"In the sintering process, the behavior and performance of iron ores is extremely complex. Different minerals have different sintering properties. In order to use iron ores rationally and effectively, multilevel fuzzy evaluation method is used to establish the comprehensive evaluation model of iron ores. Because of the relative independent characters of iron ores in sintering process, the characters can be divided into physical and chemical properties, granulation performance, and sintering properties, are divided, and together with iron ores prices as the first level index for judging, which are used as the second level index for judging. Using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to determine the weight of each index, which is used as the second level index. The relative membership matrix is determined by triangular membership function, the comprehensive evaluation model is established.IntroductionIn China, sintering is the main method for iron ores agglomeration. Sinter accounts for more than 80% of the blast furnace. Sinter production in the iron and steel enterprises in China plays an important role[l-2]. As the main raw material of iron ores sintering, the objectivity and integration of iron ores evaluation is essential. The iron ores evaluation methods include of metric ton price evaluation method, iron grade of a single iron ores sintering, acid-base balance method, composition assessment method and other methods which are based on the chemical composition and physical properties of iron ores to measure the quality of iron ores[3]. The high-temperature mineralization is an important process in sintering process, which affects the structure and mineral composition of the sinter, and has a close relationship with the quality of the sinter[ 4]. Therefore, in consideration of the physical and chemical properties, granulation properties, mineralization performance and sintering properties, the iron ores are evaluated by multi-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. The multi-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method makes a comprehensive evaluation, applying fuzzy transform principle and maximum membership degree principle, considering a number of factors related to the things which are evaluated. The method has lower requirements for the amount of data, and which integrates qualitative with quantitative judgment. It has a unique advantage to make up for the deficiencies of traditional evaluation methods. It also can comprehensively evaluate the iron ores in a relatively short period, reduce a lot of experiments, improve efficiency and guide the sinter production[5-6]."

Solid wastes produced in ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems often contain zinc. The zinc level in these solid wastes is generally too high to recycle the wastes for iron through blast furnaces, but too low to economically treat the wastes for zinc through zincrecovery facilities. The behavior, status, and distribution of zinc in the ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems have been analyzed from three aspects: thermodynamics of zinc condensation, oxidation and deposition, correlation of zinc concentration with particle size and density, and aerodynamics of dust particles in the off-gas cleaning systems. Theory and supporting data show that spontaneous separation of zinc from iron-bearing dust occurs in the ironmaking and steelmaking off-gas cleaning systems. Dry off-gas cleaning systems provide the most favorable conditions and environments for zinc to separate from the dust. If highefficiency dry separators were applied and appropriately arranged in the off-gas cleaning systems, zinc would be concentrated, and the majority of the solid wastes could be recycled for iron recovery through blast furnaces.

During electrowinning of nickel chloride, hydrochloric acid was regenerated instead of chlorine in a two membrane cell, by segregating the chloride catholyte with an anion exchange membrane, and the sulphate anolyte with a cation exchange membrane from the middle electrolyte (ampholyte) compartment. Successful operation of such a cell depends on controlling chloride leakage through the cation exchange membrane to the anolyte. Small amounts of chlorine gas could be detected in the oxygen evolved at the anode. In this paper, the chloride. leakage as a function of various types of cation exchange membrane and different composition of the anolyte is reported and discussed. Ag+ was added to the anolyte to eliminate chloride leakage to the anode. The cell voltage, electrode potential and voltage drop over the membrane as a function of current density has also been investigated.

Management of emission control dust from electric? arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking as an RCRA-EPA listed hazardous waste places economic and environmental pressures on the steelmaking industry. Horsehead Resource Development Company, Inc. (HRD) serves the industry by recovering nonferrous metals from the dust in rotary kiln plants in Palmerton, PA and Chicago, IL, and has demonstrated the commercial viability of its patented coal-fired FLAME REACTOR Process. However, because of location and/or regulation, many steelmakers could be more economically served via on-site processing of its dust. Therefore, in 198-7, through a contract with the Gas Research Institute, HRD embarked on a program to develop a gas-fired reactor and test a prototype unit. The development program has successfully proven the environmental, technical and economic performance of the concept. Consistently high zinc, lead and cadmium recovery to an oxide concentrate as well as production of a nonhazardous, delistable slag have routinely been achieved. The gas-fired FLAME REACTOR field experiment results and the economic performance of on-site or smaller regional plants will be highlighted.

