UPTREND in value of mineral production in the Commonwealth of Australia continued in 1963, again pacing the country's general economic growth rate. Increases occurred in output of most raw and processed mineral products, including bauxite, copper, iron ore, pig iron, steel, lead, zinc, cement, gypsum, pyrite, coal, and refined petroleum products. Although the economy of Australia has been traditionally based on wool and agricultural products, in recent years the country has become highly industrialized. Nearly one-third of the 3.6 million total civilian labor force is engaged in manufacturing. Employment in mines and quarries occupies 1.4 percent of the national labor force.

The initial results of our investigations on the applicability of geophysical exploration methods to map coal seam inclusions were summarized in a paper submitted at the Thirteenth Conference on Ground Control in Mining in 1994. These investigations were continued under a variety of conditions at a number of underground coal mining operations. The results have been encouraging and have fostered a much more detailed understanding of the geophysical principles at work in underground mine mapping. This report summarizes a particularly interesting application, that is, the use of Underground In-Seam Seismic exploration methods to identify and to approximately delineate coal seam inclusions within longwall panels. The methodology relies on the excitation of seismic sources in the coal seam along one side of the panel and the recording of seismic waves by geophones secured to the coal rib on the opposite side. Head-Body waves (compressional and shear), direct and channel waves are generated in the process. While the head waves are critically refracted waves traveling at the coal floor and roof, direct and channel waves are transmitted through the coal body and are dispersive in character. Tomographic techniques applied to the velocity inversion of first arrivals permits a fast mapping of coal seam inclusions in the panel. The process incorporates path velocity and geostatistical intersect analysis. Full wave analysis of the dispersive channel waves, provides an independent and confirmatory information of the coal geometry, including the inclusions within. The inversion technique in this case is the modal analysis of the wave trains. The application of this method to three different problems was confirmed by subsequent mining of the predicted anomalies, proving the accuracy of the technique within limits of experimental error.

"The presence of radon from uranium-bearing ores, waste and from backfill material introduced underground to provide ground support, work platform and waste disposal functions, requires that ventilation controls be established to maintain safe working level concentrations. One approach has been developed at Queen's University to quantify radon and radon daughter source level s and to estimate ventilation requirements necessary to maintain these safe levels.Knowledge concerning the sources of radioactive contaminants and their production quantities is of value for planning and design stages of ventilation control systems. For any given mine layout, radiation level estimates may be forecast and modified by ventilation network design where excessive production quantities may exist.Behaviour of Radon Gas in MinesRadon gas, produced from the decay of Ra-226 in a host medium, will diffuse through porous media. In areas adjacent to mine workings, radon will be liberated into the mine atmosphere. The rate of radon emanation is proportional to the rate at which radon is produced within the host material (a function of the ore grade of U308) , to the radon concentration gradient in the host pores and to the diffusion properties of the material.The radon source concentration is determined by the rate at which Rn-222 is produced by the decay of Ra-226, and by the emanating coefficient (E), or fraction of the radon which escapes from the source matrix and is free to diffuse through the pore spaces."

This report covers magnetic field strength measurements vs range and frequency in low-medium coal mines. Both quasi-conductor-free and conductor-proximity areas were investigated. The program covered 5 mines, 4 seams, 6 measurement sets, and 3 geographic areas. The results have been summarized in terms of maximum communication range expected per seam and noise condition. Scatter gain is further explored as a simple measure of energy coupled to conductors.

ITmk3®(Iron Technology Mark III) is an innovative new ironmaking technology whereby high quality iron nuggets are produced directly from iron ore fines and coal in a rotary hearthfurnace1). The reaction mechanism has been investigated in detail through fundamental laboratory research2)3), and the ITmk3 process has progressed from the laboratory to commercialization by the success of the pilot plant tests initiated at Midrex’ Technical Center and at the Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) located at Kobe Steel Ltd. Kakogawa Steel Works4)5). Pilot operations have demonstrated rapid production of the iron nuggets with complete metal/slag separation at a relatively low operating temperature. The Kakogawa Bench Plant (KBP) in Japan has logged 21 days continuous operation during which high quality iron nuggets were produced directly from fine ore and coal. The operation technology and the engineering data obtained from these pilot tests were instrumental for the scale-up of the ITmk3 process for the Mesabi Nugget Corp. pilot demonstration plant, which is located at Cleveland Cliffs Inc. Northshore Mining iron ore pellet plant in Silver Bay, MN. The ITmk3 process is an ideally suited technology for siting at the iron ore mine, as it allows the economical production of a value-added merchant iron product.

