The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.

These investigations were conducted to determine conditions for recovery of nickel and copper from Funter Bay, Alaska, sulfide ore and recovery of nickel from nickel-silicate ore, Nickel Mountain, Riddle, Oreg. Samples of Funter Bay cupriferous and nickeliferous pyrrhotite ore, were treated by beneficiation, roasting, electric smelting of roasted are for matte production, chlorination, leaching, and sulfatizing roasting with subsequent leaching. Funter Bay and Nickel Mountain ores were smelted together to produce matte. Total sulfide flotation, followed by magnetic separation of the tailings to recover entrained nickel-bearing pyrrhotite, resulted in the highest nickel recovery in beneficiation tests on Funter Bay are. Overall beneficiation resulted in recovery of 98.5 percent of the copper and 95.4 percent of the nickel in the concentrate that contained 3.5 percent copper and 1.7 percent nickel.

"Electricity as a means of transmitting power was introduced in coal mines of the United States about 1891 for both haulage and coal cutting, only a few years after electrical haulage was first installed on street cars. At first, the hazards of electrical ignition ere not appreciated and the general use of open lights and black blasting powder made the possibility of electrical ignition of fire damp seem small by comparison.5 The possibility of igniting coal dust directly by electric sparks or arcs had not been considered.In the nine years prior to 1900, the progress of introducing electricity underground was slow, except that it was used for lighting shaft bottoms. Electricity had to contend with the more general use of compressed air for coal-cutting machines and, in mainline haulage, with the use of mule-teams and endless and tail-rope systems. During this period, great improvements were made in electrical apparatus, in surface installations as well as in mines. By 1900, therefore, the technique of applying electricity in mines had so far developed that it rapidly drove out the use of compressed air in coal mines because of the comparative ease of its installation and the marked economic advantages of its use over that of compressed air in practically all kinds of mining machines except percussion. rock drills.At this time, however, little thought was given to the hazard of indiscriminate use of electricity causing explosions and fires, and the possibility of electricity causing direct ignition of coal dust had not been considered. On December6, 1907, however, the Monongah, West Va. mine explosion occurred. This was the greatest mine disaster this country has over had, 361 men being killed. Although: there was much diversity of opinion, as to the origin of the explosion, many well-informed engineers concluded that the cause was ignition of coal dust do to wreckage of a runaway trip in a rope haulage entrance slope. This slope also served as a ventilating and it extended from the level of the coal bed to the surface. The runaway trip tore down electric cables and stirred up a cloud of dust when it was wrecked at the bottom of the slope. The dust was probably ignited by the electric arcing that occurred when the wires were knocked down. (Another but less probable source of ignition was the open flames of miners lamps.) From the foot of the slops the explosion appeared to have travelled into the mine, spreading as it went. If this ignition of coal dust was the origin of the explosion, it occurred on pure intake air entering directly from the surface."

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. The Bureau of Mines has conducted research on a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with sulfur dioxide (S02)-bearing waste gases. This FGD process, referred to as the modified citrate process, involves absorption of S02 in a buffered citric acid solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently stripped from the solution using steam, which regenerates the solution and produces a wet S02 product. This product can be further processed to make sulfuric acid or liquid S02. Economic evaluations showed the process to be expensive when the stripper was operated at or near ambient pressures because of the large amounts of steam required for solution regeneration. Research was directed at reducing steam consumption in the stripper. The effect of stripper pressure on steam consumption was investigated. A process research unit (PRU) was operated with the stripper pressurized in the range of 5 to 150 psig. Test results showed that steam consumption decreased with increased stripper pressure. For example, when operating the PRU stripper at 150 psig, 4.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 was required to remove 90 pct of the S02 from a 1.0-vol-pct-S02 gas. This compares to 7.1 grams of steam per gram of S02 required for 90-pct S02 recovery at 5 psig.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

IN conducting the manufacture of extruded brass rods and brass forgings it has been noticed that there is considerable variation in the physical properties, particularly the machinability of different rods and forgings, even though the composition, working temperatures and method of manufacture remain the same. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to establish the cause and extent of this variation, and also to determine whether variations in composition within certain defined limits influence hardness and machinability to any marked degree. The writer believes that this variation probably is due to the variation in grain size of the metal, therefore the microstructure of several compositions under various conditions of working were examined in an effort to establish this as a fact.

The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. Falls of ground, such as falls of roof and sidewall collapses, are a major cause of fatalities and injuries in South African collieries. Based on information obtained from the accident reports of the various Chief Inspectors of nines, a statistical analysis was conducted covering the period 1970 to 1988. This study shows that the volume of rock in a fatal fall of ground is often quite small. In intersections, fatal falls are on average larger than in roadways and at the face. It was also found that in 36 % of all fatal falls of ground no temporary or permanent support was installed at the site of the accident.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

An underground wet shotcrete trial was completed last year to determine the effectiveness of wet shotcrete as an alternative support mechanism to dry shotcrete in the kimberlite environment. The wet shotcrete was manufactured at the underground batch plants, transported to site using an agiecar and transferred to the shotcrete pump. The wet shotcrete is pumped to the nozzle where compressed air at 7 bar and an accelerator, Meyco SA 160, is added and enables the shotcrete to be placed successfully onto the tunnel wall. No tunnel guard was previously placed on the sidewall and hangingwall. Geotechnical testing indicates that the Grace fibre performed extremely well with the energy absorption tests at 7 kg/m3and 8kg/m3where both achieved over the mine requirement of 750joules. The Grace fibre and wet shotcrete mix also achieved a compressive strength in excess of 55 MPa, well above the 45 MPa requirement for Premier Mine. In South Africa there are two suitable wet shotcrete machines available for the mining industry, the Spreymec, manufactured by Tamrock and the Fermel/Meyco wet shotcrete machine. The Spreymec is a fully imported machine. The Fermel component is manufactured in South Africa and the Meyco shotcrete components are imported and supported by MBT (Master Builder Technologists) in South Africa. The Fermel/Meyco machine is assembled in South Africa. Premier Mine has allocated some R2, 100,000 towards the implementation of the wet shotcrete system. If implementation is successful there should be an internal rate of return gain of 76% with regard to this project.

The West Coast region of the South Island is situated astride the Pacific û Australian plate boundary zone. The most significant component of this zone is the Alpine Fault. A variety of reconstructions of the pre-Alpine Fault plate tectonic configuration of the New Zealand continental area have been attempted over the past 25 years or so. Most of these have not been closely constrained by a regional compilation of field data related to the age and horizontal displacement history of the Alpine Fault. A model in which the Alpine Fault was initiated no earlier than the interval 18 - 16.5 Ma (B.P.) is proposed, a significantly younger age of inception than has been widely accepted as the onset of dextral displacement along the plate boundary through the South Island. A subsequent history of displacement is presented consistent with the West Coast basin stratigraphy. The alluvial gold content of some parts of the Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerate sequences is also discussed.

Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.
