O presente artigo investigou como a condição de operação das zonas de resfriamento em máquina de lingotamento de placas contribui para o desempenho de lanças air mist. Tal investigação foi realizada no laboratório da Spraying Systems Brasil a partir das premissas de projeto de uma nova máquina de lingotamento e um novo conceito de lança air mist: menor consumo de ar comprimido, amplo turndown e qualidade de cobertura por toda a curva de operação do resfriamento. As curvas de performance foram montadas para diferentes condições de utilização de ar comprimido: de 1,5 a 4,5bar de pressão constante. Cada lança teve das vazões mínimas às máximas de água ensaiadas. A qualidade do perfil do jato produzido foi verificada para cada ponto das curvas obtidas, em mesa de distribuição no laboratório da Spraying Systems. Com as imagens em mãos, foi possível selecionar aquelas condições de vazão de água e pressão de ar comprimido com melhores perfis de jato e cobertura. Como resultado, a fabricante da máquina pode validar e/ou modificar a curva de trabalho de resfriamento da máquina e garantir as melhores condições do perfil do jato e uniformidade de resfriamento.

A two dimensional cellular automaton (CA) model coupled with finite element (FE) method has been developed for simulating the formation of solidified microstructure during beam blank continuous casting, which represents columnar and equiaxed dendrites growth in the case of detailed secondary cooling boundary conditions. In this model, a new adaptive mesh division is proposed to couple CA cubic lattice and irregular FE mesh of beam blank. A double-accuracy liner interpolation method is employed to obtain micro CA temperature field via macro FE calculation. The nucleation process and the velocity of dendrite tip are calculated by continuous nucleation model and KGT model, respectively. Moreover, the preferred orientation of dendrite growth is determined using a probabilistic model. The effects of super heat and casting speed on the microstructure characteristics are analyzed. This model can be applied to optimize processing parameters for beam blank continuous casting basing on microstructure evaluation.

Mixing time is an important parameter when considering chemical and thermal homogenization in steelmaking reactors. It can also be relevant in the kinetics of chemical reactions. Different methods have been used to estimate mixing times in physical models of steelmaking reactors. In the present work a new method to estimate mixing times in physical models has been proposed. This method can be used when transparent fluids are used to simulate the liquid steel and the slag. Results of mixing times in a physical model of a BOF obtained with different techniques were compared. It was shown that the new method is more reliable and consistent than the common methods based on electrical conductivity measurements and colorimetric analysis.

A well-maintained and low cost mining operation today requires the use of condition monitoring techniques. At ERA - Ranger Mine oil analysis, vibration monitoring, infra-red themtography, and performance analysis have been successfully applied over the last four years to lower operating and maintenance costs. All condition monitoring is scheduled through a comprehensive in-house developed maintenance management system known as the Engineering Information System (EIS). (EIS) is used extensively at Ranger to ensure consistent frequency and recording .of all condition monitoring data. This paper provides an insight into the benefits of condition monitoring and explores the future direction for condition monitoring techniques at Ranger.

The Southern Company is one of the nation's largest electric utilities and is the parent firm of five operating companies: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric and Power. Another subsidiary is Southern Company Services (SCS) which provides engineering and technical sup-port to the five operating companies. This technical support includes the procurement and supply of over 40.9 Mt (45 million st) of coal annually for the 22 coal fired plants in the system. Approximately 80 percent of this tonnage is purchased under long term contracts and the remaining 20 percent is purchased on the spot market. The coal is principally supplied from Alabama, Illinois Basin and the eastern Appalachian coal fields. Most of the coal is delivered by unit train and barge but one plant in Alabama receives all its coal by truck and conveyor belt.

Industrial minerals are plentiful in Alberta. Although exi ting in variety and in quantity, they constitute a minor segment of the province's mineral industry, which is based on oil and gas. In 1983 Alberta led all the other provinces in value of mineral production with a total of $22,2 18 million, 62 per cent of the total for Canada. Of Alberta's total, $22 million or about 3 per cent came from the indu trial minerals. Nearly two-third of this production is accounted for by sulphur, which is actually a by-product of the oil and ga industry. Alberta ranked third among the province in industrial minerals production for 1983, with about 20 per cent of the national total.

High solid corrosion protective coatings were prepared by the dust of the converter with an average particle size of 59.33 μm. The effect of different amount of benzyl alcohol diluent on the performance of high solid anti-corrosion coatings was studied. With the increase of the amount of diluent, the viscosity of high solid anti-corrosion coatings reducing, the film apparent bubble content decreasing, and film resistant to salt water corrosion ability decreased, while acid corrosion capacity enhancement. When the dosage of diluents is 15%, the coating film is more resistant to acid corrosion.

