All binary and a number of ternary u alloys formed by first long period transition elements were examined and found to be ferromagnetic at low temperatures. The Curie temperatures for these alloys were measured. It was found that the correlation of the Curie temperature with composition may be described qualitatively in terms of the contributions of the various component atomic moments to the saturation moment of the alloy. Ternary Fe-Cr-Mo u phase alloys were also found to be ferromagnetic, with a Curie temperature dependent on the iron content and largely independent of the unit cell dimensions. Similar relations were found for the Co-Fe-Cr and the Co-Cr-Mo a alloys, where the Co + Fe content appears to determine the Curie temperature. RECENTLY, it has become increasingly evident that the u phase is some kind of an "electron compound." Several papers1-' discussed the empirical correlation between the composition of the various u phases in alloys of the transition elements and the distribution of electrons in the partially filled d-levels of the component atoms. However, a picture of the latter can be formed only in a more or less intuitive manner, as in the Pauling theory," and the rigorous treatment of these problems is at present prevented by lack of adequate knowledge of the electronic structure of the transition elements in the metallic state. It appeared reasonable to expect that investigation of the magnetic properties, which are related to d-shell electrons, may help in clarifying the physical nature of the foregoing empirical correlation. Qualitative tests of samples of various compositions have shown that certain u alloys become ferromagnetic at liquid nitrogen temperature." The present investigation was undertaken to determine whether or not low temperature ferromagnetism is characteristic of a large variety of u alloys and to establish how the Curie temperatures of ferromagnetic u alloys are influenced by changes in composition and in lattice parameter. In the first portion of the in- vestigation, Curie temperatures were measured for a series of u alloys containing either vanadium or chromium with one or two of the elements manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel. In the second phase of the work, data were obtained on the Curie temperature of ternary (Fe, Co, Cr)a, (Fe, Cr, Mo)a, and (Co, Cr, MO)U alloys, as a function of composition and of interatomic spacing. Experimental Procedures High frequency vacuum melting in high purity re-crystallized alumina crucibles was employed in the preparation of the u alloys, using metals whose lot analyses are given in Table I. Approximately two-thirds of the alloys were analyzed chemically, the analytical results being in acceptable agreement with the intended compositions, as seen in Tables I1 and 111. The specimens were annealed for homogen-ization in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct He and 8 pct H, mixture or in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes at temperatures from 780" to 1300°C, depending on the temperature range of the u phase field for the particular composition. The annealing temwerature and time for kach alloy are given in Tables 11 and 111. Curie points were determined by an induction method; the change with temperature of mutual inductance between two coils was observed when the i-u specimen was inserted into the flux path between the coils. The transformer consisted of three coils each containing 1200 turns of 0.0050 in. diam enameled copper wire. The center coil, P in Fig. 1, served as the primary coil, and was linked magnetically with each of the two secondary coils, S, and S? which were connected in series opposition. In 1984/85 financial year Australia produced 529 thousand barrels per day (kbd) of crude oil. By far the major contribution (453 kbd) was light waxy oil from offshore Gippsland, Victoria. When these discoveries were made in the latter 1960s, imported oil was available in abundant supply and at low prices. Because of this, the Gippsland producers persuaded Government to control the marketing and pricing of their crude, and thus provide the required security of offtake. Political events in the middle East created supply shortages during the 1970s, and dragged up government selling prices for OPEC crude oil. Thus Arab Light crude that sold for less than US$2/barrel (bl) in 1970 reached $34/bl in 1981. Following the consequent decline in world oil demand, in 1982, Australian refiners sought to evade their obligation to lift Gippsland crude. Hence, in 1983, the Government was forced to introduce a floor quota of 385 kbd of Gippsland crude liftings and to allow producers to export any additional production refiners did not require. On expiry of the old arrangements, Government introduced a partial free market from January 1985, whereby the balance in excess of 350 kbd may be sold to Australian refiners at negotiated prices, or exported as before. In 1984/85 exports were some 90 kbd and will be higher in the current year. About half this total has been exported by BHP, providing valuable experience and lessons which are described in the paper.

