The deformation behavior of single crystals of Nb-Mo alloys has been investigated with particular reference to the influence of composition, orientation, and temperature. Strong solid-solution hardening was observed reaching a maximum at the equiatomic cotrlposition and can be attributed to the difference in atomic size between niobium and molybdenutrz. Changes in the form of stress-strain curve, as shown by a high work-hardening rate and restricted elongation to fracture, were observed at a composition of Nb-85 pct Mo and are attributed to the presence of MozC DreciDitate. Conjugate slip was only extensive in dilute alloy samples; at the 50/50 composition deformation rnainly occurred by primary slip, and the onset of conjugate slip gave rise to failure by cleavage on (100). The variation of yield stress of Nb-50 pet Mo with orientation was consistent with slip on (011)(111) slip systems. The temperature deperndence of the yield stress between -196" and 250°C was similar to that of pure bcc metals, but at a much higher stress level; no evidence for twinning %as found. IN recent years the deformation behavior of various pure metals in groups VA and VIA has received considerable attention, but surprisingly little work has been carried out on binary alloys made by mixing metals from the two groups. Such an investigation would be of interest since single crystals of metals of group VA have been shown to deform characteristically with a multistage deformation curve1"3 while a parabolic type of deformation curve has been reported for most of the group VIA metals.4'5 It has been suggested by Law ley and Gaigher~ that the difficulty encountered in obtaining multistage deformation curves for molybdenum in group VIA was possibly because of the presence of a microprecipitate of MozC which they observed even at carbon contents as low as 11 ppm. Recently a multistage deformation curve has been reported for molybdenum ," although the stages are not so definitive as those for group VA metals. The binary alloys of the particular refractory metals which have been investigated in single-crystal form include Ta-w,' Ta- Mo,' and Nb- Na." While a large amount of hardening was observed for alloys of the Ta-W and Ta-Mo systems, associated with room-temperature brittleness for alloys approaching the equiatomic composition, Ta-Nb remained ductile over the complete composition range with little or no solution hardening. Other systems have been investigated by hardness measurements on polycrystalline material and a discussion of the hardening of these alloys has been presented by ~udman." The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the deformation behavior of Nb-Mo alloys in detail, with particular reference to alloy composition and single-crystal orientation. In this way it was hoped to shed some light upon the restricted ductility of these alloy specimens. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials were obtained in the form of beam-melted niobium rod and sintered molybdenum rod of suitable dimensions. Since niobium and molybdenum form a complete solid-solution series at all temperatures, alloy single crystals were produced by melting the two constituents together in an electron bombardment furnace (EBM). To produce specimens free from segregation a molten zone was passed over the length of each rod six times in alternate directions at a speed of 10 in. per hr. Typical specimens were analyzed for interstitial impurities by gas analysis and for metallic impurities by spectrographic analysis. The results of this analysis are shown in Table I. Many of the tensile specimens were also analyzed (after testing) by scanning the gage length in an electron beam microanalyzer, from which it was found possible to predict the approximate composition of a specimen from the original proportions of each element in the EBM. The tensile specimens were made with a gage length of 0.5 in. and diameter of 0.075 in., using a Servomet Spark machine. By careful machining on the finest range for the final i hr of this technique, surface cracks could be reduced to the level where they were easily removed by electropolishing in a solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. The specimens were strained at a rate of 10 4 sec-' using friction grips designed to prevent accidental straining and maintain a good alignment before straining. The orientations of the individual specimens tested are shown in Fig. 1 and the corresponding compositions listed in Table I1 together with collated experimental data. 2)RESULTS a) General Deformation Behavior. The effect of composition on the room-temperature deformation curves of similarly oriented specimens is shown in Fig. 2. The yield stresses of the pure constituents, while not the lowest reported to date, were at least comparable with existing data. Although the solution hardening was large for alloys