"The property of Pamour Porcupine Mines, Limited, is in the eastern Porcupine area, about 12 miles northeast of Timmins. It covers parts of lots 3-6 (inclusive), cons. 5 and 6, Whitney tp., Cochrane district, Ontario. It is an amalgamation of the old La Palme, Three Nations, and Porcupine Grande properties.The first discovery on the Pamour was made in 1911. During 1911 to 1914 a small shaft was sunk on the Three Nations vein to the 200-foot level and a 100-ton stamp mill was put in operation, but only a small production was achieved. The property remained idle from 1914 to 1923. In 1924 some diamond drilling was done along the Keewatin-Timiskaming contact with some encouraging results, but the gold mineralization encountered was too low in general at the price of gold then prevailing to warrant further · work. The increase in the price of gold revived interest in the area, and the above noted amalgamation was effected in 1934. Options were taken and successively dropped by two large mining companies. Following this, exploration both on the surface and underground was started by Quebec Gold Mining Corporation, Limited. Diamond drilling in the early part of 1933 showed considerable ore in conglomerate and greywacke to the east. In the middle of 1935 Noranda Mines, Limited, assumed control and management. A new shaft was sunk and the property was ·equipped with a mill having an initial capacity of750 tons a day. This was subsequently enlarged to 1,500 tons a day.From the commencement of milling (May 16, 1936) to the end of 1946, 5,025,545 tons of ore having an average grade of 0.1327 oz. a ton ($4.64 at $35 an oz.) have been mined and milled."

Industrial mineral deposits are widespread in Newfoundland and Labrador and a variety of commodities are produced. The province has the only pyrophyllite mine in Canada and also produces asbestos, gypsum, silica, barite, limestone, gemstones, cement and other structural materials. Large reserves of these and other industrial minerals are known and several deposits are likely future producers. Most producers are wellestablished and have large tonnages of ore reserves.

"1. Belt-Drop Agglomeration Preferred at Heap Leach Operations. The agglomeration method now preferred at heap leach operations utilizes belt-drops along conveyors. Belt-drop agglomeration is being designed into numerous upcoming heap leach operations. It offers substantial capital cost savings over previously favored drum agglomerators. It has such significant operating and maintenance advantages that some drum agglomerators have been retired in favor of belt-drops.The majority of heap leach operations are now built with crushing included in the flowsheet. If crushing is included, belt-drop agglomeration can be added for almost no cost. The agglomeration equipment is simply a few conveyor transfers, designed to provide the tumbling and rolling action which forms the agglomerates. Controlled water sprays are needed at each of these agglomeration transfers. Cement or lime is added as a binder, to stabilize the agglomerates. This reagent is also needed to raise pH to safe operating levels.Addition of the pH control reagent before stacking the ore offers a reagent cost benefit. In the belt-drop mixing technique, the ore is intimately mixed with the lime (or cement). After stacking on the heaps, when the cyanide solution is sprayed onto the high-ph ore, very little cyanide is consumed. Without the pre-addition of lime or cement, the leach solution is sprayed onto neutral ore. The mixture of high-pH leach solution and neutral pH ore causes the solution pH to drop, releasing cyanide gas. This release is minor from a safety viewpoint, much less than dangerous, but the gas release is a costly waste of the cyanide reagent. Pilot-scale comparison tests were made at Pinson. Ore pre-treated with lime or cement showed 30% less cyanide consumption than untreated ore."

