ABSTRACT Distinct patterns are identified in the associations, distributions, and levels of concentration of the silica minerals, boehmite, aluminous goethite, and phosphate minerals in the bauxite deposits of Jamaica. These result from syngenetic and diagenetic reactions associated with post-bauxitization tectonic and associated activities. Three basic types of bauxite are identified, viz., Jamaica-1 (< 3.0% boehmite), Jamaica-2 (> 3.0% boehmite and 30-80% of the iron as aluminous goethites), and Jamaica-3 (> 3.0% boehmite and > 90% of the iron as aluminous goethites). The Jamaica-1 type has a mean value of < 2% boehmite as A1203, while this level in the Jamaica-2 type is usually about 3.5%, and > 4% in the Jamaica-3 type. Similar discrete associations were found for the species and concentrations of aluminous goethite and phosphate minerals. The process and geological implications of these are discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

A series of laboratory based push and pull tests were carried out to investigate how surface profile influence the load transfer mechanism of bolt/resin interface. Tests were carried out in both 75 mm and 150 mm long steel sleeves. Three types of bolts were examined, they were bolts most commonly used for strata reinforcements in underground coal mines in Australia. The bolts had near equal core diameter but of different profile configurations. The change in the length of the encapsulation sleeve was examined in light of the small number of profiles encapsulated effectively in short 75 mm long sleeves. The results showed that peak loads and displacements were directly related to the height and the spacing of the bolt surface profiles. Profile spacing appears to have greater influence on load transfer capacity than the profile height.

This Bureau of Mines report describes methane liberation trends from all U.S. coal mines liberating over 100 Mcfd (100,000 cfd) (2.8 Mm3/d). Detailed are results from the latest Bureau survey performed in 1985 and shown are mine and company name, location, coalbed and methane liberation quantity. The report shows that in 1985, there were 180 mines producing more than 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) and the total quantity of methane liberated by these mines was 303,900 Mcfd (8,605 Mm3/d). This data is compared with previous studies performed in 1971 , 1973, 1975, and 1980. From 1971 to 1985, there was a 10% decrease in the number of mines liberating at least 100 Mcfd (2.8 Mm3/d) but there was a dramatic 34% increase of liberations from these mines. The increase seems to be caused by new mines being developed in deeper, gassier coalbeds, particularly in Alabama. Likewise, in comparing the ten highest liberating mines in 1975, 1980, and 1985, an increase in methane liberations each year was experienced. The report classifies mines by three levels of liberations: greater than 100 Mcfd but less than 500 Mcfd (2.8 to 14 Mm3/d); 500 Mcfd to 1 ,000 Mcfd (1 4 to 28 Mm3/d); and greater than 1,000 Mcfd (>28 Mm3/d). It was found that 87% of liberations were from mines producing over 1,000 Mcfd but these accounted for only 38% of all the mines in the study.

The deformations resulting from excavation of very large openings are compared using two-dimensional F.E. continuum analyses and discontinuous physical models (20,000 discrete blocks). Both the joint orientations and the model horizontal stress levels were varied. Some models were dynamically loaded to simulate earthquakes (0.2-0.7 g). Model deformations were recorded using photogrammetry. The changes in deformation when increasing the simulated spans from 20 m to 50 m were of particular interest. High horizontal stress caused surface heave when joint orientations were favourable for arch stability. Joint orientations also determined whether the pillars between parallel openings were in a state of compression or tension. INTRODUCTION The engineering performance of large rock caverns has traditionally been learned from mining and hydro power projects, where the depth below surface is often many times greater than the span of the openings. Deformations measured in the walls and roofs of hydro power caverns generally range from about 5-50 mm, though there is a documented case where a wall moved in 126 mm (1), and another where the arch moved down 147 mm (2). The chief objectives of the present studies of large near-surface openings were threefold: (i) to provide deformation data to compare with monitored data from planned engineering projects involving large span near-surface excavations, e.g. underground sports complexes, civil defense shelters, nuclear power stations,

Factors such as rock cover, rock type and rock quality can exert a dominate influence on the behavior of a concrete tunnel lining. This paper will present and discuss the investigation, evaluation and use of such factors at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Storage Project in the design of the 10.67m (35 foot) diameter concrete tunnel lining. A plane strain, finite element analysis was performed on the concrete/rock system. The finite element model consisted of a concrete lining zone and three (3) rock zones; a highly destressed rock zone, a transitional rock zone and an intact rock zone. Zones were differentiated from one another by varying the modulus for each zone. Results of this study yielded a concrete lining strain from radial expansion which was used in the crack control calculations for the concrete tunnel lining. After the tunnel excavation was performed, plate jacking tests and additional seismic surveys were run on the tunnel walls. This testing served to confirm the rock modulus values used in the preliminary analysis. However, results were observed which indicated that a two zone rock model would more accurately represent in-situ rock conditions than the three-zone rock model used in the preliminary analysis. This revision to the concrete/rock model was made and a final concrete tunnel lining analysis was performed.