at either end of the phase diagram, and comparable with the Ta-W solution-hardening data of Ferris et a1.,8 the low work-hardening rate characteristic of niobium was sustained until a composition of Nb-85 pct MO had been reached. Undergrorlnd combustion operations were initiated in a 60-acre Bartlesville sand "shoe-string" reservoir in Allen Connty, Kans., in 1956. Tests in separate patterns were conducted using various co~nbinations of air and recycle gas to propagate combustion fronts from the injection toward the producing wells. These patterns were made up of 6 injection and 20 prodrrcing wells Gas and liquid prorluctiorz from each pattern was measured on an individual-well basis, and comparisons were made between the three patterns to ascertain the relative effects of injected gas composition on production behavior. Breakthrough of the combustion front at a well was characterized by an increase in water production from the well followed by an increase in bottomhole temperatrrre to approximately 250" F. After burning fronts had broken through at five producing wells, operations were terminated in 1960. From the total project approximately 79,000 bbl of oil were produced during thermal operations at a cumulative produced GOR of 23 Mcf/bbl. No appreciable change in the character of the produced crude was observed. Combustion in the reservoir was maintained with injected gas compositions ranging fronz 6 per cent oxygen in recycle gas to 100 per cent air. lnjectiotz of large quantities of recycle gas resulted in higher producing GOR's from offset wells than were measured from a pattern into ~vhich straight air ~vas injected. The air required to move the combustion front through I acre-ft of reservoir was computed to be 20 MMscf. This valrre was found to be relatively independent of the quantities of recycle gas injected. The recovery efficiency from the swept area was esti~izated to be about 59 per cent. Areas swept were similar in shape to tlzose obtained with a laboratory potentiometric model. Samples of sund taken from behind the burning front by coring indicated almost total oil removal from the sand. Petrographic analysis of the core samples indicated that the sand had been heated to peuk temperature of rlbout 1,200" F. No rignificant difference in peak temperature was forrnd in two areas where compositions of injected gas were quite different. Compression costs for thermal recovery were estimated to be $1,20/bhl of produced oil. INTRODUCTION The use of the "forward combustion" process as an oil recovery method has received a great deal of attention. This method involves ignition of the formation in an injection well, followed by propagation of a combustion front through the reservoir. Combustion is maintained by the injection of an oxygen-containing gas to react with reservoir hydrocarbons. As the flame front progresses through the reservoir, oil and formation water are vaporized, driven forward in the gaseous phase and recondensed in the cooler part of the formation. In turn, the condensed fluids push oil into the producing wellbores. Completed field tests of the process were first reported by Kuhn and Koch,' and by Grant and Szasz.' Results from other tests have since been reported by Walter,3 by Moss, White and McNeil,' and by Gates and Ramey." ach of these tests essentially utilized a single injection well surrounded by four or more producing wells. Sinclair Research, Inc., elected to do field experimental work using a number of test patterns in a single field in order that comparisons between various operating schemes could be made. The site selected and purchased in 1955 for this experimental work was a 60-acre Bartlesville sand reservoir located in Allen County, Kans. Combustion operations were initiated in mid-1956. Between that time and termination of the project in mid-1960, combustion fronts were propagated from injection wells to producers in three separate well patterns, using different mixtures of air and recycle gas. The test was terminated before sweep of the three patterns was complete so that information about the effect of combustion on the swept areas could be obtained by coring. Results from the test in the form of injection and producing well performance have been carefully recorded, and these form the general basis for this paper. DESCRIPTION OF RESERVOIR The reservoir in which the combustion tests were conducted is a Bartlesville sand "shoe-string", typical of a number of small reservoirs in Southeastern Kansas. Average reservoir characteristics are shown in Table 1. Fig. 1 is an isopachous map of the producing sand showing the reservoir to be approximately 400-ft wide and 2,500-ft long. Maximum net productive sand thickness is 21 ft. Fig. 2 shows a typical core analysis obtained by coring with water-base mud. The reservoir has no appreciable dip and is closed on the sides by degradation