Kaolin is a hydrated aluminum silicate mined primarily in middle Georgia along the "fall line", the location of the coast line in prehistoric times. It is used extensively as a filler for paper, insecticides, tires, plastics, a pigment for paints, as a coating for fine gloss paper, and for high grade ceramic products, such as catalytic converters. During its journey from the open pit mine to its final use, kaolin takes many forms, and must be handled in many different ways. The purpose of this presentation is to follow kaolin through its process and briefly describe some of the methods Georgia Kaolin Company, one of the world's largest kaolin producers, uses to handle and convey its product and some of the peculiarities involved.

Conventional methods for selecting a production plan for an open pit mine is based on the assumption that ore grades throughout mine life as well as market variables are known with certainty. Another important issue that is also being ignored in the conventional procedure is the value of management flexibility to revise operating policy with time according to the arrival of new information. Based on this oversimplification of reality, an optimum mine plan that is thought to be maximizing net present value (NPV) of the project is selected. Given the multiple sources of risk affecting the estimated NPV, there is a high probability that the actual value will be different from that estimated. This could mislead decision making process regarding selecting an optimum mine plan. This paper proposes a multi-criteria ranking system for selection between alternative mine designs under both geological and market uncertainties. The system is based on integrating multiple market and geological uncertainties as well as the operating flexibility to revise the ultimate pit limits using a Monte Carlo-based real options valuation (ROV) model. To compare the methods, the article applies the proposed system, along with the conventional NPV-based method, to rank possible mine designs for a copper and a gold mine. It has been found that, considering multiple risk analysis measures while integrating uncertainty and operating flexibility results in selecting a mine design that is different from that selected by the conventional method.

Due to the large installed electrical power and the large number of electric drives in minerals and mining plants power factor compensation and harmonic filtering has always been an important issue. For the design of harmonic filter and power factor compensation installations several approaches can be taken. The paper describes different concepts and their advantages and analyzes special requirements and design considerations for minerals and mining plants. It also highlights areas where problems can occur and which points need to be addressed carefully. Optimized designs and solutions are discussed in case studies and the resulting energy savings and benefits for the plant operation are shown.

Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

Greece is the only EU country with extensive nickel laterite deposits. Since the 1960s, the Greek laterites are treated for ferronickel production via a pyrometallurgical route, which involves pre-reduction of the ore in rotary kilns and reduction smelting in electric arc furnaces. Due to the rising cost of energy and the decreasing grade of mined laterites, the pyrometallurgical treatment is economically marginal. For this reason, alternative treatment processes are currently under investigation. Potential applicability of hydrometallurgical treatment, using either H2SO4 or HCl, under atmospheric pressure conditions, for Ni and Co extraction from two low grade laterite ores, was examined in the present work. The two samples were selected to represent the different mineralogical composition of the saprolitic and limonitic ore deposits of the Greek laterites. The investigated parameters were temperature (65–90 °C), acid concentration (1–4 N) and solid to liquid ratio (10–30% w/v). The results indicated that HCl was more efficient than H2SO4 for the treatment of the saprolitic ore; Ni and Co extractions were very high for both elements, up to 98% and 96% respectively, while H2SO4 could leach efficiently Ni, up to 100%, but extracted only 34% of Co. Hydrochloric acid was also more efficient for the treatment of the limonitic ore, with Ni and Co extractions up to 98.3% and 87.6% respectively. With H2SO4 the maximum extractions were 71.3% for Ni and 52.1% for Co.

This work deals with the recovery of valuable metals from the ancient copper smelting slags located in Küre-Turkey. In this process, copper and cobalt were recovered in metallic form and/or as their compounds, whereas iron was recovered as magnetic oxide or pigment. Abrasive grit material was produced using reduced final slag. The process stages involved carbothermal reduction in a DC arc furnace, granulation, leaching, chemical precipitation, selective sulfidizing roasting and product preparations. In this paper, the process stages were described as theoretically and experimentally whereas slag and products were characterized in detail.

The slag chemistry in steel processing plays an important role in terms of the removal of impurities including alumina particles. In the present study, the dissolution of solid aluimina particles in CaO-based fluxes at the temperatures between 1450 and 1550 °C has been investigated to determine dissolution kinetics and mechanism. Alumina particles were added directly in the slags and the size of alumina particles was measured as a function of time using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The dissolution rate has also been obtained as a function of Si02, CaF2, MgO and MnO contents in the slags. The diffusion boundary layer between alumina and bulk slag phase has been observed and analyzed using SEM and EDX. In addition, some experiments have been performed for the dissolution of alumina in BaO-based fluxes.

