It appears that the tunneling trade is merging into its own renaissance for the decade of the 1970s', and most likely on past the year 2001. Federal interest in underground excavation, and more specifically, rapid excavation expertise has been on the upswing since the latter part of the 1960's, mainly due to the pressing national needs for more raw materials based on the rise for material goods and the projective gloom of possible power shortages. On the pure tunneling side the national needs encompass, in the mainstream of priorities, rapid transportation and water supply excavation as the two top contenders. For instance, the estimates for tunnel mileage for the period 1968-1975 are:(1) Subways---85 miles Urban Highways--- 123 miles Intercity Highways---210 miles Water Supply Routes---528 miles at a total of 946 miles of tunnels. The estimated cumulative underground excavation demand in dollar amounts for the period 1970-1989 are:(1) Construction Oriented Demand--- $35 billions Mining Oriented Demand---$34 billions (which includes the coal-oriented demand on the order of 26 billions.

A great deal of effort has been put forth in recent years to arrive at accurate projections of the demands for tunnels in this decade. In reviewing the statistics presented by various study groups, it appears that during the decade from 1960-69, there were some 1,335 miles of rock and soft ground construction tunnels excavated throughout the world. These statistics indicate 645 miles of rock tunnel and 689 miles of soft ground tunnel were excavated during the last decade. This is expected to increase to 3,000 miles in the 1970's according to projections made by various authorities in the field of construction tunneling. I point out the above statistics to emphasize two main points: (1) The demands for tunneling in this decade alone are staggering. (2) There is a fairly even distribution in the amount of rock tunneling and soft ground tunneling being excavated. Unfortunately, available statistics do not answer many important questions about tunneling which are of great importance to the contractor and to boring machine designers. For example, how many of the projects completed in the past decade involved both soft ground and rock tunneling? How many projects involved tunneling in conditions where both rock and soft ground were contacted at the same face. While the answers to these questions remain unanswered, I am sure most of you can think of numerous examples of projects where mixed face conditions are prevalent. Many of you are probably familiar with the Austin Crosstown Interceptor which was bid last month in Austin, Texas. Here is a project involving 57,000 feet of tunnel where limestones and clay shales are expected to be traversed. Another project, the Tonner Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2, near Los Angeles, involve some 22,000 feet of tunnel where mixed soil and rock conditions are expected. Modeling and simulation are two major tools available to a mineral process engineer for a consistent and systematic process analysis. The application of these tools to the analysis of specific mineral processing unit operations is well documented in the literature; nevertheless, they are used only to a limited extent in the industry. This is because the fundamental principles of modeling and simulation in the context of mineral processing context are not available. This paper represents the first in a series of papers planned to meet this need. General principles of process modeling and a unified mineral process model development methodology are presented. A simple example of model development using the flotation unit operation is given. A discussion of the practical significance, challenges and opportunities associated with mineral process modeling is included.

As conveyor systems continue to improve in reliability due to improved design, installation, maintenance, and operation, one of the more common modes of failure is the rubber carry cover being abraded away to the tension member. Various types of abrasion are discussed as well as current laboratory methods for measuring wear. New lab methods to mimic types of abrasion in service are presented and data from current and improved rubber covers will be presented. Actual wear performance of current and new cover compounds in multiple applications (coal, limestone, granite) will be compared to the new lab test methods and cost benefits shown.

Determination of the state of an underground fire plays an important role in fire fighting, rescue and reopening operations. This is normally achieved by the analysis and interpretation of fire gases taken from the fire zone. However, drawing conclusions from gas analysis is not an easy task and needs specialist skills, expertise and experience that are usually beyond the knowledge of the officials in a mine. The complexities of a mine fire and the uncertainties of available information often make effective fire fighting decisions difficult if not impossible. This paper describes a knowledge based expert system that can aid in the diagnosis of sealed coal mine fires. Using a commercially available shell, the expert system has been designed to accommodate a series of diagnostic rules replicating the reasoning logic that would be used by human experts. The system allows the diagnosis of explosibility of the fire zone and trends of various fire ratios to be easily visualised for decision making. By continuously analysing the incoming information, the system is able to provide a rapid assessment of the situation of a sealed mine fire prevailing under specific mining and geological conditions. In addition, short term trends in fire behaviour can be predicted and possible fire control actions recommended. An example is given and shows how this system can be used as an analytical tool in various ways to assist the combating of coal mine fires. Further development of the system is discussed.

