INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

Professor Sir John Cadman, K. C. M. G. (1918) D. Se., F. G. S., M. Inst. C. E., was for two years Technical Adviser' of the Chemical Warfare Department and Liaison Officer between British and French Forces. The Cross of Officer of the Legion of Honor was awarded him in 1917 by the President of the French Republic "in recognition of valuable services rendered by him in the cause of the Allies." At the moment, Sir John is Director of the Petroleum Executive and Chairman of the Inter-Allied Petroleum Conference. In 1915, he was Technical Adviser of the Trench Warfare Supply Department and was awarded C.'M. G. in 1916. J. Edwards-Leckie, C. M. G., D. S. 0., went to Valcartier as second in command of the 72d Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, with rank of Major, and later sailed for France as second in command of the unit now known as the, 16th Battalion, the Canadian Scottish. He was promoted to Lieutenat-Colonel on Aug. 14, 1915, and returned to England to take command of the 2d Canadian Reserve Training Brigade at Shornecliffe. On Jan. 2, 1916, he was promoted to Colonel. R. G. Edwards-Leckie, Lieut.-Col. of the 72d Regiment, Seaforth Highlanders of Canada (which unit later became known as the 16th Battalion, The Canadian Scottish, and under that name distinguished itself in France), left Canada for "Over There" on Sept. 14, 1914. He was promoted in France to the rank of Brigadier-General on Aug. 14, 1915, and served until severely wounded in February, 1916. "fElectrical disintegration (ED) by high voltage electrical pulse is a relatively new technique which was demonstrated by Tomsk and Mekhanobr in the 1960’s and has been investigated in detail by Andres in the 1990’s. In the ED, the electrodes should contact to the targeted material and the energy of high voltage pulse is charged directly to the material. It has been reported that the ED is quite efficient to improve liberation of composite materials, because electrical current passes often through the conductive part and/or along the phase boundaries. Theoretically, the energy required in the ED should be lower than in the other mechanical breakage methods, because breakage occurs basically by tensile strength in the ED while in the other mechanical methods it does mainly by compressive strength which is generally ten times or higher than tensile strength.Coal, involving many kinds of mineral matters, is considered to be one of the targets for the ED to apply to. In Japan, national “Hyper-Coal Project” is now running, in which ultra-clean coal (less than 200ppm of ash, 0.5ppm of Na and K, and 2ppm of Ca) is planned to produce by combining advanced coal preparation and liquefaction technologies for the purpose of direct injection of coal combustion gas to turbine. The ED is one of the major techniques to be developed in this project, since mineral matters must be liberated before introducing to the following advanced separation processes. Liberation is important also for the utilization of middling coals generated from usual coal preparation plants. The application of the ED to the middling coals is considered effective for upgrading these coals with higher liberation degree and less energy input."

The paper gives details of the reasons why attention was directed towards the modification of flotation cells. The cell volume and impeller speeds were reduced, and it is estimated that the power consumption for lead and zinc flotation will be reduced by about 2·8 kWh per ton of ore treated, and that substantial savings will be made in maintenance costs. The metallurgical efficien.cy of the operation has been maintained and attention is now being directed towards the improvement of grades of concentrates and recoveries of metals.INTRODUCTIONIt was on 1st August, 1934, that the first Denver No. 21 flotation cells were operated in the treatment plant of The Zinc Corporation Limited, in a pilot Nant which had been installed to determine the economics of all-flotation as against the then existing gravity and flotation practice.The ore being mined at that time came from the lead lode which consists of a granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, manganhedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, manganocalcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. "This work presents a comparative study of the thermo-mechanical and morphological properties of sugarcane bagasse fiber/HDPE composite treated with electron-beam and gamma radiation. The composite samples obtained by extrusion and injection molding processes were irradiated at 50 and 90 kGy using either a 1.5 MeV electron beam accelerator or gamma irradiator EMI-9, at room temperature in presence of air. The irradiated and non-irradiated samples were submitted to mechanical and MPI tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), sol-gel analysis and X-Rays Diffraction (XRD) and the correlation between their properties was discussed. Improvement of the bagasse fiber/HDPE composite properties, using electron-beam or gamma radiation, was found.IntroductionResidues of sugarcane bagasse fiber are widely produced in Latin America and other countries: in Southern Africa, Egypt, South-Eastern Asia, India, China, Australia, Cuba, among other producers, as by-products of the sugar and bioethanol industry. The sugarcane industry in Brazil and Uruguay is well established and expanding with large potential to increase the production of sugarcane bagasse in the next years [1-3]. Although the major portion of the bagasse is currently burnt for energy supply in the sugarcane industry, the disposal of this byproduct is still inefficient and, consequently, it is critical for agricu1ture profitability and environmental protection. Sugarcane bagasse is a lignocellu1ose fiber mainly constituted by around 46 % cellu1ose, containing hemicellu1ose, lignin, fat and waxes, silica and other elements [3, 4]. Studies have reported that sugarcane bagasse can be used to produce thermoplastic polymeric composites with excellent properties for many applications. [5-8]. Based on this survey, the transformation of bagasse into high quality industrial products, such as bagasse-polymer composites, can provide its more effective utilization."

