Gold is often associated with arsenopyrite in many refractory gold ores. The selective recovery of arsenopyrite by flotation is therefore necessary in order to maximize the recovery of gold. However, the complexity of arsenopyrite flotation often makes it difficult to obtain a high recovery from real lean gold ore. This paper presents the results of arsenopyrite flotation by ultrasonic pretreatment in micro flotation experiments and bench scale flotation tests. The tests showed that pure arsenopyrite exhibited low natural floatability due to the oxidation on the mineral surface under ambient conditions. Using ultrasonic pretreatment, the oxidation film was ruptured and the floatability was enhanced greatly. The presence of Fe (III) was found to inhibit the flotation of arsenopyrite and this depression was also removed by the ultrasonic pretreatment. This result explained why the arsenopyrite in real ore is often difficult to float and how ultrasonic pretreatment can effectively improve the arsenopyrite flotation in real gold ores. Guanidine (GMM) was found to be a superior collector for arsenopyrite in acidic medium and xanthate in alkaline medium.

"Previously, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals (tennantite, sinnerite, and lautite) and compared to enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. INTRODUCTION A comprehensive thermodynamic review has recently been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur system (Gow et al., 2014a-d). The free energies of over 100 species were collected from various authors and thermodynamic databases to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams, using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software, STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database was listed and discussed by Gow et al. (2014A). Resulting diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2014a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014b), and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2014c). In this study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams are generated by changing the copper-arsenic-sulfur stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species are shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions, and sulfur oxidation states."

In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

This paper deals with a group of subjects so familiar to all of us that we might question the need for discussion. Even so, nearly every day's business turns up expensive examples of differences in understanding, misdirected assumptions and incomplete technical purchase documents. As our international activities increase, so do these problem areas. Their expense in both money and embarrassment gives rise to this attempt to focus a little extra attention on technical criteria and specifications. The two terms ?criteria? and "specifications" are, we believe, worth separating with respect to meaning. They should not be used interchangeably, although they often are. Criteria are by definition "standards for judging", whereas specifications are "enumerations of particulars". In relation to plant or project engineering, the criteria are the general rules and data which apply to the whole project and the specifications are the further listing of detailed requirements for specific contractual items or pieces of equipment. We'll look a little more closely at specifications after we give another minute or two to this "criteria" subject,

"A composite shell lining typically consists of an outer permanent sprayed concrete shell, a water proofing layer and an inner sprayed or cast concrete shell. Composite shell linings become more and more popular and have been built recently on large scale infrastructure projects. Surprisingly there is very little published literature on the actual structural design of composite linings. As a consequence there is a lack of common understanding on how to design a composite lining structure. Composite action of the outer shell (primary lining) initially carrying short term ground loads and the “unloaded” inner shell (secondary lining) require nonlinear concrete modelling to be able to assess the bearing capacity of the composite lining structure adequately. The composite action of the waterproofing membrane and the inner and outer shells can be considered either by simplified closed form solutions or by numerical models. Strength and stiffness parameters of membrane and concrete govern interaction of inner and outer shell. This paper should contribute to understanding composite lining behaviour with focus on the bearing capacity at limit state by taking into account the actual loading history. Possible ways and concepts on how to deal with these topics are presented, however a broader discussion on limit states of the composite lining materials – also in the long term will be required to come to an agreement on composite lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION Composite Lining Technology Traditionally the construction of shotcrete lined tunnels incorporates primary and secondary linings, separated by a sheet or a sprayable waterproofing membrane. The primary lining shotcrete is considered to be structurally temporary and the secondary lining to be permanent, leading to designs which ignore the bearing capacity of the primary lining in permanent condition. There was general perception that the shotcrete lining installed immediately at the tunnel face, experiencing strains up to 1% and even cracking in the early age, combined with mesh reinforcement additional support measures like lattice girder, spiles and bolts cannot be considered as a permanent structure. But also former shotcrete mixes showed significant weakness with respect to durability suggesting a more temporary nature of primary lining shotcrete. On the other hand it was clear that primary lining shotcrete does not disappear, it may lose probably a certain percentage of its bearing capacity, but discounting any contribution from the primary lining at all was considered inherently conservative. There were different strategies to account for the risk of reduced durability and bearing capacity of the primary lining, either by selecting moderate ground loads for the secondary lining design, by assuming that some residual load will be carried by the primary lining. This approach is very much based on experience. Another more rational possibility is to assume that the primary lining degrades into a rocklike material, which is weaker than the primary lining shotcrete but still imparts some strength to the ground around the secondary lining, but does not need to comply with any concrete design codes any more."