Sampling of respirable dust and analyses of samples have been partially completed for a longwall panel. Physical and compositional properties which have been characterized include: 1. Respirable mass concentration, 2. Mineral composition, 3. Particle size distribution by mineral, 4. Particle shape distribution by mineral, 5. Particle angularity distribution by mineral, and 6. Respirable size distribution. Analytical techniques used in the characterization of samples are described, and results are reported with emphasis placed on relationships between the various characteristics and worker locations. Details of existing mining conditions, equipment arrangements, dust control methods and operating system parameters are presented.

Anyone who scans the modern literature will realize that concepts of leadership have changed during the past few years. And like change in so many areas of our culture, change has been rapid in the perception of leadership. Many traditional leadership traits are still highly regarded and many of the longstanding personal qualities that improve leadership abilities continue to be effective. In the past, though, leaders could rely on dominance, intimidation and fear to accomplish their goals through the actions of others. In contrast, effective leaders today build relationships, provide vision and guidance, and strive for communication, cooperation, trust and employee satisfaction. Earnest leadership involves moral issues like honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy and respect. Modern leaders guide, facilitate and coach, rather than command and direct. But how well equipped are managers in the mining industry to meet the leadership challenges that lie ahead? More importantly, is he or she becoming a better leader? This article outlines steps to becoming a more effective leader. Management consultants stress that the changes that lie ahead will demand swift organizational adjustments and managers who are equipped to lead during times of change (Boyett and Conn, 1991; Hesselbein et al., 1996; White et al., 1996 and Kotter, 1997). Becoming a better leader begins with self-assessment and a commitment to unify all who depend on one's leadership abilities. Simply defined, leadership is leading others. Contrary to common practice, leadership is not about advancing one's own career but about bringing out the best in others. The beauty of modern leadership, however, is that the path of serving others creates synergies. They benefit everyone, including the leader, those the leader manages, upper management and company shareholders.

This report presents equations derived from experimental testing to convert borehole pressure cell data from vertical and horizontal cells to the biaxial ground stress changes. While hydraulic pressure cells in boreholes have been in extensive use since 1957, methods of data reduction have been slow to develop. The methods of Sellers (1970) and Bauer et al. (1985), respectively, indicate a linear relationship between cell pressure change and the rock stress change. Lu presented a theory for creep behavior (Babcock et al., 1982). In the present work, in laboratory testing, the logarithm of the cell pressure was related to the stress change in seven elastic materials for a range of Young's moduli of 3.45 to 85.5 GPa (0.5 to 12.4 x 106 psi). The gage response depends upon the setting pressure of the gage, the gage pressure at any time, the rock properties, and the cross-sensitivity of the gage to transverse loading. The setting pressure of the cell should be proportional to the Young's modulus of the rock, the absolute stress can be determined by overcoring in strong rock, and the in situ Poisson's ratio can be estimated in some cases from the cell responses.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines has been investigating the application of thiosulfate to recover gold directly from low grade refractory carbonaceous ores for the past four years. Statistical experimental methods were used to determine the effects of various leaching parameters on both gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption. Seven variables were investigated, including thiosulfate, copper, ammonia, sulfite, and sulfate concentrations, leaching time, and leaching atmosphere. This information was used in face-centered cubic (FCC) surface response experiments to define the optimum leaching conditions for a low grade ore. Two models were generated from the data to predict gold extraction and thiosulfate consumption as a function of the leaching parameters. The models predicted a gold extraction of 67 pct and reagent consumption of 2 kg [S2032/mt ore at 0.25 M S2032-, 0.0014 M Cu2+, 0.27 M NH,OH, 0.00625 M SO;-,] and leaching for 16 h. Actual tests resulted in 62 pct gold extraction with 0.93 kg S2032- consumed/mt ore. Subsequent column leaching tests have further demonstrated the viability of applying this technology to recover gold from carbonaceous ores without first pretreating the material. Gold extractions in the column tests ranged from 69 to 78 pct with thiosulfate consumption ranging from 0.4 to 5.4 kg/mt ore. These results compare to <5 pct gold extraction using standard cyanide leaching conditions.