An effective process plan is an important part of maintaining consistent recoveries in mineral processing operations. Traditionally, Mineralogical studies are completed using chemical and metallurgical methods to monitor recovery and elemental distribution. The development of mineralogy and more efficient processes in mineral analysis techniques means that mineralogy is now more accessible as an efficient and comprehensive study tool. As operating costs increase and feed grades decrease it is important to maintain tight control of process and ensured maximum recovery is maintained at all times. Just a few days of losses in recovery caused by changes in ore type or processing conditions can have a large effect on total metal recovery and profit. Mineralogical audits can be used to minimize these losses by monitoring the fundamental behavior of feed ore on a regular basis. Smart use of mineralogical studies can develop mineralogical and ore type benchmarks in a detailed, which can be used in process control and monitoring. Geological ore types can be used to identify key mineralogical parameters that may be used in routine and cost effective analysis. Mineralogical systems ideally suited to this because of the depth of information on everything from modal mineralogy to locking/liberation characteristics and mineral associations. Mineralogical studies can equally be applied to specific unit operations within the process, which can allow more detailed information to be gathered on areas of the process that have been identified as critical. This will be especially effective for flotation or oxidation processes where process parameters can be very sensitive to small changes in mineralogy. The combination of laser welding with Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMA W) forms the hybrid laser-OMA W welding. This process is an attractive tool with a high potential in welding lightweight structures, especially for aluminum alloys. For five years, this technology has increasingly attracted interest in both, industry (aeronautics, automobile, metal industries producing large structures) and academia (universities and research centers). Hybrid laser-OMA W welding process is generally accepted for its robustness, efficiency and flexibility. Coupling of a deep-penetrating laser beam with the heat and molten metal feeding of GMA W significantly expands the original welding application range of lasers. Its main advantages compared to the two individual components are deep and stable weld penetration, gap-bridging ability improvement, low distortion and easy filler metal addition. Hybrid welding allows a much wider groove tolerance compared to laser welding, especially for aluminum welding. Moreover, the reduction in distortion decreases the post-welding rectification needed and makes the assembly easier. In addition, if metallurgical factors are critical, the weld composition can be balanced with filler metal, decreasing the hot cracking susceptibility of some aluminum alloys. The combination of these two welding processes can also improve the weld bead shape quality (including the elimination of undercut), possibly reduce the porosity and increase the welding speed. This article reviews the recent works about the laser-OMA W hybrid welding of aluminum alloys. After a brief presentation on the interaction mechanisms between a laser beam and an electric arc, the paper depicts the typical welding parameters and experimental methods along with their characteristics.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

"This paper describes an on-going research on developing coupled boundary element and finite element algorithms for the solution of thermal and electrodynamic problems relating to materials processing. The coupled methods are uniquely suitable for field problems involving composite regions, in which detailed information on field distributions within one particular region is of more interest and yet the solution can be obtained only if the effects of other regions are all considered. Problems of this type include heat transfer in multiple regions and also magnetic induction involving an infinite boundary. The hybrid boundary and finite element formulation, algorithm development and the applications are discussed. Two examples are given to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of the coupled algorithm for heat transfer problems. Various treatments of corner discontinuity are discussed. It is found that the double flux treatment is an ideal choice amongst those tested as it is easy to implement and also gives the most accurate solution. 1. INTRODUCTIONElectrodynamic and transport problems occur frequently in materials processing systems. Accurate solution of these problems is of great importance not only for our fundamental understanding of physical principles governing these phenomena in the processing systems but also for optimization of the existing processes as well as development of new processes. For this purpose, many numerical algorithms have been developed. These computational schemes in general can be classified into three categories, that is, the finite element and finite difference schemes and the boundary element scheme. The former two are domain based numerical algorithms while the latter the boundary-based algorithm.The finite element method, which is based on the variational calculus, is a very useful and yet popular engineering numerical method for boundary value problems defined over irregular boundaries. The use of the method requires the discretization of the entire domain. It can be applied to solve both linear and nonlinear problems, but is particularly powerful for nonlinear problems that involve the field variables defined within the computational domain. On the other hand, the boundary element method, with its root in the Green's function method, is very efficient for linear boundary value problems or nonlinear problems that involve field variables only along the boundaries. The primary advantage of the boundary element method lies in the fact that only the boundaries of the computational domain need to be discretized, and hence the dimension of the problem is reduced by one, compared with the finite element method."

Alumina precursor powders can be precipitated from aqueous solutions, using hydrothermal decomposition of urea to deliver base homogeneously to the system. Primary particles agglomerate early in the process, generating a wide size distribution. The presence of a polymeric surfactant such as polyacrylate can suppress or delay agglomeration, reducing particle size and narrowing the size distribution. The stabilization of commercially available a-Alp03 powder with polyacrylate was studied, investigating the effects of polyacrylate molecular weight, ionic strength and temperature. The effect of aluminum concentration, polyacrylate molecular weight and urea concentration on the precipitation of alumina precursors in a sulfate- urea system in the presence of polyacrylate/polyacrylic acid was then studied. The hydrolysis kinetics were followed, and particle sizes were determined. Precipitates were further characterized using energy dispersive spectroscopy. The particle characteristics are discussed in terms of the process conditions.

