Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. air-lift and equipped with tapered tubing of proper design, we would have a gas input consumption of about 2500 cu. ft. per bbl., which at 3 to 4c. per 1000 cu. ft. would be 7 1/2 to l0c, per bbl., and there would be very infrequent loss of production due to stoppages. It has been demonstrated that with efficient design of air-gas lift, the production of wells can be increased much beyond that obtained with the former type of air-lift employed; also that small wells can be operated by air-lift with tapered tubing at a cost that places this method in competition with beam pumps in many fields. The next step in conservation that the writer expects to have an opportunity to demonstrate is that of restoring the pressure in a pool and producing by air-gas lift all of the oil possible to lift economically. This combined operation is probably the method toward which we shall eventually be working in recovering the maximum quantity of oil from pools where the oil is recovered through bore holes. General Discussion on the Air-gas Lift H. P. Porter, Tulsa, 0kla.—The papers presented at this meeting contain a great amount of valuable information. Wonderful progress has been shown in the development of air and gas-lifts. There has been nearly everything brought out that touches upon the subject. The real point that is lacking is exact knowledge of the velocity with in the flow column which will produce the best effect—that is the thing we must know more about. Velocity in Gas-lift Flow In other lines of industry the matter of velocity of fluids in pipe lines has been well analyzed and there are known laws by which to calculate velocity of flow; for instance, in irrigation work large pumps are designed with intake pipos to employ an intake velocity of 4 ft. per scc. By reduced cross-sect'ion the velocity is increased rapidly as it enters the pump and the discharge rate is at 12 ft. per src., which in turn is reduced in the discharge column to 4 ft. per sec. Crushed coal, grain and granular material is found to be best conveyed by air when a pneumatic conveyor is employed at 100 ft. per sec. As in the design of a pumping plant or a pneumatic conveyor, the velocity at the lower end of the column in the flowing well must be controlled within certain limits for best results. Mr. Griswold, I believe, stated that they had velocity as low as 15 it. per scc. and from that up to 78 ft. per sec. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lewis showed an ideal flow column showing how the velocity increased as the fluid was carried up the column, hut did not give any figures as to the velocity. It would be well to take that sort of a diagram to establish an ideal velocity at the lower or intake end, and then calculate the velocity from expansion of the gas as it goes up. It may be that the, ideal intake velocity would vary, depending on the depth of the well, the quantity of liquid to be handled or the pressure which it may be desired to hold. The subject is one that might be worth much research.

BECAUSE of the wide use of platinum in industry and research, the physical properties of this metal, including its vapor pressure, have been studied in some detail.' The other members of the palladium-platinum group of metals have not been studied as extensively, and only qualitative information is available on the vapor pressure of palladium. Data given in literature by Vines1 and Brewer2 on the vapor pressure of palladium are based on the qualitative observations by Holborn and Austin3 and Crookes4 on the rate of volatilization of palladium filaments in various atmospheres. The general observation that palladium is the most volatile metal of the palladium-platinum metal group was corroborated by Bell, Love and Normand who studied the separation of isotopes of the platinum-group metals by a mass spectrometric method. We have measured the vapor pressure of palladium using the Knudsen effusion technique. In this work, the effusion vessel was suspended from a quartz-fiber microbalance into an induction furnace, and the amount of vapor effusing from the vessel was determined by direct weighing of the vessel during the measured heating times. This technique has been described in a report from this laboratory." The vapor pressure of palladium was calculated from these measurements using the equation P...... = 17.14 -W- (77m)'u [1] a t where ? is the weight loss in grams of vapor of molecular weight m from a vessel having an orifice of a sq cm, during t sec. The derivation of this equation from kinetic theory has been described in a previous report from this laboratory: as well as in texts discussing the kinetic theory of gases.