This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). "2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1964; in general; the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. A modified Unterzaucher method was applied to the direct determination of oxygen in coal. Coal samples were pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere, and the gaseous oxygen compounds liberated were converted to carbon monoxide by a platinized-carbon catalyst at 9000 C. After passing over heated copper and through a tube containing soda-asbestos and magnesium perchlorate, the purified carbon monoxide was oxidized to carbon dioxide by iodine pentoxide--liberating an equivalent amount of iodine. The iodine was titrated with 0.02 ~ sodium thiosulfate; in a few tests the weight of carbon dioxide produced was determined. Direct oxygen determinations of coal included organic oxygen from the coal substance, plus a small quantity of inorganic oxygen derived principally from carbonate minerals and from combined water of silicates in the mineral matter. The influence of mineral matter on the direct oxygen determination was investigated by testing (1) untreated coal, (2) demineralized coal from which most of the mineral matter except pyrite was removed by treatment with hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acids, and (3) coal samples treated with dilute hydrochloric acid.

Research was conducted to examine the feasibility of extracting manganese from Georgia umber ore by a three-stage continuous sulfuric acid-ferrous sulfate pickle liquor leaching process. A continuous cyclic process for treating the umber was operated successfully, using a synthetic solution simulating a ferrous sulfate fortified anolyte solution discharged from a manganese electrolytic cell as the leaching medium. Leaching efficiency based on removal of the manganese from the ore ranged from 83 to 89 percent for all systems tested.

Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

El presente texto analiza la problemática del oro en Madre de Dios a través del informe presentado por el Ministerio de Energía y minas en 1979 donde se debe brindar oportunidad a todo aquel que desee explotar los recursos naturales, sin que afecte el desarrollo normal de sus actividades. El problema se origina como consecuencia de la "Ley de Promoción aurífera" que vive ajena a la realidad del Departamento de Madre de Dios y desaprovecha la tecnología disponible. Para ello, se requiere de una política aurífera donde se busca crear nuevos recursos, considerando el canon al oro, madera, castaña, pago de peaje, aportación económica de los peajes y escala de concesiones de recursos naturales. Asimismo, se debe crear más de 50 mil puestos de trabajo en minería aurífera, la empresa minera del oro, la construcción de un central hidroeléctrica y de una nueva ley aurífera.

The cleaning of fine coal, particularly for metallurgical use, is receiving greater attention. An increase in the proportion of fine coal in the run-of-mine product has been created by changes in mining practice, and a concur-rent deterioration in the quality of the fines has occurred because of more widespread full-seam mining. These two factors, augmented by the depletion of premium beds of metallurgical coal in some areas and the resulting shift to "dirtier" beds, are providing the impetus for adoption of improved cleaning techniques. For example, froth flotation, which has been used for years in a few preparation plants, now is gaining more rapidly in acceptance. Similarly, the dense-medium cyclone, which is used widely in Europe for making difficult separations, recently has been introduced to the United States. Regardless of the cleaning process employed, the finer sizes of coal can be treated with maximum effectiveness only when they are removed from the run-of-mine product and treated separately. No present process can treat the full range of sizes together with complete effectiveness. Flotation is applicable only to the coal finer than a top size ranging between 14-and 48-mesh, and cyclones require removal of all material finer than 0.5 to 0.3 mm. from the feed. Thus, the trend toward more-effective cleaning of the fine coal imposes the attendant problem of fine screening. Whereas in the past there was little need to screen finer than about l/4-in., present developments indicate that fine screening will become increasingly prevalent.

"A central composite experimental design was used to determine empirical relationships between the operating variables of a ball mill and the characteristics of the ground products. The independent variables selected for the study were the work index and size distribution of the feed material, the feed rate and the pulp density. The measured responses included product size distribution, product surface area, viscosity of pulp discharge, weight of dry solids in mill, mill time constant and emitted sonic vibrations. The ball mill was operated continuously in open circuit during each experimental run.Multivariable regression techniques were used to derive linear empirical models from the experimental results. Of the four factors studied, the grindability of the feed material significantly affected every measured response. The size distribution of the ground product was affected significantly by the feed rate and the size distribution of the feed, but not by the pulp• density. Feed throughput capacity and pulp density were significant to the viscosity of the pulp discharge, the weight of solids in the mill and the mill time constant. Significant first-and second-order models are given for the above relationships. The relation-ships between the characteristics of the sonic vibrations of the operating mill and the various dependent variables have not as yet been established."

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted full-scale field tests in electro-kinetic dewatering and consolidation of slimes in cooperation with the Hecla Mining Co. at two of the firm's underground mines in north Idaho. To test the technique on new deposits, 4,000 ft3 of slimes from a collection sump, pumped into a watertight stope equipped with electrodes, were treated in two steps. Immediately after placement, direct current was applied using a floating electrode to hasten settlement of suspended fine particles. After removal of clarified water, the residue was further dewatered and hardened with electrokinetic treatment. In 25 hours, the material had become firm and dense with a surface capable of supporting workmen. In testing old deposits, 10,000 ft3 of slimes, placed in an unused tail drift 10 to 12 months previously, were treated. This material was sufficiently consolidated by electrokinetics to allow its removal from the mine with standard ore-handling equipment. In both tests, electrokinetic treatment densified slimes in a relatively short time with moderate power consumption.

