The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a mineral resource assessment study of the Coromandel region, due for completion in July 2000. A key part of the study is the assembly of a geographic information system (GIS), a computerised tool for layering, analysing and presenting spatial information. The GIS is being assembled with ArcInfo/ArcView software and to date includes layers for a digital terrain model, an aeromagnetic map (open file mining company data), a geological map (from the QMAP project), areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data.

Analytical laboratories require a qualitative or semi-qualitative method of determining major and minor constituents in "unknown" samples to select optimal analytical techniques. This is exceedingly important in precious metal assay laboratories where the precision and accuracy requirements are exacting (routinely within 0.02%, absolute basis). This paper describes the use of an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer with a specially designed software package to select optimal analytical procedures and specify relevant analytical parameters. A wavelength dispersive XRF spectrometer is capable of quick and accurate analyses of properly prepared samples without extensive standardization. When coupled with a specially designed software package, this preliminary assay system is applicable to a wide variety of sample types including gold and silver bullion, karat gold and karat PGM alloys, high silver and high copper metallic samples as well as particulate samples of ores and sweeps. The system relieves the assayer of tedious calculations for silver inquartation and proofing, minimizes human error and standardizes selections over time. Most importantly, the system allows for independent verification of final assay results.

The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Status of ISO 14000 standards. The ISO 14000 are voluntary international standards providing a frame-work that allows a company to integrate an effective environmental-management system (EMS) into its operations. The purpose of an EMS is to provide a systematic procedure to identify the environmental aspects of a company's activities, evaluate any significant impacts and use the information to set objectives and targets toward continuous improvement of the company's environmental compliance and performance. In addition to the specifications for certification, ISO 14000 can be used as a guide to develop an effective environmental-management system or for self-declaration. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation founded in 1947 to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade and communication standards. The organization is now represented in 118 countries, with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) representing the United States. The principal goals of the ISO is "to promote the development of standardization and related ac¬tivities in the world with a view toward facilitating the international exchange of goods and services and to develop cooperation in the sphere of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity." ISO develops standards with input from government and industry. Because the standards are voluntary, there are no legal requirements to pressure countries to adopt them. However, many governments, industries and US agencies are adopting the ISO standards as a requirement for business trans¬actions, thereby, compelling suppliers to adopt ISO standards. These business and market forces, which are likely to be strategic business issues in the 21st century global marketplace, are imposing the need to develop a systematic approach to environmental management. The ISO 14000 series evolved from a United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It includes a broad range of elements: the basic environmental management system, environmental auditing criteria for internal and external auditors, criteria for environmental performance evaluation (EPE), environmental labeling criteria and life-cycle assessment methodologies. The standards comprise two categories: organization evaluation standards and product oriented standards (Table 1). The ISO 14001 specifications contain the requirements for developing an environmental-management system that may be objectively audited for certification. The ISO 14004 standard provides guidance on interpreting the ISO 14000 specifications for the development and implementation of the EMS and for coordination with the management system of the company. On Sept. 1, 1996, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) signed a formal agreement to create a new entity called the National Accreditation Program (NAP). To obtain certification, a company must fulfill the requirements outlined in ISO 14001. It is required that "a third party give written assurance that a company's EMS meets all the requirements of ISO 14001." Preparing for ISO 14000 can include subscribing to voluntary environmental initiatives; learning from ISO 9000 quality-management experiences; and utilizing information from recognized training courses, publications and numerous Internet resources. Once committed to an EMS, the management should provide sufficient resources to achieve continuous environmental-performance improvement, as outlined in an environmental policy. A thorny issue now being debated concerns the potential liabilities of documenting the environmental performance of a company. General impact of the ISO 14000 EMS standards. With increasing stakeholder awareness, costly end-of-pipe pollution-control approaches and the success of ISO 9000 quality-management standards, the ISO 14000 EMS standards are being adopted by companies and governments worldwide. The United States and Canada have well-established programs. In Europe, countries differ but are firmly committed toward environmental-management standards (BS 7750, EMAS and ISO 14000). The Department of Environmental Protec¬tion of the State of Pennsylvania is using ISO 14000 as a vehicle to develop a closer working relationship with industry, and it is anticipated that this policy will eventually lead to fewer environmental site inspections for those companies with ISO 14001 certification. "PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is a large-scale truck and shovel operation mining thermal-coal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The operation produces 15 million tonnes of coal and mines over 120 million bank cubic metres of overburden annually. Approximately 35 percent of the waste rock is classified as potentially acid forming. Acid drainage must therefore be managed to prevent acid formation from spoil dumps and mined-out areas.KPC aims to prevent acid production in dumps by covering potentially acid forming spoils with materials identified as non acid-forming. The covers, built to engineering standards, minimise the flux of oxygen and water to pyritic spoils, thereby controlling the oxidation reaction, and reducing ARD discharge to negligible rates. Cover designs and cover materials vary according to stability, materials availability, equipment availability, and cost effectiveness. A modified field net acid generation (NAG) test procedure has been developed at KPC to identify and segregate overburden geochemical types. This paper discusses the ARD management strategies and operational procedures adopted by KPC to manage potentially acid forming waste rock. The Maine Department of Transportation offered this challenging design-build project for a new, 12-span, bridge over the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. This structure would be built to replace the existing Carlton Bridge connecting the village of Bath, Maine to neighboring Woolwich, Maine. The design build team of Flatiron Structures, Inc., and Figg Engineers, Inc., elected to design and build a segmental concrete bridge. Site conditions dictated that this bridge would be supported primarily on deep foundations. Case Foundation Company joined the project team in the winter of 1997 to install twenty-two, eight foot diameter drilled shafts. The drilled shafts were designed with 8' diameter, permanently cased shaft sections and 7.5' diameter rock sockets. Shaft lengths ranged from 20' long near the river's edge to 100' deep in the middle of the river. Rock socket lengths ranged from 12' to 30' deep. Two Osterberg Cell load tests were conducted on production drilled shafts. Figg Engineers utilized the results of the load tests to "fine-tune" the rock socket design during construction of the drilled shafts. Construction of the drilled shafts proved to be very challenging and called on every member of the design-build team to work together throughout the project. One of the most challenging aspects of this project was in the installation of the 8' diameter permanent casing and drilling of the rock sockets. Early in the project, it became apparent that the top of bedrock was broken and unstable. This condition limited the advancement of the permanent casing and the affect of a "seal" at the top of rock socket. As a result, as the rock socket was advanced, loose material spilled into the hole and stopped progress of the socket. In order to resolve this problem, the design-build team developed a redesigned drilled shaft which included the installation of a steel sleeve to seal off the unstable rock formation. Following installation of the sleeve, the rock socket diameter was reduced to 7' diameter and advanced additional length to achieve required design capacity. All drilled shafts were installed with equipment supported on floating barges. Water access, along with the long shaft lengths and very hard bedrock required the use of cranes and drilling equipment that far exceeded the requirements of typical drilled shaft projects. This paper will discuss the relationship between design, construction, and equipment utilization on this challenging design-build project. [ ]

