Na produção de vários tipos de aço o controle da composição, tamanho e distribuição das inclusões não-metálicas é de fundamental importância, não só para a qualidade dos produtos siderúrgicos, como também para a garantia da continuidade do processo de fabricação do aço. O controle da composição das inclusões é uma questão que pode ser adequadamente analisada com o uso da ferramenta ‘termodinâmica computacional’, proporcionando ao aciarista informações vitais para ajustes no processo. Neste estudo, com base em cálculos termodinâmicos, foram construídos diagramas de fases especiais com a utilização do software FactSage e seus bancos de dados. Especialmente as influências do Al e do Ti sobre a composição das inclusões foram analisadas, levando-se em conta o teor de oxigênio total. Duas metodologias (estática e dinâmica) foram usadas para se compreender o importante fenômeno da reoxidação. Os resultados deste trabalho, além de auxiliar engenheiros aciaristas a compreender este tipo de análise, deverão estimular estudantes desta área da engenharia a se engajar na assim chamada ‘termodinâmica computacional’.

Os aços avançados de alta resistência do tipo dual phase (DP) são aplicados na indústria automobilística, principalmente, em componentes estruturais. Alguns desses aços são revestidos com zinco e suas ligas, visando maior resistência à corrosão. Atualmente, o processo de união de aços mais utilizado em veículos é a soldagem por pontos. O emprego inadequado de parâmetros de soldagem pode provocar trincas por fragilização por metal líquido (LME, do inglês liquid metal embrittlement) em regiões de soldas a pontos de aços de alta resistência revestidos com zinco. O metal líquido, neste caso, consiste em ligas de Zn-Cu provenientes da combinação de cobre dos eletrodos de soldagem com o zinco do revestimento, que penetra em contornos de grãos, reduzindo a sua energia coesiva. Sob solicitação mecânica, tal fragilização pode ocasionar origem às trincas. Neste trabalho foram investigadas as condições de formação de trincas por LME na soldagem de aços DP da classe de 600 MPa de limite de resistência galvanizado por imersão a quente (HDG - GI). Verificou-se, em todas as condições de soldagem avaliadas, a penetração do metal líquido na superfície da solda. A ocorrência de trincas, no entanto, só foi constatada em condições de soldagem que implicaram na geração de tensões. Tais tensões foram intensificadas com refrigeração inadequada, causada por diferentes vazões de água nos eletrodos inferior (1,5 l/min) e superior (7,5 l/min), e/ou soldagem sequencial. Não foram observados efeitos prejudiciais de trincas por LME nas resistências estática (cisalhamento por tração) e dinâmica (fadiga sob cisalhamento).

The major incentives for developing continuous processes for the production of formcoke are to achieve a wider range of coals which can be used, greater operating flexibility enabling the production of various coke qualities, and environmental improvements. The characteristics of a formcoke which must be considered when assessing its performance in the blast furnace are compressive strength, abrasion resistance, volatile matter, reac- tivity, porosity, density, size, shape, ash yield and sulphur content. Lurgi's development work in attempting to pro- duce a formcoke which meets the specified requirements has resulted in most current efforts being concentrated on the Bergbauforschung/Lurgi hot briquetting process. This process blends hot char produced from a non-caking coal with small quantities of caking coal in a special mixer in the plastic range of the caking coal. The material is subsequently briquetted hot, then subjected to a thermal after-treatment to produce a strong abrasion resistant formcoke. A 650 tonne per day plant for British Steel Corporation is now under construction. A study of the equipment requirements and the operating costs indicate that the economics of large scale formcoke plants compare favourably with those of conventional coke-making plants.