"Heap leaching of gold ores has enjoyed wide acceptance in the arid and semi-arid regions of the western U.S., Australia and South America. There are areas, however, where cold weather or excessive precipitation can limit the usefulness of heap leaching. Even in Nevada difficulties can be encountered which call for special operating procedures.The paper discusses the general climatological limitations and some of the techniques used to extend heap leaching into colder conditions. A case history of the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company operation in Colorado examines 'valley-fill"" technology as an ideal cold-climate solution, where topographical conditions permit.AcknowledgementsThe authors gratefully acknowledge the management of Independence Mining Company for their permission to present this paper. Normally, the reasons for this were economic rather than technical: capital and operating costs for milling were simply too high. At first, grade was almost the only criterion, but deposits too small to justify milling were also potential targets for heap leaching.Renewed interest in gold was centered in the western United States and Australia, where exploration for milling-grade deposits had never really died. When heap leaching came along, it was in these areas that the first developments took place. Coincidentally, these same areas were favorable for heap leaching: climates were temperate for most of the year and competing land uses were limited. Even so, in the western United States in particular, winter temperatures were low enough to complicate operations. Precipitation was less a problem, although heavy snowfalls could periodically interfere as well."

"For reducing the dust content in flue gas during copper smelting in the Ausmelt, technologies and mechanism of strengthening the pelletizing of copper concentrate were studied. The results show that adding bentonite, organic binder or composite binder can effectively enhance the strength of green pellet and reduce the rate of shedding powder in drying process, and composite binder works best. When adding 1 % of composite binder, the drop strength of green pellet increased from 1.9 times/P to 4.5 times/P, the rate of damage dropping from 2 m reduced from 50.12% to 13.08% and the rate of shedding powder reduced from 60.28% to 25.13% at drying temperature of 400111. In addition, the mechanism of binder absorbed in the surface of mineral was investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that composite binder absorbed in the surface of copper concentrate was in the form of chemisorptions, which made hydrophilic enhanced, while bentonite absorbed in the surface of copper concentrate was physisorption.IntroductionWith the technologies of copper smelting developing, the equipment of copper smelting steps into a large-scale and efficient level in recent years. As Ausmelt smelting is characterized by being efficient, environmentally-friendly and energy-saving, it is generally recognized by the enterprises of copper smelting [l]. The process of Ausmelt smelting starts with materials mixing, and then pelletizing. From this point onwards, pelletized balls are charged to the top of the furnace, undergoing drying and smelting reaction[2]. Since copper concentrate is fine-grained, directly adding into smelting furnace can make it blown out of the furnace together with the airflow upwards, rendering flue gas high in flue dust, which can cause the loss of concentrate greatly, and make smelting environment poor as well. The concentrate transported into the furnace and smelted after disc balling is conducive to improve the capacity of melting furnace during copper concentrate smelting, reduce the powder shedding rate and improve enterprise benefits."

"Spent lead battery recycling still shows few weak points in the achievement of a 100% recycling of different waste matters and by- products arising from the recycling process. Some of said problems are dealing with aqueous streams outgoing the recycling plant, and more particularly, a) the waste waters discarded from the breaking and separation unit, b) purification of the spent electrolyte drained from waste batteries and upgrade to a quality compatible with full re-use by the batteries’ manufacturers, c) purification of the mother liquors discarded in the sodium sulfate crystallization process so to produce a salt of commercial grade. All of the above listed problems have been satisfactorily overcome applying an electrochemical process that, through different process conditions and parameters, is able to remove the harmful impurities that hinder the successful commercialization of such by products, or, at least, that can avoid heavy and expensive treatment plant and operation.IntroductionAlmost 100% of commercial lead and lead alloys produced by secondary lead plants is recycled to the new lead accumulators manufacture. The other by-products and residues produced through the lead recycling process may be classified into two groups:a) matters reusable in the new accumulators production processb) matters produced as a result of various reagents and additives used in the recycling process, to be sold to different market sectorsQuality and saleability of by-products are significant points for the economics of the secondary lead plant operation, because, if said by-products are not saleable, they are just wastes, so offsetting potential revenues, and, at the same time, adding a heavy burden to operating cost, like disposal cost [1]. When looking at a typical, modern lead scrap batteries recovery cycle, it is quite evident that we are still rather far from dealing with a waste-less technology (fig.1).The group a) includes 3 by-products produced through the breaking process: among those matters the polypropylene only usually reaches a standard quality suitable for sale to lead manufacturing sector or to other sectors as well. The other two by-products, electrolyte and separators, do not still reach, through a viable and effective regeneration process, a quality standard sufficient for their re-use in the lead batteries sector ."

