Esta competencia necesita complementarse con el capital privado nacional, sea asociado con el Estado o de forma independiente, ajustándose a los fines del desarrollo nacional a través de un sistema organizado de refinerías y plantas de concentración. En este sentido, el Estado debe considerar un programa de proyectos mineral a través del apoyo del capital privado nacional o de un inversionista extranjero.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines recently conducted a limited-scope study on the use of lineament analysis and electromagnetic geophysics to better identify the surface expressions of faults at the Cimmaron Mine near Raton, NM, an operating longwall mine in the York Canyon mine complex. Two normal faults were encountered by the mine, one during gate road development and drilling and another only through drilling. The potential ground control problems and offsets associated with these faults will severely impact long-range development plans, so it is essential to know the lateral extent of these faults within the coal reserves. The surface topography at the site is fairly rugged, yet outcrop exposure is poor. There is no obvious visible geologic evidence to indicate that the faults identified at depth extend to the surface. Both the geophysical and remote sensing techniques provided information on the presence and extent of important geologic structures which could not be gained just from drilling and surface outcrops. The geophysical surveys also were invaluable in confirming the presence of subsurface geologic structures in the vicinity of the lineaments assumed to be associated with the faulting.

The composite nature of titanomagnetites found on the west coast of the north island of New Zealand is an important parameter in the beneficiation of the black beach sands for export to Japan. To investigate this composite nature, borehole and plant samples from the Waipipi Ironsands Ltd property were subjected to a series of separations in heated Clerici solutions at densities varying from 3.2 to 4.6 g/cc. The resulting density fractons were analyzed magnetically and a set of distribution curves for composite grains proposed. In addition the experi¬mental data was plotted to produce titanomagnetite sand 'washability curves" which illustrate the possible problem areas in beneficiation that may arise due to composite titanomagnetite grains. From this data a set of guidelines are suggested for interpreting the curves in terms of ease of gravity concentration. The composite nature or liberation of titanomagnetite grains is shown to favor high and low grade composites with few intermediate compositions being isolated. The relationships between grain size, borehole depth and liberation are examined and related to beneficiation procedures for the black sand deposit.

"Accurate, easy to obtain, and reliable methods of measurement are the cornerstone of shaft and tunnel developments - during their sinking, operation and maintenance, or in some cases, remediation. This paper presents a new methodology to capture existing shaft conditions in such a manner that they can be transferred from the field to a digital copy, where they can be stored and used for engineering design purposes in a space not directly affected by the costs associated with schedule and equipment performance. The methodology utilizes basic principles of excavation alignment (plumb lines and survey instruments) while adding modern LiDAR, geolocation and survey control tools that can more completely capture the surrounding environment. The complete cycle of collection, processing, and delivery of pertinent information underground can take under an hour. During sinking, capturing data as a live stream measurement and being able to assess the alignment of the shaft liner can be critical to meeting rigid design tolerances. As sinking progresses, small changes in alignment or liner deviations can be captured and immediately corrected. Likewise, post-construction as-built conditions can be recorded and digitized, which will allow the mine personnel to compare the proper working condition to the actual condition years later. Observed changes can be identified and planned as future shaft repair works. This methodology has been developed and successfully deployed during the on-going sinking works of the two shafts at the Jansen Potash Project in south-central Saskatchewan and is described in greater detail in this paper.INTRODUCTION Light Detection and Ranging (or LiDAR) scans of the BHP Jansen Production and Service shafts during construction identified sections of both shafts where the internal radius of the temporary primary liner was insufficient to accommodate the tolerances of the permanent liner that was to be installed inside the temporary liner. These locations are referred to as “tights”. The “Tights Removal Program” was designed to collect high resolution point clouds of the shaft, using stringent survey control, that could be compared to the design profile to generate a heat map of locations for removal of up to 75 mm of steel-fiber-reinforced, 70 MPa concrete liner. This work was all on critical path, which made it valuable to save time on the schedule. Because concrete removal was a time-intensive task, it was essential to locate and remove only the concrete that would encroach on the planned permanent liner, while attempting to maximize the amount of cutting time. Removal was carried by a road header attached to a Brokk(R) 160, a small multi-attachment demolition machine."