The disposal and reintroduction into recycling of residues produced by today&apos;s industrial society is not only a problem of much public debate in the countries concerned but also an increasingly prominent topic in science and research. In the treatment of most types of waste, ecological as well as economic considerations are important factors. In view of this, not only will future expenditures for treatment and processing become more significant but also, on the other hand, the savings and profits resulting from recycling. The situation described above reflects the inherent problems in the treatment of solid residues produced by waste incineration plants. The incineration of municipal waste produced approx. 2.7 - 2.8 million tonnes of solid residues in 1993 in the Federal Republic of Germany, which in part included still considerable amounts of organic and inorganic pollutants that could potentially be released into the environment. The most significant of these in terms of volume is incinerator ash at approx. 2.4 million tonnes. Through the use of innovative processing techniques, attempts are being made to convert the residues into a form that remains environmentally neutral over the longest period of time possible. One such group of techniques includes smelting technologies. After it has undergone specialised treatment, mineral incinerator ash is converted into environmentally neutral and reusable glass (vitrification) since, besides a reduction in the volume of the residues by approx. 90%, the main goal is a complete immobilisation and destruction of inorganic and organic pollutants respectively. These glasses, after they have been reshaped, are resold as commercial products such as damming or form glass.

One of the major problems with deep Polish hard coal mines are deformations of close-to-wall galleries since they are necessary and must he kept open for emergency situations and are largely responsible for work disturbances. In order to ensure safe and effective working operations, it is necessary to often rebuild galleries which, apart from the inevitable stoppage of operations, is greatly disadvantageous for the operation of a mine. The largest problems with maintaining the galleries open occur in Lower Silesian Coal Field mines where sometimes it is necessary to reconstruct the galleries several times [(Fig. 1)]. In light of what has been said above, the aim of this article is to present the reader with methods and ways of determining deformations occurring in close-to-wall galleries. Squeezing or convergence of headings is only a portion of the entire process of ground movement caused by ground disturbance due to workings. The term "squeezing of headings" is to be understood as a shortening of the distance between a point set on the roof of a heading and the corresponding one on the floor. It is very important to know the rules governing the process of squeezing in a particular mining system since it affords possibilities to define changes of the process and its parameters at any moment for a given system. This is of utmost importance because convergence of a heading is one of the most significant manifestations of ground pressure which has already been proved by studies performed by Everling (1). On the basis of those studies it has been observed that there exists an almost linear relation between the rate of convergence and loading [(Fig. 2)]. This, in turn, means that the deformations of the already exploited portion of heading are proportional to the pressure changes.

The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

The application of computers for control purposes in hydrometallurgical processes is not as well-established as in mineral processing plants. This is not only due to the comparatively new development of large-scale application of hydrometallurgy and the relatively small number of operating plants, but also due to some of the basic dynamic characteristics of hydro- metallurgical processes., Basically there is little difference in the development and application of digital control techniques in hydrometallurgical plants from those techniques widely in use throughout the chemical process industry and in nonslurry applications; particularly for those cases involving liquid streams only, the primary sensing elements are essentially the same. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis is a well-established method for determination of metal content in the process streams, and standard equipment is used for the measurement and control of pH, flow, density, temperature, pressure, and other variables. Nevertheless, the high proportion of corrosive slurry streams at elevated temperature and pressure poses a challenge to the instrument engineer concerned with developing long-life, reliable instrumentation. One major difference and potential problem area in developing control systems for hydro- metallurgical processes is related to the very long time constants which are common in the larger plant. In these circumstances, it is important to define the overall control objectives very carefully and be prepared to allow for considerable drift in intermediate variables. In larger projects with many control loops the general advantage of lower costs compared to conventional analog instrumentation can be confidently expected. Also in most cases, the process analysis necessary to design and specify a comprehensive computer control system and the increased operator involvement in implementing digital control systems yield additional benefits due to the increased understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the process.

A ventilation analytical system adapting nodal pressure method using skyline modified Choleski&apos;s decomposition scheme for network-flow analysis and a new practical system to estimate various thermal air conditions has been developed. The quasi-linear equations for solving steady-state network airflow have been described using the connective function in general forms. The skyline modified decomposition scheme has an advantage on rapid convergence and the sake of computer memory space com- pared with other schemes. The key part of the analysis for climatic conditions through network airways is how to estimate the temperature of the airway rock-surface with partly or full wet condition. A practical and simple solution without any iterative calculations for its estimation has been proposed. This new solution is applicable to practical ranges of airflow temperature, humidity, rock thermal properties and wetness. The present analytical sys- tem have been successfully applied to a ventilation simulator named "M1VENA"developed by authors.

