"This paper describes a ventilation project at the Wassa gold mine in Ghana. Golden Star (Wassa) (GSWL), a subsidiary of Golden Star Resources, owns and operates the mine. Golden Star holds a 90% interest in GSWL, while the Ghanaian Government holds the remaining 10% ownership, earning a 5% royalty on the gross revenue of GSWL’s gold production. Construction of the underground mine began in mid-2015 and pre-commercial production started in June 2016. Commercial production from the underground mine was achieved in January 2017. This paper describes the ventilation studies performed to support the initial development and production at the mine. The initial ventilation design included four, parallel surface exhaust fans. Future designs will include booster fans, new primary fans, and additional connections to surface. The paper describes the long-term ventilation planning goals and expectations as the mine achieves a production of 4,000 tpd with truck haulage to surface.INTRODUCTIONThe Wassa Gold Mine is located in the southern portion of the Ashanti Greenstone Gold Belt in Ghana, northwest of Tarkwa as shown in Figure 1. The mine has been in production as an open pit since 1998, with some minor disruptions, but the surface minable reserves have become exhausted and the mine started a transition to an underground operation in 2015. The underground mine was initially developed with twin decline accesses extending from the base of the open pit to the mining areas. The mining method selected was sub-level open stoping with cemented rock backfill. The original production level for the mine was 2,500 tpd with ore and waste transported by trucks hauling in the ramps to surface. In 2017 the production goal was set to increase to approximately 4,000 tpd. This resulted in an increase in the truck haulage fleet in addition to a significant increase in ventilation requirements. This paper describes the ventilation upgrades at the mine as it transitioned from a surface to an underground operation and the adjustments the ventilation system needed to make in order to accommodate a significant increase in production"

"IntroductionIn 1879, when the Dominion government initiated its controversial program of industrial promotion, iron smelting in Canada was limited to one company producing coke iron on the mainland of Nov a Scotia and three small charcoal blast furnaces in Quebec. There was no steel production. By the eve of the first great war, iron and steel were being produced in very large quantities, the companies active in 1879 had disappeared and new centres of integrated iron and rolled steel production at Hamilton, Sydney and Sault Ste. Marie had come to resemble the industry as we know it today.The most dramatic change was that at Sydney, Nova Scotia, where in the early 1900s, two steelmaking companies established works. The Sydney developments have been explained as the result of resource discovery and technical change. W.J. Donald, in his authoritative account of the Canadian iron and steel industry, observes:""The most rapid growth of the Canadian iron and steel industry has occured since 1897... The remarkable growth has been caused largely by the new conditions of the industry. The discovery and use of Newfoundland ores, together with the availability of Cape Breton coal, has made the Nova Scotia industry not only possible but profitable ... It is a safe conclusion that the Canadian industry would not have been an important one, had it not been for the discovery of the Michipicoten and especially the Wabana (Newfoundland) ores""Donald also argues that metallurgical progress had been necessary to render the ores valuable,""Newfoundland ores ... contain a considerable amount of phosphorus, and were made available for steel-making by recent inventions.""The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Donald's story. It will be argued that the origin of steel -making at Sydney is somewhat more complicated than Donald has indicated. The difficulty with Newfoundland ore extended beyond its phosphorus content and a resolution required more than the basic open hearth furnace identified by Donald. Moreover metallurgical change was only one of several developments necessary to induce industrial investment at Sydney. Surprisingly, however, the discovery of iron ore in the late nineteenth century does not appear to be part of the explanation."

"When elephants fight, it's the grass that gets trampled". It is becoming increasingly evident that the federal and provincial governments are awakening to the fact that their vigorous scramble for a "fair share" of mineral revenues which kicked off in 1974 has done considerable harm to the Canadian mining industry. Recent public statements made by government officials, particularly at the recently held annual convention of the Prospectors and Developers Association, would indicate that there is a general consensus in the government sector that changes must be made to the mining tax system. However, there is no evidence as yet that there is any agreement among the various governments as to what form these changes should take , who should make them , or when. It would seem to be worthwhile at this time to reflect on where the Canadian mining industry has been vis-a-vis taxes and "where it is at ". This article is based on a recent address given by R. D. Brown, of Price Waterhouse & Co., Toronto, at the annual convention of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in Denver , Colorado.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents two new options for hydrocyclone control. Volume split control using a control valve in the overflow is applied for the stabilization of separation results at changing feed conditions. Controlled water injection to the conical part of the cyclone leads to the reduction of fine particles in the underflow. Hydrocyclone monitoring in both cases is performed by optical sensors that indicate the spray angle of the underflow. Applications in mineral processing for desliming, classification in closed-circuit grinding, and dewatering are demonstrated.