Epoxy matrix composites reinforced with up to 10, 20 and 30 vol% of continuous and aligned natural mallow fibers and 30 vol% of mallow and jute hybrid fabric were for the first time ballistic tested as personal armor against class III 7.62 mm FMJ ammunition. The ballistic efficiency of these composites was assessed by measuring the dissipated energy and residual velocity after the bullet perforation. The results were compared with that in similar tests of aramid fabric (Kevlar™) commonly used in vests for personal protections. Visual inspection and scanning electron microscopy analysis of impact-fractured samples revealed failure mechanisms associated with fiber pullout, rupture and layers delamination. When compared to Kevlar™, the mallow fiber and hybrid fabric composite displayed practically the same ballistic efficiency. However, there is a reduction in both weight and cost, which makes both, mallow fiber and hybrid fabric composites, a promising material for personal ballistic protection.

In over 40 years of operation, engineers at Aluminium Oxid Stade GmbH (AOS) have acquired a lot of experience whereby they have developed a series of optimizations regarding the specific primary energy consumption. The tube digester technology, invented by VAW in Germany and applied on an industrial scale for the first time in Stade, was brought to perfection by its innovative cleaning methods, which led to a constantly high heat transfer, low pressure loss and excellent availability of the digesters. Further improvements such as the heat recovery from the exhaust gas stream of the salt heater as well as the optimization of one of the fluid bed calciners and the installation of a combined heat and power generator (CHP) led AOS to where it is now—a leading alumina refinery with regard to the lowest energy consumption per ton of alumina.

Tables showing world trade in metallic mineral raw materials during the years 1953 through 1957 have been prepared for the following twenty-one commodities: alumina, aluminum, bauxite, chromite, copper concentrates, partly refined and fully refined copper metal, iron ore, pig iron, iron and steel (simple shapes), lead concentrates, lead metal, manganese ore, mercury metal, nickel ore, concentrates, and matte, nickel metal, raw pyrites, sintered pyrites, tin concentrates, tin metal, zinc concentrates, and zinc metal. In each instance, the amounts given by the importing country were used except when statistics from the importing nation were lacking, incomplete, or misleading. To show the considerable divergence between importing and exporting country totals for the same years, the complete mercury table is given and, in parallel columns, shows the comparable tonnages of importers and exporters. Tables for the other twenty commodities are presented in summary form. The data of the concentrate tables are used with those of the corresponding metals as a basis for a discussion of trade in concentrates versus trade in metals. The data of all twenty-one tables provide the basis for testing the thirteen rules governing international trade in metal raw materials which I first published in Mining Engineering for July 1955. Because the 1953 through 1957 data are far more complete and considerably more extensive than those on which the 1955 rules were based, it was found possible to deduce five additional rules and to modify three of the original thirteen appreciably. 1. Introduction.-The first part of this papers treats of the causes and the restraining of piping in steel ingots; the second& considers the causes and the restraining of -segregation; and the third proposes certain precautions in engineering specifications concerning these two defects. Into their causes I have looked carefully, with the purpose of arriving at rational methods of restraining them, and at efficient ways of detecting. and measuring the harm which they cause, so as to benefit the public by reducing this harm at once effectively and with the least expense to the manufacturer, and therefore in the end with the least expense to the consumer. In Part I., I infer that the pipe is chiefly due to what I, call the virtual expansion of the outer walls of the ingot in the early part of the freezing. I find that the upper and smooth-faced part of the pipe probably forms while the interior is still molten, but that the lower, steep, and crystal-faced part probably forms in metal which is already firm. Of the five causes which may co-operate to limit the depth of the pipe, I find that three-blow-holes, sagging, and the progress of freezing from below upwards-are usually effective. I find that the pipe may be lessened by casting (1) in wide ingots,; (2) in sand molds, especially if these are pre-heated (this is rarely expedient); (3) at the tops instead of at the bottom; (4) slowly; (5) and with the large end up; (6) by the use of a sinking-head or other means of retarding the cooling of the top; (7) by permitting blow-holes to form; and (8) by liquid compression.) Most of these I consider in some detail, and in particular I dwell on the advantages of casting with the large end up, and I propose certain administrative arrangements to permit this.

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. Cette étude vise à caractériser les fluides impliqués dans la minéralisation par les inclusions fluides et par les isotopes stables ainsi que de les comparer avec ceux du gîte de classe mondiale de Campbell-Red Lake. Quatre types d’inclusions ont été notes, incluant des inclusions carboniques, aqueuses-carboniques, aqueuses et aqueuses avec halite, les inclusions carboniques étant la variété la plus abondante. This study is primarily directed toward providing an understanding of the economic complexities associated with subsidence damage on the surface resulting from underground mining. Some of the pertinent theories on the physical stresses involved are reviewed, and both remedial measures and relevant laws in various countries are discussed. Part I (Chapters 1-3) is an historical overview of various aspects of subsidence problems (theoretical, remedial, and legal) during pre-World War I, between World Wars, and post-World War II, respectively. Part II (Chapters 4-9) presents a comprehensive analysis of the economic aspects of subsidence in relation to the following mining alternatives: (a) carrying out the lowest cost mining method without regard for any surface subsidence, (b) special mining techniques, (c) partial mining, (d) full recovery with stowing, and (e) sterilization or leaving the mineral unmined beneath selected areas. These alternatives are evaluated in terms of their measurable expenses.