Chile is the main producer of copper in the world and lately the mining industry has suffered challenges due to the lack of water in the north of the country, along with the new policies of not using fresh water for the industry. This has prompted the use of seawater as an alternative source for mining. Several studies have been driven due to this new scenario, which have shown that seawater can be beneficial, if certain ions are removed from the process. This is the Mg that generates precipitates at high pH, that have been shown to make mining operations difficult. In particular, thickening operations are impaired by the presence of Mg ions, where aggregate formation and sedimentation decreases substantially. Our studies suggest the competence of the precipitates in adhering to the polyacrylamide (HPAM) flocculant and not towards the surface of the quartz minerals. This motivates the present work to use molecular dynamics to study the adsorption of a HPAM molecule on quartz surfaces and the surfaces formed by Mg precipitates. The surfaces are immersed in a saline solution or seawater that includes the HPAM molecule. Results are obtained by measure the adsorption frequency and duration. We obtained that the HPAM molecules are preferably absorbed on the surfaces of magnesium hydroxide. This gives us a good agreement with what is observed experimentally and strengthens the premise of the competition of hydroxide with the flocculant. It is important to produce and utilize highly reactive coke in order to reduce the energy consumption and CO2 emissions through improving shaft efficiency in blast furnace. The present study aimed to investigate the transformation of iron minerals and properties of iron coke (the coke mixed iron ore fines). Along with the increase of iron ore fines, cold strength displayed a slight downtrend and the pore structure wasn’t inferred to be a major factor affected the properties of iron coke. During carbonization, the majority of mixed iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron by CO and H2 and the degree of metallization achieved to approximately 75%. Nevertheless, produced metallic iron was oxidized by pure CO2 during gasification. Iron coke reactivity index (ICRI) was obviously enhanced and the iron coke strength after reaction (ICSR) drastically decreases, which were also significantly influenced by crystal structure of carbon.

At Pietrafitta, between Assisi and Perugia, ENEL (Italian National Electricity Authority) has for some time been managing a power-station operated with lignite, mined from an open mine on the way to exhaustion. A new plant is under construction which is located in the mine that was filled with tailings, mainly clays, sandy silts, lignite and ashes produced by the power-station. The soil profile is shown in Fig. 1: the thickness of the made ground is around 27 m. The foundation of the new power-station is on 320 t piles, 1.20 m diameter, embedded in the cohesive base formation at a depth of 57.5 m. 2,350 piles will be constructed for a total length of 125 km. It is therefore one of the largest pile sites at present in operation in Italy. [ ]

Although the metal silver has been known and prized from very ancient times, it is in the New World that the greatest silver camps have been found. This is shown in the following comparison: [] For the last few years, the World's annual production of silver has averaged about 240 million ounces troy. Of this total, the North American Continent contributes approximately three quarters, Mexico leading with 38 per cent, followed by the United States with 27 per cent, and Canada with nearly 9 per cent.[] Of the largest silver producers in Canada, the Sullivan takes first place. Although primarily famous as a lead and zinc mine, it produced, in 1926, more than 4.5 million ounces of silver. The Premier mine, in northern British Columbia, produced more than 3 million ounces. In Ontario, the largest producers in 1926 were the Nipissing mine, .with 1.9 million ounces, and the Keeley mine, with 1. 7 million ounces. The Mining Corporation produced 1.1 million ounces from mines in the Cobalt district proper, and an equal amount in South Lorrain; while from the Castle-Trethewey mine, in Gowganda, there was an output of slightly less than one million ounces.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the potential availability of silver from 436 mines and deposits in 41 market economy countries (MEC?s) comprising five major economic categories of deposits: predominantly silver deposits and predominantly zinc, lead, copper, and gold deposits. This study evaluated the long-term cost and availability of primary silver production from 53 producing and 13 nonproducing predominantly silver properties in 11 MEC's and estimated the total recoverable silver from 370 properties as a coproduct or byproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold production. This study resulted in estimates of a demonstrated resource of 5.99 billion tr oz of recoverable silver as of January 1984. Of this total, 23.5 pet is in the 66 mines and deposits classified as predominantly silver properties. The largest quantity of recoverable silver, 43.9 pct, lies in the 121 properties classified as predominantly zinc, with 26.5 pct in 120 properties classified as predominantly copper, 4.1 pet in 21 predominantly lead properties, and 2.0 pct in 108 predominantly gold properties. At current silver prices, the economics of silver production favor silver that is a byproduct or coproduct of zinc, lead, copper, or gold, and much of the silver production in the United States from the predominantly silver mines is at an economic disadvantage in comparison with silver production in other countries.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.