The Bi-Directional Static Load Test (BDSLT) is a test that determines the capacity of piles when loaded under bi-axial static compression. In recent years the BDSLT has seen an increase in demand due to its safety, speed, and affordability. This innovative foundation testing method has been universally used over the last 50 years, however respective codes and standards have only been published within the recent years. Detailed test procedures and methodology are expatiated in the ASTM D8169 M-18 [1], and the IRC 78 2014 Clause 709.2.5. [2] These standards provide the minimum requirements for the execution of the BDSLT. In this paper we did a comparative study of both standards envisaging to bring attention to the similarities and discrepancies found therein, with an aim to highlight the impacts and challenges that differing provisions of each standard could pose on the conduct of the BDSLT. Discrepancies found have been explained on the basis of geotechnical engineering theories and relevant field occurrences observed by superior engineers. Additionally, we emphasize on the relevance of experienced engineer’s judgement when utilizing the standards.

Large diameter drilled deep foundations are a widely utilized solution throughout North America and the world. Numerous design and construction techniques developed over the past 100 years have made this type of foundation a robust, reliable, and efficient foundation option to support a wide variety of structures. From bridges, to marine structures, to high-rise buildings, drilled shafts are a time-tested approach for all types of infrastructure projects. Yet, what remains ambiguous in the current state of engineering practice is how to respond when a shaft is constructed that, for potentially different reasons, may or may not meet the design requirements? In this case, what are the best practices for Contractors and Engineers when a structural, geotechnical, or material integrity issue arises during construction? In our experience the answers to these questions are not widely known, but are profoundly important so that engineers can have tools available to confidently and efficiently address concerns, and provide a path forward for the project. This paper seeks to answer the above questions by presenting details of different remediation approaches using the results of several case studies where structural and geotechnical engineering methods, combined with non-destructive integrity testing (NDT), were employed to evaluate the acceptance of “questionable” drilled shafts. Through multidisciplinary techniques like Cross-hole Sonic Logging and 3-D Tomography which enhance the resolution of anomalous zones and defects in concrete, the development of concrete strength estimates from non-destructive testing data, and executing innovative structural and geotechnical analyses to evaluate the as-built conditions, drilled shafts that might have historically been rejected were ultimately accepted by the project team. This paper presents a series of unique case studies that together depict a roadmap for a comprehensive approach to reliably evaluate and guide the industry to address these types of drilled shaft construction issues.

O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar a construção de uma coluna de flotação piloto de baixo custo, que será utilizada para concentração de minerais ferrosos. O trabalho contém os passos seguidos no projeto de construção do equipamento (descrição dos sistemas operacionais; dimensionamento; desenhos do projeto; levantamento dos materiais, fornecedores e orçamentos; testes dos sistemas de aeração e bombeamento, além da montagem) e também, os resultados dos ensaios exploratórios realizados com uma amostra de minério de ferro, contendo 38% de Fe, doada pela Companhia Vale S. A. proveniente da Mina de Alegria, Mariana/MG. Nos ensaios preliminares, obtiveram-se teores de Fe no concentrado próximos a 50% e uma recuperação metalúrgica em torno de 90%. O resultado foi considerado adequado, tendo em vista que foi realizado apenas um estágio de concentração. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a montagem e operação da coluna foram satisfatórias e o protótipo pode ser utilizado como unidade piloto para a avaliação de diferentes condições de processo.

Drilled shafts are being used as foundation support for parabolic solar troughs at the Genesis Solar Project being constructed near Blythe, California. Three types of drilled shaft foundations are required for the project. At project build-out, there will be a total of 23,008 drilled shafts installed at the site. Preliminary designs for the axial and lateral capacity of the drilled piers were based on conventional geotechnical engineering methodologies and soil-structure interaction. The drilled shafts and subsurface conditions were modeled through the use of the computer program LPILE v6.0. Conducting lateral load testing of drilled shafts was considered appropriate to confirm or modify the geotechnical parameters used in the preliminary design. The lateral load testing program was conducted to provide site-specific test data that would allow the design engineers (both geotechnical and structural) to predict the actual performance and adequacy of the proposed drilled shaft foundations and improve the efficiency and hopefully reduce project costs. The lateral load testing was conducted within two solar fields at the site. Three pairs of drilled shaft foundations were installed in each field, instrumented, and laterally loaded to determine load-deflection response. A value-engineered option, proposed by one of the drilled shaft contractors, was also load tested. The results of the load-deflection data obtained in the field was used to modify the soil modeling used in the original L-PILE analyses and adjust the production drilled shaft lengths. Based on the results of the lateral load testing, the in-situ moduli of the subsurface soils were significantly increased over that assumed in the preliminary analyses. Based on the final soil-structure interaction analyses, the preliminary drilled shaft lengths were reduced by 2 to 2-1/2 feet. This resulted in an overall reduction of 55,654 feet of drilled shaft construction on the entire project, a savings of approximately 16.5% over the preliminary design.