Reported are weight, particle size, gross chemistry and magnetism measurements for lithic, mineral and fused soil components separated from five lunar soils using dry, open-gradient, magnetic separation. Pure diamagnetic anorthite, a feedstock for the electrochemical separation of oxygen and metals, has been separated from anorthistic highland soils. In addition, paramagnetic ilmenite has been separated from high-titanium, basaltic mare soils. Ilmenite, a feedstock for oxygen preparation by hydrogen reduction, may also serve as a source of He3 for use in fusion power generation. Agglutinates (vesicular, glassy components containing metallic iron) have been separated from all of the soils. Iron and refractories can be used for space construction. Metallic iron is easily detected in lunar soils by magnetic susceptibility measurements. Based on the exploratory laboratory results, conceptualizations of innovative magnets for processing lunar soils are presented.

A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.&apos;s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. Georgia Power Company&apos;s Rocky Mountain Project, located approximately ten miles northwest of Rome, Georgia, in the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province, is a pumped-storage facility rated at approximately 800 megawatts of peaking energy. Geological field explorations and borings enabled the division of the rocks along the tunnel and shaft alignment into distinct lithologic units and defined the ground--water regime. Field explorations included a detailed analysis of the rock mass discontinuities at available rock unit exposures. Testing of rock strengths was performed in several phases in both the field and the laboratory. The field testing consisted of point-load testing, geophysical testing, in situ load testing, and hydro-fracture testing. Laboratory testing determined the Brazilian split-tensile strength, the unconfined compressive strength, the triaxial compressive strength, the joint-direct shear strength, and the pulse velocity. The rock mass along the tunnel and shaft was also characterized by empirical classification systems. The classification systems included the Rock Mass Rating (B1IR) and the Rock Mass Strength Determination (RHSD). The results of the field explorations, field testing, laboratory testing, and rock classifications were used to divide the rocks into two structural groups. These rock groups were defined as volumes of rock wherein the rock mass behaves similarly in response to the excavation. Each group, therefore, required separate rock engineering consideration.

Shotcrete is widely accepted as an indispensable form of ground control around the world. Other Surface Support Liners such as mesh have been around as long as shotcrete while other Thin Support Liners (TSLs) have been introduced in recent decades. TSLs, however, have yet to replace shotcrete in many applications believed to be “perfect” for them. On the other hand, some recently introduced technologies may be on the brink of meeting most surface rock support requirements economically and safely. This paper will discuss rockfall statistics, small rockfall prevention and compare different surface support liners such as mesh, shotcrete and TSLs. Additionally, a shaft sinking TSL application example will be presented.

Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

The aim of this paper is to present the progress of the plan of the Greek Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) at the Lignite Centre of Megalopolis in Peloponnesus (southern Greece) to manage impacts on local communities in areas affected by its activities during the lignite mining operation and post-closure. The reclamation works in the waste dump areas of the mines that constitute the Megalopolis Lignite Centre, concerning the utilization of waste dumps for infrastructure community projects constructions are discussed. Moreover, selected environmental indicators concerning land use and closure and rehabilitation are presented.