"In early 1995 Cluff Mining commissioned a newly constructed high density tailings thickener at its Cluff Lake uranium mill. The 85 ft diameter high density thickener is one of the first of its kind in North America, and incorporates the novel paste technology in its design to produce densified (in the range of 60 -65% solids) mill tailings suitable for stable deposition in the tailings management area. This paper discusses the impetus behind the installation of such an unconventional thickener, and the many trying experiences in making it operational.IntroductionCluff Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cogema Resources Inc., is the operator of a uranium mine and mill complex at Cluff Lake which is located in northern Saskatchewan. Since 1980, the company has developed and mined out several different ore bodies within the Cluff Lake region for the production of uranium concentrates, commonly known as yellow cake. Based on the known ore reserves, the Cluff Lake operations are projected to last till the early 2000's.Tailings from the Cluff Lake mill have been discharged to a tailings management area consisting of a tailings pond and two facilities for primary and secondary treatment systems. The tailings pond has an impervious bentonite lined dam, and it is divided into a solids and a liquids holding areas. Until the beginning of 1995, the mill tailings were discharged in two separate lines to the solids pond; one line carried the slurry residue of 45-50% solids (w/w) from the CCD circuit, and the other discharged raffinate tails containing less than 1 % (w/w) gypsum precipitate. Supernatant in the solids pond is treated in the primary treatment system prior to discharging to the liquids pond. Figure 1 shows the site plan of Cluff Lake tailings management area.It has been estimated that by the end of 1995 the solids pond would be filled to about 60% of its design capacity, and probably would be full before the year 2000. Therefore, Cluff Mining had to consider a more efficient tailings disposal method that could extend the service life of the existing Cluff Lake tailings management area. A high density tailings thickener was believed to be the most practical and economical system for tailings disposal at Cluff Lake mine."

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. The basic system is quite simple. It consists of five main elements, as shown in Figure 1, which are:1. Prime Mover - generally an electric motor.2. Hydraulic Pump - fixed or variable positive displacement type such as a piston or vane p.mp which displaces a constant amount of fluid for ead1 revolution - this unit converts mechanical energy of the prime mover into fluid energy.3. "Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."

"""Preg-robbing"" of gold by carbonaceous matter during the cyanidation of certain types of carbonaceous gold ores is well documented. Recent studies established that ""preg-robbing"" of gold is not limited to carbonaceous matter. Gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite grains was detected and quantified by TOF-LIMS (Time of Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Crystallites of pyrite from a number of ores from different geological environments have been shown to have gold on their surface apparently sorbed from the ore forming solutions. Surface gold accounts for significant fractions of the gold head assay. Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant cyanide solutions was also documented, and accounts for significant losses to tailings. Preventative measures are discussed.1.0 IntroductionThe detection and subsequent quantification of gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite particulates came about during routine determinations of the deportment of gold employing the comprehensive mineralogical approach (Chryssoulis and Cabri, 1990). In some pyritic gold ores it was discovered that the sum of the various forms in which gold ""conventionally"" occurs, was short of the gold assay. The mineralogical procedure used involves the independent determination of each fraction of gold, in other words there is no form of gold which is calculated ""by difference"". The systematic shortfall after having added the forms of gold listed in Table 1 led to the inquiry for the 'missing' gold and its discovery on the surface of pyrite grains, such as crystal facets and fractured surfaces.Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant solutions was first described by Lloyd. In his studies, preg-robbing was measured by changes in the solutions/solids gold assays. This paper describes the first application of a direct measurement method for surface gold on pyrite particles from untreated and processed samples, its impact on gold deportment and processing. The advantage of the direct measurement lies in the absence of interference from other forms of gold, leading to more accurate and precise determinations of this unconventional form of gold."

"The development of two large, high-grade uranium projects has been proposed for northern Saskatchewan. The projects are now under review by a joint federal/provincial panel. The McArthur River project is owned by the McArthur River joint venture (Cameco Corporation 53.991 %, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 29.775%, Cogema Resources Inc. 16.234%) and operated by Cameco. Cameco proposes to mill the McArthur River ore at the existing Key Lake mill. The Cigar Lake project is owned by the Cigar Lake joint venture (Cameco Corporation 48.75%, Cogema Resources Inc. 36.375%, Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. 12.875%, Korea Electric Power Corporation 2.000%). The Cigar Lake joint venture proposes that Cameco operate the Cigar Lake mine for the owners, and that Cogema mill the ore at their McClean Lake mill, now under construction. Proposed systems provide safe mining and ore handling, and allow the milling of McArthur River ore at Key Lake and Cigar Lake ore at McClean Lake. This avoids the disturbance of new sites for milling and tailings disposal.The McArthur River and Cigar Lake deposits are the largest known high-grade uranium deposits in the world. The ore grades at McArthur River and Cigar Lake are at least 100 times those that are mined elsewhere. It is proposed to mine these deposits using remote underground mining methods, to crush and grind the ore underground, to pump a thickened ore slurry to surface, and to transport it in special containers by truck to the mills.During all mining and processing stages the ore is fully contained. Radon emission is controlled by positive ventilation of all process vessels, with the process ventilation backed up by the primary mine ventilation system. Radiation is controlled by heavy steel pipe and vessel walls, concrete walls and sometimes lead sheeting."

