The Tanco pegmatite is located in the Bird River greenstone belt of south-eastern Manitoba approximately 160 km northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1). The orebody was discovered in 1929 and subsequently attempts were made to exploit it for tin by Jack Nutt Mines Ltd. and later in the middle 1950's by Montgary Oil Ltd., who extensively developed but did not produce from its lithium deposits. In 1966 systematic investigation of the pegmatite as a potential source of tantalum led to the founding of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. (TANCO), and production of tantalum concentrates from the Bernie Lake mine commenced in 1969. Tanco's currently jointly owned by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Cabot Corporation, and the Province of Manitoba.

Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.

Historically, Bingham is a rail pit, starting with steam locomotives in 1906 and converting to electric locomotives in 1923. Ore production was maintained through an effective utilization of available rail equipment. From time to time as it became necessary to deepen the pit and as stripping ratios increased, various studies were made on alternate material haulage systems. Utilization of diesel locomotives, conveyor belts, and trucks have all been subjects of study, however, conversion from rail haulage utilizing electric locomotives could not be justified. Because of the gradual decline in ore grade, a program was approved in 1963 to raise ore production to 108,000 tons per day. This was designed to return copper production to the 1950 level. Attainment of this production level by expansion of the rail system had definite limitations and built-in inflexibility. Track and trolley wire relocation causes shovel down time in excess of that required for normal maintenance. Instability of the dumps and the resulting additional track maintenance increases greatly as the volume of waste material to be handled daily expands.

At a time when water resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, such as the proposed $100 billion North American Water and Power Alliance, which would redistribute water among three nations, including seven provinces of Canada, 35 of the United States, and three States of Mexico, the selection of a single river basin for study may seem to require an apologia. None is offered because of ( 1) the magnitude of the Indus , itself a part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, with Himalayan sources, upon which the thickly populated northern sub-continent of Indo-Pakistan depends for agriculture and hydroelectic power; (2) the extraordinary problems created by dismemberment of the world?s largest irrigation system through legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960; and (3) the herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization in a basin which faces a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canals on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences, due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage.

The ultimate objective of mine design is to determine the development and untilization of mining resources. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and automated mapping are becoming very popular in engineering and in mining. Any computer program which produces a design or model with the interaction of an engineer can be considered computer-aided design (CAD), but' the term CAD is often associated with interactive graphic design and mapping capabilities. Graphics can be effectively used to describe and model two-or-three dimensional mine workings, orebodies, and geologic structures. Interactive computer graphics is applied to mine design with a combination of deposit modeling techniques and the use of AutoCAD for interactive graphics and mapping. The combined system can perform a large part of the calculations and drafting work for geologic and mining design. Using computer calculation and graphics techniques, comparisons of alternatives, can be made quickly.

Are you afraid of the dark? Of course not, at least not since you were about six years old, anyway. But early man was - afraid of the dark, and he had good reason to be. Since he had no illumination other than fire and moonlight, he was at a disadvantage when it came to mixing it up with some of his fellow creatures. Sabre-toothed tigers, for example, could probably see quite well In the dark, and they were very real enemies. Sabre-toothed tigers haven't been seen in mining country for some time now; but it's st111 dark In a mine and, make no mistake about it, there are still enemies in the dark. The enemies are all the things that can injure you if they are not seen. Modern mines can be safe places to work for the trained miner who follows good work practices. But there are mining machines that make sabre- toothed tigers look like pussycats, and if you can't see well enough they can be ten times more dangerous.