A rockbolted roadway risk assessment procedure has been developed specifically for the Parkgate seam at Thoresby Colliery by Rock Mechanics Technology and colliery engineers. The purpose of this assessment is to identify any areas of significant risk in relation to roof instability due to potential failure or overloading of the rockbolt support system. This allows appropriate additional support to be installed in sections of roadway considered to be at increased risk. The assessment of risk in rockbolted coal mine roadways, in terms of fall of material, has to be based on an understanding of the rock mass behaviour at that site. The development of an appropriate risk assessment system is therefore site specific. A consistent approach to developing such a system can, however, be applied by adopting the same general logic to each individual site. The use of risk assessment to categorise areas with increased risk of roof instability has been undertaken for four longwall panels at Thoresby. The procedures used for these assessments are discussed and the operational benefits examined. The approach successfully used at Thoresby has been developed into a routine tool to assist mine personnel in assessing areas of potential roof instability in rockbolted roadways and as a means of communicating the position of these areas to both supervisors and workmen. The system provides a rational and objective interpretation of the current underground conditions based upon a logical, consistent and structured approach.

MR. DAVIS: When the Secretary asked me to continue our accident experience in safety work at Dawson to cover the year just closed, I rather felt that he was asking 'a good deal, for we had said about everything that we could last year. I am not going to say very much, but in line with his request I have merely brought the figures up to date. I want to say, to start, that 1934 was, rather disappointing. It was the poorest year since 1930, as you will notice (indicates on diagram). This first column represents the accidents per thousand shifts worked. We cannot assign any real valid reason for the increase. We think we worked just as hard, but we are rather inclined to lay it onto the times; in other words, to lay it to the unrest and the changing conditions that are existent not only in this country but probably all over the world. We had twelve lost time accidents last year. As I explained last year, a lost time accident with us is an accident wherein the injured man is not able to return to his regular work, the next day-the day following the injury. So this represents (indicating) the lost time accidents per thousand shifts worked. We had one fatality in the twelve accidents which is reflected in the severity rates, which are also based upon thousand shifts worked instead of per million hours. The reason we are on the thousand shifts worked is be¬cause the Copper Branches of the Phelps-Dodge Corporation are all kept that way, and we are on the same basis for easy comparison.

This paper presents an analysis of ground movements recorded from longwall operations in the Northern Appalachian region in West Virginia. The site chosen for the investigation was selected due to varying heights of overburden and topography and was instrumented for both surface and subsurface measurements. The instrumentation areas consisted of two panels covering various sections with unique geologic and topographic features. Instrumentation included surveying monuments and shallow boreholes using an inclinometer for measuring horizontal strata displacements. Vertical strata deformation was monitored utilizing a unique design of the mechanical grouting method. Full length borehole profile extension was measured using Sondex displacement rings in the inclinometer installation. Subsurface displacements, i. e. caving zone, fractured zone, and highly deformed non-fractured zone were identified. The nature of surface disturbances with respect to varying geologic settings were compared, and an attempt was made to simulate final strata caving and bed separation using finite element analysis.

Conditions necessary for plane front growth of two-piwse solids from a single-phase melt are discussed. Alloys consideved are those from a simple binary system containing a eutectic, but are not, in general, of eutectic cornposition. It is concluded that: 1) plane front solzdification is favored by low growth rate, steep thermal gradient, and essential absence of convection; and 2) for steady-state solidification, the structure should resemble that of directionally solidified eutectics (lamellar, rodlike). Factors affecting THERE are many materials, including metals, available today with strengths in excess of 10' psi when in whisker or fiber form. The challenge facing those interested in practical application of such materials has been, and remains, the economic production and incorporation of the whiskers or fibers into useful engineering composites. solute redistribution along the growth direction are described quantitatively, by numerical solution of the diffusion equation. Effects of variations in growtlz rate on average composition of the solidifying composite are significant. For alloys not too close to a single-phase region, the initial transient at constant gvowth velocity is the order of D/R where D is diffusion coefficient in the liquid and R is interface velocity. Composites consisting of the reinforcing phase within a metallic matrix have excited particular interest in recent years because of their potential for high strength at elevated temperature and for resistance to brittle fracture. Techniques employed to incorporate the whiskers or fibers in the metallic phase have included 1) liquid metal infiltration, 2) solid or liquid phase sintering, and 3) direct growth of composites from the melt, of rodlike or lamellar morphology, by directional solidification of eutectic alloys. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a procedure for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 parts per million of tungsten (70 parts per million of W03). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by Bureau chemists, 98 percent of the tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92 percent of the tungsten was recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44 percent tungstic oxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process-development unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

