-ray yield equation has been developed that quantitatively relates the measured X-ray yield to the thickness of thin films ranging from less than a monolayer to several thousand angstroms. The use of the integral yield equation is demonstrated for the growth of a thin film by vacuum evaporation. Results are presented that show haw proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been used to determine the oxidation kinetics of iron that had been implanted with several different species of heavy ions. The sensitivity of PIXE for the measurement of very-thin-film growth kinetics is demonstrated from studies of the effect of fractional mono-layer coverages of sulfur on the initial oxidation kinetics of iron. Results are also presented in which PIXE has been used to study the redistribution of alloying elements in components of a gas turbine that had fractured due to corrosion fatigue. By combining PIXE with low-energy ion sputtering, quantitative composition depth profiles of surface layers are obtained. Examples are presented for the profiling of iron samples implanted with 25-kev nickel ions and for a platinum coating on an Fe-5Cr substrate.

MODERN mining is based on drilling--everything else stems from that. U. S. and Canadian mining companies and suppliers of mining equipment are constantly seeking new techniques and tools for increased drilling efficiency. Ultimate goal is increased bit-against-rock time. Just how important their efforts are can be seen through a legitimate extension of available statistics. In Canada some 70 million ft of drilling per year is required. While the number of feet actually drilled in the U. S. is unknown, it is possible to compare U. S. and Canadian mineral production, excluding oil and coal. In the U. S. mineral value was $4200 million and across the border $836 million. Taking into account the number of drilled feet required to produce Canada's total, the U. S. total would be 365 million ft in 1953. A saving of 14 per ft would reduce over- all metal and nonmetal mining costs some $3.65 million per year. This does not take into account other indirect savings. Methods have changed and there have been structural and metallurgical advances in blasthole practice in the last ten years. The Editors of MINING ENGINEERING in the articles on the following pages present the most significant innovations coupled with results in the field. Environment plays an important role in selection of materials and equipment -but while unanimity does not exist throughout the industry in reference to drilling problems, a definite trend is evident. For the story of that trend read the articles on the following pages.

THE four papers making up this symposum have been prepared espe-cially for those who have no knowledge of seismograph prospecting. To many people mathematics is a formidable subject, and many are discouraged from studying seismograph prospecting under the mistaken assumption that the mathematical requirements are severe. In the papers presented here there is not a single mathematical equation. We believe that considerable competence in dealing with some of the most important problems of this work can be attained without any mathe-matical training whatever. At the present time, there is a real need for interpretation of results by persons thoroughly competent to bring geologic experience and imagination to bear on data that are subject to multiple interpretation from a strictly physical viewpoint. Likewise, those charged with the responsibility of planning seismo-graph exploration campaigns would do well to become familiar with as much as possible of the technical aspects of the work. They would then be in better position to judge of its success in individual cases. It has often been said that the seismograph is a new structure-finding tool for the geologists to use. Using a tool and using its product are two different things. One does not use an automatic screw-threading machine when he buys a box of screws at the hardware store. Neither does the geologist

This requirement has stimulated a search for ways and means of applying modern management techniques to the design and construction of mineral processing plants.This search by consulting firms has resulted in the evolution of the concept of project management and the development of planning and con trolling techniques with the result that Owners can seek and obtain better assurance that their project objectives will be fulfilled.This paper will attempt to outline how a mineral processing plant can be brought into production through the implementation of project management techniques.Definition And Objectives Of Project ManagementThe design and construction of mineral processing plants is subject to the restraints of three inter-related parameters -Quality, Cost and Time each of which influences and is influenced by the other two.Project management is a technique where the Owner delegates complete responsibility to a single organization for all phases of a project (design, procurement, construction and commissioning) for the above parameters but retains freedom for major decision making. Normally, the consultant under-takes full responsibility for all phases, but partial project management services can be provided when the Owner so desires.The objective of project management is first to devise and define and then to implement a program in which the relationship between the three parameters of Quality, Cost and Time is optimized, i.e., the desired functional and other requirements are attained (but not exceeded) at the lowest practicable overall cost in the shortest practicable time. They may include natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes, or they may involve manmade disasters such as technological failures or terrorist attacks. As a member of an emergency response team, you and your team members are at risk of experiencing what psychologists refer to as a traumatic incident—an incident that may Involve exposure to catastrophic events, severely injured children or adults, dead bodies or body parts, or the loss of colleagues, for instance. Traumatic incidents can produce unusually strong emotional reactions that may interfere with your ability to function at the scene or later: You may experience any of the physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral symptoms listed below in Table 1. Some people experience emotional aftershocks weeks or months after they have passed through a traumatic event. Others may experience these reactions while still at the scene, where they must stay clearly focused on constantly changing hazards to maintain their own safety and to rescue injured victims.

