The Cienega project, now under construction by Penoles group, is located in the mountains of the State of Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in the 4-km long system of veins, which will be extracted by underground methods. The planned 1000 tpd process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994.

The Athabasca tar sands of Alberta are an increasingly important source of crude oil for the North American continent. Published figures indicate estimates of recoverable resources in the tar sands at some 300 billion barrels of synthetic crude of which some 86 billion barrels can be recovered by surface mining techniques. At the present time, two commercial plants are in operation, Great Canadian Oil Sands Limited and Syncrude Canada Ltd. Their present combined capacity is approximately 150,000 barrels per day. Some of the factors which will make this oil expensive will be noted here. The location of the present producing plants is 500 kilometres north of Edmonton at an elevation of approximately 320 metres. Recorded temperatures range from +38 to -55 degrees Celsius. Wind velocities are not high but the chill factor with even a slight breeze and minus 40 degrees is very uncomfortable.

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

Recent work on beneficiation of the .Alabama red iron ores and ferruginous sandstones has brought out interesting new facts on particle-size reduction that axe a valuable supplement to what is already known.4/ The work was done by the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with-the University of Alabama, University, Ala., on two samples from the Birmingham district. One was an oolitic red iron ore containing about 35 percent iron; the other was a ferruginous sandstone containing about 25 percent iron, particularly attractive because of its low phosphorus content. In both samples rounded quartz (sand) grains were embedded in an oolitic, "onion skin" matrix of hematite. The hematite carries varying amounts of clay, which limits the grade of concentrate that can be made. The clayey hematite is soft, so that the rock crumbles readily under pressure. The sand grains shell out like corn,, and without much exaggeration the mill used for differential grinding might be called a "sheller,"

"INTRODUCTION The strategic importance of zinc warranted investigation of the Silver Eagle zinc prospect, which was first examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in January 1943.From October 12, 1943, to March 16, 1944, the Bureau explored the deposit by trenching, core drilling, and sampling to establish the amount and grade of ore and to test for the presence of sulfide-ore minerals at depth.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Tellurium in raw slime has recently been recovered as copper telluride in Onahama Smelter & Refinery. The slime is decopperized with sulfuric acid solution in conventional leaching tanks. The pregnant leach solution containing 45 g/l of copper and 1 g/l of tellurium is introduced to a copper telluride recovering reactor. The tail solution from the reactor containing less than 20 mg/l of tellurium is recycled directly to circulation tanks of copper electrolysis. The impurities of the product copper telluride is kept below 1% without any purification.

"The conceptual basis of the developed model is based on the ideas that evolution of geological-geomorphological structure of the CCZ is controlled by four types of geologic factors: geodynamic, sedimentary, volcano-tectonic and erosion-lithodynamic. In terms of time span two factors (geodynamic and sedimentary) can be considered as permanent and the other two as sporadic.The geodynamic factor is responsible for two interrelated geological processes. One is going under conditions of the axial zones of spreading centers and results in formation of the CCZ basement. Historically this process is considered as a starting point for each of the heterochronous fragments of the CCZ. The second one controls gradual shifting towards the Pacific Plate (Hawaiian direction) and subsidence to greater depths of the neogenic fragments (basement). Thus, those processes control basic topography, geomorphology and the seabed depth within the CCZ.Volcanogenic-hydrothermal activity of the EPR is one of the main sources of the ore components, which finally compose manganese nodules as a result of complicated processes of their dissemination and transportation to the bottom in dissolved and organically bound forms.The role of the other constant factor (sedimentary) is displayed in two ways. Firstly, initial relief is smoothed under the influence of this factor, which, subsequently, makes favorable conditions for manganese nodules formation. Secondly, it favors transportation of the majority of the ore components, participating in manganese nodules formation into zones of active nodules formation."

The new Track Etch* technique for uranium exploration has been utilized in several survey programs conducted during the last few years. The results from these programs have been very encouraging, and new uranium ore bodies have been discovered by using this new technique. The Track Etch method is being used in several exploration programs in various locations around the world. The Track Etch exploration technique utilizes small pieces of special radiation-sensitive plastic film to detect the presence of radon gas which is released by uranium ore bodies. Because of the selectivity and sensitivity of the technique, ore bodies not normally detected with other surface or airborne monitoring methods are found. Since no large equipment or special training of personnel is needed, the Track Etch technique is easily used in field operations. The basis for the Track Etch method, its application in field exploration programs, and the results obtained to date in locating uranium ore bodies is discussed.