INTRODUCTION The preceding chapters have brought us to a point in the mineral appraisal process where the composited sample values can now be used to estimate the grade and tonnage of the total mineral deposit. There are many techniques whereby drill hole composites and/or other sample data are used to assign grade and estimates to the surrounding rock. Matheron and his students have properly called such techniques extension functions. Before embarking upon a detailed discussion of extension functions, it is necessary that we take time to consider the concept of geostatistics as advocated by George Matheron who developed the "Theory of Regionalized Variables," which he published in 1962 (Matheron, 1971). The concept of regionalized variables has important application in the techniques of mineral appraisal. The position or location of a mineral sample within a deposit can be almost as important as its value. Geostatistics, when defined as "the application of the theory of regionalized variables* to the study of mineralized volumes of rock," takes into consideration the position as well as the magnitude of the value of the sample. The principles of geostatistics, as outlined by Matheron, represent a major step forward in the mineral evaluation process, because they provide a sound theoretical and practical basis for quantifying the geological concepts of (1) area of influence of a sample, (2) the continuity or lack of continuity of mineralization within the ore body, and (3) the lateral changes in mineralization according to the trend direction of an ore body and its orthogonal components; or in other words, a measure of the anisotropy of the deposit. Royle (1971) has defined the objects of geostatistic as being: "1. To estimate the most likely value of blocks of ore, or the values of the whole deposit; and 2. to estimate the errors of such estimates. This latter is important as, in addition to providing a check on unwarranted optimism, it shows where more valuation work may be needed." Because of the great importance of these concepts in mineral evaluation, an introduction into the theory of regionalized variables, and the study of a practical approach to its application is outlined here. REGIONALIZED VARIABLES VS. RANDOM VARIABLES Classical statistics, as discussed in earlier chapters, grew out of the study and application of probability theory. Probability is concerned with the outcome of random events and therefore classical statistics is built upon the theory of random variables, i.e., the probability of independent events. The validity of most statistical inferences depends upon sample randomness being assured for unbiased results. Where independent events cannot be assumed the results of statistical inference becomes suspect. On the other hand, geostatistics is concerned with variables that have position in space as well as magnitude, hence the term regionalized variables. Mineral deposits are not the only field to which the theory of regionalized variables is applicable. Many natural phenomena that demonstrate a relationship between change in magnitude and position in space are amenable to application of geostatistical techniques. Contributions made by mining have played a much more significant role in the development of civilization than is generally conceded by historians or recognized by ordinary citizens. In modern society, mined products pervade all industry and the lives of all civilized people. Early man relied largely on stone and ceramics, and eventually metals, to fashion tools and weapons. Civilization was advanced by discoveries such as abundant supplies of high-quality flint in northern France and southern England and firesetting to break rock. Middle Eastern cultures flourished not only because of agriculture and trade, but also because of mineral-rich deposits nearby. The earliest miners date back perhaps to 300,000 BC; their quest was for nonmetallic minerals (chert, flint, obsidian) suitable for utensils and eventually for weapons. Other rocks and minerals (ceramics, clay, salt, meteoric iron) attracted the miners for jewelry, cosmetics, construction materials, food seasoning, and coinage. At first, their excavations were confined to the surface, either pits or placers. But by about 40,000 BC, mine workings had been extended underground as short adits or shafts, and by 8000 BC as elaborate interconnected openings 300 ft (90 m) in depth. This paper and four other papers on the MEQB Regional Copper-Nickel Study, presented today at the 1980 SME-AIME Fall Meeting are based on four years of extensive inter-disciplinary research and impact analysis supported largely by the Legislative Commission on Minnesota Resources. This study produced over 180 technical reports, the results of which are summarized in an Executive Summary available from the Minnesota State Planning Agency, St. Paul, Minnesota. Those wishing to examine the many scientific, engineering, environmental, social or economic issues addressed by the study are encouraged to obtain a copy of the executive summary. The executive summary includes a bibliography of all technical reports produced by the Regional Copper-Nickel Study and describes the five-volume, 26 chapter Regional Copper-Nickel Study Report.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

"Improving the safety of underground openings and optimizing ground support systems requires reliable ground characterization. This includes understanding the joints, discontinuities, and rock strength. Joint information can be obtained from borehole cameras, but measuring in-situ rock strength is very difficult. Use of borehole probes can be an ideal and efficient way to meet this requirement. This paper discusses the development of the Rock Strength Borehole Probe (RSBP) and presents the preliminary laboratory/field test. This device can be an accurate, flexible, quick, non-disruptive, and cost-effective alternative to estimate the rock strength inside boreholes in underground mines and tunnels. In addition, the scratch testing procedure in the laboratory by means of a newly developed miniature linear cutting machine is explained. Based on the results of these tests, two equations are developed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of the sedimentary/metamorphic rocks. These equations, are based on testing 27 different sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks by full-scale scratch tests, including the cutting tests by a miniature disc. The results show a good correlation between the normal force and the compressive strength of sedimentary rock if the depth of the scratch is known. No significant correlation was observed for igneous rocks, due to the impacts of grain size.INTRODUCTIONEstimated rock mass properties are essential input for geomechanical studies and stability analysis for any structure constructed in or with rock. The availability of geological information is the crucial component of rock mass classification. One of the important parameters in evaluating rock mass properties is the intact rock strength. This parameter is usually measured by testing the core samples, obtained from exploration boreholes. These samples are subsequently tested in geomechanics laboratories. The test results offer limited information about the rock at the few boring locations despite all the efforts and costs. In addition, these results may not necessarily be representative of the behavior of the rock in the field as the test cannot provide the insitu condition of the ground."