Results of investigations over approximately the last 10 years by the Bureau of Mines and others on technology for recovering cell-grade alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources such as clay, anorthosite, alunite, dawsonitic oil shale, coal ash, and coal shale are reviewed. It is concluded that, although many innovative techniques have evolved from this effort and have been shown to be technically feasible, energy and economic considerations will prevent any of the processes from competing with the Bayer process under normal conditions. Based on the Bureau's experience, some variation of clay-HCI leaching, HC1 gas sparging crystallization has the greatest potential as an alternative to the Bayer-bauxite process.

"Zircon (zirconium silicate) is the main opacifier of glossy, opaque, white colored, frit-based wall tile glazes. However, zirconia containing frits employed in the preparation of these glazes increase the production cost and therefore, limit zircon usage as a raw material at industrial scale. With the present study, it was searched whether borax solid wastes could be evaluated as a component in the starting relevant frit recipes. The wastes were obtained from Eti Maden Kirka Boron Company of Turkiye. Frit production, glaze preparation, application, and fast single-firing of glazed wall tiles were conducted under laboratory working conditions in Anadolu University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering laboratories. Beside standard tests applied to the final glazed wall tiles, color and gloss analyses of the fired glazes were conducted with a spectrophoto-meter and a gloss-meter. Characterization of these newly produced glass-ceramic glazes was made by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques. IntroductionFrits are the indispensable constituents of most industrial glazes which mature at temperatures below 1150 °C [1]. In the traditional opaque glazes used in wall tile industry, opacity usually originates through hardening of glass matrix by adding high amounts of zirconia containing frits into the glaze batch [2]. Nowadays, researches point out that certain type of glass-ceramic layers can be alternatively employed as tile coatings lowering the use of zirconia containing expensive opaque frits. A rather high crystallization capacity of glass- ceramic glazes due to zirconia presence in glass network makes them suitable candidate as a glaze coating with a desirable micro-structure. One of the best methods to obtain an opaque glaze surface is to induce a crystal phase in the coating, whose refractive index differs significantly from that of the glassy matrix. The opacity of such coating is determined by the diffusion, refraction and reflection of light through the layer containing emerging crystals, and the degree of opacity mainly depends on the size and quantity of crystals. The development of glazes not consisting of expensive or toxic components is of special interest [3]."

During the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, due to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to $2 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and SO much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. Lane-Peabody Agreement In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

"The Brunswick No.12 site concentrator processes 10,500 tonnes per day of a complex lead, zinc, copper and silver ore producing four concentrates by differential flotation. Research over the years has led to increased understanding about the mineralogical and flotation characteristics of the ore. A pilot plant study conducted at Lakefield Research, primarily designed to investigate the technical feasibility of semi-autogenous grinding, provided an opportunity to test recent theories about grind size,, reagent schedule and flowsheet configuration.A fundamental approach was taken with each of the unit processes involved in grinding and flotation. Basic operating and metallurgical criteria were established in each area and a step-by-step implementation program initiated in the plant.Significant improvements in metallurgical and financial performance have been realized through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment and without major capital expenditure. Current operating practice is detailed and metallurgical advancements cited.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Brunswick is a publicly traded company with majority ownership held by Noranda Minerals (63%). In addition to the No. 12 underground mine, the company operates a lead smelter and phosphate fertilizer plant in Belledune, N.B. and maintains a 25% interest in a joint venture with Noranda Minerals' Heath Steele mine near Newcastle, N.B. Through the four operations, a total of 2000 people are directly employed with fixed assets totalling Cdn$187 million (BM&S, 1991)."