A comparison of microstructures associated with W single-crystal ([001], [011], [111]) rods prior to deformation (as grown), and after quasi-static compression (at a strain rate of ~1/s) by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows several orders of magnitude difference in dislocation density. Dislocation substructures were not significantly different amongst the deformed sample orientations. In contrast, [001] W rods penetrated into steel targets, at impact velocities of ~1.3 km/s, exhibited heavy dislocation densities and dynamic recrystallization as very distinct microstructural regimes accommodating the penetration process. Twinning on {112} also occurred as a precursor to, or remnant of, these microstructures near the projectile head. These results suggest that deformation accommodating the extreme strains and strain rates associated with the penetration of a single-crystal rod into a metal target is not adequately represented by conventional deformation

In 1998, approximately 57,000 tons of titanium metal was consumed in the form of mill products (1). Only about 5% of the 4 million tons of titanium minerals consumed each year is used to produce titanium metal, with the remainder primarily used to produce titanium dioxide pigment. Titanium metal production is primarily based on the direct chlorination of futile to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then reduced to metal using the Kroll magnesium reduction process. The use of titanium is tied to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Aerospace is the largest application for titanium. In this paper, we discuss all aspects of the titanium industry from ore deposits through extraction to present and future applications. The methods of both primary (mining of ore, extraction, and purification) and secondary (forming and machining) operations will be analyzed. The chemical and physical properties of titanium metal will be briefly examined. Present and future applications for titanium will be discussed. Finally, the economics of titanium metal production also are analyzed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various alternative extraction methods.

Since the development of the top-submerged lance (TSL) technology for copper and lead smelting by the cooperation of Mount Isa Mines (MIM), now owned by Glencore, and the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) the core of the ISASMELT™technology has always resided in the lance system. Through continuous innovation and operation of our own smelters, first at MIM, subsequently at Mopani, and also at both the Kazzinc Copper and Kazzinc Lead smelters, Glencore Technology have expanded the core equipment supply to enhance the plant operability. The success of Glencore Technology’s expertise can be directly measured by the success of the Kansanshi Copper Smelter plant, which achieved 100% nameplate capacity within three months of start-up. This paper describes the ISASMELT™ core equipment and how it is applied to smelt sulfide materials. It highlights the strength of the ISASMELT™: continuous innovation to facilitate the versatility and continued increased capacity with every plant implementation.

The flowsheet of the hyd.rametallurgical zinc plant which is in use at Zhuzhou Smelters is described. The principal features of the process are fluid bed roasting, continuous calcine leaching, solution purification, zinc electrolysis, electrolyte cooling, and finally, the melting and casting of zinc forms. The Zhuzhou process for the flotation of silver from the leach residue collected on the Moor filters is described. The technical details of the process are outlined and the operating data are analyzed. The flotation facilities are described in detail and concentrate grades and recoveries are presented. The waelz process is used to concentrate In, Ge and Ga remaining in the leach residue after silver flotation. These elements subsequently are recovered by selective leaching in sulphuric acid, and details of this operation also are presented.

"The Levitation Casting Process is a new continuous casting method that uses an electromagnetic levitation field, instead of a mold, to support and contain a column of solidifying metal. By counteracting gravitational forces and hydrostatic pressure on the metal column, this process eliminates friction and adhesion at the interface between the solidifying metal and the cooled walls of the casting chamber. The process inherently provides high casting speeds, excellent dimensional control and smooth, continuous emergence of solidified product from the top of the casting chamber.Of major importance is that the electromagnetic field produces an intense stirring of the liquid metal both before and during solidification. As a result of this stirring, the cast product has a homogeneous, equiaxed, fine grain structure generally suitable for immediate drawing or other forming operations without the need for hot rolling or other expensive additional processing.This paper reviews the fundamentals of the Levitation Casting Process, results obtained in casting various pure metals and alloys, and the production sized system at Lowell, MA, that uses this process. Following the longest Smelter campaign in BCL?s history it was planned to completely rebuild the flash smelting furnace in 1987. This was the fourth major overhaul and the most extensive so far attempted. Detailed planning took place over several year$ preceding the shutdown and implementation was completed in 54 days. The key to minimising shutdown time was the method designed for installation of the new uptake shaft and reaction shaft. Major repair work was also undertaken in the waste heat boiler and electric furnaces. Both of these activities had an impact on the critical path of the flash smelting furnace overhaul.