of sand into shale. The main body of sand is heavily laminated with shale stringers, which are not continuous between wells. Selected samples of hydrided Zr-Hf alloys were rapidly quenched to voom temperature and exrtrnined metallographically, by X-ray diffraction, and through micro hardness studies to confirm high-temperutuve data Confirming experiments sllowed that there were five phases in this Lernary system: 1) hextrgonal with lattice parameters similar to that of the initia1 Zr-Hf alloy but slightly enlarged due to dissolved hydrogen; 2) fee with properties of a brittle, intermediate, hydride compound; 3) fct with c/a crvoltnd 1.07 and which appeared as a neetilelike precipitale; 4) hexagonal, designated ?, with c/a ratio of 2.37; and 5) orthorhombic, designated X, with a = 4.67, b = 4.49, and c = 5.093 and whose tnicro-st?ruct~ival nppetrl-nnce depcncled o/i, heat lvecrt~r~ent. A previous paper' on the Zr-Hf-H system described the thermochemical data obtained with a high-vacuum, high-sensitivity mirrogravimetric apparatus. This data presented a fairly complete picture of the phase relationships at elevated temperatures. However, it could not establish the actual crystal structures, lattice parameters, or metallographic disposition of the hydride phases. The present complementary study utilizes X-ray powder patterns along with light and electron microscopy to characterize completely the five hydrided phases found in Zr-Hf-H alloys quenched to room temperature. Crystallographic features of the zr-Hf,2,4 zr-H,5-7 and Hf-H8 systems have been summarized in Table I. Designations of a, ß, and ? were retained in the Zr-Hf-H system for the phase regions through which the pressure-composition isotherms always sloped. However, it was not firmly agreed that these were single-phase regions.' In fact, the region designated y always contained a cubic as well as a tetragonal phase after quenching to -196°C. MATERIALS Preparation of the high-purity Zr-Hf alloys has been described.' The four zirconium alloys which were hydrided contained 37 wt pct Hf (23 at. pct), 51 wt pct Hf (37 at. pct), 73 wt pct Hf (58 at. pct), and 91 wt pct Hf (82 at. pct), respectively. These were designated B-2, B-4, B-6, and B-8. Photomicrographs of the initial alloys showed the material to be quite clean as would be expected from the precautions exercised in producing them. However, there were a number of annealing twins but no other subgrain structure. In addition to the four original alloys, fifteen hydrided samples were observed at room temperature. Hydrogen compositions are given at the top of Tables I1 to V. APPARATUS The phases present at elevated temperatures were studied by quenching hydrided samples to room temperature by two different methods, both under vacuum: 1) fast cooling of the sample tubes of the microgravimetric apparatus1'9 with flowing air and 2) rapid quenching into liquid nitrogen. The cooling rate for 1) was 750° to 250°C in 30 sec. Since the microbalance chamber was not designed to permit very rapid cooling of a hydride sample, all liquid-nitrogen quenching was done in an auxiliary experiment. The auxiliary quenching apparatus consisted of a small-bore, high-temperature furnace, a sealed SiO2 tube containing the sample, and a dewar quenching flask filled with liquid nitrogen. The hydrided sample, previously quenched in the microgravimetric reaction chamber, was placed in a platinum boat in a vacuum-degassed SiO2 tube. A zirconium wire getter and degassed SiO2 rod, to reduce the internal volume, were also in the tube. After sealing the tube under vacuum the zirconium getter was heated to absorb the last traces of gas. Only the sample was heated at the reaction temperature for the desired length of time, and then the tube dropped through the opposite end of the furnace into the dewar. A quenching rate of 200" to 400° C per sec was estimated. Analyses of samples after the auxiliary experiment also showed practically no increase in oxygen or nitrogen content from heating in the SiO2 tube. All of the samples were examined at room temperature by the X-ray powder method. The majority of the powder patterns were obtained with double nickel-filtered CuKa radiation after 8- and 16-hr exposures in an 11.48-cm-diam camera. Cobalt and chromium radiation were also used to spread out the high d value end of the Pattern. Such patterns readily identified the minor phases. NO oxide or nitride lines were found. THE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois was described by Davidson' in 1944. Since then, improvements as well as expansion of the plant facilities have been made. In order to increase the production of high grade zinc which was needed for war purposes, an expansion program designed to double the slab zinc capacity was started in 1942 and completed in March 1943. This expansion was propagated by a contract between the