The Altair process digests ilmenite concentrate in high-chloride HC1 solution, with complete dissolution of titanium and iron. The Fe(III) ions are reduced to the ferrous form, and the solution is cooled to produce crystalline ferrous chloride. Titanium is transferred by solvent extraction into a purified, concentrated Ti stream, which is spray-hydrolyzed to produce TiO2 hydrate. The hydrate is further calcined with additives to generate a high-quality pigment. All the chloride streams are recycled. In the original flowsheet, the iron chloride is pyrohydrolyzed by spray roasting to regenerate 18% HCl, which is subsequently converted to HC1 gas and water by pressure-swing distillation. A modified flowsheet includes an alternative to iron chloride spray roasting, producing more concentrated HCl and decreasing the amount of solution to be distilled. Improvements in digestion, solvent extraction and final pigment production are also introduced. A 100 t/y pilot plant is being built and will test the new concepts and confirm the overall water, acid and impurity balances of the process.

Gold leaching from a commercial cyanide-amenable gold ore was studied at 25°C using sodium bisulfide-hydrogen sulfide solutions containing elemental sulfur. Gold extraction from the ore using 0.55 M NaSH, 4.1 atm (60 PSI) H2S, 1 g/L S8 and 26% solids by weight was about as good as the best extraction obtained by cyanidation. Maximum extraction was achieved in roughly 48 hours. Sulfur dissolves in the bisulfide solutions to form a mixture of polysulfides. Simple speciation calculations indicate that gold solubility as bisulfide complexes should be roughly ten times higher than in the absence of added zerovalent sulfur. The principal bisulfide complex is believed to be [Au(HS)2]-. Gold dissolution is favoured by increasing HS- concentration and by increasing H25 pressure. Polysulfide complexes of gold are also likely to be formed, and may contribute substantially to gold leaching. Two experiments using pure gold were also performed. Up to 100 mg/L gold was dissolved in 140 hours using 0.55 M NaSH, 1 g/L added elemental sulfur and 6.2 atm H2S.

In this section of the province only the most meagre of surveys have been made and because these are not sufficient to determine with any degree of accuracy even the total forest area, the information presented in this paper is not complete. Area: -The area south of the Canadian National, and served by the Pacific Great Eastern, is roughly 38,000. square miles, 30,000 of which is classed as productive. This is approximately equal to the productive area of Norway, or half of Finland-or of 30 per cent of Sweden. It is larger than that of either Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Eliminating from the productive area 3600 square miles of grass-land and areas capable of agricultural development, 26,000 square miles (16,600,000 acres) remains as absolute forest-land, as compared with the 55,000,000 acres of Sweden, the 37,500,000 acres of Finland, the 17,000,000 acres of Norway, and the 7,600,000 acres of Austria.

"IntroductionMine drainage, surface. drainage and process liquors are the principal mine and mill effluents. The quantity and quality of these flows varies according to mineralogy, type and scale of mining, the process, tailing disposal, local ground conditions and climate.Typical contaminants remaining after solids sedimentation are colloidal or semi-colloidal particles, acids, alkalis, metals in solution, cyanides and thiosalts. Environmental regulations and guidelines have been issued in detail by the appropriate government agencies and will not be reviewed here. Revisions and additions are being made as our comprehension and abilities increase. Some contaminants of consequence have not been specifically regulated as practical treatment technology has not been identified. Thiosalts fall into that category as do the derivatives of the first stage of cyanide oxidation - cyanates.Most mining activities have present or foreseeable water treatment requirements. Because process economics can be adversely skewed by the environmental factor, the acknowledged objective of every operation must be to identify and anticipate those requirements.The evaluation and selection of water treatment techniques for mine-mill applications is complicated by the fact that most mine-mill effluents are high volume, dilute and chemically complex systems. Treatment processes applicable to most contaminants are: chemical or biological oxidation; neutralization and/or precipitation; liquid/solids separation. Other processes such as ion exchange, electro-deposition, foam fractionation, freeze crystallization and reverse osmosis offer the possibility of selective removal or concentration of contaminents. The latter tediniques, representing a slightly higher level of technology, are less suited to the large, low value flows usually encountered in the mine environment."

Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a ?plateau? and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have ?exemplary? safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA?s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization?s mindset? What characterizes these organizations? decision making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensive research since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters. Their huge focus on safety, the achievement of lofty goals and celebration of safety successes led to ?mindset? that they are leaders in safety, protected by an extraordinary safety system and that their safety incident figures indicated a truly world-class safety performance. The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002 and, prior to ratification, committed to equitable distribution of the burden of implementation. The Federal government's Large Final Emitters group is working with industry to develop covenants that will consider the unique nature of the company's operations and not unreasonably burden any one sector or company. Ensuring equitable distribution must consider local, national and international issues. From a Canadian iron ore producers perspective, the fact that most of the iron ore production in the world is in countries that have no Kyoto commitment is a critical issue. Another issue unique to this sector is the increased addition of fluxing agents in iron ore pellet production which has shifted some process related greenhouse gas emissions from steel producers to iron ore producers. While the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol are primarily environmental, the economic implications for Canadian industry are not trivial. For decades Canadian companies have been actively improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to maintain a global competitive position. Production of iron ore pellets is an energy intensive process and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC) is the largest Canadian producer. In 2002 IOCC identified energy and Kyoto Protocol implementation as critical risk factors for their organization and appointed a full time Energy Manager. In January 2003, IOCC initiated a comprehensive process for identifying energy cost reduction opportunities and established an Energy Master plan. This process included:

"The Thyssen Mining Group of Companies has successfully applied ground freezing technology to numerous projects throughout Europe and North America for over 100 years. Recently, the aspect of data acquisition and data verification has received greater focus.Thyssen Mining has been engaged in several relatively deep shaft sinking projects over the past five (5) years, all of which have required ground freezing to successfully sink through water bearing rock. To safely and economically sink through a quantity of water similar to Saskatchewan’s Potash Mines, it is imperative to understand freeze wall thickness and growth rate.Critical to understanding freeze wall thickness and growth rate, is the collection of accurate data as well as the interpretation of those data. The data can then be utilized to gain a better understanding of the freeze wall growth rate in active projects as well as to provide data to be utilized in modeling for future projects.This paper elaborates on the installation and operation of the data acquisition system utilized at the Newmont Leeville project, Nevada’s first frozen shaft project. THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit. That is to say, the benefits of technological progress, mass production, and low unit costs must be promptly passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices-giving more for each dollar.

Underground mine developments, such as haulage drifts and cross cuts, play a vital role in providing access to ore extraction areas for mine production. The stability of mine developments is thus of crucial importance during the life of a mine plan. Many Canadian mines use longhole mining methods or one of its variants. These methods require access to the orebody through mine developments such as haulage drifts and cross cuts on multiple levels. This paper examines the stability of mine development access intersections with respect to the planned mining sequence. A case study, the #1 Shear East orebody at Vale?s Garson Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, is presented. A three-dimensional, elastoplastic, finite difference model (FLAC 3D) was created for a development intersection situated 1.5 km below ground surface. The stability, or performance of the intersection, is evaluated in terms of the strength-to-stress ratio. The ratio threshold is set at 1.4 for temporary openings. Unsatisfactory performance is defined as a strength-to-stress ratio less than this threshold value. The performance of the intersection stability is evaluated at various modelled mining stages and the probabilistic method of analysis is then invoked to study the probability of unsatisfactory performance of the intersection. The results are presented and categorized with respect to probability, instability, and mining stage.