"Campbell Mine which has been in continuous operation since 1949 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past 3 years. This paper describes the process changes which have occurred at the Campbell Mill since 1991. The paper discusses the engineering, construction and startup of the effluent treatment circuit, the new oxide filtering and merrill-crowe precipitation circuit, and the changes to the pressure oxidation circuit. Particular attention is paid to startup problems and solutions to these problems. A review of the benefits and results of these process changes is also discussed. Future changes are also briefly reviewed with anticipated goals and expectations.IntroductionCampbell Mine is a gold mine 100% owned and operated by Placer Dome Canada. It is located in Balmertown, Ontario which is located 300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Campbell Mine has been in continuous operation since 1949, producing nearly 8,000,000 ounces. In 1993 Campbell Mine is budgeted to produce 289, 750 ounces of gold at a cash cost of $157 US/ounce. Daily mill tonnage is budgeted for 1,430 tons/day but has milled as high as 1,600 tons/day on a consistent basis. Recovery in 1993 is 93.4% and is budgeted to average 94.5% in 1994.In the 1992 edition of the proceedings of the Canadian Mineral Processors conference I described the changes that were made at Campbell starting in 1989. This paper continues where the 1992 paper ended and discusses the changes to the Campbell mill since that lime. The changes to Campbell since January 1992 have been numerous with capital expenditure in the mill exceeding $14.1 million. This paper describes three primary projects since that lime: the effluent treatment project ($5.5 million), the oxide leach/filtering and merrill-crowe project ($4.6 million) and the pretreatment project ($2.81 million). The focus of this paper is to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, and some of the initial operational problems and solutions applied to those problems."

"A 100 kg/hr portable flotation pilot plant has been operated at Kidd Creek Mines with the objectives of:(a) determining performance expected by column flotation circuits on primary zinc and copper cleaning, and (b) evaluating column flotation circuit configurations.The self-supporting pilot plant, owned by Minnovex Technologies Inc. and operated by Minnovex and the University of Toronto, consisted of three 16 cm diameter by 6.5 m high columns and a bank of four Denver No. 7 cells. It was configurable to any arrangement using these four (or fewer) units. The columns were controlled through the use of multiple pressure transducer measurements. This paper presents the approach to testing and the results of more than 70 circuit tests. INTRODUCTIONThe integration and retrofitting of flotation columns within existing mechanical cell flotation circuits is becoming a common occurrence. The correct approach to this integration, however, is often difficult to define, due to a scarcity of previous experience and the difficulty in predicting column circuit performance. In most cases, the effect of column implementation has been experimentally assessed using a single pilot column, with the consequence that selection of an appropriate circuit to implement is difficult. Important considerations are the impact that column water addition will have on the existing operations, and the differences between mechanical cell and column performance in integrated cleaning circuits.To address the problem of circuit selection a portable flotation pilot plant, consisting of both columns and mechanical cells, was designed and constructed by Minnovex Technologies. The pilot plant was structured for complete flexibility of circuit configuration, with the intent to provide a means by which both research and plant personnel could determine the best possible column circuit configuration for a given application."