OF the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of standard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inclines, the installation of mining-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1909. The ore in its natural state contains a very large percentage of water, which increases to some extent with the depth below the surface. Near the surface it is red in color, with somewhat granular structure. The color gradually changes with depth, finally reaching a bright yellow. The consistency also changes towards, the bottom to a clay-like, sticky mass. The relative proportion of red and yellow ore is quite variable; in some places the yellow reaches close to the surface, while in others the red extends almost to the underlying serpentine. Fig. 1 is a map showing the Mayari division of the Spanish-American Iron Co. The ore lies on an irregular plateau about 15 miles long and 5 miles wide at the widest point, entirely covered with pine trees and brush, which grow directly on the ore. The elevation at the northern extremity, which is approached by the railroad, is about 1,700 ft. above sea-level. At the southern end the general elevation is about 2,000 ft. The Prairie du Sac Dam, located on the Wisconsin River, northwest of Madison, Wisconsin, was constructed 1912-1914. The spillway is an Ambursen-type, consisting of a series timber pile supported pier and buttress walls and rollway slab. The timber piles supporting the spillway, numbering approximately 5,000, have deteriorated, and the spillway structure was underpinned with over 700 micropiles as part of a design-build construction project. The underpinning micropiles needed to be arranged to avoid interferences with the existing timber piles, requiring the micropiles to be installed in the open spaces between the piers and buttresses. Inevitably, the installation of the new micropiles encountered obstructions, including existing timber piles out of alignment, as well as timber piles used to support the original construction activities and sheet pile used to control water during the original construction. This paper discusses using finite element analysis to model the spillway structure to estimate the vertical and horizontal stiffness with an extensive sensitivity analysis was performed during the design phase to account for anticipated construction challenges and potential variations in the underpinning performance. The inherent rigidity of the spillway structure allowed for load distribution to the underpinning system even when new micropiles needed to be re-located and aligned to avoid interferences with existing timber piles and other abandoned foundation elements dating back to original construction.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

Continuous open - circuit attrition grinding of a coarse commercial kaolin to produce paper - coating clay , which must have a particle size analysis of 70 percent or more minus 2 - micron equivalent spherical diameter ( esd ) , was studied by the Bureau . The coarse clay , containing about 11 percent minus 2 -micron esd material , was ground in a 10 - inch- diameter attrition grinder using continuous single- and multiple - stage grinding circuits . The clay feed rates varied from 10 to 480 pounds per hour . In some tests , the influence of varying loads of sand grinding media on particle size reduction was studied . Batch grinding tests also were made for comparative purposes . Multiple- stage grinding gave better results than single - stage treatment when equivalent raw clay feed rates were used . In the best test made , a product containing about 80 percent minus 2 - micron esd material was obtained when grinding 60 pounds of raw clay per hour using a three - stage grinding circuit . Power consumption in the test was about 318 kilowatt -hours per ton of clay treated or 475 kilowatt - hours per ton of minus 2 - micron esd material produced .

Heavy mineral sand exploration drilling prior to the 1970s generally utilised open hole auger and air-blast type drilling. However, mining reconciliations were poor and limitations on accuracy and precision of drilling results were severe.Working with the exploration companies, Wallis Drilling principals designed various systems, including what was termed the ‘Eneabba System’ and then the ‘Capel Twin-Tube System’. Eventually the company with its improvements developed and patented the Aircore Drilling System.Aircore drilling has subsequently become recognised as an excellent drilling system for exploration and mine-sample drilling that gives good precision and accuracy in sampling both above and below water. Its use has also been extended to many other commodities and is used in a number of overseas countries.This paper documents anecdotally the development of the system, identifying problems encountered during the times it was evolving and of the means to overcome the problems as being the documentation of the story by the inventors and developers in Wallis Drilling Company. Aircore drilling system is a Western Australian technological development owing its existence to the designing and incorporation of a number of discrete improvements along the way and recognises the tenacity and inventiveness of all who contributed to the system, in both Wallis and also in a number of companies that gave the impetus to succeed.