In flotation processes the structure of the froth phase contains a wealth of information regarding the behaviour of the plant. Various structural features of the froth phase provide an indication of the froth viscosity, froth stability, mineral content, bubble size, etc., which can all in turn be related to the performance of the plant. In this paper the application of machine learning techniques to exploit information from digital images of the froth phase of industrial flotation plants is discussed. This includes both connectionist techniques to identify control decisions necessary to maintain optimal operation of the plant, as well as symbolic methods, such as induction techniques. Both approaches are used to classify froth structures based on statistical features derived from digitized images of the froth surfaces. It was found that backpropagation algorithms perform significantly better than either non-incremental or incremental induction. Backpropagation algorithms requires significant user input in order to optimally train the neural network as opposed to induction, which requires little user input. In contrast to back propagation, decision tree induction produces easily understandable decision trees which can be incorporated into a rule base or an expert system. Finally, incremental induction provides a simple means to smoothly and continuously adapt induced rules to follow changing process conditions.

Native sulfur occurs with barite, celestite, and bioepigenetic calcite in the Culberson, Pokorny , and Leonard Minerals deposits, Delaware basin. The sulfur in these deposits, in "castile" masses, and in deposits of the Fort S tockton district have 6 34s values between +9 and -15. Native sulfur in the caves of the Guadalupe Mountains is somewhat lighter [(634s = -15 to -25)]. Barite in the Culberson, Leonard Minerals, and Comanche Creek sulfur deposits have 63% values of +35 to +73; celestite in the Culberson and Leonard Minerals occurrences have values of +38 and +36, respectively, and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.707808 and 0.708138, respectively. Barite associated with sulfide, deposits, Guadalupe Mountains, have [634s] values of +41 to +62. Barite at Seven aeart Gap, Apache Mountains, is somewhat less enriched in heavy sulfur [(634s = +14 to +37)].

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there

Arizona&apos;s geologic history is complex, resulting in a diversity of rock types and earth materials, including those of commercial interest. Regional variations in geologic history gave rise to three geologic provinces and an inequitable distribution of both metallic and nonmetallic mineral wealth. The Colorado Plateau is largely composed of flat-lying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and late Cenozoic volcanic fields and sedimentary deposits. Associated resources include gypsum, halite, sylvite, clays, specialty sand, flagstone, volcanic products, and aggregate. The adjacent Transition Zone features a large expanse of Proterozoic rocks, economically important Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks, and Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary materials. Nonmetallic resources in this province include facing and dimension stone, aggregate, decomposed granite, chrysotile asbestos, gypsum, clay, barite, fluorspar, zeolites, and limestone used for lime, cement, and railroad ballast. The Basin and Range Province has the most complex geologic history and, therefore, the most diverse assemblage of industrial mineral occurrences. These include halite, gypsum, clay, aggregate, decomposed granite, diatomite, zeolites, perlite, pumice, kyanite, limestone, marble, stone, and others. In addition, young stream deposits yield vast quantities of sand and gravel, Arizona&apos;s most economically important nonmetallic mineral commodity.

The increasing application of roadheading machines in the coal industry has prompted the development of an appropriate selection methodology for such machine applications in specific locales. Accurate geological sections and comprehensive rock testing are required for all machine tunneling. Using suitable geotechnical parameters and index tests, sensitive both to excavability and standability of the strata, a classification scheme has evolved to help evaluate the rock mass vis-a-vis application of a given weight-class of roadheading machine. The classification parameters include point load index, brittleness, abrasiveness, average crack density, and ground water, which with assigned numerical ratings, lead to a quantitative global rating of the rock mass. For each rock mass class, the selection of an appropriate roadheading machine is recommended. The paper illustrates the application of the rock mass rating system and also describes simple index tests for evaluating the classification parameters for brittleness and abrasiveness. INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. The nonferrous industry has for many years maintained monitoring stations in agricultural areas in the vicinity of smelters to collect data concerning impact of smelter emission on agricultural crop production (Thomas and Cross, 1928). However, in 1967, the United States Congress passed the Clean Air Act which was amended in 1970 (Marchant, et al., 1977). The interpretation of this act by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made it necessary for the industry to install extensive real-time ambient sulfur dioxide (SO,) monitoring systems. This was only the tip of the iceberg. Since that time as a result of additional laws and agency directives, it is now necessary to monitor concentrations of a number of substances -in both air and water. And unless there is a major change in government thinking, this trend will continue during the decade of the eighties. It is difficult to estimate the full impact of these laws. Nevertheless, the impact is large and affects every person in the United States today (Anon., 1972; Rockefeller, 1971; Nelson, Yeager, and Guptill, 1973; and Anon., 1975). It prohibits the burning of trash and paper in most areas of the country. It increases the cost of transportation and the price of motor vehicles. It increases the, cost of nearly everything that is manufactured. In industries which compete in the international market, it reduces their competitive position. In some industries the environmental impact is felt on costs of goods sold in the vicinity of 25% of the total production costs. The major portion of these costs is not due to the monitoring systems but instead is due to the increased cost of production facilities, equipment, and raw materials in industries that are required to comply with environmental regulations.

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Fig. 2 depicts the five steps required to complete the move of chock and spill plate using a miner that takes a 3.3-m (10-ft,