"The Williams Mine, Canada's largest gold mine, processes over 6,000 t/d of ore utilizing SAG/ball milling, leaching and CIP, carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining to produce gold dare bullion.Grinding accounts for over 50% of milling costs with grinding media, power and mill liners making up over 75% of grinding costs. Since 1991, several changes in these areas have been made which have significantly reduced costs, while fineness of grind and mill recovery have both been increased.This paper discusses the changes made in the grinding circuit over the past few years and assesses their impact on operating costs and mill operations.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is located in the Hemlo area of northwestern Ontario, about 40 km east of Marathon. It is operated by the Williams Operation Corporation, which is equally owned by Teck Corp. and Homestake Canada Inc. Canada's largest gold mine, the Williams Mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a rate of 3, 000 t/d. Mill throughputs have typically exceeded design, averaging 3, 397 t/d in 1986, and 3,380 t/d in 1987. In August 1988, production was increased to 6,000 t/d. Throughput averaged 4,212 t/d in 1988. Production increased over the next few years averaging 5,477 t/d in 1989, 6,248 t/d in 1990, 5,987 t/d in 1991, and 6,283 t/d in 1992. With a recovery of over 95.5%, production for the first three quarters in 1993 is averaging 6,408 t/d.GeologyThe main ore body is a steeply dipping conformable zone of microcline-quartz-muscovite rock. It occupies the contact zone between hanging wall metasedimentary rocks and foot wall felsic quartz feldspar porpyritic rocks of possible volcanic or subvolcanic intrusive origin. The ore body is enveloped by muscovite schists which are thickest on the footwall side. The schist is enriched with tourmaline, pyrite, and green mica containing vanadium and barium. The ore body contains pyrite and barite which occurs mostly in laminae and bands to veinlets and breccia fillings. The gold occurs as free (native) grains, 20 to 30 µm in size at grain junctions of the microcline and quartz. Visible gold is rare in the main zone. There are commonly two or more discernable layers of economic value which are separated by weakly gold mineralized material which usually consists of muscovite schist, barite rich zones or sulphide poor-microcline-quartz rock and in the upper and western fringes by biotite rich schist with feldspathic fragmental characteristics. Molybdenite is a common constituent as very fine disseminated grains in the microcline-quartz rock and is most prominent with gold enrichment. Stibnite and realgar are two of the more common accessory sulphides."

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. "The vulnerability of Canadian and U.S. companies, their directors, officers and employees to onerous penalties associated with violations of environmental statutes and common law actions has provided the impetus for the increasing use of environmental audits. This trend is developing in direct proponion to the cost and difficulty of obtaining liability insurance. Companies operating in British Columbia should be cognizant of developing legislative and enforcement trends and their implications for individual and corporate responsibility. Canadian mining companies doing business in the U.S. should be particularly aware of the environmental exposure which may be assumed with property acquisition or by operations which produce or use any of an ever-increasing list of regulated substances.The environmental audit is now a key component of prudent business planning which will identify noncompliances and environmental liabilities, outline defensive strategies, and assist in a legal defence should charges be laid. This paper will discuss the purpose and mechanics of an environmental audit with emphasis on those features which will maximize protection against statutory and common law actions.IntroductionThe environmental audit is but one weapon in a comprehensive defensive strategy for corporate and individual survival in an increasingly litigious world. The principles of the environmental audit have been formulated as a logical response by management to an ever-growing list of environmental vulnerabilities, which often have the potential to result in plant shutdowns, prosecutions or fmancial liability of major proportions. Accordingly, the audit may play a critical role in maintaining profitability as well as assisting in the defence of a company and its employees against actions taken by regulatory agencies and citi7.cns under statute and common law. Should convictions result from these actions, the penalties are likely to be ameliorated by the demonstration of due diligence through management policy supporting the audit procedure.An awareness of environmental sensitivities, strict adherence to licensing requirements, and planning for environmental emergencies are now generally considered to be as important to profitable performance as operating costs, metal prices, and labour peace. Why is this so? The increased priority given to environmental matters is partly a result of changing attitudes amongst the mining profession, but perhaps more importantly, it is also a direct consequence of the proliferation of ever more stringent environmental legislation, the targeting of management for responsibility and the draconian penalties imposed for violations of such legislation. Contributing to this trend are recent court decisions involving disputes of an environmental nature in which the standard of care required for a successful defence now requires almost super-human diligence in environmental management. The principle of ""strict liability"" (in which negligence or permit violation does not have to be shown) is also being increasingly applied in the resolution of civil actions."