%" Test Vessel—In the search for a suitable material for the effusion vessel, it was found that tantalum reacted with palladium metal to form intermetallic compounds, and graphite was readily dissolved in palladium metal to form what appeared to be a liquid phase at a temperature several hundred degrees below the melting point of palladium. On cooling, the graphite gathered into spherical balls in the palladium, with crystals extending radially from the center of these balls, some of which were a millimeter or more in diameter. However, palladium metal vapor did not attack the graphite vessel, so graphite could be used where it did not contact condensed palladium. Tungsten did not appear to react with palladium vapor or molten palladium at its melting point, but it was not convenient to use a tungsten-vapor pressure vessel because of the difficulty of fabricating this metal. Since the vapor-pressure range to be studied (10 2 to 10 ' mm) did not appear to extend above the melting point of palladium, a combination of tungsten and graphite served to provide a very satisfactory effusion vessel. The lower half of the graphite vessel was lined with some strips of tungsten foil and the sample of palladium consisting of a coil of sheet was placed in the tungsten liner; in this way, no contamination of the palladium by carbon occurred. INTRODUCTION The development of refining processes involving gas injection into liquid metals has seen the evolution of a variety of designs [I]. During the last few years or so the top, bottom and side blown processes have, essentially, been combined to produce a series of mixed gas blowing schemes (eg. the LBE [2,3] and LD-OB processes [4,5]). Although, a variety of mixed gas blowing processes have been carefully engineered and recorded operational experience now attests to their effectiveness, optimising their design and operational performance is another matter. Detailed process analysis of such operations is impeded by the complex nature of the physical and chemical processes involved: . fluid flow behaviour of the liquid metal and injected gases, . chemical reactions in the vessel, . mass and heat transfer within the fluid phases in the vessel, . influence of the geometry (eg. location of the tuyeres, etc.), . monitoring the operational performance. By and large, design and operating parameters evolve from a combination of laboratory scale experiments, pilot plant work and, of course, practical engineering experience. Conventionally, the gas-liquid system used to model the industrial process is air-water, for a number of valid reasons including – . visual demonstration plus geometric and (to some extent) dynamic similarity, . the fact that the system demonstrates, at least, qualitatively many of the complex features of gas injection - interaction between the gas and the liquid - the nature of the gas flow behaviour - qualitative indications of mass transfer rates Important experimental contributions to the understanding of gas liquid systems include the work of Brimacombe [6], Wraith [7], T.Robertson [8], D.Robertson [9], Guthrie [10] and Szekely [11] (these references provide starting points to identify the major published work in this area). Although air-water systems have been instrumental in providing a great deal of qualitative insight into the fluid flow behaviour of the processes, reliable quantitative predictions are more problematic. A number of workers (notably Brimacombe and colleagues [6, 12])have demonstrated that different gas-liquid systems can lead to wide variations in behaviour. Other limitations of physical modelling include the assumptions of isothermal flow, scale- up of turbulent flow behaviour and the inability to directly include the effects of chemical reactions. The above limitations in physical modelling, therefore, yield a natural role for mathematical modelling provided that it can be made comprehensive enough whilst remaining cost-effective. The major physical processes involved in gas injection systems may be summarised as . behaviour of the gas envelope structure in moving through the liquid metal . the global movement of the liquid metal . momentum interaction between the liquid metal and the injected gas . heat transfer and mass exchange via the chemical react ions. The behaviour of gas envelopes forming at a tuyere and then moving through the liquid has been investigated thoroughly by a large number of workers. Such models are generally based upon simple physic- al concepts derived from visual observation. An early model by Davidson and Schuler (DS), based upon a force balance between the liquid inertia and a combination of the bouyancy and momentum forces on the envelope, has proved to be a useful tool in predicting bubble volumes at detachment [13]. The DS model has been successfully modified in a number of ways [14-17] to cope with heat transfer and reactive transfer rates, etc. Furthermore, the basic ideas summarised above have also been confirmed on industrial converters by both Guthrie [I8] and Brimacombe [19]. Models have also been developed to predict the behaviour of the "chemical" component of some gas-liquid systems. However, one thing is clear; all gas-liquid reactive systems are governed by the degree to which effective mixing occurs. As such, the processes are dominated by the behaviour of the heat and mass exchange of the two phase fluid flow system. The observations and data presented in this paper are the result of extensive study of flowing wells, most of which were in the Maracaibo Lake Basin of Venezuela. The Lago Petroleum Corpn. had extensive production in this area, gas-oil ratios were low, and the problem was to determine whether by careful handling of the wells with respect to flowing conditions and by conserving the gas, the oil production of the wells could be maintained by natural flow until it had declined to a rate which could be handled with an ordinary working barrel, thereby avoiding the high cost of gas-lift equipment installation in the lake bed. The problem was complicated by the nature of the wells themselves. Production is from soft, comparatively unconsolidated