"In an attempt to raise the copper grade of Printed Circuit board (PCB) by removing other components, carbonization treatment was investigated. The crushed PCB without surface-mounted parts was carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere. After screening, the char was classified by size into oversized pieces, undersized pieces and powder. The copper foil and glass fiber pieces were liberated and collected in undersized fraction. The liberation of copper foil from the oversized pieces was also investigated. The copper foil was liberated easily from glass fiber by stamping treatment. Liberation rate of copper foil was high at high carbonized temperature. The experimental results indicated that 90% of oversized char was liberated and the copper foil recovery from PCB carbonized at 1073K was 110kg/t. The copper recovery from char powder by flotation was also investigated. 15% of the copper grade and 80 % of the copper recovery were obtained, whereas the removal rate of silicon was 55%.IntroductionWaste Electrical and Electronic Equipments (WEEEs) should be recycled because they have many kinds of valuable materials and most WEEEs include Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). In Japan, about 30 km2 per year of Printed Circuit board (PCB) has been produced [1], PCBs are normally separated from WEEEs and picked up by hand and sold to non-ferrous metal market because PCBs include high grade of copper and other precious metal such as gold, silver and palladium [2]. However, PCB also has impurities such as silicon, aluminum and calcium which are slag materials in non-ferrous smelting process, and other harmful elements such as lead, bromine and antimony. Low grade PCBs are sold after removal of invaluable parts or sometimes land filled without any treatment"

The growing demand of scrap to supply the electric arc furnace has driven to search for new alternatives of raw material. The DRI produced using self-reducing pellets has become competitive due to the potential use of a wide range of carbonaceous materials such as coal, charcoal, biomass etc. In this context, the rotary kiln process using improved technologies such as post-combustion and self-reducing burden is a promising source of high quality raw materials. This paper presents a mathematical model of the rotary kiln process designed for self-reducing pellets and post-combustion. The model is based on the transport equation of two-phase flow, energy and mass transfer. The solid material is composed of a typical self-reducing pellet. The model considers the solid phase (C, volatiles, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeO, Fe, H2O, SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, P2O5, K2O, Na2O, FeS, CaO and gangue) and the gas phase (N2, O2, CO, CO2, H2, H2O, SO, SO2 and SiO). For each of the above components a conservation equation is solved and the mass and energy transport is accounted. The set of differential equations are coupled by the rate equations describing the kinetics of the several reactions, which take place within the rotary kiln. All the conservation equations are solved based on the finite volume method applied for a three-dimensional cylindrical coordinate system. Simulation results are presented for global parameters such as metallization degree, productivity, gas utilization ratio and calorific value. Inner conditions such as three-dimensional gas and solid temperature patter and compositions are discussed.

The relaxation peaks observed in plastically deformed materials at low temperatures have been reviewed by sack1 and Niblett and wilks. 2 In particular, the dislocation-relaxation in columbium has received considerable study.3-6 The present work deals with the lower-temperature dislocation-relaxation peak (referred to by Chambers and Schultz as the a peak) in columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr. The columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr specimens were machined to 3/8-in.-diam by 7-in.-long rods from bars hot-extruded at 1200°C. The internal friction and resonant frequency of the samples were measured in torsion at kilocycle frequencies at a maximum strain amplitude of -10-6. The interstitial content of both materials was approximately 70 ppm N and 200 ppm 0. The dislocation-re laxation peaks were measured in the hot-extruded state and after successive anneals. Fig. 1 is a compilation of the data. The resonant frequencies for the columbium and Cb-5 pct Zr samples were, respectively, 5.5 and 6.5 kc. Other workers have noted that the dislocation-relaxation peaks in columbium are not characteristic of a single relaxation time. As can be seen in Fig. 1, the zirconium addition further broadens the spectrum of relaxation times. The magnitude of the modulus defect as computed from resonant-frequency data also reflects this extension. The occurrence of the low-temperature a peak at a position 20°K higher in Cb-5 pct Zr as compared to pure columbium, in the hot-swaged state, suggests a decrease in the average dislocation mobility for the alloy. The authors do not feel that these data are sufficient to permit an interpretation in terms of any detailed models.

TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.

It is acknowledged that the analysis of iron ores using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for major and minor elements is best carried out on fusion discs. This method of sample preparation eliminates mineral and particle size effects which can lead to biased results when using pressed powder pellets. However, the fusion disc method is costly as it requires a high capital investment in platinumware, requires experienced operators and uses expensive fluxes. Also, the dilution effect complicates the analysis of trace elements. For many applications, such as exploration and mining control, the method of XRF analysis of iron ores by pressed powder pellet probably provides data of adequate quality. Kumba Iron Ore, an iron ore producer in South Africa, recognises this and carries out most analyses of iron ore by pressed powder pellet and uses the automated fusion method mainly for certification of in-house calibration standards and quality control (QC) samples that are used for validation of pressed powder pellet method purposes. Automated fusion is also used for analysing the composite export shipping samples. All the other exploration, production, despatching and plant operation samples are done by the pressed powder pellet method. Automation of sample preparation procedures should improve the quality of data for pressed powder pellets. To compare the precision of the three methods of sample preparation and XRF analysis, 20 aliquots of a QC standard were prepared and analysed by each procedure/preparation method. The results and statistical data on the most important elements, Fe, K2O and P, are as shown later in Table 2.Clearly the precision is best for the auto prepared fusion discs, as expected, and worst for the manually prepared pressed powder pellets. However, the data generated from the auto prepared pressed powder pellets compare remarkably well against those from the auto prepared fusion discs.

During the past eight years a vigorous drilling campaign resulted in large increases in the reserves of both copper and silver-lead-zinc ores.As a result the Company initiated an increased production programme.Some major capital works have been completed, others are in progress and more are needed to achieve the proposed daily throughput of 14,400 tons. The increased ore potential justified a copper refinery which has been constructed at Townsville. The increased production rate achieved to date, combined with improved techniques and greater mechanization, is assisting the Company to combat the general inflationary trends caused by increased costs for labour and materials.INTRODUCTION"Today we are armed with better weapons in our fight for lowered costs and greater efficiency, but we must not flag in our efforts to improve." Such was the resolution expressed by Mr. K. B. Gross, then General Manager of the Company, in his review lecture delivered to the First Ordinary Meeting of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at Mount Isa on 18th August, 1952. This present review of the period 1952 to 1960 records our efforts to fulfil this resolution. At the th:ne of Mr. Gross's statement,copper production was commencing in earnest. Although the importance of Mount Isa's copper orebodies was well recognized, the major discoveries which led to Mount Isa's emergence as Australia's premier copper mining and smelting operation were not known. It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. Equilibrium constants have been determined for the jeaction C (in steel) + H2O = CO + H2 as a function of carbon content (0.013 to 0.74 ujt pct) and temperature (1200° to 1800°F) by using a flow system in which the water-vapor content of various gas mixtures containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen was systematically controlled. The equilibrium partial-pressure ratio K1 = PcoPH2/PH2O was obtained for two low-carbon steels and four Fe-C binaries from a series of runs made at each temperature. By comparison of Ki with the analogous ratio for the reaction C (graphite) + H2O = CO + H2, the activity of carbon in steel (ac) was comDuted for each temperature and carbon content studied. From these data values of the equilibrium constants for two other carburization-decarburiza-tion reactions of importance were estimated. The chemical compositions of the two steels and four Fe-C binaries used are given in Table I. Specimens of Steel E were cut from a 0.035-in.-thick commercially box-annealed and temper-rolled lot of a low-carbon low-metalloid steel. Steel F was a commercially hot-rolled rimmed steel that was cold-reduced at the Laboratory to a 0.059-in. thickness. Fe-C binaries A, B, C, and D were vacuum-melted and poured, hot-rolled, pickled, and cold-reduced at the Laboratory to furnish specimens 0.035 in. thick. In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. This paper highlights the shortcomings of current SGE prediction models for goaf gas estimation, and evolution of 50 m goaf hole spacing embedded in design process in managing the LW tailgate gas levels.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. "Szaibelyite–suanite type ore is rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. We propose a new method to extract both metallic magnesium and valuable residues rich in boron by reduction using metallic aluminium.Thermodynamic analysis of the reactions between aluminum and MgO, Mg2B2O5, and Mg3B2O6 was carried out. The effects of CaF2 addition, temperature, mass of Al, and pellet formation pressure on the extraction of magnesium were also investigated experimentally.The results indicate that the magnesium oxide phase can be displaced from 2MgO-B2O3 and 3MgO·B2O3 by CaO in the reduction system. The reduction ratio of magnesium oxide was 38% without calcium fluoride addition, increasing to 94% with 5.1% calcium fluoride. The reduction ratio increased with increasing temperature and mass of Al. To obtain a higher reduction ratio, the reduction pellet should be formed under a reasonable pressure.IntroductionBoron and its compounds are widely used in textiles, borosilicate glass, metallurgy, fertilizers, and nuclear shielding. Boron resources are mainly found in Turkey, the USA, Russia, and China. In Liaoning, China, there are abundant szaibelyite–suanite type ores that are rich in magnesium oxide and boron oxide. Szaibelyite and suanite ores are used to produce borax by a carbon dioxide– soda process. Annually, 2 Mt of waste materials containing 3–20% B2O3 and 2–25% MgO are produced during the process. It is necessary to make use of these waste materials containing high concentrations of boron oxide and magnesium oxide to avoid environmental problems as well as for economic reasons (Ozdemir and K1pcak, 2007)"