IntroductionAny consideration of prospects and possibilities for form coking must commence with the iron and steel industries-their likely future growth pattern on a world and regional basis and the potential direction of future developments in iron and steelmaking technology.From the numerous estimates which have been made of the future consumption of steel, it would appear that a growth rate of 3lllo between now and the year 2000 is likely. Radical changes in steel making technology are unlikely to be commercially adopted on any significant scale during the next twenty years . However, widespread commercialization inter alia of continuous casting and direct reduction, growth of electric furnace steelmaking and a decrease in coke rates will all contribute to a growth rate for metallurgical coke that certainly will be less than that of steel."

This study uses the Q Method to examine how those living in former metal mining landscapes value this heritage and their preferences for the long-term management of mine waste. Such sites are often perceived as derelict or degraded, and of very little value. It is therefore assumed that their reuse, for example for development or recovery of metals, is likely to be beneficial. There are around 5,000 former metal mines in England and Wales, many of which are protected for their ecological, geological or cultural value. The Q Method is particularly suitable for issues where there is no consensus of opinion. We asked 38 residents of six mining areas in England and Wales to ‘sort’ a series of statements based on their resonance with the resident’s perspective; this is the Q sort. The statements covered a range of opinions of the mining legacy, its value and options for its management with a particular focus on the potential for metal recovery from the wastes. Analysis of the Q sorts revealed five perspectives on the mining heritage. All placed a high value on the cultural and ecological value of this heritage, however, they differed in their priorities for long-term management. For example, emphasis was placed on either nature conservation, cultural heritage, water quality or the opportunity for job creation through reworking the mines. Cutting across these themes there were also differing perspectives on the role of experts and local people in shaping the future management of the wastes. This research suggests that the views of local people are nuanced; they value their mining heritage but opinion is split on the most effective way to manage these sites especially where there is an impact on water quality.CITATION:Sinnett, D E and Sardo, A M, 2018. "This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. IN the manufacture of telephone apparatus a number of nonferrous sheet metals are blanked and formed to produce a wide variety of parts, which are generally small in size because of space and weight requirements. Many are given sharp bends in forming, so that they may be assembled into compact units. This study covered sheet metal of the alloys of brass, phosphor bronze and nickel silver that are most extensively used by our company. In general, the sheets range from 0.005 to 0.100 in. in thickness and from 1/4 hard to extra spring temper in hardness. As many parts function as flat springs, and others require the maximum stiffness for structural reasons, a large percentage of the metal is used in the hard and spring tempers. So, because of the necessity for the minimum radius of bend consistent with the maximum in hardness, there has been a need for information as to the forming characteristics of these sheet metals in the various alloys, tempers and thicknesses. The literature yields relatively little regarding such forming characteristics, so that designers of apparatus and tools have been largely dependent upon past experience or tool tryouts for guidance. In presenting tabular data intended as a basis for selecting the temper of the metal and radius of the bend, we recognize the influence of many other factors which are not covered in this study. For example, the angle of the bend and conditions of the metal, such as grain size and presence of impurities, as well as conditions of the fabricating process, such as rate of forming and adjustment of the tools, may all affect the result. In addition, a bumping operation subsequent to forming, which is frequently used to set the bend, increases the strain on the metal. We wish to emphasize the fact that this is not considered a scientific investigation of the formability of materials or an attempt to correlate forming, characteristics with various other properties of the metals, except in so far as such properties are controlled by commercial limits on composition and temper.

Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. Two comprehensive papers have appeared regarding the forms of copper that occur in smelter slags, one by Frank E. Lathe1 and the other by C. G. Maier and G. D. Van Arsdale.2 These authors comment on other published results and draw conclusions from their own investiga-tions. The development of X-ray examination of minerals and improve-ment in high-power microscopic methods make it possible today to get additional evidence by means that were not available to earlier investi-gators. The present work was confined to reverberatory slags obtained from five different plants. Some definite conclusions were reached regarding the forms of copper present in these slags. In most cases these agree with some of the findings of Maier and Van Arsdale but new methods of attack were used in the investigation.

THIS paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calcu-lation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 250 ft. per 1000.