sands, necessitating screen pipe in all wells. It was not only necessary to keep the wells flowing but to keep them flowing without heading, as the release of pressure upon making a head brought large quantities of sand into the wells, sanding them up or possibly cutting out the screen pipe. In furtherance of the plan of keeping wells flowing as long as possible, each well was equipped with a casinghead and tubinghead recording pressure gage, and an oil and gas separator set. About one-half of the wells were equipped with gas meters. All wells were tubed before bringing into production. Frequently individual gages were taken on each well. A large scale chart was plotted for each well, showing daily oil production, gas production, gas-oil ratio, tubinghead pressure and casinghead pressure. Any deviation from the normal was immediately checked and the condition remedied if possible. Theory of Flowing Wells Based upon considerable study of these records, it is believed that the flow of a well actuated by gas is mainly a problem in velocity, a certain minimum velocity in the flow string being necessary for the gas to carry the oil. If this minimum velocity is not obtained the oil drops back and the well heads or goes dead. The point of minimum velocity is of course at the bottom of the tubing, where the gas is under the highest pressure and therefore occupies the least volume. Some years ago when the success of the gas-lift at Seminole was so pronounced, there was considerable broadcasting of the statement that

THE peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This .falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to, has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas.

At the present time, the designer of dies for metal powder pressing is handicapped by relative ignorance of stress distribution and frictional effects at the interior surface of the die. Unckell was the first to develop a method for the study of wall friction. He used three Brinell balls on which the die rested during pressing. The total frictional wall force was determined by the size of impression these balls left on a soft metal plate. Since the method does not give radial pressures, or distribution of such pressures, coefficients of friction could not be determined. Although Unckel measured density distribution, he was not able to determine radial or shear stresses. Shaler2 has proposed theoretical expressions for the stress and density distribution within cylindrical compacts during pressing, in accordance with the experimental results of Kamm, Steinberg, and Wulff.3 By application of Siebel's method,4 Kamm et a13 plotted stress trajectories for two compacts. From the stress trajectories they calculated coefficients of friction from point to point along the die wall. As pointed out by Shaler in the discussion of Ref. 3, these values are based on progressive point-to-point calculations on finite size grid squares across the compact. In the region of the die wall such calculated values may therefore have considerable cumulative error. The purpose of the present paper is to develop an experimental method by which the nonhydrostatic pressures and shears acting on the interior wall of a cylindrical die can be measured. Such measurements can then he correlated with existing data to aid in the explanation of the pressing process. The method used is based on the elastic: properties of the thick-walled tube used as the die. The principle of super-position of force systems on an elastic body is assumed to hold. Electric strain gauges were mounted in adjacent positions on the exterior die wall in order to get an exact measurement of the variation of tangential strain over the length of the die during pressing. While in this paper, measurements in terms of only tangential strains are considered, it is well to note that similar calculations may be set up for axial strains. The latter are not preferred, since they tend to be smaller than the tangential strains and therefore permit less sensitive measurements. Discussion in this work is restricted to compacts pressed from both ends, since the elastic deformation of the die is then more amenable to analysis. Before choosing the electric strain gauge method, a more direct line of attack was considered and discarded. The discarded idea was the insertion of a pressure gauge through a hole in the die wall.* The gauge would have been in the form of a small piston. If pressure were exerted against such a gauge, it would move outward along a radius of the die. One disadvantage of the scheme is its inability to measure shears along the die wall. Another more serious disadvantage is the disturbance caused by the device itself. It would serve to change the forces it was designed to measure. No matter how small the movement of the gauge, when pressure is applied a discontinuity would exist in the wall surface at that point. Due to the stress concentration caused by the hole, abnormal deflections of the die wall would occur around the gauge. During pressing, powder would be forced into the resulting depression. The depression would then become larger with increasing compacting pressure. Powder, not being a fluid, is capable of supporting shear. The ease with which it would flow into the die wall depression to further move the piston is an indication, not of the radial pressure at that point, but of the state of shear retarding the movement. Thus