Ore and waste cannot always be visually separated. The distinction between ore and waste may need to be made on the basis of blasthole sampling. Hand drawn dig limits or computer-generated contour lines do not account for uncertainty, economics or equipment. Geometric methods for interpreting grade information such as the polygonal or triangulation methods share the same limitations as contouring. Geostatistical techniques exist for the realistic modeling of grade variations and uncertainty. Decision analysis techniques exist for the binary classification of ore, and waste blocks in the presence of this uncertainty. Block-by-block classification is not enough; mining equipment cannot exercise free selection of blocks. There is a need for procedures to determine optimal dig limits that account for (1) the uncertainty in the grades, (2) the economics of risk-qualified decision-making, and (3) the ability of the mining equipment to dig to specific limits. This paper presents a procedure for optimal determination of dig limits that account for these constraints. Simulated annealing (SA) is used with modest computational requirements because the number of variables is relatively small. The solution of the optimization problem is dig limits that maximize profit under multiple constraints. The method is illustrated with different constraints and tested against hand drawn dig limits in a "Dig Limit Challenge," which illustrates the efficacy of the new method.

Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.

MULSIM/NL and La Model are displacement-discontinuity programs which have been used quite successfully in the past to provide detailed structural models of various single and multiple-seam mining situations. However, both of these programs required fairly complex details of the mine plan and topography to be manually input into the program, often taking several days of work. Recently, automatic mine and topographic grid generation capabilities have been added to the MULSIM/NL and La Model programs, reducing the input time requirements from days to hours. This paper discusses the algorithms used for the automatic grid generation and demonstrates the utility of the new capabilities with a case study.

INTRODUCTION Following the world stock market debacle in October 1987, it would have been foolhardy to expect that securing equity funding in 1988 would be easy. Indeed, major equity financing&apos;s for gold mining companies have until recently been few and far between in the weeks and months following Black Monday. As a result, gold bullion loans have taken on an increasingly important role among producing firms in the industry. During 1988, the role of bullion loans has become increasingly complex and controversial. Some observers herald the emergence of a new breed of bullion loans - such as the 1,000,000 ounce loan to Newmont Mining, and the 400,000+ ounce facilities drawn down by Bond International Gold and Placer Pacific - as both increasing the public&apos;s awareness of the technique, and representing the dawn of a new age of gold financing. But are these recent loan facilities significantly different than those issued worldwide during the early to mid 19801s? Similarly, observers have voiced concerns regarding the role that gold loans play in the world&apos;s bullion markets, specifically in relation to their impact on prices. Have the new generation of mega-loans depressed current and future prices? Has the current surge of bullion loans irrevocably changed the nature of the gold market? Is there an upper limit on the number and size of gold loans?

Introduction Amidst the apparent chaos of the final push to complete a major construction project, a small group of specialists works with great intensity. Armed with yellow "in test" and green "turned over to operations" tags, these startup engineers follow detailed preoperational test procedures to confirm that a plant is ready to operate. They follow a test schedule designed to complete individual process system in the order they will be needed by operations. After extensive preliminary testing, the startup engineers begin the truly exciting part of their work - initial operations. The thrill of engaging the clutch for the first time on a 10,000 horsepower grinding mill makes all the long hours worthwhile. Preoperational testing and startup are of critical importance to the success of a project. No other aspect of a construction project allows such opportunities for success or failure, and no other aspect is so critically influenced by careful planning. At Bechtel, the tasks of preoperational testing and startup are among the responsibilities of the Mine and Plant Operations group. The Preoperational Testing Process Preoperational testing is the transition phase between constructon and startup on a new plant. It includes the preparation of detailed test schedules and procedures. The schedules are used to coordinate construction completion activities, so that systems are available for startup and operations in a rational sequence. The procedures form the basis for performing the testing and documenting its completion. Tests include instrument calibration, wire insulation tests, wire termination verification, mechanical alignments and inspections, and system cleaning and flushing. Where possible, the systems are then operated on water and their performance recorded. Normally, either the construction contractor or a team of specialists has the responsibility to perform preoperational testing. Witnesses to the testing may be owner operations and maintenance personnel, engineers from the design firm, or specialists assigned to the project who provide assistance and guidance to the contractor in addition to witnesing the work.