The application of roof bolting technology to control the stability of roadways in coal mining within weak strata or under high ground pressure has improved progressively. One of several factors that affect the design of rock bolting is the immediate roof characteristics of the roadway. On the competent rocks, the mining conditions may indicate a high level of stability and a low density of bolting patterns may be adequate to control the ground stability. However, at a weak strata, the roadway will be affected by both horizontal and vertical stresses that may generate a high level of deformation in the immediate roof. This sensitivity of the roadway will require a mine plan design which consider the pillar sizes and sequences of extraction as well as a conservative reinforcement to maintain the integrity of the deforming weak roof strata. Rock bolting technology has been used to maintain the stability of roadways in Indonesia and Japan for a few years. In this paper the overview of the application of rock bolting reinforcement in Ombilin Coal Mine, Indonesia and Miike Coal Mine, Japan is given.

Longwall mining is considered to be the most efficient underground coal-mining technique in terms of coal extraction ratio, production rate and safety standards. Due to the increasing demand for higher coal production, the recent trends have been to use wider panels and to maintain a faster face movement. For these reasons, longwall mining can result in unexpected roof falls, excessive face convergence, shield damage and numerous maintenance problems, which can cause sudden interruption of coal production as well as serious safety hazards. Recent work at the University of Alabama has been dedicated to the development of a longwall strata-control and maintenance system that can integrate real-time shield monitoring, data presentation, analysis, forecasting and warning modules. This integrated system has been called LoSCoMS. The main objective of the system is to provide minute-by-minute stability and maintenance information such as the following: high-load, low-setting pressure, leg leakage, etc.; the analysis of various mining and geological parameters to determine past and present roof characteristics; and the forecasting of loading patterns for the following mining cycles, the next periodic weighting, etc. By using this unique system, mine operations personnel are well aware of past, present and future roof-loading patterns at the longwall face and, thus, proper safety measures can be taken ahead of time.