Although the work on which this paper is based was carried on by the writer as Special Commissioner of the Petroleum Department of the Mexican Government, the opinions expressed are only his personal views for which the Mexican Government can in no way be held responsible. Notwithstanding that the appointment covers all phases of the so-called petroleum question, as the one question of immediate importance was that relating to taxation, it was decided to devote all the time to this phase of the work. The present report has been divided into two closely related parts, the first dealing with the production and marine transportation of Mcxican petroleum, and the second, with the Mexican taxation on petroleum and its products. The writer wishes to acknowledge the loyal cooperation rendered by Mr. M. C. Ehlen, who had charge of the statistical work, and by Miss S. Stern and Messrs. E. P. Heiles and J. E. Morrissey. The aim throughout the work has been to pave the way for a thorough understanding between the Mexican Government and the oil operators and to present a true and clear statement of facts relating to the questions at issue. Mexican Oil Fields Development The salient features in the development of the Mexican oil fields may be summarized as follows: 1901. First commercially productive well in Ebano field. 1902. Tehuantepee field came in; Diaz Government granted concession to Pearson & Son on practically all Federal lands along the Gulf of Mexico. 1907. First producing well in the Furbero field. 1908. Dos Bocas well caught fire, advertising tremendous productivity of Southern oil fields of Mexico.

A general treatment of the broadening of X-ray double-crystal spectrometer rocking curves due to distributions of tilts and strains has been carried out. The results of this treatment have been applied to the case where dislocations in a crystal give rise to both tilts and strains. On this basis it is found that the rocking-curve halfwidth due to imperfections in the crystal, ßC , increases with increasing Bragg angle, 8. These considerations predict linear relationships between & and tan2 , and ßCand tan 8, for Gaussian and Cauchy distributions of dislocations, respectively. The zero intercept of the ßC us 8 curve, which is a measure of the degree of imperfection of the crystal, is found to depend directly on the distribution rather than the number of dislocations. In addition, the slope-intercept ratio for the ßc - ? curve has been calculated for both the Gaussian and Cauchy distributions. Experimental determination of the - 8 curves for a series of copper single crystals prepared by the Bridgeman and Czochralski methods yields results in agreement with the calculated slope-intercept ratio for a Cauchy distribution of dislocations. CERTAIN X-ray techniques have been used to study the perfection of single crystals. Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly have considered the spreading of spots into arcs on Debye-Sherrer rings due to imperfections. The Double-Crystal Spectrometer has also been applied to this problem.2 The characteristics of Double-Crystal Spectrometer Rocking Curves have been described in the literature by various workers.2-4 By assuming a random spacing of dislocations which give rise to a Gaussian distribution of misorientations relative to some mean orientation in a crystal Gay, et al.,1 arrive at the conclu- sion that the most probable misorientation is given by where h is the spacing between dislocations, and 8 and are the relative misorientations of neighboring regions. The evaluation of existing rock stresses from measurements of the change in diameter of a borehole that is stress relieved by overcoring has become a common practice, The stress evaluation has been generally based ,on isotropic relations whereas rock in varying degrees is anisotropic. A plane elasticity solution for a circular hole along one axis of an orthotropic medium is adapted for evaluation of in situ stress from borehole deformation measurements. A consistent triaxial testing approach for determining elastic properties of the overcore is also outlined. Comparison of isotropic with anisotropic interpretations of the state of stress show that large errors in evaluation may occur if the anisotropic character of the rock is neglected.

The use of pulverized coal for generating power and performing industrial processes has made an important contribution to our industrial economy during the past half century. Actually, the burning of coal in powdered form is a subject that has held the attention of engineers for a century or longer. Its widespread use, however, is comparatively recent, As early as 1866 patents were granted to Messrs. Whelpley and Storer for a method of feeding pulverized coal into a furnace as an auxiliary to the grate fuel. In the many tests made during the subsequent years with various kinds of apparatus, the experimenters were handicapped in not getting the coal fine enough to obtain complete combustion and to prevent excessive formation of slag.

Leaching is defined as a form of extraction in which a valuable constituent is removed from a solid body by mass transfer to a solution which, for the purpose of this discussion, is considered to be an aqueous medium. Historically, leaching has been applied to the recovery and purification of many elements. This paper, however, is directed toward the recovery of copper, uranium, vanadium, and precious metals included in the following systems: 1. The leaching of copper minerals, sulfides and oxides, by acid or by ammoniacal leach solutions with or without an oxidant. 2. The leaching of gold and silver, either native metals or as minerals by an oxygen-containing alkaline cyanide solution. 3. The solubilization of certain uranium and vanadium minerals by oxygen or oxidant-bearing lixiviants. Many other systems of this general type exist, but from a production standpoint, these three systems account for most of the major values recovered by leaching.