"With up to 2,300 m (7,545 ft) of rock on top of it, the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is scheduled to go into regular operation in December 2016 in the Swiss Alps, is not only the world’s longest, but also the deepest railway tunnel ever built. Accordingly, the temperatures in the tunnel are very high, with the surrounding rock expected to reach 45° C (113° F) once the tunnel is fully operational. Since unrestricted rail operations are only permitted in temperatures of 40° C (104° F) or less, the heat has to be controlled with suitable equipment. Large fans developed and built especially for this application by TLT-Turbo GmbH provide fresh air for regular operations as well as during maintenance and repair work. Separate fans ensure that the emergency exits are properly ventilated in case of fire. In addition to coming up with a technical solution that could handle the special challenges of this project, the engineers and planners had to develop detailed preliminary plans as well as a sophisticated logistics and installation concept.The Gotthard Base Tunnel consists of two 57-km (35-mile) long tubes, one in each direction. Including all connecting and access tunnels, the entire underground system measures 152 km (95 miles). At Faido and Sedrun, at approximately 16 and 36 km (9 and 23 miles) respectively, two multifunction stations were built that cut each of the two tubes into three sections of roughly equal length. Here, trains can make emergency stops and change tracks, if necessary. This is also where eight large axial fans made by TLT were installed that exchange the air, i.e. they extract a certain amount of heated air and inject the same amount of cool fresh air a few hundred meters further down the train tracks. In addition to the four exhaust and four supply fans, 24 so-called jet fans were installed along with associated components like silencers, shut-off dampers, drives and lubrication systems from TLT.In addition to exchanging the air, these fans are used to enable maintenance and repair operations in the tunnel. Current plans call for blocking each tunnel tube for one night per week in order to perform preventive maintenance work, thus enhancing the tunnel’s overall functionality and availability. During these hours, many people will be in the tunnel who require fresh air. “One of the major criteria for winning this bid was the fans’ ability to quickly switch between a wide-range of modes. TLT fans are among the best in the world in this regard,” said Andreas Kuhn, TLT’s project manager for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, about the selection of his company’s fans for this project."

Iron sulphate jarosite through which iron in zinc sulphide concentrate feed is removed from the production circuit of conventional roast-leach-electrowin process, is chemically unstable and environmentally hazardous even if it is mixed with lime. If zinc silicate ore is used at similar chemical conditions in place of calcine in the jarosite precipitation, the resultant silico-jarosite residue having been mixed with lime is chemically stable and environmentally friendly. The recovery of zinc from silicate ore is also higher than that from calcine.

In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

"INTRODUCTION Freeport-McMoRan is a leading international natural resources company that operates large, long-lived, geographically diverse assets with significant proven and probable reserves of copper, gold, molybdenum, cobalt, oil and natural gas. Freeport-McMoRan is the world’s largest publicly traded copper producer and largest producer of molybdenum. The Sierrita mine is an open pit truck and shovel operation from which copper and molybdenum are produced. An important key to Sierrita’s success lies in their ability to realize their plans in the field. In certain circumstances, the mine plans are not achieved, and the operation fails to meet its targets which is an issue revealed in reconciliation reports. This technical session discusses the methodologies and procedures used at Sierrita to monitor the implementation of the mine plans, measure the performance of the operation and reduce the variance between plan and actual. Ensuring the operation stays on target is vital so mine productivity and profitability can attain its maximum potential. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Sierrita mining complex is located in Pima County, approximately 20 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona as shown in Figure 1. The first mining claims at Sierrita date back to the late 1800s while underground mining activities started in the early 1900s. However, open pit development of Sierrita began more than 50 years ago to become the modern mining complex it is today. In 2009, Freeport-McMoRan purchased the adjacent Twin Buttes copper mine, providing significant synergies in the Sierrita minerals district. This venture included the potential for expanded mining activities, operations growth for mining copper and molybdenum, and reclamation activity. It should be noted that in addition to copper and molybdenum, the Sierrita mine produces rhenium which is a rare and highly value metal. The ore deposit contains oxide and sulfide mineralization. The oxide ore is delivered to the leach process while the sulfide ore is routed to the crusher and mill circuit 4,700 jobs on Arizona’s economy Freeport-McMoRan partners with the communities near Sierrita to provide programs that contribute to their sustainability"

"NINETEEN sixty-six is a year of unusual significance in our Institute and in our country. It marks two-thirds of a century of service by the Institute to the people of the mineral industry and two-thirds of the century that Sir Wilfred Laurier said ""belongs to Canada."" As we meet here today within the historic walls of Canada's oldest city, a city that looks back on three hundred and fifty years of progress, I am reminded that it is almost a third of a century ago -in April, 1934 -that here in Quebec I first attended an Annual General Meeting of the Institute. It occurred to me that it might be appropriate to examine briefly the change that the middle third of this century has brought in the affairs of the mineral industry and, with some trepidation, to consider the prospect for the third that lies ahead.Opinions differ as to the relative importance of factors that have been responsible for the expansion and growth of Canada in its first hundred years. Some will say that it has been due to the abundance and fertility of agricultural land, others to the early enterprise of the railroads, and financiers believe that the banking system has been a major factor; -the fisherman -the forester -the teacher -each has his own view. I suspect, however, that most of us here would subscribe to the thesis of T. A. Rickard -miner, author, imperialist -who wrote, a gene-ration ago, ""Trade follows the flag, but the flag follows the pick,"" and thus agree that the finest contribution to progress, to wealth, to extension of frontiers and to inter-national trade has been provided by the mineral industry."

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. "With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

The EMEW® cell has been developed to overcome a number of inherent limitations in conventional electrowinning technology, particularly the high cost and restricted process windows characteristic of conventional hardware. The technology has been widely demonstrated to achieve high performance for various metals under chemical conditions well outside the limits required for efficient operation of conventional cells. This process flexibility offers significant opportunities for cost savings. in recovery of zinc from primary and secondary sources. The EMEW® technology is now available on a fully engineered basis, as a versatile commercial alternative to conventional electrowinning hardware. Application of the EMEW® cell for recovery of secondary zinc material offers significant advantages to the recycling industry. For example, a selective caustic leach can be used where there are high levels of iron or other contaminants in the target material. The reagent requirement is minimal as most of the caustic is regenerated in the bell and zinc dust that may be required for electrolyte purification is produced in the cell. A high purity zinc powder or cathode is produced in the cell. In the case of acidic zinc electrolytes, the cell is capable of operating over a much wider range of operating conditions than a conventional cell.
