This project involved the removal of the top of an old water supply reservoir tank for the City of Lead, SD by explosives. The general contract called for the removal of the concrete top without damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. The option of a rock hammer was eliminated, due to the possibility of an unpredictable collapse damaging the sides or floor of the reservoir. Different blasting options were discussed between the primary contractor and the blasting contractor, along with the pros and cons of each. The primary contractor settled on the option of drilling the structure for blasting versus using shaped charges

"Image analysis techniques are widely used for blast fragmentation measurement, and various commercial packages are available for this purpose. These packages are very versatile and serve as a useful tool for optimization of blasting practice. But many times, the results provided by image analysis techniques do not match with sieved and predicted data. This leads to the suggestion that understanding the limitations of this technology is as important as understanding its usefulness and versatility.A study was conducted in two stages:(a) Comparison between the results of image analysis and screened data using laboratory scale muck piles.(b) Comparison between predicted (Kuz-Ram) and measured (Image analysis) blast fragmentation results for several bench blasts.During laboratory work, muck piles with known size distributions were analyzed with the help of image analysis technique. A disparity was observed between the sieved and measured results because the image analysis techniques cannot accurately determine the % of fi nes in the muck. During fi eld work about fourteen blasts were monitored. It was observed that predicted (Kuz-Ram) results rarely matched with measured (Image analysis) results. The Kuz-Ram curves were modifi ed by changing the rock factor so that the Kuz-Ram and Image analysis curves match in the vicinity of the 50% passing size. The pairs of curves (modifi ed Kuz-Ram and Image analysis) were divided into three categories depending upon their differences in the coarse and fi nes ranges. The blast design parameters affecting the difference between the pair of curves have been outlined. The suggestions have been made to better utilize the image analysis system."

Trail blasters for the National Park Service (NPS) live and work in remote mountain terrain throughout the western states, where any support or resupply may be sporadic and ditlicult and mountain weather affects every activity. Mechanical “aids” are the pick, shovel, rock-bar, wheelbarrow, and a Pionjar or Cobra dritl. The blaster is usually faced with an extraordinary range of work, t?om delay blasts in weathered rock using driiole depths of 18” (46cm) to as little as 4” (1 Ocm), through reducing boulders and talus fields to useable tread, blasting stumps, snags and log-jams, to the explosive disintegration and casting of animal czcasses. One day he/she might provide a 500cf (14 cu meter) anchor excavation for a suspension bridge, the next day directionally fall 60” (1.5m) diameter snags in a camp area, and the following day blast a 3-foot-wide (1 meter) tread bench across a steep bedrock slope. To be effective, the blaster must design each and every blast around desired end result, crew and public safety, maximizing effective use of limited quantities of explosive, and the minimnation of environmental effects. Since almost all drillhole blasting occurs in the weathered zone of the rock, blasting is more the art than the science of judging rock density, hardness, cohesion and prefracturing, and selecting explosives, drill and delay patterns, and loading techniques responsive to those conditions. For these reasons the NPS issues its own Blaster’s License, with a basic requirement of at least 40 hours of NPS blaster training and 3 years of supervised Blaster in-Training experience. The focus of this pre-license requirement is on safety and using explosives as a precision tool, versus just “blowing things up”.

Back-break induced from blasting is a concern in open pit metal mining because it compromises the conditions of the pit’s final walls. Final walls that have excessive blast induced damage commonly require extra attention and can often lead to increased cycle times. Most importantly however, the safety conditions of a back-broken region can be significantly compromised and it must be addressed to prevent injury and/or damage to equipment. This occasionally results in the necessity to alter mine plans to prevent an incident from occurring in a back-broken region which can be costly to the mine.

During the summer of 1980, a field project was carried out to determine the stability of the beautiful and dramatic natural limestone pinnacles (locally termed "Hoodoos") at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, when subjected to ground motions and airblasts resulting from proposed strip coal mine blasting. The concern arose from environmental considerations associated with the proposed development of a large coal strip mine which would approach within 4 miles of the park. The pinnacles range up to 150 ft in height and are quite slender, producing a fragile appearance. The remoteness and ruggedness of the area required a field camp, and 4-wheel drive vehicles, helicopters, and snowcats for support. Portable magazines were necessary to store the more than 7 tons of blasting agents and explosives required. In conducting the blasting, great attention was paid to environmental impacts. In the field, a target pinnacle was selected and instrumented with mechanical strain gages, and research seismographs that required helicopter placement.