To predict the spontaneous combustion potential of bituminous coals using a simple expression based on an easily acquired coal property. Background Approximately 20% of underground coal mine fires in the United States since 1978 have been attributed to spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion fires in underground mines are most likely to occur in gob area; and are difficult to detect and to extinguish by direct fire fighting methods. Often, sections of the mine or the entire mine must be sealed for long periods, at a great economic loss to the mine operator, mine employees, and the surrounding community. It is conservatively estimated that the cost of scaling a large mine is about $50 million.

"The role of mixed collectors in enhancing the metallurgical performance of sulphide flotation processes was reviewed in 2008, and later published as an integrated theory by Lotter and Bradshaw, 2009. The theory proposed that xanthates, dithiophosphates and dithiocarbamates could be synergistically combined in an optimal formula to deliver improved grade and recovery. The approach uses a five-step structure, viz.1. A mineralogical study of the ore to be treated, identifying and quantifying the economic minerals (with hosting and association) and gangue species present.2. Selection of candidate collectors from this mineralogical information and from the known pulp conditions of that operation (e.g. Eh, pH).3. Design and execution of a factorial experiment to estimate and test the main effects and interactions, and to model the response surface for an optimum formulation [Box et al., 1978].4. Use of a High-Confidence Flotation Test platform in the factorial to reduce overall errors and allow for clearer observations [Lotter, 1995; Lotter and Fragomeni, 2010].5. Statistical design of a plant scale trial to measure and validate the gains [Napier-Munn, 1995; Lotter et al., 2009]. Eland Platinum, which was commissioned in November 2007, appointed a team to apply this theory to formulate an optimized mixed collector suite for use in the operation. The West Pit ore (UG2 - Normal ore) was sampled at site and brought to Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, Canada, for mineralogical and metallurgical testing in 2008. Microprobe and QEMSCAN measurement characterized the type, grain size and textural association of the discrete Platinum Group Minerals (PGM) present. From the mineralogical data, it was clear that a mixture of dithiocarbamate and two xanthates would be a likely reagent suite selection. A factorially designed set of High-Confidence Flotation Tests studying these was performed, concluding that an optimal suite using certain amounts of these collectors was a viable formulation that would advance the grade and recovery performance at Eland above the standard PIBX by approximately 2.13% 4E PGE. The plant trial, which used a form of the replicated block design after Napier-Munn, 1995, and Lotter et al., 2009, exceeded this estimate with an overall PGE recovery gain of 2.48% (absolute basis) and a concentrate grade gain of 26.4 g/t PGE (absolute basis), as well as reducing chrome in concentrate from 2.04 to 1.62% (absolute basis). These gains proved to be statistically significant using the analysis of variance method, and have validated the theory."

"India’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and its low value fishes such as sardines, sciaenids, goat fishes and leiognathids amount to 60%. The fish meal obtained from these resources is mainly used presently as an ingredient in live stock and aquaculture feeds. These fishes offer vast scope in the production of pet foods. Pet foods prepared with leiognathid fish meal (60%), maize flour (10%), wheat flour (5%), vitamin and mineral mixture (5%) and water (20%) and experimented with 50 cats and 50 dogs were found to be ideal. Depending on protein level, feeds are being formulated for experimenting with more number of pet animals. Training programmes are also planned for unemployed people to popularize pet foods for commercial purposes.IntroductionIndia’s present annual marine fish catch is 2.9 million tonnes and low-value fishes sucha s sardines (Sardinella albella, s. gibbosa, S. fimbriata and S. melanura); sciaenids (Otolithus spp. and Jhonius dussumieri); engraulids (Stolephorus indicus); and leiognathids Leiognathus bindus, L. equilus and Gazza achlamys) constitute 60% (Figure 1)[1]. In the, West, walking draglines often offer the least cost method of uncovering coal for surface mines. However, with each of these machines costing millions of dollars, a good deal of analysis can be justified by the potenial savings or, conversely, costs associated with the choice of a machine. This has resulted in the recent development of a number of computerized models for dragline selection and pit design. One of the earliest reported models for this purpose was developed by Dunlap and Jacobs (1). Later, Rumfeldt described the computer approach to sizing stripping draglines given the required production rate and mine site parameters (2). This basic approach is probably still the most widely used with models for more complicated mining methods reported by Stefanko, Tomica, Finch, as well as others (3,4,5). furthermore, detailed simulation models useful in this regard have been developed by McDonnell Douglas and Fluor, Utah (6,7)