In December 1956, International Minerals & Chemical Corp. installed a rope-suspended belt haulage system in its Carlsbad, N. M., potash mine to complement the already existing rail transport arrangement. In this article the author describes when and where each system is used, the advantages and disadvantages of both, and future planning and proposed changes in haulage at IMC. The haulage system at the International Minerals & Chemical Corporation (IMC) potash mine near Carlsbad, N. M., reached a turning point in December 1956 with the introduction of rope-suspended belt haulage. In fact, IMC pioneered the use of this type of belt in the potash industry. Since that time belt conveyance has been employed as an extension of the rail system but not as a replacement of the main rail haulage. IMC's potash mine is located in the Permian Basin, approximately 20 miles east of Carlsbad in Eddy County, N. M. The 800, 850 and 900-ft levels have been exploited. From these levels over 60 million tons have been extracted. The two ore minerals are sylvite (KCl) and langbeinite (K2SO4. 2MgSO4). The principal gangue mineral is halite, with minor amounts of polyhalite, kainite and leonite. Langbeinite is mined on the 850-ft level and sylvite on the 900. The 800-ft level, with both langbeinite and sylvite mineralization, is idle. Mining heights vary from 54 in. to over 10 ft. A room and pillar mining system is used. Geologically, mining is done in the Salado salt formation. The U.S. Geological Survey has classified the 900-ft sylvite level as the first ore zone and the 850-ft langbeinite level as the fourth ore zone. IN an important paper on The Critical Ranges of Pure Iron1 presented at the May, 1913, meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, Professor Carpenter reports and illustrates the results obtained by him in determining the critical points of some very pure electrolytic iron sheet about 0.01 in. thick. The iron strip was rolled into the form of a cylinder 1; in. long and fn in. wide, weighing 42 g., the thermo-couple being inserted in a small hole in the center. The points Ac3 and Ar3 were readily detected, as well as the point Art, but the point Act was absent from every heating curve. The author concluded from this occurrence that the conception of A2 as an independent allotropic change must be abandoned. At the October, 1913, meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, Dr. G. K. Burgess and J. J. Crowe read a paper on The Critical Ranges A2 and A3 of Pure Iron2 in which they described some extremely important experiments conducted by them at the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C. They tested Professor Carpenter's electrolytic iron and detected a sharp and well-defined absorption of heat corresponding to the point Act. Professor Carpenter's failure to detect this point is explained by them on the ground that unless the iron be in a single piece entirely surrounding and in contact with the thermo-couple junction, the thermo-couple will integrate the irregular progress of the heat through the sample and the curves will lose their sharpness. In discussing Messrs. Burgess and Crowe's paper, Professor Carpenter accepted this explanation as probably accounting for the absence of Act in his heating curves.