A modified Cuprex Metal Extraction Process (CMEP) leach process was used to extract Cu. Ni and Co from a complex sulphide concentrate. The standard leach was modified to a two-stage countercurrent leach which provided emf control of the copper SX feed and minimized iron dissolution. A flowsheet was developed to recover the base metals and silver from the leach solution and gold and platinum group metals from the leach residue which was predominantly elemental sulphur. Techniques required to maintain an iron balance in the system including pressure oxidation and solvent extraction are described.

"Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes with 25% triethyl citrate (TEC) as plasticizer were prepared with varying thickness for CO2 gas separation from water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction products. The AFM analysis of the CA membrane showed that the uniform coating had fewer and smaller pores as the film thickness increased, and corroborated by gas permeability studies. The CO2 permeability has decreased faster than CO permeability with the CA/TEC membrane thickness, and findings support that the CA membrane could be used to entrap CO2. Several CA/TEC membranes were also staked to increase the separation efficiency. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) was used to estimate the nano-porosity (pore size and concentration) changes of CA/TEC films. PALS results show a decrease in pore size with increasing CA-TEC concentration in acetone, while the pore concentration increases. The PALS results are correlated with the CO2/CO permeability variations as the CA-TEC concentration change.IntroductionHydrogen is one of the main energy sources available for the future advancement of clean fuel technologies especially for fuel cells. Generation of hydrogen and CO2 from Water Gas Shift (WGS) reaction mixtures of CO and H2O is of interest to many researchers since it allows a large scale production of hydrogen [1, 2]. Once hydrogen is produced using the WGS reaction, the output products contain mixture of CO, CO2, H2, and water vapor. Metallic membranes have been used as hydrogen separation membranes [3-6]. As H2 is separated from the mixture using the metal membranes, we need to separate CO2, and find ways of sequestration of CO2 to avoid environmental problems by greenhouse gasses. Polymeric Membranes have been used for CO2 separation [7]. Plasticizer can control the micro-structural properties such as pore size and concentration of polymer membranes [8], which influence the size/molecular weight dependent diffusion rates of the gas molecules. We have used cellulose acetate with triethyl citrate as plasticizer to separate CO2 from the WGS reaction products. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is very sensitive and able to identify different kinds of defects and their agglomerates such as vacancies, vacancy loops, and voids [9, 10]. PALS has been successful in determining the free volume in polymers that influence the properties of the polymers [11, 12]. Microscopic properties of the free volume obtained from PALS have been correlated to macroscopic properties [13, 14]. We used PALS to study the nanoporosity (pore size and concentration) and fractional free volume changes of CA/TEC films, and used to understand the variations observed in the CO2/CO permeability as the CA-TEC concentration in the membranes change."

Effect of single addition of a lignin-based biopolymer additive, DP 2782, at various dosages as well as in combination with thiourea on cathode polarization during copper deposition was investigated by performing potentiodynamic and galvanostatic measurements using a potentiostat. The result of electrochemical measurements was compared with the behaviour of cathode deposition with glue and thiourea additives. Surface micro-appearance of the copper deposit after 1 h galvanostatic scan under current density of 330 A/m2 and various additive type and dosage was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination. It was found that the addition of 2.5 mg/l biopolymer gave sufficiently polarizing effect of copper deposition. SEM examination of the cathode surface after galvanostatic scan revealed that the combination of the biopolymer with thiourea (2.5 and 3.5 mg/l) resulted in a compact deposit which is comparable with that resulted from the test with glue and thiourea.