Os pós fluxantes têm como base o sistema CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaF2 sendo que, em alguns casos, podem conter também MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Os resíduos de mármore e granito, oriundos dos processos de produção de rochas ornamentais, são passivos ambientais na região sudeste, sobretudo no estado do Espírito Santo. As composições destes resíduos são similares a dos pós fluxantes utilizados nos processos de lingotamento contínuo e portanto serão utilizados neste trabalho para formulação de novos fluxantes. Uma mistura de granito, pó de mármore e adições foi realizada com o objetivo de produzir um fluxante similar aos comerciais encontrados no mercado. O novo fluxante foi caracterizado por difração de Raios X antes e depois de passar pelo teste de susceptibilidade de formação de fases cristalinas ou “teste de Stollberg” modificado. Os resultados mostraram que existe a formação de fases similares às observadas em fluxantes comerciais. Avanços nesta área podem viabilizar economia de matéria-prima e a diminuição do impacto ambiental causado pelo mercado de rochas.

O presente trabalho propõe-se a analisar a influência do amortecimento estrutural inerente de tais materiais submetidos a perturbações estáticas e dinâmicas as quais afetam as características de resposta. A importância deste trabalho insere-se no contexto do controle de vibrações de sistemas de engenharia. Para tanto, é empregada uma técnica de modelagem baseada em elementos finitos. A análise numérica é desenvolvida utilizando a Teoria da Deformação Cisalhante, a qual é implementada em um elemento Serendipity retangular contendo oito nós. O amortecimento é incluído empregando o modelo histerético. As respostas dinâmicas são representadas por funções de resposta em freqüência e autovalores complexos. Simulações numéricas são realizadas visando quantificar os níveis de amortecimento obtidos no tocante às vibrações transversais de placas retangulares e verificar a possibilidade de se aumentar tal amortecimento.

The city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany is located at a main transit road to Tyrol in Austria and suffers of a very heavy traffic load. Therefore, the Kramertunnel as a by-pass tunnel is built to release/mitigate the traffic through the city centre. The 3,600 m long single tube road tunnel is designed with a parallel but smaller emergency tunnel and with cross passages, fitted with single- and doublesided emergency bays, a vent shaft, and an intermediate ceiling to separate fresh air supply from the road traffic. The tunnel, concrete lined along its entire length provided the challenge to find smart formwork solutions for quick set-up, repositioning, setup and pouring. Three particularly specific sections are discussed in this paper.

This paper is concerned with the development of an in situ recovery of boric acid from a deep-seated colemanite deposit in California. The deposit contains 147 million tons of borate ore containing 6.4% boron oxide (B203). It is the largest undeveloped colemanite deposit in the United States and because of its unique occurrence and grade, in situ extraction appears to be the most economic viable process. The paper covers the geological, mineralogical, hydrological, well-field development, and extraction considerations leading to the initial pilot plant and subsequent demonstration plant phases of the project. Market potential aspects and preliminary economics of the project are also covered.

A presentation of this project was given previously at the SHE Annual Meeting, Denver Colorado February 23-27, 1987. The project concerns the development of in situ recovery of borate products from a deep-seated colemanite deposit in California. The deposit contains some 147 million tons of borate ore containing 6.4% boron oxide (B2O3). This paper involves the numerous changes in the process that has taken place since that first presentation. This paper further explains the reasons for these changes which are primarily environmentally based and secondarily capital requirements related.