American Zinc Co. of Ill. and the Defense Plant Corp. The contract included the facilities of the Fairmont City, Ill., property of the American Zinc Co., where a suspension-type roaster with contact acid plant, cadmium distillation furnace, Waelz oxide and densifying plant, and horizontal retort furnaces were installed. The expanded Monsanto, Ill., plant and the additional facilities of' the Fairmont plant were designed to integrate the metallurgical treatment of zinc concentrates for the production of special high grade zinc at Monsanto with the production of acid, cadmium, high grade zinc from furnace skimmings and the Waelz treatment of leach residue at Fairmont. In general, the original flowsheet was not changed, except for the addition of the filtering, drying and reclaiming of leach residue, and the treatment of purification cake for the recovery of copper, cadmium sponge, and zinc. Fig. 1 is a flow diagram of present operations. The original plant facilities, desi-gned for 50 tons daily production of slab zinc, had some units which were more than adequate. Therefore, in expanding the facilities to 100 tons per day, it was not necessary to double all operating components. Table I gives the comparison of the changes made in the unit operating components for the original facilities, 1941, the 1943 expansion, and the 1951 facilities. During the past 11 years a number of improvenients have been made resulting in: 1—an increase in slab production, 2—higher recoveries on the calcine treated, 3—better quality of slab zinc produced, 4—higher current efficiencies, and 5—less man hours Table I. Semi-industrial test on fine products of Meishan dressing plant was carried out with type RP80/25 high pressure roller mill produced by Homburg Corporation of Germany, and the influences of such factors as energy consumption, water containing, throughput and circulating load on rolling effect were investigated. Closed circuit experiment result showed that Meishan iron ore could be suitable for powder grinding with high pressure roller mill, and energy consumption of the operation was declined by 25%~30%, which was favorable for energy-saving, increasing production efficiency and improving grinding effects. According to above experimental results, this paper put forward the technical proposal of application of high pressure roller mill in Meishan, and pointed out some technical problems which needed to be settled urgently in technology disposal.

El presente texto describe la aplicación de los principios de exploración geoquímica en un sector de la faja aurífera Nazca -Ocoña correspondiente a la mina "Las Agripiinas". El objetivo es determinar anomalías de oro en base a un muestreo sistemático de afloramientos y niveles ya en desarrollo y así ubicar nuevas áreas favorables para la realización de labores mineros que conduzcan a aumentar las reservas de la mina. La exploración por oro se realizó en rocas metamórficas esquistosas con vetas de cuarzo-pirita, intrusivos granodioríticos y volcánicos andesíticos caracterizados por procesos de dispersión primaría. La dispersión secundaria se determina en óxidos, producto de la alteración de los ferromagnesianos y sulfuros.

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple metric that can be used to measure and increase ball milling circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target (oversize) particles. This paper describes CSE analysis conducted for a variety of operations with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The achievable CSE for any given ball milling circuit is described, providing the means to determine the extent to which every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for mine planners and engineers to evaluate on a conceptual basis if a shaft or a ramp is most suited for their particular underground access requirements. Mine planners and engineers are often raced with the decision of choosing which method of underground access is best suited for their particular requirement. Underground access can be provided by a shaft, ramp, adit, or slope for either exploration and/or actual production operations. This paper will focus on the construction cost and schedule differences between sinking a shaft and excavating a ramp which are currently the most typical access alternatives used in the western United States. It would be wrong to state that one method is superior to the other in every case. There are many variables to be addressed, and the degree of sensitivity of each of them will eventually dictate which method is the most suited to the particular circumstances. This paper compares the construction cost and schedule or sinking a shaft to excavating a ramp at different depths given different ground and hydrological conditions. This comparison provides mine planners with "rules or thumb" that may be applied to the access selection process.