It can improve productivity for the overall benefit of an operation. Organizations can therefore use training as a mean to achieve their specific goals. Training is not the solution to every performance problem. However, in many cases, it can be a very effective way to attain desired performance.The benefits of training are often difficult to assess. However, to remain competitive, organizations must introduce new products and innovative technologies. Often, they can do both most effectively through suitable training interventions.In order for the effort and investment of training to provide optimal results, two points of view should be adopted.• An overall view of the system in which training is to be applied.• A systematic approach to the design of training (Stolovitch and Keeps, 1989)."

"The molybdenite associated with copper porphyry ores is generally treated in a flotation circuit consisting of a separation and a cleaning section. In the last few years column flotation cells have replaced the numerous counter-current stages that were previously used in the cleaning section. Despite this, little has been published regarding the number of column cleaning stages required. Therefore a Moly flotation database is assembled with the objective of verifying the existence of a common upgrading profile. This can then be used as a guide in the prediction of the number of stages required to achieve a given concentrate grade.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the first use of Column Flotation was on copper flotation products, the popularity and understanding of their operation was not really achieved until they were widely implemented in Moly circuits in early 1983. The use of columns in Moly plants has since left a legacy of information, both published and unpublished. The data collected since that time has been used primarily used to establish column operating parameters and to determine upgrading potential within the circuit.Byproduct Moly generally occurs with porphyritic copper ores in concentrations less than 0.1% MoS2. As such, piloting a new moly ore to produce, say 5 Kg/Hr MoS2, in a slurry approximately 1 Lt/min (at 10% solids), requires a moly plant feed of about 570 Kg/Hr, which translates to a mill feed rate of 200 to 800 Tonnes per day (depending whether you deal with Chilean or Canadian ores). Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

Before entering into a discussion of wet washing, it will be advisable to consider the various phases and conditions sur- rounding the problem of cleaning coal from the Corbin mines. Corbin is located in the south-east part of British Columbia in the Crowsnest Pass district, about 35 miles north of the International boundary and about three miles west of the Flat-head Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is reached by a rail-way, about thirteen miles long, from McGillivray, B.C., a point on the Crowsnest branch of the Canadian Pacific rail-way, owned and operated by the Eastern British Columbia Railway Company, a subsidiary company of Corbin Coals, Limited. The coal is assumed to occur here, as principally elsewhere in the Rockies, in the Kootenai series of the Lower Cretaceous, but owing to the disturbed condition of the surrounding country and, therefore, the magnitude of the geological study involved, this has never been definitely worked out. The coal is of the usual Crowsnest high-grade steam-coal, containing from 9 to 12 per cent. of ash, but appears to have 4 to 5 per cent. less volatile combustible matter than other coals being mined in this district, a representative analysis being about as follows:

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

The results presented in this paper show that the gold solution dilution is a key parameter to control the dispersion of gold on ?-Al2O3 the selected support. The variation of concentration leads to changes in pH which modify the nature of gold complexes from HAuCl4 formed in the solution. These complexes are presented. Some of them (AuCl3(OH)- and AuCl2(OH)2 -) react with the surface of alumina and give interesting interaction. AuCl2(OH)2 complex has been considered as an ideal complex because of the strong anchorage of a bidentate species on the alumina. This complex is formed mainly in a solution of gold with a concentration of 10-4 M giving a pH of 3.5-4.5. The nature of the anchorage and the amount of chlorine, has an influence upon the formation of Au-Cl bridges which modify the dispersion of the gold on alumina of the final catalyst as shown by TEM.