"New Brunswick became a separate province in 1784, shortly after the influx of a large number of Loyalists from the United States. Many of these people settled along the Saint John River, including the area of excellent farmland near the present town of Woodstock. There were indications that some of these early settlers recognized iron formations in the vicinity of Woodstock about 1820, however the nature of the deposits was not known until 1836 when Dr. C. T. Jackson, a geologist commissioned by the State of Maine, investigated the mineral potential of the area. Jackson(1) described the ""ore"" as compact red hematite yielding 44 per cent pure metallic iron, and suggested that sizable tonnages may be present. It was about this time that an extensive limonite deposit was found in north-central Maine, near Mt. Katahdin. Other iron depostis were found in the Nictaux area of Nova Scotia, and a few years later at Londonderry* (Fig. 1). In 1837, Richard Ketchum of Jacksonville, on whose land iron ores had been found, petitioned the provincial government to incorporate a company. After much study, the York and Carleton Mining Company Bill was passed on March 15, 184 7. Several other petitions were passed permitting the company to construct roads, obtain woodland, etc. (2) . The first blast furnace was erected in 1848 on the west bank of the Saint John River near the mouth of Lanes Creek."

Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (1956–1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and, thereby, significantly inhibit acid generation, have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited’s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on “Fix Dmacs” technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.

"A 1/3 scale ""thin-slice"" model of an electric arc furnace was developed so that gas could be injected to simulate foaming gas evolution. The influence of arc jets, oxygen lancing and bottom bubbling was also simulated. Liquid velocities were measured by a white light particle image velocimetry system. Numerical simulations of some of these effects were made using commercial CFD packages. Comparisons with measured results show that considerable care is required to select the appropriate model and to interpret the computational results.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years electric arc furnaces (EAF) have captured a significant share of steel production, partially due to increased productivity through the introduction of advanced technology such as oxygen injection, slag foaming and long-arc operation, process automation and post-combustion. However, systematic analysis of the process and these effects on heat transfer and fluid flow in the furnace is still in its infancy. Most investigationsl1 6l have been restricted to a specific application such as oxygen lancing or bottom stirring. In addition, it is very difficult to make comparisons between these computed results and experimental/industrial results. In this work a 1/3-scale ""thin-slice"" model of Dofasco's 190 ton EAF was built. The fluid flow in the bath due to the arc jets, bottom stirring, oxygen lancing and CO evolution was simulated. The velocity distributions in the bath were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) System. In addition, numerical simulations of bottom stirring and CO evolution were carried out using two commercial CFD packages (Fluent and Phoenics). The objective of this work is to validate the mathematical models so that they can be applied to the full-scale furnaces."

A hetero-f1occulation model is developed to calculate the net force exerted on a paramagnetic nanoparticle that is moving in the proximity of a magnetite particle that is fixed or supported within an open flow and magnetically energized packed bed. Important variables investigated include the size and surface charge of the particles, the magnetic field, the ,flow velocity, the electrolyte concentration and the magnetic susceptibility of ,the nanoparticle. The ?influence: of other naturally occurring forces, such as hydrodynamic and DLVO(Le., van der Waals and electrostatic) forces on the magnetic attractive forces between the magnetite particle and the nanoparticle are also examined. This model reveals the feasibility of using magnetite particles instead, of stainless steel as the energizable element for high gradient magnetic separation.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW)promotes public understanding and education related to the mining industry. Towards this goal, the Foundation has funded several projects from donations and fundraising activities. The MFSW was incorporated in 1993 by combining the Mining Club of the Southwest and the Mining Club of the Southwest Foundation. The Mining Club began in 1971 as a social organization. It provided members of the mining community an opportunity to meet. The club also provided a means for public education about mining. In the early 1990s, the club’s efforts were directed mainly toward educational activities. And in 1992, discussions began concerning incorporation into a non-profit foundation to further the public understanding of mining. In 1983, the American Mining Hall of Fame was inaugurated to honor significant contributors to the industry and profession. The Hall of Fame serves to educate people about prominent persons associated with the mining industry, present and past. The honorees number 75. Plaques commemorate their induction and are on display at the Arizona Historical Society’s Museum in Tucson, AZ. The combined honors ceremony and banquet have remained one of the fund raising activities.

The increasing size of flotation cells as the use of flotation has increased is traced from the first United States application of the process in Montana in 1911 through the following eight decades, using data from the Taggart handbooks (1927) and (1945), from the SME Handbook (1984), and from recent manufacturers' catalogues and other sources for the 1980s and 1990s. With the earliest mechanical cells less than 1 m3 (359) in volume and the largest now available at 200 m3 (7,000ft3), three requirements are necessary: 1) demonstration of advantages in replacing smaller volume by larger volume cells; 2) estimating power requirements, impeller dimensions, and operating rpm by correlation equations; 3) considering effects of using larger cells, in necessarily much shorter rows, on process kinetics. The resulting seven tables that address these problems are presented, and their implications discussed.