Laboratory-scale research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a new process for treating electroplating and other wastes. Various acid and alkaline cyanide wastes were combined under controlled conditions to neutralize the wastes and to almost completely precipitate the metals and cyanides. The metals were subsequently recovered for recycling; the cyanides can also be easily recycled. The process was successfully used to treat the major types of electroplating and etching wastes, containing Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn, and to treat both concentrated and dilute wastes. The economic aspects of treating concentrated electroplating, etching, and anodizing wastes are especially attractive because of the low cost of mixing two wastes, the high value of the recovered metals, and the simplicity of the recovery procedures. The filtrates from the waste-plus-waste step were relatively harmless compared with the original wastes and met Public Health Service standards for free cyanide content. Free cyanide ions were not detected in most of the filtrates; the limit of detection was 0.03 ppm. Only small amounts of HCN were produced during the neutralization; the HCN was collected and neutralized.

This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

The role of pre-conditioning in a caving operation has multiple benefits, ranging from assisting with improved caveability, normalising fragmentation and improving draw point hang-up frequency. At Newcrest Mining’s Cadia Operations, both the Ridgeway Deeps block cave the Cadia East Panel Cave have utilised pre-conditioning using hydraulic fracturing. Seismic response data inside and outside the pre-conditioned volume show the benefit of treating the full caving block. Cadia East has further developed pre-conditioning to mitigate developing seismic hazards associated with major structures (fault-slip events) and managing mine-wide seismic hazards in new caving operations where the potential for large damaging seismic events exists due to high stresses and hard competent rockmasses. A case study reviewing the impact of pre-conditioning to mitigate seismic hazard associated with fault slip is presented. Cadia East operation undertook a targeted hydraulic fracturing program and reduced the overall number of large events as an example of the benefits of pre-conditioning. This paper will review the application of Hydraulic Fracturing at Cadia and discuss the geotechnical and seismological parameters of seismic events that occur within and outside of pre-conditioned rockmass volumes to demonstrate the benefits that Hydraulic Fracturing bring to future caving operations.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

While there have always been mining activities on the outcrops of the copper deposits around Tsumeb, large scale mining activities in Namibia only started in colonial times. Originally focusing on the known deposits, the then German Geological Survey and independent geologists soon discovered significant deposits all over the country. This eventually lead to intensive mining operations all over the country on copper, gold, diamonds, fluorspar and finally uranium. Ever since those days, mining has been one of the major economical factors of Namibia?s development, as shown in picture 1. In the Central Namib Desert mining on base metals started in 1901, and first uranium deposits were discovered as soon as 1910, later followed by others, this did, however, not lead to any mining activities on those uranium deposits in the following decades. [ ] The upswing in the use of nuclear energy in the 1960s and early 1970s triggered some extensive uranium exploration worldwide and also in Namibia. Several airborne radiometric overviews were conducted by the Geological Survey at this stage and eventually the first uranium mine was commissioned in 1976. In the following three decades, the focus of prospecting activities in Namibia shifted away from uranium again. However, since 2000 the forecast for a developing and growing global economy and its even stronger growing energy demand have triggered a large number of nuclear energy projects worldwide, thus increasing the installed nuclear energy generation capacity from 387 GW today to more than 490 GW in 2025.

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.

Like so many installations of its type approaching middle age, the ore processing and shipping facilities in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, have taken a lot of twists and turns in their lifetime. The object of this paper is to lead you through these twists and turns and some of the reasoning for them. The need for additional sources of iron are in the United States became evident during the time of the second world war. An exploration team from U. S. Steel located further high quality direct shipping iron are in commercial quantities near Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela in 1947. Basic decisions were made to develop these reserves for export via the Orinoco River through a new shipping port to be built at the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni Rivers. The basic concept was for the ore to be loaded directly to ocean going vessels. This was something of a gamble since the basic economics depended upon successfully opening up the main channel of the Orinoco River to deepwater vessels, and the Bethlehem Steel mine in the same area was already working with shallow draft river boats and a transfer station on the coast. Always, the basic philosophy has tended to be to plan with expansion in mind. The original conveyor systems were 1.52 m (60 inches) wide with 200 idlers, whereas 1.07 m (42 inches) or 1.22 m (48 inches) wide conveyors could have carried any production foreseen at the time of installation. Stockpiles have been located and designed with room for expansion. Basic designs have had dotted line future expansion blocked in.

During the course of the cooperative smoke abatement investigation carried on by the Bureau of Mines , the city of Salt Lake and the University of Utah during 1919-1920 , a study was made as to the suitability of Utah coals for by-product coking with particular reference to low temperature coking . was done because it was realized that a smokeless fuel for domestic consumers was the best remedy for this class of smoke producer . A report of the technical side of the work was included in the final report of the cooperative investiga- Since this report was written (June 1 , 1920) further work has been done by other investigators .