In this paper vibratory crack response is compared to that produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils induced by natural events. These natural phenomena include changes in the water table, changes in soil moisture, and formation of ice lenses to name a few. Previous papers have compared vibratory responses of cracks to atmospheric effects such as those produced by the passage of weather fronts and daily changes in temperature and humidity. Periodicity of these atmospheric effects is on the order of a day to half a dozen days. Thus it is possible to observe atmospheric effects with measurement over a period of weeks to several months. On the other hand, crack response produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils occurs over a period of many months and/or may be seasonal in nature if not longer in the case of drought. Thus its measurement requires long periods of observation (many months to significant fractions of a year) or observation during critical seasons. Since it occurs over long periods of time, its observation may be obscured by climatologically induced crack response. These soil volume changes are compared with climatic data to describe the correlative nature of crack response in time with the soil volume change phenomena and likely climatic causes.

This paper presents an investigation about how the motions of blast induced vibration waves were affected by the presence of the fault planes. This study was carried out at Espey Open- Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, ground vibration components were measured for 8 shots using 9 vibration monitors, considering the direction of the fault. Measurement stations were located around the fault line that intersects the open-pit mine in the north-south direction and on different benches along the fault plane. Then, the data of the vibration components obtained from the 77 recorded events were analyzed and the results were presented.

Hong Kong is ranked as the world’s third most important international financial hub and attracts significant growth and development annually. The city is also known as the world's most vertical city, the most common view from your window in Hong Kong city centre is probably the window of another 30 storey skyscraper. The increasing demand for real estate in this bustling Metropolis has placed immense pressures on its transportation infrastructure because whilst the construction continuously grows upward with larger and larger skyscrapers, it leaves the transportation planners with very little choice but to go underground. As a first world city, interrupting daily business operations is simply not an option; however, of even greater concern is the safety of these 8 million residents. Blasting Regulations are under the strict control of the Mines Division showing zero tolerance to the breaching of safety standards. The Ho Man Tin Station (HOM) excavation, a part of the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) project situated in Hong Kong began in June 2012 and is one such project that is under strict regulations from the Mines Division. The HOM project is a cross cut interchange station between the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) and Shatin Central Link (SCL).

In 1998, the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section of the International Society of Explosives Engineers formed a working group to collect and compile a list of regulations limiting ground vibrations from blasting. The goal was to locate those countries, states, provinces, and cities that have such regulations, identify which governmental body enforces them, and determine what limits on ground vibrations are imposed upon the blasting operations. In the course of this study, data was collected from over 60 jurisdictions where peak particle velocity restrictions range from non-existent to very stringent. Some of the regulations were found to be based upon standards grounded in good science, while others possess little or no technical justification. This presentation will summarize the findings of the subcommittee, focusing primarily on what the limits are, which type of blasting operations must adhere to them, and to what structures they apply. The degree to which these regulations are based upon valid scientific and engineering research will be discussed. The underwater explosions have been used for several decades for the determination of energy content of explosives. This test method is the only one by which shock, fly rock and total energy can be measured separately. It enables to develop the energy content of explosives for different purposes; the military high explosives should contain more shock energy whereas the fly rock energy is very important feature for the blasting explosives. The purpose of this study was to establish a test place for the underwater experiments in an old water filled open pit, to estimate the repeatability of the energy measurements, to calculate the standard deviations and to compare the total energy content of commercial explosives to the theoretical values calculated by the thermo dynamical program. The test method seems to work quite well especially for the homogeneous explosives. The difference between the energy content of theoretically calculated and measured values for the homogeneous emulsion explosives was about -3% and for the dynamite about -5%. The energy difference for the unhomogeneous ANFO was detected to be -19%. The diameter of the charge was 15 cm and it was obviously too small for ANFO to detonate ideally. On the basis of the test results this test method seems to fit best for the cap sensitive, completely homogeneous, spherical charges whose masses are big enough and which are initiated from the centre of the charge. The underwater explosions as a test method is the only one which can separate shock, bubble and total energies from each other and therefore makes it possible to develop the properties of explosives for different purposes which is very important feature of this method.