Oklahoma is the only; state in the nation that is currently producing iodine. The iodine is extracted from iodine-rich natural brines being pumped from deep wells drilled into Pennsylvanian sandstones in the Anadarko basin of northwestern Oklahoma. Woodward Iodine Corp., started in 1977, was the first plant in the United States built for iodine recovery since the 1930s. At present, three companies are operating four iodine-producing facilities in northwestern Oklahoma. The combined production of these facilities, 1,321,000 kg in 1997, is about 26% of the U.S. annual consumption. Iodine is present in concentrations ranging from less than 100 ppm (parts per million) to as much as 1,560 ppm in brines in various Paleozoic strata in the subsurface of northwestern Oklahoma; these concentrations are exceptionally high, and are well above those of any other known brines in the world. Strata with the highest iodine content in the area (Mississippian limestones) have low permeabilities, and thus would yield only small amounts of brine. On the other hand, the lower Morrow sandstones (Lower Pennsylvanian) have a relatively high permeability and are capable of yielding large quantities of brine that average 300-350 ppm iodine. The Morrow brine reservoir was deposited in shallow-water-marine and intertidal-shelf environments and now is buried 6,000-10,000 ft below the land surface. Production is localized to Morrow channel deposits confined to an Early Pennsylvanian paleovalley that is 1-2 mi wide, is about 70 mi long, and is referred to informally as the "Woodward trench." All three companies are producing iodine-rich brines from Morrow sandstones in three different parts of the Woodward paleovalley, and one of the companies also is extracting iodine from oil-field brines coming from several petroleum reservoirs near Dover, about 80 mi east of Woodward. The basic extraction method employed by Woodward Iodine Corp. was used in Louisiana and California operations in the late 1920s. This method is commonly called the air-stripping process. Lower Morrow brine containing dissolved sodium iodide is pumped to the plant through a series of pipelines, where by-product natural gas is separated and processed. The brine is then acidified and subsequently oxidized with chlorine to convert the iodide to iodine. The iodine is air stripped and reabsorbed with sulfur dioxide and water, converting it to hydriodic acid, or process liquor. The process liquor is then processed, using chlorine once again, to crystallize the iodine as a solid. This is then melted and frozen to form a solid product, which is packaged in 110-lb (50-kg) drums and shipped to end users throughout the world.

To enable the analysis of stability for a mine feasibility study a variety of geotechnical engineering parameters need to be obtained. At the early stage of a project it is usual for those responsible for the study to require a wide spatial distribution of RC holes in order to define a resource at the lowest possible cost. By the time a geotechnical study has commenced drilling priorities have usually switched to improving the definition of a resource, by drilling with diamond coring methods in the central area of the main orebody. The usual timing for geotechnical data collection is therefore after a wide distribution of holes have been drilled but which contain little geotechnical information. Conventional methods employed usually involve estimation methods, including book values and examination of disturbed core, or expensive additional drilling. With downhole geophysical methods we can economically take advantage of existing holes to obtain continuous values for density, defect orientation and ranking, elastic modulus values, unconfined compressive strength estimates and fracture frequency. This paper presents the results of a geophysical study and discusses the advantages and potential pitfalls of the method as compared to conventional methods of data collection.

The coulombimetric reduction method has been used as an evaluation technique for Pb-Ca-Sn anode corrosion in the LIX-SX-EW process. The proposed methodology involves three consecutive steps, i.e., cleaning, oxidation and reduction. They are carried out in the same experimental unit, in solutions containing 180 g/L H2S04 with and without the addition of cobalt. The authors have worked in a wide range of oxidation current densities, from 150 to 500 A/m2 for in a period from 0.5 to 120 hours. It can be concluded from the results that there would be a linear relationship between the applied electrical charge I*T (Coulomb) and the anode corrosion expressed as transformed Pb mass (mg), for solutions with or without the addition of cobalt. The exception is that for the last one the corrosion rate is 5 times faster, which was observed for every layer. From the evaluation of different corrosion layers, one can point out that its composition is mainly in the form of sulphate. In the presence of cobalt, about 67% of Pb would be as sulphate (PbSO4), about 27% as a basic oxide (PbO) and only 6% as oxide PbO2 on the surface. From this result, it appears that great transformations occurred in the metal/sulphate interface. Without the addition of cobalt, the proportion of oxide Pb02 on the surface increased up to 11.5%. According to the previous statement and considering that Pb was found mainly as sulphate, the authors recommend its determination be used as quality selection criterion. Its evaluation should be performed in the acid solutions with 200 ppm cobalt addition at an oxidation current density of 300 A/m2 for a period of 24 hours.