"Cobalt based super alloy stellite 6 was weld cladded on AISI 304 L stainless steel using SMAW process in order to improve the wear resistance for tyre crusher blades. Microstructure characterization and micro hardness testing was performed on stellite 6 cladding. The suitable parameters viz. 80 Amp current with arc weaving technique was selected by performing bead on plate experiment were further used for depositing multipass multilayer cladding to achieve full filler chemistry at the top surface. Further GTAW process was used for re-melting the top surface of the cladding. Comparative evaluation of the claddings showed that TIG re-melting resulted in increased microhardness and wear resistance in comparison to as cladded specimens even with lesser deposition of material. It was observed that TIG re-melting improved the hardness from 603 HV0.5 kg to 712 HV0.5 kg. Micro structures of stellite 6 contained cobalt solid solution matrix along with inter dendrite chromium carbides which resulted in the increased micro hardness values. Pin on disc abrasion tests were carried out at room temperature and the worn out surfaces were characterized using SEM and EDS.INTRODUCTIONThe crusher blades are used in many industries for crushing various types of material and its wider applications in tyre rubber crushing mills, metal-powder crushers industries etc. Most of the crusher blades are damaged by the wear and impact loading conditions. It is because of metal to metal abrasion and the temperature also plays a vital role in blunting the cutting edges of these blades. The wear is the major cause which leads to loss of material and thus the productivity that can never be recovered (Kotechi et al., 1992). The wear can be reduced by coating of various super alloys which could reduce the behavior of metal degradation even in aggressive environments. Cladding of cheaper low alloyed material with expensive superalloys to enhance the performance of components at low cost has been investigated by many scholars (Deng et al., 2010, Kennametal, 2007, Lolla et al., 2014, Singhet al., 2014, J.N et al., 2003, Ramkumar et al., 2012). Many researchers have reported that cladding is an application of build-up deposits of specialized alloys to resist abrasion, high temperature corrosion and impact loadings. Cladding is used for providing required mechanical strength properties as well as inhibition of oxidation and other corrosive degradation. Coatings are used to protect the heat affected areas like tubes of fluidized bed combustor etc. (Kirchbner et al., 2008, Wang et al., 1994, Hocking et al., 1993, Ananthapadmanabhan et al., 1991, Staia et al., 2001). Coating techniques are widely used for the protection of turbine engine and boiler tubes against high temperature corrosion attack, power generation equipment, chemical process equipment, aircraft engines, pulp and paper processing equipment, bridges, rollers and concrete reinforcements, orthopedics and dental, land-based and marine turbines, ships. Coatings of stellite 6 are widely used in steam turbine blades and boiler tubes for power generation because of an excellent combination of impact, wear and other properties. It can maintain its properties even at high temperature and in harsh environments (Kobayashiet al., 1999, Alam et al., 2009, Munehru et al., 2009). The loading and unloading conditions experienced by the material may induce the surface cracks which lead to its breakage and leaving large pits in the surface (Meng et al., 1995). "Syncrude Canada Ltd. is developing new concepts in lease-closure landscape design for its Oil Sands Leases 17 and 22 in northeastern Alberta. Closure planning is becoming an integral part of the planning cycles and of the lease operation. By incorporating closure planning into the day-to-day operation, the company will achieve acceptable lease closure in an economical manner. Ultimately, Syncrude will achieve lower operating costs through innovation in mine planning and a reduction in residual liabilities.New concepts being evaluated for lease-closure landscape design include: designing for closure, use of landforms and natural analogs, self-armouring bouldery ground, robustness in design, landform grading, terrain analysis of reclaimed land, geotechnical hazard assessments, choices in closure design timeframes, passive maintenance, determining post-closure monitoring goals, engineering tailings, engineering other substrates, use of test plots and field demonstrations, geomorphologic monitoring of reclaimed lands, defining closure goals, and visiting other mines. These concepts are being formalized under the new discipline of Landscape Engineering."

"Zonation patterns are welt developed in the mafic metavolcanic rocks that host epigenetic quartz-carbonate-gold vein mineralization at the Hollinger-McIntyre deposit. Carbonate alteration assemblages are strongly zoned about mineralization. Proceeding inward from background greenschist facies rocks to alteration envelopes enclosing individual veins, the following assemblages are observed:Assemblage I-quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote-actinolite-(calcite)Assemblage II-quartz-albite-chlorite-calcite-epidoteAssemblage III-quartz-ankerite-sericite-(chlorite-calcite)Assemblage IV-quartz-albite-ankerite-sericiteLithogeochemical zoning is equally well developed as variations in whole-rock abundances ofAs, Au, Ba, Rb, and Sb. As and Ba form the most useful zonation patterns, outlining individual ore zones as well as broader trends of mineralization.Gas chromatographic analyses of fluid inclusions in the quartz-carbonate veins indicate that the mineralizing fluid was an H20-C02 mixture. Locally, CH4-rich fluid inclusions are associated with graphitic and/or carbonaceous wallrocks. Fluid inclusions in ore-bearing veins have higher CO2 contents than those in non-ore veins. Extensive sampling and analyses of veins from the area surrounding the deposit reveals a well developed zonation of CO2 contents about the main zone of mineralization. Low CO2 levels (1-2 mole%) in veins are peripheral to the deposit and increase to over 12 mole% in mineralized zones.The observed zoning of the carbonate alteration assemblages is a result of the addition of CO2 to the wallrock, which is consistent with the zoning of CO2 in the fluid inclusions.The zoning patterns delineated in this study are useful in exploration both on a deposit scale and on the scale of individual ore zones."