Conventional project valuation techniques, such as discounted cash flow (DCF) method, are more frequently being criticised for the manner in which they consider the interacting effects of uncertainty and project structure (including management flexibility) on project value. Modern asset pricing (MAP; often called ?real options valuation? when applied to the analysis of flexibility) is a more general valuation framework that corrects many of the shortcomings of common valuation methods. Previous mining applications of MAP have tended to treat the ore deposit as a homogenous entity. While useful for demonstration purposes, this is inadequate for practical application in industry. This paper presents a MAP valuation example that allows for the heterogeneous nature of an ore deposit. It shows that deposit structure may increase the complexity of the mine planner?s decision so that results of a standard DCF analysis, or a simple MAP analysis that ignores the details of deposit structure, are misleading. In the example, a management is considering the development of an adjacent low-grade zone while mining operations in a high-grade zone are ongoing. If the low-grade zone is developed before high-grade reserves are exhausted, the proposed development will include both low-grade zone development and a capacity expansion to handle additional low-grade reserve production. If development of these reserves is delayed until the high-grade reserves are depleted, then the low-grade reserves can be developed without a capacity expansion. A typical DCF analysis would reduce the management?s decision problem to three alternatives: 1) continue mining only in the highgrade reserves, 2) immediately develop the low-grade reserves and expand capacity, and 3) delay low-grade zone development until the high-grade reserves are exhausted. The model presented here allows the management to reconsider the development and capacity expansion decision on a discrete half-year basis. It delineates price regions, for given levels of high-grade zone reserves, in which it is optimal to develop the low-grade zone, defer low-grade zone development and abandon the mine irrevocably. The model presented here extends the ability of mine planners to describe actual project structure while using the MAP valuation framework that is already noted for its capacity to combine project uncertainty and risk insights with a dynamic project description.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has become a routine requirement for mining operations on federal lands. A similar document is being required in developing countries. Baseline studies are needed prior to writing an EIS and these studies involve surface water, groundwater, air quality, and wildlife/ native plant evaluations. The required baseline hydrology and geochemical studies are often the most expensive and lengthy evaluations. This paper summarizes the hydrology and geochemical baseline studies required for .An EIS and presents suggested methods to expedite these studies and to shorten the time and the cost to complete the studies and the EIS.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a finite element analysis of roof stresses associated with a 4-foot-high by 18-foot-wide underground coal mine entry. This analysis starts with known loading conditions determined in an underground coal mine in West Virginia and is extended to other possible underground loading conditions. The roof failures predicted by the finite element analysis under known loading conditions correlate well with the roof failures observed underground. The most probable failure modes are identified for the various loading conditions considered. Various failure preventive measures are discussed.

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to discuss in a general way the heavy oil situation in Western Canada, and particularly to acquaint those in the oil industry who have not participated in the heavy oil end of the business with past and current developments. The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."