As the resources sector becomes tougher with rising costs and cyclical metal prices, mining companies need to continue to reduce their costs and do more with less. Many new resource projects fail to come in under or on budget based on Feasibility Studies. Particularly, capital expenditure (CAPEX) proves difficult to achieve for resource projects. A number of resource projects have failed because of aggressive plant CAPEX cost cutting resulting in projects with no surge capacity and are unable to achieve design throughput. In addition, the plants are not operable because of the omissions. In recent times many businesses have also experienced the "costs" of simply implementing aggressive operating "cost cutting” measures as a strategy for solving business performance problems. This paper looks at technology driven, employment related, luxury cuts, department cuts and restructuring cuts. In the past companies used an incremental approach based on the use of past budget information as an integral part of the budget construction process going forward. The use of performance reports and Management Information Systems (MIS) is examined along with the role of continuous improvement in achieving sensible cost cutting.

The policy of buying crude oil on a gravity basis , recently instituted by the major crude oil purchasing agencies in the Mid- Continent field , has caused a new and vital interest to be taken in the work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for preventing evaporation of crude . From the early years of the industry oil men have recognized that the gravity of crude oil is usually an index of the gasoline content , but it has not been so generally known that the gravity of the crude oil decreases if evaporation is permitted . In 1919 the Bureau of Mines began a survey to determine the evaporation losses of crude petroleum in its various stages of handling from the well to the refinery , The results of this study are presented in Bulletin 200 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Evaporation losses of petroleum in the Mid- Continent Field , Bulletin 200 , U. s . Bureau of Mines , 1922. ) and Bulletin 225 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Methods of decreasing evaporation losses of petroleum , Bulletin 225 , U. S. Bureau of Mines , ( In press ) The findings of this survey were so startling that soon after the preliminary report had been published , several tank companies began manufacturing vapor- tight tanks for the purpose of reducing these important losses . Since that time the development of this type of apparatus has been so rapid that today , every oil trade journal carries numerous advertisements of vapor- tight tanks and equipment as well as technical articles dealing with various problems in connection with the elimination of evaporation losses , whereas three or four years ago the subject was scarcely even thought of. The present report has been prepared in response to numerous requests for information on the apparatus actually being used to prevent evaporation losses . At this time oil operators are also extremely interested in holding the lighter fractions in the crude oil in order to prevent a lowering in gravity . The practice of removing the vapors from crude- oil tanks by means of a slight vacuum and extracting the gasoline from them is not discussed here .

A recent Nevada Gold Mines research program focused on pressure oxidation pre-treatment of a Carlin-type double refractory ore from the Turquoise Ridge Mine. The research team found that both arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous matter were highly oxidized within an hour at 300 °C using a bench-top autoclave reactor and that the gold recovery from the residues after cyanide/carbon-in-leach approached the technical limit set by the amount of gold encapsulated by silicate minerals. Although the 60-min pre-treatment at 300 °C yields robust performance when treating a whole ore, copper additives can catalyze the oxidation rate of carbonaceous matter and reduce the residence time needed at elevated temperature. Certain gangue minerals are susceptible to dissolution in acidic solutions at 300 °C, and this may cause poor gold recovery. This recovery challenge is mitigated by keeping free acid in the discharge solution below a key threshold.

Na Aperam South America, a geração interna de carepa metálica utilizada no PTG (Pré-tratamento de Gusa) como agente dessiliciante do gusa é insuficiente para suprir toda a demanda, sendo necessária a aquisição regular do insumo junto a outras siderúrgicas. Com o reaproveitamento interno da carepa pelas siderúrgicas, a compra do material no mercado ficou muito dificultada. Visando complementar a insuficiência do suprimento de carepa, foram estudadas e testadas duas alternativas de agente dessiliciante, tendo como fonte dois resíduos gerados no beneficiamento da carga metálica da Redução, a saber: Finos do Minério Serra Azul (100%) e Finos de Pelota (80%) misturados aos Finos de Minério Serra Azul (20%). Após os testes, a segunda alternativa se mostrou mais viável técnica e economicamente. A taxa de dessiliciação do novo agente se apresentou, inclusive, melhor que a da própria carepa. A geração mensal do novo insumo (700 t), complementada com a da carepa interna, conseguem suprir integralmente a demanda de agente DeSi para o PTG.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flotation method for concentrating spiral tailing produced from pilot plant tests on the Champion mine ore fines . The feed material contained about 49 percent Fe and 15 percent SiO2 and was posed mostly of specular hematite , muscovite , and chlorite . Bench- scale , batch flotation research developed a reagent suite composed of tall oil - fatty acid , fuel oil , sulfuric acid , sodium fluoride , and sodium silicate for recovery of iron minerals in the froth product . Concentrate made with the reagent suite contained 87.3 percent of the iron and analyzed 65.6 percent Fe and 1.9 percent SiO2 . Continuous flotation tests were made with a nominal feed rate of 400 lb /hr , but without middling recirculation . Using nearly the same amount and complement of reagents as in the batch tests , three similar continuous tests gave concentrates averaging 63.9 percent Fe and 3.1 percent Sio while recovering about 86 percent of the iron .