"INTRODUCTION Limestone (which consists essentially of calcium carbonate) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate) occur widely in the United States. Their presence is of vast economic importance, because they are used much more extensively than any other form of rock. In 1945, limestone (which, broadly, includes dolomite) was quarried in every State except Delaware, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Rhode Island, and also in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Total production (including that used in cement and lime manufacture) exceeded 151,700,000 tons, or 79 percent of the quantity of all kinds of stone sold or used during that year.Important well-known uses of limestone are as concrete aggregate, road material, railroad ballast, for liming the land, for cement manufacture, as riprap for shore protection, harbor work, and spillways at dams, and as building stone.. None of these uses, however, are considered herein. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the industrial and chemical uses that are less widely known and yet are of tremendous importance in a great variety of processing industries. Important examples are dolomite as a refractory furnace lining and limestone as a fluxing agent in blast furnaces, and as a raw material employed in sugar, paper, glass, and alkali manufacture.PRIOR REPORTIn May 1941, the Bureau issued a report 4/ that described these uses in some detail. As new and important developments have taken place during the ensuing years, a revision and representation of the salient features of these uses seem desirable. Asphalt filler and mineral wool uses included in the earlier report are omitted from this paper because they are identified more closely with the highway and building industries, respectively, than with the industrial applications."

Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

"A numerical model has been developed to simulate heat and mass transfer phenomena occurring during a novel magnesium reduction process-the vertical retort technology. The model was based on the control - volume finite difference approach. Simulations were run to determine the effect of various processing parameters on magnesium reduction cycle time. The model predicted temperature distributions, heating curves, recovery ratio of magnesium, and total process times. The predictions were used to optimize the magnesium reduction process including dimensions of the retort, geometries of the reactant compounds, and productivities. The results indicate that the implementation of the optimized processing parameters significantly decreases the reduction time, and consequently increases the production rate as well as lowers the energy consumption.IntroductionMagnesium consumption has been growing considerably in the past decade [1]. Of the total magnesium production, 30% is produced by the thermal reduction (Pidgeon) process, and it is anticipated to be still the main technology for producing magnesium in future [2]. One of the advantages of the Pidgeon process is that it is capable of producing high purity magnesium demanded by both the automotive and aerospace industries. However, the inefficiency of heat and mass transfer taking place in the horizontal Pidgeon reduction process results in low productivity, high energy consumption, labor-intensive operation, large floor space and high capital investment. This limits the production scale of a horizontal Pidgeon reduction process [3].Vertical reduction processTo overcome the shortcomings of the horizontal magnesium reduction process, a novel vertical magnesium reduction process [3] for large-scale production has been developed, in which heat and mass transfer in the retort is enhanced. The new process shortens reduction time, reduces energy consumption and increases productivity. The vertical reduction system is comprised of a vertically-placed retort, a heating furnace and a vacuum system. A section of the vertical retort is illustrated in Figure 1. Since the retort is set vertically, instead of horizontally, the entire procedure of loading the reactants material in the new process is different from the one for the horizontal reduction process."