Mineral processing is characterized by a constant adaptation to changing raw materials and market conditions. It is the link between the mined raw material and a marketable product. As a lot of high grade reserves are exploited, a steady deterioration of raw material quality can be observed. At the same time, the customers´ requirements for product purity and consistent quality increase. Indian iron ores are characteristically friable in nature that results in generation of sizeable quantity of fines (0-10mm) every year during various stages of mining and processing in the country with grade varying from 50-60% Fe(T) and are high in silica/alumina (Al2O3 5-8%). The fines generated cannot be directly used for iron making (blast furnace/DRI units) in the country due its physical and chemical properties; therefore, large portion of it gets exported or dumped. Value addition to iron ore fines through various activities such as beneficiation & palletization is the need of the hour, which will not only be economically beneficial to the mining sector in the long run but also generate value addition & employment opportunities. Incentives may be given for adopting latest technologies for direct use of fines in iron making by agglomeration of fines in the form of Pellets and Sinters, as fines forms considerable part of iron ore resources. Due to selective mining, although the iron content of the ore is high but the alumina(Al2O3) content in iron ore is also significantly high which demands for beneficiation as high alumina will create problem during iron making like higher fuel consumption, poor quality of slag produced, reduced productivity of B.F. all mineral has been engaged in hematite iron ore beneficiation with its gravity and magnetic separators since the mid-nineties. The delivery of jigs started for the upgrading of iron ore for its utilization in a Direct Reduction Plant in Australia. Since then, various other installations with jigs for lumps and fines as well as upstream separators for fines are in operation in Brazil, Australia, India and South Africa. Low grade run of mine and/or dump ores are being processed with alljig®-, allflux®- and gaustec®-WHIMS as the core equipment. The article describes the technology in use, the characteristics of various iron ores and the product qualities achieved. The data presented shows the specific advantages of jig application on iron ore upgrading due to the possible high gravity cuts and the easy and low cost operation. The allflux®- technology provides the big advantage of high capacities and a two-step process, both in a single unit. The gaustec®-wet high intensity magnetic separators offer high capacity in combination with unsurpassed process flexibility. "Air parameter monitoring systems, regardless of gasometrical protections, provide a significant number of measurement data. The obtained data broadens the knowledge on processes taking place in underground workings and shows the relationships and influence of machines and technological processes on the variability of ventilation parameters in the areas of longwalls. Nowadays, computer simulation methods are increasingly used to reproduce the flow of air and methane mixture in the area of longwalls equipped with shearers. The paper presents the results of a research experiment covering a long-term observation of a longwall area during mining with a shearer using sensors from the mine's monitoring system. Data from sensors for methane concentration, pressure and velocity were used and additional ventilation measurements were taken to determine the parameters characterising the air flow in the area. The influence of different machine cycles in the longwall on the changes of air parameters in the area of the longwall was shown. A numerical model of the ventilation area was developed and the computer program VentZroby was used for the calculations, which allows for the simulation of the process of ventilating the area of the active longwall during the extraction of coal with the use of a shearer and haulage of the run-of-mine. Computer simulation of the influence of the shearer's operation and the methane inflow associated with the distribution of the mixture of air and methane was carried out. The results of the simulation were compared with the data recorded by the monitoring system’s sensors during the measurement experiment. Comparison of the recorded methane concentration courses with the results of a computer simulation of the air and methane flow conditions in the mining area showed changes in the gassiness. INTRODUCTION Studies carried out in the Polish and global mining industry show that methane is an obvious factor in limiting mining production due to the loss of continuity in the operation of longwall complexes in hard coal mines under methane emission hazard (Schatzel et al., 2008). In addition, methane hazards have a significant impact on the safety of the operators of machinery in the longwall. The requirements of Polish regulations and the practice of safe operation of mining longwalls require correct determination of gas concentration, volume flow, as well as pressure and temperature of the flowing air. As part of the research undertaken in the Budryk (Wasilewski, 2010) and Bielszowice (Dziurzynski et al., 2009) mines to assess the methane hazard in the longwalls and workings in the vicinity of the longwall, research experiments were carried out, during which air parameters were recorded by the mine monitoring system and additional testing equipment in different cycles of shearer operation."

This paper discusses an ongoing field study in southern Illinois (USA) that focuses on: 1) Identifying mechanisms of instability in the set-up rooms (SR) and their T-junctions with headgate and tailgate entries, 2) Developing alternate 3-entry and 4-entry set-up rooms geometry using 3-D numerical analyses, 3) Implementing developed geometries in cooperation with mining professionals and regulatory agencies, and 4) Demonstrating performance of implemented geometries through field monitoring. Illinois longwall mining operations typically experience ground control problems (roof falls, rib sloughing, floor heave, etc.) within SR layouts and around the T-junctions of SR. These occur around the areas where the SR for adjacent longwall face (to be mined) connect with the SR of the previously mined face, and around the tail-gate entries of the mined-out longwall face and around the T-junctions of SR. The problems manifest as highly fractured immediate roof strata, major shear zones in the roof, horizontal displacements within the excavations that result in shearing off the heads of the bolts, floor heave and severe rib sloughing. Similar observations have also been made in longwall mining in Utah.

The effects of substituting cobalt for nickel on the acid corrosion resistance of two types of austenitic stainless steel were determined. Cobalt substitutions to a maximum 2.2 weight-percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels. Total immersion corrosion tests were made in 10 volume-percent hydrochloric acid, and boiling-acid tests were conducted in 65 weight-percent nitric acid and in undiluted glacial acetic acid. For modified type 309 in acetic acid, corrosion rates decreased for additions greater than 0.57 weight-percent cobalt. Corrosion rates increased as cobalt was increased up to about 1 weight percent for modified type 302 in nitric and hydrochloric acids and for modified type 309 in nitric acid, but these rates decreased with a further increase in cobalt content. A gradual increase in corrosion rates with increasing cobalt content was shown for type 302 in acetic acid and for type 309 in hydrochloric acid. Cobalt substitutions in larger amounts (above a ratio of 8 Ni to 1 Co) may increase the corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steels.