At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required. Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

Talc is a commonly encountered gangue mineral in metal sulfide flotation. Talc is naturally hydrophobic, resulting in high recoveries if polymeric depressants are not used to specifically reject this MgO containing mineral. We have studied the adsorption of a selection of polymers onto talc using a variety of techniques. Adsorption isotherms have been determined using ex situ depletion techniques and in situ ATR-FTIR spectroscopy has been used to determine adsorption kinetics. Adsorbed layer thicknesses have been determined for the polymers on cleaved talc surfaces using the AFM. The effect of the adsorbed polymer layer on the properties of the talc surface has been quantified through contact angle measurements and single mineral flotation tests. Distinct correlations are observed between the adsorbed layer properties and the flotation performance of the polymers. These observations are discussed with reference to the bubble-particle attachment process and the molecular structure of the polymers.

The ignition of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using laminar flow furnace and thermal analysis techniques which were supported by XRD and optical microscopic examination of the products. In air, chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited at temperatures of 400-500'C and 500-600?C respectively. The phase assemblages predicted from thermodynamic analyses were compared with those found by experiment, and the onset of ignition was correlated against changes in the phase compositions. Pyrite and chalcopyrite ignited when pyrrhotite and intermediate solid solution formed thus opening up the structure and allowing ready access of oxygen.

The Olympic Dam deposit in South Australia contains 2% copper and 0.06% uranium, which are present as bomite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The copper is principally recovered using flotation. The flotation tailings, which contain the bulk of the uranium, and typically 0.3% copper, are leached using sulfuric acid and an oxidant at atmospheric pressure. This paper describes the results from a detailed investigation of the leaching behaviour of this ore. The influence of acid strength, Fe3+ concentration, redox potential and temperature on the dissolution of uranium and copper minerals was studied. Experimental data were obtained from extensive batch leach tests. Mineralogical studies, including SEM analysis of individual mineral grains, were also carried out. The maximum extraction of uranium determined experimentally was in good agreement with that predicted from SEM determination of the proportion of refractory brannerite in the ore. The leaching rate of copper was found to be independent of acidity over the range 20 g L-' to pH 2.0, but was strongly dependent on temperature and Fe3+ concentration. Uranium extraction showed a weak de endence on acidity, Arrhenius temperature dependence and a complex co-dependence on F>+ concentration and redox potential. A kinetic model has been developed, which predicts copper and uranium dissolution. This model will be incorporated into a more comprehensive model that can be used to predict leach performance and reagent consumption for specific ore samples.

The adsorption of oleate at the surface of titanium dioxide from aqueous solutions was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT -IR.) spectroscopy using a germanium internal reflection element coated with a thin film of TiO2. This thin film, with a thickness of 100-200 A, was deposited on the surface of a germanium single crystal by RFIDC magnetron reactive sputtering. It was found that significant adsorption of oleate from a 0.02-0.03 mM aqueous solution on the surface of TiO2 thin film occurs at neutral pH, from about pH=5.5 to pH=7.7. Adsorption of oleate at the surface of the amorphous TiO2 thin film appeared to be reversible, involving soap-acid dimers.

The deposition of metastable carbonate minerals in ar. aid, sheltered, coastal environment, leads to the formation of a flat, coastel, sabkha plain. The ground waters of the sabkha plain are modified by evaporation, precipitation of salts and reaction between ions in solution and the host carbonates. The resulting brine is similar to those found in fluid inclusions associated with Mississippi Valley type deposits. The aragonite and high magnesium calcite found in the sediments can concentrate lead and zinc from sea water. On diagenesis the lead and zinc are released into the sabkha brines.