Laminated ceramics have received widely scientific and commercial attention because their properties, such as mechanical properties and electrical properties, can be tailored by adjusting the structure, thickness and composition of the different layers. For example, ferroelectric Bi4T13O12 (BIT) which has a positive temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TE) can be used to modify the negative of typical microwave dielectric ceramic BaNd2Ti4O12(BMT). However, BaNd2Ti4O12/Bi4Ti3O12/BaNd1Ti4O12 (BNT/BIT/BNT) laminated ceramics could not be prepared by the general method because the optimal sintering temperature of BaNd2Ti4O12 ceramic (around 1350°C was much higher than that of Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic (around /1100°C). in this research, a new method of spark plasma sintering (SPS) combined with post-sintering was successfully proposed to prepare BNT/BIT/BNT laminated divided proposed to prepare ceramics. It was divided into three steps. In first step, the BaNd2Ti4O12 ceramics were prepared by conventional sintering method. In second mop, the calcined and pre-pressed Bi4Ti3O12 powders were sandwiched between BaNd2Ti1O12 ceramic pellets and spark plasma sintered at 900'C for 10min to synthesize BNT/BIT/BNT composite ceramics. In the last step, a post-sintering was employed to reoxidize the partially reduced BNT/BIT/BNT composite ceramics. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe mircoanalysis (EPMA) showed that BNT layer and BIT layer were well bonded and no significant interfacial infiltration between them was observed. "In 1968 J. N. Reding et al. suggested processes for fabricating composites. According to their patent, decompression atmosphere, which occurs during the reaction between magnesium and oxygen and/or nitrogen in the closed system, causes the spontaneous infiltration of melt into narrow spaces such as ceramic preforms. However, they did not report the proof of this phenomenon or the industrial manufacturing method. Therefore, this research measured the pressure change among SiC particles surrounding molten aluminum. As a result, the pressure reduction during the Mg reaction was identified. Moreover, the existence of Mg3N2, which improves the wettability between Al alloy melt and SiC particles on the interface, was observed on the surface of particles. Applying these two phenomena, a new process for the manufacturing of cast discontinuously reinforced aluminum composites (DRA) was developed. This new method is expected to produce DRA without additional pressure.IntroductionWith the increasing demands for light-weight materials in the automotive and aerospace industry in recent years, ceramic particulate reinforced aluminum matrix composites called DRA (Discontinuously Reinforced Aluminum Composite) have been receiving significant attention because of its lightness, superior abrasion resistance, high heat conductivity and low thermal expansion [1-3]. Custom Coals, International has installed and is presently testing a 225 kg/hr. (500 lb/hr.) micronized-magnetite, fine-coal cleaning circuit at PETC's Process Research Facility (PRF). The cost-shared project was awarded as part of the Coal Preparation Program's High Efficiency Preparation Subprogram. The project includes design, construction and testing of a fully-integrated, bench-scale circuit, complete with feed coal classification to remove the minus 30 micron slimes, dense-medium cycloning of the 300 by 30 micron feed coal using three different size micronized-magnetite mediums, and medium recovery circuits using drain and rinse screens and various stages and types of magnetic separators. This paper describes the project circuit and goals, including a description of the current project status and the sources of coal and magnetite which are being tested.

"Introduction Background The Frobisher voyages of 1577 and 1578 were organized by the Cathay Company for the express purpose of finding and mining gold ore. Since publication of the Baffm expedition of Charles Francis Hallill, the location of Kodlunarn or Countess of Warwick Island, the headquarters of Frobisher's third (1578) voyage, and focal point of the largest Arctic voyage of all time, has been known to the world. Through Hall we also know the location of the Countess of Warwick Mine on Kodlunarn Island. However, the exact locations of the other mines are not known. Of the ""ore"" we know little. Pieces of the original ""black stone"", once as large as ""a half-penny loaf' have now disappeared altogether. Specimens collected at random from the repository of shipments in England and from loose rock on Kodlunarn Island were termed, respectively, ""hornblende pyroxenite"" and ""amphibolite"" and from a locale about 200 yards from Kodlunarn as (hornblende) ""pyroxenite""121. However, it is uncertain whether these specimens are representative of Kodlunarn or of the other mines, although Blackadar131 notes that, in the northern trench of Kodlunarn, biotite gneiss contains lenses and bands of amphibolite. The ""gold"" itself is even less well defined. It has long been accepted that gold was virtually absent in Frobisher's ore. The ""gold"" has been termed pyrite, biotite and both biotite and pyrite together. Even t h e word "" marquesset"" , which appears and reappears in contemporary descriptions, is nebulous and is defined as ""a stone participating in the nature of some metal, yet in so small quantity, that the metal cannot be melted from it"" (0.E.D., definition of 1616)."