Theoretical studies carried out on shape analysis supply mathematical tools to analyze the influence of grain shapes on ore beneficiation. In the case of statistic images like those encountered in applied mineralogy parametrical and harmonical analysis methods are used. It is important that the shape parameters are adapted to the specific processes involved in ore beneficiation, while remaining easy to manipulate. The inertia parameters are considered in the scope of granulometric and gravimetric processes It appears that they are able to distinguish between the resulting products where very popular shape parameters are not. The measured statistics are analyzed through discriminant analysis procedures in order to estimate the importance of morphological differentiation and the aptitude of shape parameters to account for this.

"The foamed converter charges were up to 3 8 per month in Xstrata Copper Smelter at Mount Isa. The issue of high converter foamover frequency had remained unsolved for many decades in Mount Isa. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been developed to simulate the slag blow and copper blow, in order to understand the mechanism of converter foamover. The model predicts the chemistry and viscosity of slag during slag blow and copper blow. The effects of oxygen potential, charge of dirty reverts, slag carryover, under-blowing, over-blowing, and temperature on the foamover and viscosity of slag in copper blow have been discussed. A theory has been developed to understand the mechanism of converter foamover. The practical solutions have also been developed and implemented in Mount Isa Copper Smelter. Some improvements of the industrial operations have been presented. After a series of improvements, the number of foamed charges per month in the converter operations has been decreased significantly from 35 in Aug 2008 to only one per month in 2009/2010.1. IntroductionThe Copper Smelter in Mount Isa receives the concentrate containing about 25% copper and produces anode copper that contains about 99% copper. There are several stages in the process. The first stage carries out in the ISASMELT™ furnace. The ISASMELT™ process produces a molten copper matte containing about 60% copper. An iron-silica slag and a sulfur dioxidebearing off-gas are the by-products of the process. The slag is taken to the slag dams for cooling before it is recycled through the Mount Isa Copper Concentrator.The matte is sent to Peirce-Smith converters. The converters further remove iron and sulphur to produce blister copper which contains about 97% copper. The anode furnaces remove any remaining sulphur and oxygen to produce anode copper that is about 99. 7% pure. This is cast into anodes and sent to the Xstrata Copper Refinery in Townsville for final refining.In the copper pyrometallurgical industrials, slag foaming is an important phenomena which occurs when the gas bubbles have stability and not rupture. Foaming greatly increases the interfacial area between matte, slag and gas and is essential for the operation of high intensity smelting processes. However, foaming or foamover is undesirable in P-S converter since it can damage the equipment and injure the operators. Figure 1 shows that the whole process of a foamover development in a converter."

The Carlin Trend is one of the most significant gold mining districts in North America. Located in northeastern Nevada, a total of over 17 million ounces of gold have been produced since 1965 at Newmont Gold Company's open-pit and underground operations. Oxidized portions of the sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits at Carlin generally consist of finely disseminated concentrations of sub-micron sized native gold particles hosted in Paleozoic siliciclastic or carbonate rock. Oxide ore is commonly amenable to dump leach or heap leach processing, yielding an average 50 to 70% recovery of total contained gold. Refractory unoxidized ore requires some form of pretreatment oxidation to ensure economic gold recovery. Geologic ore control is typically combined with standard assay and engineering techniques to maintain both grade and metallurgical control ofleach grade ores. Mine geologists provide a vital function through field observation and recording ofmineralogic data during daily, visual blasthole logging. Intricately mixed refractory materials must be separated from oxide ore to ensure highest possible gold recoveries. Geologic information is combined with assay data to create mine polygons in an engineering computer database. Mining selectivity is further enhanced by in-pit ore control geologists who are available to make production decisions based on direct mineralogic observations at active mine faces.

Extraction data for Cu, Zn and Fe were obtained from 4.5" and 10" columns using massive sulfide ore and natural acid mine water. The purpose was to determine if recycling of solution through the column would produce leach liquors of 4 g/l Cu and Zn at extraction rates of 1 g/l per pass at typical flow rates of 0.002 to 0.006 gpm/sq.ft. Test results exceeded expectations. Cu and Zn concentrations of 4 g/l were obtrained within 4 to 6 cycles. Concentrations greater than 6 g/l Cu and 8 g/l Zn were reached within 10 cycles. Concentrations of greater than 40 g/l of Fe and free sulfuric acid were obtained with no decrease in biological activity being observed. No reagents were used.