"Melt quality is crucial for both continuous and shape casting of light alloys and in order to improve it, removal of excessive inclusions, accumulated impurities and unwanted gases becomes necessary. To address this problem, a new multi-purpose high shear liquid metal treatment technology, based on intensive melt shearing by a rotor/stator unit, has been developed. The device ensures achieving uniform temperature and chemical composition and an efficient dispersion of gas and solid phases in the melt with minimal disturbance of melt surface, and can be used, among other things, for de-gassing and de-ironing of Al-alloy melts. Efficient degassing is achieved by dispersing each argon bubble into many small ones, which significantly increases the overall surface area of the bubbles and the time they remain in the melt capturing hydrogen before reaching the surface. This allows using much lower inert gas flow and mixing times than conventional rotary degassing. When applied to Al-alloy scrap, with accumulated iron, the high shear melt treatment speeds up the nucleation and growth of primary Fe-rich intermetallic particles, allowing a faster removal rate. Therefore it reduces processing times, increasing recycling productivity, and facilitates full metal circulation of secondary Al-alloys.INTRODUCTION Aluminium and magnesium alloys are widely considered in various industrial sectors for the purpose of weight saving (Polmear, 1995). In particular, they are used in the automotive sector, where components are mostly manufactured by high pressure die casting (HPDC) because of its simplicity and relatively low cost, but efficiency and mechanical properties are quite low compared with other processes. To date, the main focus to overcome this problem has been for improving the HPDC machinery (Dahle, 2001) but little attention has been paid to the opportunities of controlling the nature and quality of the molten metal supplied to the die. In this way, liquid metal treatment, which involves a variety of physical and/or chemical processing methods to improve melt quality prior casting, is crucial for both continuous and shape casting products."

THE views and observations expressed herein on this old but constantly recurring question are our own, no effort having been made to align them with standard texts. Therefore, while they may find general acceptance amongst fellow engineers, they must stand as personal opinions and as such are open to debate and discussion. In order properly to consider the subject, it should first be 'set in proper perspective. Why are Prospects Examined? Prospects are examined to determine whether they may contain economic concentrations of metals or minerals, the legitimate mining business being run, pretty largely, to make money. Next to food and clothing, modern civilization is based on metals, with which are included in this discussion minerals, oils, and fuels. A constant and increasing demand for the common metals requires the location of replacements for depleted orebodies, while the use and appreciation of new metals brings increasing demand for them. Aluminium is a good example of a metal which has, within recent years, made great progress. Today, we are becoming increasingly aware of magnesium, chromium, tungsten, thallium, and other lesser known, metals.

The start-up is the most critical phase of the cell life, as an uncontrolled start-up could lead to early infiltrations, instabilities, and in some cases to the cell death. Lots of efforts are put to increase the lifespan of cells, as it has a major impact on both the operating costs and the environmental footprint of the aluminum industry. Obviously, a true size test on a cell is a resources- and time-consuming approach that could be used only to validate mature concepts. Moreover, numerical modelling is a low-cost and versatile tool capable to test a wide range of potential ideas and concepts. In the present article, a thermal electrical mechanical slice model is presented. This model describes the preheating and bath periods of a P155 aluminum cell start-up, as used at the Grande Baie smelter. The impact of sodium diffusion and expansion is also included in the model. This model will be useful to study different problematical issues such as the global behaviour of lining materials, shell and cradle deformations during start-up and several start-up scenarios. Such a model will also be able to answer some interrogations regarding early infiltrations and their impact on the lifespan of the electrolysis cell.

Recently, the mining industry has become one of the leading target markets for the technology industry as they need to innovate in their productive processes in order to boost productivity, reduce operation costs, increase operation safety, and improve the quality of life of their workers. This work presents the technological developments that HighService has done in different stages of the mining productive processes to include robotic manipulators in their automation solutions as well as the development of new equipment and sensors. The robotic technology integration is presented in different applications such as handling and selection of cathodes in E-W machines, automation of base plate maintenance, automation of cathode stripping machine, and multi-tools handler for liner bolt replacement in SAG mill liner maintenance activities. The proposed solutions show technical and economical viability with low initial investment and short implementation period of six (6) to ten (10) months. The results have been validated in plant, obtaining higher production rates and availability.