"Sulphur deposition on the internal wall of a pipeline is caused by the temperature effect on the solubility of sulphur in the carrier fluid and is not due to particulate sulphur present. Deposition can be completely eliminated by proper insulation of the pipeline to prevent ""cold-spots"" and the resultant temperature gradient necessary for sulphur to precipitate from solution. Friction head losses for sulphur-condensate slurry systems are quite acceptable from a technical and economic standpoint and, in fact, are less than many present commercial slurry systems. Slurry transportation of sulphur in a hydrocarbon pipeline is a viable possibility and promises to have economic advantage over currently accepted transportation modes."

"Processing parameters of a submerged entry nozzle (SEN) affect significantly on the patterns of fluid flow and temperature distribution in beam blank continuous casting mold with double SEN s. Effect of the geometry structure and immersion depth of double SEN s on the fluid flow in beam blank continuous casting mold was studied by water modeling. Results showed that, the optimal nozzle inner diameter was 40mm, and immersion depth was 70-90mm. The mold surface fluctuation, slag distribution, impact depth and removing rate of inclusion particles were discussed under different processing parameters of double SENs. As the results indicated, slag distribution was more non-homogeneous with a higher casting speed. The results provided basic data for the design and optimization of SENs used in beam blank continuous casting mold.IntroductionNear-net-shape casting has the distinct advantages of less rolling procedures, higher metal recovery and lower energy cost. Therefore, in the recent decades, one of the recent trends in the steel making process is moving toward near net shape casting. in which beam blank casting is a typical technology. (Read at the Philadelphia Meeting, February, 1878.) UNTIL June, 1868, it had not been attempted, either in this country or abroad, to manufacture by mechanical means, from anthracite coal-dust, artificial fuel for domestic use. Several attempts had been made to utilize coal-waste by converting it into a fuel for manufacturing purposes, but none of the processes were original, and they were merely applications of the well-known European processes and machinery, slightly modified by American ingenuity and mechanical skill. With one exception all those attempts have been failures. The great difficulty in the application of European processes and machinery has always been the limited production, and the excessive cost of the manufactured product, as compared with the cost of mining and preparing the ordinary anthracite coal for the market. The only serious and intelligent attempt to manufacture, on a large scale, artificial fuel for manufacturing purposes, has been made by the Anthracite Fuel Company, whose works are erected at Fort Ewen, near Rondout, New York. This company, organized under the auspices of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, had to go through the usual course of difficulties, breakages, and disappointments, which seems to be the lot of every new industry. Thanks, however, to the energy and perseverance of Mr. L. L. Crounsse, a gentleman of means, from Washington, D. C., the enterprise succeeded, and it is to-day established on a permanent basis. In order to increase the production, and to reduce its cost, the Anthracite Fuel Company was compelled to change most of its plant, and to erect more powerful machinery, producing lumps of a larger size, almost twice the size of the lumps made previously by the same company. The probability of making an exploration discovery in Canada can be calculated from Derry's (1970) data on exploration expenditures and number of discoveries over the last nineteen years. Considering an average exploration "try" to be $30,000, the probability of a discovery with one try has decreased tenfold from about 0.01 in 1951 to 0.001 in 1969. A plot of these probabilities can be extrapolated to the future, giving a 1969-71 three-year average probability of 0.00096 with 90 per cent confidence limits of 0.00042 and 0.00153. Using this probability, various calculations can be made, such as (1) the probability of making at least one discovery for any given exploration expenditure, (2) the probability of ultimate ruin or survival of the exploration investment process and (3) the expected value of an exploration investment. There is a critical minimum amount per discovery that must be re-invested in exploration, no matter how large the original investment is, for exploration to survive at all in the long run. Currently, this critical minimum is $31,200,000 with 90 per cent confidence limits of $19,600,000 and $71,400,000.

Recycling of such municipal solid wastes as glass containers, metal cans, and newspapers has received increasing attention recently. However, municipal solid wastes account for only 1% of the total solid waste stream in the United States. The remainder includes hazardous and non-hazardous industrial wastes. Generators of industrial wastes are facing higher landfill costs. Future liability potential, and public image concerns which are forcing them to seek innovative and often profitable solutions to minimize, reuse, and recycle their waste streams. Opportunities for the mining industry in industrial recycling include recovery of mining wastes and by-products, and utilization of mineral products for treating waste streams.