This paper outlines a comparison of heavy liquid and heavy suspension separation methods for iron ore characterisation.As part of Arrium MiningÆs program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in its two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed for the upgrading process has become a major focus.Iron ore deposits almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively dense) iron mineral. Iron ores are found with a range of iron contents, giving rise to density variations.At present the industry relies on heavy liquid separation techniques for the evaluation of iron ore samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. There are only a few high-density liquids available, which are both high-cost and highly toxic.Low-toxicity solutions that can be utilised at relative densities up to 3.0 have been developed. However, highly-toxic organic liquids are required presently to achieve relative densities beyond 3.0.Bromoform which has a specific gravity (SG) of 2.89, and diiodomethane (SG 3.31) are commonly used; both present significant health and safety hazards.æClericiÆs solutionÆ (mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate) provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is currently conducted by a limited number of laboratories worldwide.An alternative to ClericiÆs solution and organic liquids is a low-toxicity, high-SG, suspension technique, which has been demonstrated successfully for heavy mineral sands. This heavy suspension method employs mixtures of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions.Heavy liquid separation is not commonly used as part of routine iron ore feed characterisation due to the expensive, toxic and time consuming nature of the technique. Our results show that the heavy suspensions method can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and are outlined and results compared with results using ClericiÆs solution presented.Heavy suspension technique provides a theoretical/absolute separation of a particular sample. By placing an iron ore sample in a suspension of a particular density, it produces two products: a sink fraction and a float fraction. As iron oxides-hydroxyoxides are denser than the gangue minerals associated with the ore, particles that have high iron content will sink and the particles with gangue association will float. This process is repeated over several densities, thus also enabling separation of the constituent iron ore phases. A theoretical grade and a theoretical mass recovery can be calculated. With these calculations, a grade-mass recovery curve can be constructed for any element that is of interest.This type of characterisation can be used to either prepare OBP feed-piles of known processing characteristics, or to benchmark the performance of the process against what can be theoretically achieved on a continuous basis.CITATION:Begelhole, J, Jasper, J and Koroznikova, L, 2013. The Bituminous Coal Mining Industry of the Federal Republic of Germany produces nearly 100 million t/yr of clean coal. The largest coal mining area is the Ruhr District with dimensions of 100 x 40 km (65 x 25 miles). Figure 1: Here is the general administration of Ruhrkohle Akteingesellschaft RAG with its three divisions. Other coal mining areas in Germany are the Saar District and the Aachen District. Ruhrkohle produces 70 million t/yr of clean coal. The company operates 28 mines in the Ruhr District with an average raw coal production of 18000 t/day. Their average mining depth is 831 m (2740 ft.) and the average seam thickness is 177 cm (70 in.). Figure 2: Preparation plant reject is 44.6%. All following production figures will be with reference to raw coal because the raw coal production is the technically relevant number. Mining operations are mainly in non-dipping coal deposits whereby mechanized equipment for flat seams is also applied to deposits dipping up to 45? Coal extraction is done exclusively by the longwall method. Approximately 200 longwall installations are in production at any time. The average longwall length is 221 m (730 ft) ranging between 140 and 290 m (460 ft and 960 ft). The average longwall advance of all operations is 2.8 m/day (8.4 ft per day). Average production

