Characteristics of surface deformations i.e., sub¬sidence, inclination, curvature and horizontal strains, are evaluated, based on information obtained by direct field measurements over three longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield. Surface deformations have been precomputed using Bals' and Knothe's theories. The results have been compared with Bureau of Mines field data to evaluate the applicability of the two theories to the U.S. min¬ing conditions. Measured horizontal movements and the resulting horizontal strains differ as much as 300 percent from precomputed values. Topography has no detectable effect on vertical movements but appears to have substantial effect on the development of horizontal strains. The horizontal deformations computed from our field measurements generally exceed the limits used in other countries to protect surface structures.

In typical calorimetry the energy given off by a material under study is transferred to a water bath, whose temperature is sensed by a thermometer; for correct measurement the water bath must attain a uniform temperature to which the thermometer must respond. This introduces two sources of error, non-uniformity of the heat sink and a time lag until its temperature is registered. These errors may become important where a rapid process such as solidification of metals and alloys is being studied by means of Oelsen'sl quantitative thermal analysis. All pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process,9-11 but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open- circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams.

The presence of carbonaceous matter in gold ores presents a two-fold problem: (1) The poor release of gold from the carbonaceous matrix and (2) the uptake of dissolved gold by the carbonaceous leach residues. A critical review is presented of the published information from various parts of the world pertaining to the nature of the carbon-containing components of these ores and their different roles in the gold extraction process. Included in this paper are new results based on the authors' research on carbonaceous ores from the Prestea goldfields of Ghana. Methods for isolating and characterizing the carbon-containing materials are given and a discussion is presented of the interaction of the carbonaceous ores as well as the fractionated components with aurocyanide solutions. Emphasis is on basic physico-chemical phenomena, investigated with the aid of X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, adsorption, and electrophoretic mobility studies.

Axially unsymmetric ordered circulation patterns on the surface of a hemispherical constant volume drop with forced Internal motion were considered as a manifestation of hydrodynamic instability, which was affected by internal flow as well as by the properties of the interface A simplified mathematical model was analyzed In order to study the mechanism of onset of interfacial circulation from a non-circulatory basic state. Values of the critical Reynolds numbers were obtained when the basic state became a fully developed rotational flow and the values changed for different interfacial properties. The work describes a heretofore unreported surface flow pattern on drop surfaces From a practical point of new, any motion in the interface of a droplet can have a significant effect of mass transfer rates in solvent extraction processes Although surface motion in droplets actual processing equipment is very complex, continued study of the fundamental nature of such phenomena should ultimately lead to more effective equipment design procedures.

A detailed study of the residence time distribution in an industrial balling circuit is presented. Using fired recycle pellets as a tracer impulse in each experiment, material was found to pass through the drum under plug flow conditions with a mean residence time of about 20 seconds. The time for a single pass through the entire circuit is about 60 seconds. Approximately three passes are required for fresh feed to report as product. Segregation of the tracer pellets in the system, according to their diameter, was observed and reasons for this are suggested. These results should be of potential use in the modeling and control of ball balling circuits in the iron ore industry.

RANKING high in the nation's wealth of natural resources, readily available liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons are nevertheless falling steadily in supply, while industrial requirements for hydro- carbon compounds are greater today than during the peak period of World War II. Theoretically, several processes will increase the future supply of liquid and gaseous fuels, but the practical application of these methods depends on two controlling factors: 1-that enough carbon- bearing material be available to warrant industrial exploitation, and 2-that the given process be physically, chemically, and economically applicable. With regard to the first factor, the Western Hemisphere is fortunately well supplied, see Table I.

THE opening of zinc-lead ore bodies in the lower chert beds of the Tri-State district, locally called sheet-ground deposits, [ ] presented several new economic operating problems to be solved before the low-grade deposits could be mined profitably. In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rock,1,2,3 metal,4,5 and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. A number of papers have been published on these subject, 7,8,9 some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'.7 Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making holes, only conventional drilling fluids have been considered. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (1 ½ in. ) and full-scale bits (6 ½ -9 5/8 in. ) . In view of the application of jets in deep holes, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids.

THE orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transforma-tions and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series1. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as Well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstätten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determina-tion of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new com-binations of lattice types.

THE Alabama Power Co. operates its Gorgas mine in Walker County, Ala., immediately adjacent to its steam plant. The coal mine property consists of some 19,000 acres of fee and mineral ownership lands, and all of the production from the mine-approximately 2500 tons per day-is utilized at the company's adjoining steam plant. The company is presently considering the purchase of additional acreage adjoining its present holdings which acquisition will almost double its reserves. The coal is transported from the mine over a short railroad spur in the company's own equipment, either directly to one of the large plants at Gorgas or to a storage pile. The longest haul is about 1 1/4 miles.