Granites are classed as igneous rocks ; they have been formed by the solidification of rock magmas or solutions from deep within the earth . It is an almost invariable law of nature that magmas which cool quickly form fine- grained or glassy rocks , while those that cool slowly are completely crystallized and are coarser- grained . Granites , being of the latter class , are regarded as having attained their solid form at considerable depth below the surface under conditions of high temperature and pressure . The constituent minerals crystallized out slowly , the crystals interlocking with one another . The great depth of overlying rocks that must have been present when crystallization took place has been removed by erosion over large areas on the surface of the earth , in consequence of which granites appear at or near the surface in many localities . The chief minerals of which granites are formed are feldspars , quartz , and either mica or hornblende . All the essential constituents except mica are as hard as , or harder than steel , therefore granites are difficult rocks to cut and dress . Granites are usually red , pink , or gray , depending on the color of the feldspars . If hornblende or black mica is abundant the rock may be dark green or almost black . Granites are characterized by massive homogeneous texture . They are classified as fine- grained , medium- grained , or coarse - grained . Medium- grained granites are those in which the feldspar crystals average about one- fourth inch in diameter . If relatively coarsegrained crystals appear in a fine -grained ground mass the rock is designated a porphyritic granite . Uniformity in texture and grain size are desirable in building and ornamental stone , although occasionally rocks of variable texture , such as the porphyritic granites , are used . A rock may have the mineral constituents of a granite but show a banded or platy structure due to recrystallization , folding , or other changes while the rock was in a plastic or semimolten condition . Such metamorphic rocks are called granite gneisses . They are used occasionally for building purposes but not as commonly as the uniformly textured granites . - Granites are named from the most abundant mineral other than quartz and feldspar that they contain , being called , for example , biotite granite or hornblende granite . - Commercially other igneous rocks granitoid in texture but more properly classified as syenites , diorites , or gabbros may be classed as granites . Thus the " black granite " of Little Falls , Minn . , is a diorite , and the " black granite " of Eastern Pennsylvania consists of diabase or gabbro . The question is sometimes raised as to the depth to which a granite occurrence may extend . In this respect granites differ notably from limestones , sandstones , or other sedimentary rocks . The sediments were originally laid down in relatively thin beds , and individual formations providing rock of economic value may be quite limited in thickness . Usually the usable beds range between 40 and 200 feet in thickness . On the other hand , granite comes up from below . Its depth is unknown , but in general is very great . It may even be measurable in miles . The reserves of material at depth are to be measured , therefore , by the economic depth of working rather than by the vertical extent of the rock mass . Exceptionally , granites of commercial quality may occur in sills or sheets of limited thickness flanked on either side by rocks of different character , as , for example , at Westerly , R. I.

The Birmingham coal-mining district of Alabama has many local physical conditions that contribute largely to the proble of preventing coalmine fatalities . Coal : nes of Alabama have been under the supervision of the State mine inspector since 1892 , and reports have been made with increasing completeness since that time . The U. S. Bureau of Mines has maintained a station of the safety division in the district since 1912 to cooperate with operators and the State in the advancement of safety in mining . A description of conditions in regard to fatal accidents as they have been and as they now are in Alabama , compared with the entire United States , will indicate the progress that has been made and that should still be made in reducing fatal mine accidents .

The Bureau of Mines conducted solvent extraction batch tests to evaluate the usefulness of neodecanoic acid ( NDA) for extracting Co 3+ from ammoniacal leach liquors high in ammonium sulfate . This work is an outgrowth of previous Bureau research in which technology was devised for the recovery of cobalt , nickel , and byproduct copper from domestic laterites . The previously devised technology uses an oxidative ammoniacal sulfate leach to treat the laterite , and nickel and copper are then recovered from the leach solution by solvent extraction and electrowinning . This report deals with the subsequent solvent extraction of cobalt from the nickel - copper raffinate solution . The results showed that about 70 pct of the contained Co 3+ can be extracted batchwise at pH 8 using NDA ( a 10 - carbon - chain highly branched carboxylic acid ) . However , NDA had a solubility of approximately 0.6 to 0.8 g / L in aqueous raffinate following extraction , and this high solubility makes it impractical for use with alkaline solutions that are low in cobalt .