THE following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which may stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. In as much as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a compressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Al- though these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. "The five papers which follow, under the heading of ""Technology Transfer-Universities to Industry"", were originally presented at the 20th Annual CIM Conference of Metallurgists in Hamilton, Ontario. They are a unique group of papers, unique because each paper is concerned with applied research done wholly or partly in a university environment and then translated into industrial practice.Universities can rightly be regarded as one of our nation's greatest resources-a veritable storehouse of knowledge and expertise. Yet, too often, this resource is overlooked or, at best, sparingly used by Canadian industry. Of course, university-based research cannot supplant industry-based research, nor vice versa; each type of research activity has its proper role in the over-all process of technology development.University-based scientists are best equipped to conceptualize, innovate, determine viability of basic premises and to verify these at the bench or small pilot-plant level. Industry based scientists are best equipped to develop ""bench-scale"" innovations into mature manufacturing practices. Thus, university-based scientists and industry-based scientists do not compete with, but rather complement, each other. Active, relevant university research enhances industrial research provided good communication between the two ""solitudes"" is continually nurtured.Good communication between industry and university is a prime objective of CSIRA/ACRIS (Canadian Steel Industry Research Association /Association Canadienne pour la Recherches dans d'Industrie Siderurgique), The directors of CSIRA/ACRIS foster improved communication by making regular visits to universities, by sponsoring projects and by providing lists to professors of uncharted areas where basic research is needed. More can be done to improve communication between industry and university, and it is the intent of the Association to do more.The five papers sponsored by CSIRA/ACRIS are examples of good communication and healthy cooperation. It is interesting to note when reading these papers that the cooperation arose, in each instance, as a result of different circumstances. However, there is a common thread and it is personal acquaintanceship-the university scientist/professor and the industry investigator/manager knew each other prior to the initiation of the project."

"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

"The stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a netzsch™ lME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic, goethitic, and saprolitic nickel laterites. Tests on the -2,000 µm sample displayed the effects of selective comminution. The -38 µm product of grinding the -2,000/+38 µm feed confirmed the effects of selective grinding and nickel upgrading. Size classification followed by stirred milling is recommended for nickel upgrading. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was also investigated.RÉSUMÉ le broyage par billes de latérites comportant du nickel offre des possibilités d’amélioration de la libération et de la réduction sélective de la taille des minéraux nickélifères tendres dans les latérites. Des essais de broyage en vrac ont été effectués dans un broyeur à billes netzschMD lME4 sur des latérites nickélifères à goethite siliceuse, à goethite et saprolitiques. It will also review the analysis of various case studies for the expansion of the project to its full potential, and discuss the impact of the recent structural change in the copper market on the development of a large low-grade deposit such as Valley.IntroductionIn 1964 Cominco participated, along with a number of other companies and individuals, in the formation of Valley Copper Mines Ltd. This company was formed in order to facilitate exploration on a large number of mineral claims held by these parties in British Columbia's Highland Valley, approximately 400 km northeast of Vancouver (Fig. I). Cominco 's ownership of Valley Copper was gradually increased over the years bot h through shares gained for exploration expenditures and through shares purchased on the open market. By the mid- 1970sCominco' s interest in Valley Copper exceeded 80%.ExplorationExploration from 1964 to 1969 led to the discovery of a massive porphyry copper depo sit now known as the Valley orebody. A claim boundary divided the deposit with 80% of it on Valley Copper claims and 20070 on claims held by Bethlehem Copper which was already mining adjacent copper orebodies. During the period when the Valley ore body was discovered, exploration by other companies resulted in the discovery of the large Lornex and Highrnont deposits nearby. The stage was now set for the Highland Valley to become an important copper-producing area (Fig. 2)."