"El presente estudio describe el proceso de combate contra incendios efectuado por la mina de Cerro de Pasco. Dicho procedimiento incluye una revisión anterior al año 1936 en dos etapas, las técnicas actuales y los planes futuros preventivos sobre incendios. Anteriormente al año 1936, los siniestros ocurrían en los tajos del último tipo y la forma de contrarrestarlos era a través de tapones, aislando la zona de incendio y creando un enfriamiento por medio de chimeneas de ventilación. Sin embargo, esta forma de combate contra los incendios no resultó efectiva, dado que no evitaba completamente el ingreso del aire por medio de los tapones y a su vez, la proliferación de minerales con el tiempo volvía inaccesible la zona. Por tal motivo, la minera solicitó los servicios de un consultor, quien propuso tres sistemas: inundación de la zona del incendio, sofocación del incendiopor medio de anhdriddo carbónico y el sistema Plenum. De los tres sistemas, se consideró a este último pues mantenía la zona de incendio bajo presión de aire y no alteraba el resto de la zona de trabajo. Posteriormente se sugirió el uso del sistema ""Slimming"" o relleno de lodos, los cuales cubrían hidraúlicamente los espacios vacíos alrededor del incendio con un material inerte, adquierendo la forma de un fluído. La efectividad del método era suficiente que fue adoptada a partir de 1938 hasta el presente. Entre los procedimientos actuales se propuso el reemplazo del pino de oregón por la madera de eucalipto por su costo y composición menos inflamable. Asimismo el entablado del piso se sustituyó por una capa de concreto de tres pulgadas de espesor, limpieza del tajeo y equipamiento adecuado de las chimeneas, la ventilación adecuada, el entrenamiento permanente de las seis cuadrillas de combate, construcción de galerías y cruceros auxiliares de transporte, el relleno por lodo y el uso del sistema de alarma denominado ""Stench Mercaptan"", que se inyecta en las tuberías de aire comprimido y sistema telefónico. "

THE development of the oil and gas resources of Western Canada is not, as many suppose, a new industry. For more than half a century an intensive search for these valuable products of nature extended from near the western edge of the Precambrian Shield to the Pacific coast, and from the International boundary north to the Arctic circle. The chief centre of interest to the oil prospector has, however, always lain in that region lying east of the first range of the Rocky mountains and confined largely within the boundaries of the Province of Alberta. Although there are many geological problems yet to be worked out in this Province, the oil-well driller has helped in no small way in determining sub-surface conditions and distribution of rock formations. The chief geological conditions as they affect the drilling of wells are generally re-cognized, and for this purpose the Province may be partitioned into three main divisions: first, the disturbed belt or foothills region extending along the eastern edge of the Rocky mountains; second, the Alberta geosyncline, a broad trough lying to the east of and parallel to the disturbed belt and from which the formations rise eastward to level off and form, third, the plains ? ? region, extending over the rest of the Province. A relatively small area in the northeastern part of the Province is underlain with Precambrian rocks and may be excluded from this classification, as it is of no interest to the oil prospector. The foothills, or disturbed belt, has presented the greatest difficulty to drilling, though it has produced the largest yield of oil within the Province to date. Within the foothills belt, the rock formations consist largely of hard shales interspersed with layers of abrasive sandstones, which wear out drilling bits at an alarming rate. The strata, in most flaces, dip steeply and are cut by numerous thrust faults. Although some o the faults have great displacements, their presence may easily be overlooked or the extent of the fault misinterpreted. Many a prospect well has been located on what appeared to be a suitable geological structure only to find, after drilling through a normal succession of rocks for 4,000 feet or more, that the drill had passed through a major fault plane to a younger formation than that in which drilling was started. Only a repetition of formations already drilled could be expected at greater depths.

Posteriormente apareció, Minasragra, cuyo principal déposito aperturó un nuevo campo industrial y tecnológico en el Perú. Sin embargo, este no tuvo un manejo adecuado que terminó por agotarse en dicho yacimiento. En ese sentido, el presente texto busca reactivar su producción a través de nuevas exploraciones, explotación y se comercialize los nuevos productos que resulten del tratamiento.

Producto de una de las operaciones realizadas en la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, se obtienen algunos elementos y subproductos químicos como el arseniato de calcio que ocupa el primer lugar en ventas en dicha compañía. Por ello, el objeto del presente texto describe el proceso y el uso de As2 O3 para la fabricación del arseniato de calcio en la planta de fundición de La Oroya, como su aplicación de insecticidad mineral en la agricultura. Dentro de este periodo, el elemento químico será recuperado en el cottrell de arsémico, de los humos provenientes de los hornos tostadores de los minerales de cobre, precipitando una concentración oscilante entre 40 a 45% con un contenido de cobre de 4%. donde el polvo sufre una tostación para así concentrar el cobre por sublimación del arsénico. Asimismo en este sistema de fabricación de arseniato, la liberación del As2 O5 del piroarsenIato de calcio se realiza por ataque con ácido sulfúrico, garantizando la pureza de este óxido en la precipitación final del proceso. En consecuencia, la aplicación del arseniato de calcio, como insectida inorgánico mineral protege el sistema ecológico, dado su bajo contenido de arsénico soluble en agua, al tiempo que se ajusta a las reglamentos oficiale vigentes del país.