Welcome to DFI45! our first on-line annual meeting. We cannot deny the severe impacts that the COVID19 pandemic is having in our industry and our lives. We extend our support to all of our members that have been impacted in many different ways. But through the middle of this difficult and challenging times, our beloved annual conference emerges, trying to re-unite our industry and remind us why we love what we do so much. DFI45 was not originally planned to be delivered virtually, but as our world changed, we adapted. Adversity became an opportunity to re-invent our annual conference. Thanks to the vision of our Organizing Committee, we saw the amazing new possibilities and DFI45 is today a reality. Our theme for this year is People + Purpose + Passion. This theme was decided before the COVID 19 pandemic started, but today it is more relevant than ever before. We are a group of very diverse people at DFI. Our organization includes Contractors, Consultants, Suppliers, and Academics just to name a few sub-groups. But we all have a common purpose and try to find common ground. We are all extremely passionate about what we do, and this excitement is really what makes this organization what it is today. This conference celebrates this passion as you can see in our three main Keynote Sessions. On a local scale, we want to go back and remember the contribution of our industry to our beloved National Monuments in Washington D.C. On a national scale, we want to explore and recap the development of Government Guidelines and Specifications that became the world standards. And finally, we want to close the conference with a session celebrating the family legacy and share amazing stories of families with multiple generations working in our industry. Besides our Keynote Lectures, the conference is full of exciting content such as several case histories, experimental research in deep foundations, applications of new technologies, business aspects and risk management considerations for deep foundations, just to list a few. We also have our now traditional events such as the Hal Hunt Lecture, Awards Reception, DFI Educational Trust 5K Fundraiser, etc. For the first time, all this content will be delivered using different virtual formats, including on-demand presentations, plenary sessions, interactive chat rooms, etc. We are excited about these possibilities. To conclude, we need to recognize the people that against all odds made this conference a reality. First our sponsors, they adapted to the most abrupt change never thought before, and they always stayed there with us, providing unconditional support. Without them no conference is possible. Next, our Organizing Committee that re-invented the concept of an annual conference and found new and exciting ways to make this happen! Our Technical Program Committee led by our Technical Program Chairs, Jennifer Nicks and Gregg Piazza, showed us that nothing is impossible. And last, but not least, the amazing DFI staff that make dreams reality. It has been an honor to serve as the Conference Chair for DFI45. The restructuring of mining operations in Valea Jiului coal basin imposed by the transation to the market economy calls for an increased coal production. Under the circumstances, the role of drainage networks grows ever more important. The paper describes an original mathematical model and software developed on its basis, with enables the ventilation engineer to assess the configurations of different systems, as well as to test their reliability and prognose their future performance before conceiving another methane drainage system or changing the existing one. The paper also includes the underlying principles of an optimization program for methane drainage networks, which will enable the detection of the optimal methane drainage system, both from a technical and an economic point of view.

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Bioleaching of marmatite with various mixed cultures of microorganisms was investigated. The experiments were carried out in shaking flasks with iron-free nutrient and the pulp density of 10% wt/vol at the temperature of 30?. The results show that zinc is preferentially leached before iron. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans is 62% in 18 days. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans is nearly the same as that with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans (45% versus 50%). SEM and EDX analysis of the leaching residues indicate that a solid product layer composed of iron sulfide, elemental sulfur and jarosite accumulates in the mineral surface and becomes a barrier to the dissolution of marmatite. The bioleaching of marmatite follows the shrinking core product layer model. When the product layer increases and becomes insoluble, the leaching rate is controlled by the diffusion through the product layer and slows down. When the product layer decreases or becomes a porous layer, the leaching rate is controlled by chemical reaction and enhanced dramatically.

"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. The applications of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) are addressed accordingly."