The adsorption behavior of sodium oleate on brucite, Mg (OH)2, has been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Both internal reflection and diffuse reflection (DRIFT) methods were used to characterize the adsorbed oleate on brucite. DRIFT measurements were shown to be quantitative, and an equilibrium adsorption isotherm was obtained. The conformational behavior of the adsorbed oleate was investigated as a function of adsorption density. It was found that at sub-monolayer coverage the alkyl chains of the adsorbed oleate had more ?gauche? character than at multi-layer coverages. Also, DRIFT spectra revealed that the adsorbed species were magnesium dioleate. For internal reflection measurements single crystals of MgO were hydrolyzed to form a thin Mg (OH)2 layer.

Thirty years ago, the appearance of a female mining engineer, geologist or miner in a company, union or mine environment would have been unthought of, unwelcomed and violently opposed. Twenty years ago, the intellectual perception of the news that women were interested in becoming mining engineers, geologists and miners had been accepted by the industry-but no one wanted to be the first to hire one of these exotic creatures. Ten years ago, those who had been most vehemently opposed to the philosophical idea of women working in these areas were faced with competent, productive engineers, geologists and miners-who only incidentally happened to be women-and began hiring them. Historically, of course, one can always find the isolated individual who worked in these areas-the first female graduate of the Colorado School of Mines with a mining engineering degree graduated in 1903-but the concept of woman as professional engineer was very slow in arriving in the United States. The few who worked as miners generally worked in small family enterprises, such as some of the coal mines in both Eastern and Western United States. Others accompanied husbands or sons into wilderness areas searching for gold and other precious metals.

"Over the past decade, as conventional underground deposits have been depleted, mining operations have been forced to produce at greater depths and in more geologically and geometrically challenging conditions. As such, there has been a global increase in the application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) in tabular deposits utilizing open stope mining method with a delayed backfill placement. Despite the extensive use of CPB, many fundamental factors affecting the design of safe and economical fill structures are still not well understood. A critical issue in the design of backfilled stopes is the determination of stress states within the fill material itself as well as the surrounding rock mass. Analytical equations provide a means of quickly evaluating the effectiveness of a given design. However, in developing these equations large assumptions are implemented to simplify the design problem. It is important that one understands these simplifications as well as their effect on the overall design. This paper investigates common analytical equations utilized in the evaluation of single vertical backfilled stopes and their assumptions through comparisons to numerical modeling results. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND As the mining industry continues to produce at greater depths and in more geometrically and geologically complex conditions, cemented paste backfill (CPB) has gained traction as a means of providing localized ground support in modern stope-and-fill mining operations. The application of CPB in stope-and-fill mining as a ground support material has led to the reduction of mine waste costs, while increasing both mine production and stability. In an attempt to achieve total extraction of the mining reserve, stope-and-fill mining operations often employ a primary-secondary excavation-support sequence (see Figure 1). In this practice, primary stopes are initially excavated and then backfilled in a two-stage pour; plug and final pours. During the first stage (plug), a CPB material with increased cementitious content is placed at the bottom of the stope providing a strong base from which to build a backfill structure as well as protect mine works from material breakthrough. Following placement, the backfill plug is allowed to cure to a given strength as designated by the mine design. Upon achieving the required cure strength, a less cementitious CPB material is used to backfill the remaining stope area. This is referred to as the final pour stage. With all primary stopes excavated and supported using backfill, the extraction of the secondary stopes commences as primary stopes are utilized as artificial pillars. While the application of CPB in a primary-secondary extraction-support mining sequence allows for a substantial increase in reserve recovery, it is imperative the mining personnel and planning engineers have a clear understanding of the material’s behavior and stress interaction with the surrounding rock mass to ensure the most efficient, cost-effective, and safe extraction of underground deposits."

