The outcome of these tests has been twofold. They have served to demonstrate that the tiltmeter is a useful and dependable instrument which could prove to be of significant value in reaching the goals of landslide prediction and control, and they have raised a good many more questions about the mechanism of slides than they have answered. It seems likely that many of the old concepts and assumptions will be modified or discarded as more knowledge of actual field phenomenon is gained. Safety and economy are paramount concerns in determining slope stability. These two considerations govern the feasibility and character of slope construction from start to finish.

Recently, extensive field use has been made of a digital minicomputer incorporated into a modified geophysical prospecting method. This is a generalized induced polarization (IP) system called complex resistivity (CR) and has been successfully used in sulfide mineral exploration. The ease of use, portability and cost effectiveness of this computer-controlled method has provided a viable exploration tool based on a complex data acquisition system. Without the computer, this method would still be relegated to tedious laboratory measurements and theoretical studies.

It appears that Utah is about to add another mining district to its already impressive roster. This time it is the Great Salt Lake, whose high-mineral content waters are being subjected to intensive study aimed toward the recovery of potassium, magnesium and lithium compounds by solar evaporation techniques. Among the firms conducting such experiments is Lithium Corporation of America, which, in a joint venture with West Germany's Salzdetfurth A.G., is operating evaporating ponds and running engineering tests at a site near Little Mountain, about ten miles west of Ogden. Here, on the clay flats along the northern portion of the lake, LCA holds leases and options totalling about 55,000 acres in the Bear River Basin.

The first meeting of the Naval Consulting Board was held at the office of the Secretary of the Navy, Washington, D. C., on Oct. 6, 1915. The Board organized by electing Thomas A. Edison, Chairman, Peter Cooper Hewitt, First Vice-Chairman, William L. Saunders, Second Vice-Chairman, and Thomas. Robins, Secretary. All of these officers are members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. Most of the gears we use are involute and may be spur, helical, or herringbone. The gear contact is a combination of rolling and sliding action.

Y.-I would like to emphasize what Mr. Phalen says in his paper regarding the possible utilization of the waste acids in the West for the acid concentration of phosphate rock, and to call attention to the fact that this is already being done by Mr. Laist at Anaconda, who is producing concentrated phosphoric acid from these low-grade rocks. During the last year, he has not been able to carry this along to the extent he, had expected, owing to the tremendous demand which they have had for all the acid they can produce, so instead of having a. surplus of acid, as was expected, they are really short of this material for their electrolytic copper and zinc work.

Our moment of truth is in the offing. When the SME Directory is published in this July issue of [8:] we will know how good or how bad our system is for this computerized Directory. At this writing we have not seen the printout. The SME Directory is designed for maximum utility by the membership but this, of necessity, makes the job complicated. In the alphabetical section, names are listed last name first, followed by codes indicating the class of membership, year of election and divisional interests of each Member. This information is followed by job title, company division, company name and address complete with zip code, or simply by the mailing address of the Member in cases where he either has no company or has not supplied the company information.

Tourism is the second largest industry in the Tasmanian copper mining center of Queenstown, Australia, but it is not the historic mine the tourists come to see. The attraction is rather the devastation the mine has brought to the surrounding countryside which has made Queenstown literally the most colorful mining town in Australian history.

OCHRE is a semimineral composed by Nature of earth and a tincture of yellow caused by a fumosity of lead ore. By itself it is a material without any [38] metal, although when it is used in smelting it helps to melt the harsh and sour ores of metals. I do not know that it has any other use, except to painters. Bole is also a red viscous earth which has a very astringent and drying nature. It has no very apparent smell or taste, and I think that the cause of its redness lies in the fumosities of iron ore, for it is a companion to this and is found in its mines. It is an efficacious medicine against any poison and in this capacity has an action like terra sigillata* or perhaps better. In

John M. Cairns, in an interesting letter dated June. 19, 1918, tells us of his experiences in Italy. He says, "It may interest you to know I came out to Italy after being on the Afghan frontier of Indian Baluchistan, in August last year, and for some time was posted at Turin as Railway Transport officer. At that time Turin was in the toils of the riots which were the forerunners and preliminaries which led up to the great Italian retreat (Capretto). Since then I have been all over Italy from (deleted by the censor) in Transportation intelligence, and now have just been transferred to the Directorate of Requisitions and Hirings, which now permits great opportunities of going nearly all over Italy (deleted by the censor). THE discovery of SAP alloys (sintered aluminum powders) by lrmannl has stimulated investigations in other alloy systems.23 Not only do such alloys have good room-temperature properties, but they maintain high strength after prolonged service at elevated temperatures. In addition, they show high structural stability, including unusually high recrystallization temperatures. These characteristics are secured by dispersion hardening. For this investigation, Zn-ZnO alloys were selected. Practically, the fact that commercially pure zinc recrystallizes near room temperature prohibits strengthening and hardening by cold deformation and therefore limits the application of zinc where mechanical strength is important. This section includes the common calcium titano-silicate, Tiianite; also a number of silicates which contain titanium, but whose relations are not altogether clear; further the titanate, Perovskite, and niobo-titanate, Dysanalyte, which is intermediate between Perovskite and the species Pyrochlore, Micro- lite, Koppite of the following section. In general the part played by titanium in the many silicates in which it enters is more or less uncertain. It is probably in most cases, as shown in the preceding ages, to be taken as replacing the silicon; in others however, it seems to play the part of agaaic element; in schorlomite (p. 510) it may enter) in both relations.

The importance to the growing steel industry of the United States of a domestic supply of ferro-manganese or "spiegel" of a high grade, induces me to bring to your notice some details of the method by which a superior article is produced in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At Reschitza, Hungary, and probably at Laibach also (the Krainische Industrie Gesellschaft), ferro-manganese is made in a blastfurnace, with charcoal as fuel, and limestone as the flux. The ore is a ferruginous mixture, containing about 37 per cent. of sesquioxide of manganese. It is silicious, and somewhat, resembles, in its appearance, the manganese ore from Red Island, in the Bay of San Francisco, California. It contains about 29 per cent. of silica and some alumina, shown by the subjoined analysis:

For $100 a month plus expenses, Thomas A. Edison in 1879 hired a colorful adventurer named Frank McLaughlin to go west as a prospector. A few months later, McLaughlin triumphantly returned to the inventor's laboratory in Menlo Park, N. J. "On his shirt bosom and fingers sparkled glittering stones," recalled one of Edison's associates. These were only the tangible parts of his new trappings. In addition, McLaughlin "now wore the title of major which he acquired somewhere west of Omaha."