Peat has unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, high buffering capacity, and it is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste treatment applications. The literature indicates promising use of peat in treating municipal and on-site effluent, removal of low concentrations of heavy metals from wastewaters, and adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

The need for an integrated approach to optimization of unit operations in both the pit and the mill has long been recognized, but the complexity and nature of the overall problem has up to now resisted solution. This paper reports on a modeling methodology which couples symbolic and numeric computing to unify operations in both the pit and mill. The ultimate goal of this work is to optimize all operations that are influenced by blasting. Blasting plays a key role in all facets of operations. Obviously, drilling and blasting costs are determined by blast design, but the down-stream costs that are closely related to blasting results are often treated as separate functions: loading, hauling, cleanup, and crushing and grinding are all heavily influenced. Diggablilty and bucket fill factor are a function of fragmentation, the condition of the floor and uniformity in the shape of the muck pile. Likewise, cycle times and loading delays partially determine haul cycles, while fragmentation distribution and size determines the efficiency of truck loading. Removal and breakage of oversize causes loading delays and increases cleanup costs. The influence of blasting doesn't stop at the crusher. Mill productivity, power consumption, and maintenance are a function of the feed. Even at the SAG mill a reduction of a critical particle size during blasting can increase throughput. Thus, a bottle-neck for production far removed from unit operations in the pit can be alleviated by a modification in blast design. The question is: how do we optimize blasting with respect not only to itself but to al\ related mining and milling operations? For that matter, how do we even model blasting so that we can control the results of a blast?

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, pre-existing tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the Chquicamata mine began to open. Various forms of instrumentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of two and one-half days and preventing any injuries to persons or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are the possible modes of failure.

"Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

Loki Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. is developing the Brewery Creek Mine, an open pit heap leach gold mine, 55 km East of Dawson City in Yukon, Canada. Mineable reserves are 17.1 million tonnes of ore grading 1.45 grams/tonne, containing 24.8 tonnes (797 000 oz) of gold. Ore processing will employ a cyanide heap leach using run of mine ore. Permitting this mine has drawn significant attention because the heap leach technology, while proven in other jurisdictions, has not been used in Yukon. Engineering design of the heap leach was similar to that for heaps in more temperate climates, with the added issues of permafrost and cold weather operations. Solution balance with seasonal placement of ore and year -round leaching requires very large pond capacity for spring thaw conditions.

The stability of longwall chain pillars depends not only on the mechanical properties of coal and surrounding rocks, but also geological and mining conditions. In order to evaluate the effects of each, variable, the orthogonal experiment design was employed in this study for significance analysis. The study concluded that the stability of longwall chain pillars is mainly controlled by the ratio of pillar stress to pillar strength, the ratio of Young's moduluds of the roof to coal and floor to coal, entry width, pillar width and the internal friction angle of coal. Additionally, horizontal stress, panel width and mining height also play a significant role.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The Henderson Mine is a large underground panel cave molybdenum mine located near Empire, Colorado. Secondary blasting requirements have varied from one shot per 27 tonnes (30 tons) to one shot per 900 tonnes (1,000 tons) of ore. Geology, structure, cave abutment loads, and location of the ore in the column all affect the amount of oversize boulders (greater than three-fourths cubic meter or one cubic yard) that require secondary breakage. The primary method of breakage utilizes cone charges (plastic funnels filled with an emulsion) placed on accessible oversize rocks. Hangups in the brow area of the drawpoint are drilled with a self contained diesel hydraulic drill and loaded with gelatin dynamite. High hang-ups located beyond the reach of the secondary drill are "bombed" in with strategically placed emulsion bundles or ANFO bags loaded in place though a sectioned aluminum pipe.

"Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Not only does quartz have many valuable industrial applications, it is also one of the most concentrated gangue minerals encountered in the processing of other minerals. Minerals such as hematite, apatite, calcite, feldspar, barite, and many more. Numerous applications of industrial minerals are sensitive to the hardness and abrasiveness encountered with quartz minerals, while other applications may lead to processing challenges for the end user. Therefore, process and chemistry optimization must be applied to ensure optimal grade is obtained for these valued industrial minerals. Extensive studies have been conducted in processing various industrial minerals, thus achieving a range of quality specifications, which entailed the application of ArrMaz’s CustoFloat and CustAmine collectors towards the separation of quartz from other minerals. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals often have the misfortune of the gangue mineral being very similar in surface charge, and coordination properties, to that of the mineral of interest. An example is seen in phosphate beneficiation, when dolomite can be a gangue minerals (Table 1). Therefore, the development of processing reagents are quite complicated. Some minerals, like clays, may be washed away. However, most require the manipulation of the pH, in efforts to fine tune the system to the narrow difference in isoelectric points of the different minerals, as well as the knowledge, and resources that are necessary to exploit the differences to yield and an optimal grade/recovery. In some cases, the application of a depressant may be required, such as the phosphoric acid commonly applied to achieve the optimal balance of grade/recovery for phosphate from a mineral with elevated concentrations of dolomite (Wang, 2016), or the application of hydrofluoric acid to assist in producing feldspar product from a mineral rich in quartz (Heyes, 2012).ArrMaz's CustoFloat and CustAmine product lines have successfully been applied to the processing of industrial minerals for more than 50 years. Applications include, but not limited to phosphate, sand (glass, foundry & high purity quartz), clays (feldspar, kaolin, etc.), and many carbonaceous and sulfate minerals. The successes of these 50 years are largely due to ArrMaz's ability to tailor make the processing chemistries to fit the ever changing and declining mineral feed grade and variations in water quality (Moore, 2015; Moore, 2016). Those of us who have directed our efforts toward the construction of tunnels have long maintained that tunnel construction is more closely an art than it is a science. We have spent time underground with hard-bitten, tobacco chewing shift bosses and superintendents who have made seat-of-the-pants decisions at the face which have been based upon their long experience underground coupled with uncanny intuition. The courage and skill of these men in the performance of their art is legendary. Without question, they have constituted the backbone of the tunnel construction industry. But just as John Henry, the steel driving man, despite his stout heart and dedication to his task, was supplanted by the steam drill, I fear that our tunnel stiff, at least as we have known him, will become an endangered if not extinct species. The reason for this is clearly that tunnel construction is slowly but inexorably making the transition from being an art into being a science, and more and more its performance is requiring the services of scientists as opposed to artists. The tunneling art has been undergoing change for many years, and yet until recently the changes have not been basic. We have improved the way we do the same old things. For example, John Henry would be flabbergasted if he saw the rock drills we use today. He would not have engaged in the legendary drilling contest with one of our modern drills, He would have simply conceded defeat.

Arch Mineral Corporation and Rocky Mountain Energy's Medicine Bow Mine in Wyoming presented an interesting challenge to the concept of mining a multiple-seam, dipping coal in the Hanna Basin. The 3362 and 2962 pits at MBCC were designed in a multiple seam coal consisting of 4 (and in some areas 5) bands of coal; these coal beds are all in the Ferris formation. The area was subject to some localized faulting and a major fault caused a physical restraint that we mined up against in our final cut. Using a 1570 dragline as the principal stripping machine, the concept of developing a bench for stripping the lower seams from the low-wall side of the pit was initiated. The results of this method of stripping were very satisfying for this pit through the completion of pit life and prompted us to use it in other areas at MBCC and at our other operations. Mining a dipping coal presents a small twist to conventional "flat" coal stripping. The spoil has a tendency to continually try to slide into the pit and the increased overburden on each cut as you mine down the dip creates spoil problems unless adequate design provisions are made prior to stripping.