the "pressure" gauge is really a criterion of flowability, and of the capability of the powder to support shear. For these reasons, it was decided that the electric strain method, herein employed, was more reliable, if more indirect. The gauges and lead wires, mounted on the external die wall do not in any way affect the behavior of the metal powder or the die during pressing. Theory of the Method THE EFFECT OF RADIAL PRESSURE ON THE DIE WALL Effect of a Single Small Band of Hydrostatic Pressure Consider a die which is a thick-walled cylinder of outer radius R. and inner radius Ri. If over a small finite length L there is a normal pressure P, a tangential strain distribution at the outer wall results. This is shown schematically in Fig 1. This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. A SURVEY of the technical literature concerned with oil well drilling methods and particularly with rate of penetration by various cutting media on different types of rock provides a mass of conflicting data. This is especially true with respect to, (1) the relative efficiency of diamond, rotary and percussion drilling operations; (2) the costs of the various types of drilling; and (3) the hardness factor of various types of rock and cutting media. The latter is the particular phase of the subject discussed here. The cause of the confusion may be attributed partially to a lack of 'basic knowledge concerning the physical properties of the cutting media and of individual types of rock. It is also due in part to a general lack of uniform standards in the industry for evaluating the hardness versus drillability of rocks while possible errors in interpretation by the authors of the various papers pertaining to the subject may be an additional cause of misunderstanding. The hardness of a mineral is defined by Dana' as "the resistance which a smooth surface offers to abrasion." Webster' states that hardness is "the cohesion of the particles on the surface of a body (as a mineral) as determined by its capacity to scratch another or be itself scratched." Rock hardness, although not usually defined in publications describing rocks, is assumed to be the same as the minerals which compose the rock or the resistance of the rock to abrasion. Drillability of a rock may be defined arbitrarily as the rate at which rock is penetrated by a definite type of drilling tool with the assistance of a specific type of cutting surface or medium and under speci- fied conditions as to speed of rotation and applications of pressure. Eventually the term penetrability may have to be employed to include any method of making boreholes in rocks, since methods other than those using conventional cutting surfaces are already in operation. A case in point is the jet piercing methoda which employs an oxy-acetylene flame as a means of penetration. The word hardness as used by the drilling fraternity has a variety of meanings which depend upon the type of drilling method employed. For example, in diamond drilling, hardness is interpretated as resistance to abrasion. In percussion drilling the term implies resistance to impact or indentation, while in rotary drilling, hardness is considered anal-agous to compressive strength. The three types of hardness—abrasion, impact and compression—are conflicting variables for different types of rock. Nevertheless, the term hardness is applied indiscriminately by the industry for the resistance of rock to penetration by any type of drilling technique. Abrasion Hardness Since 1818, Moh's scale of hardness, although only relative in nature, has been accepted universally as the method of measuring mineral and therefore rock hardness. In the increasing struggle to cheapen the cost of our iron and steel products a great deal of attention lias been given to economies in the manufacture of coke; and while but little lias been accomplished in this direction in the United States, the narrow margin between cost and market-price, which has obtained here for the past few years of continuing manufactur ing depression, has brought the coke-maker face to face with the problem, how to save, and benefit by it, the hitherto waste products of distillation. I These may be summed up under three heads, generally rank ing, in value, in the following order: 1. Ammonia salts.. 2. Oil- or tar-products. 3. Gas. There are cases in which the last may assume the position of greatest importance. The greatest obstacle encountered by the American coke maker, on investigating the subject, has been the apparent necessity of discarding his existing plant of bee-hive ovens, and erecting an entirely new and very expensive system of retort ovens, against the product of which Be has probably been prejudiced from his earliest knowledge of the subject. The object of this paper is to bring prominently before our coke-experts a brief history of the development at Sheffield, England, of a most successful system of the utilization of by products in connection with all already existing plant of bee hive ovens. This system has now been in satisfactory operation for about five years, and is applied to a series of blocks of ovens, comprising-about 140- in all At this plant, belonging to the well-known firm of Newton,

Based on the belief that operating details are a definite contributing factor to major economies, this paper traces the development of crushing cavity design in Symons cone crushers to attain maximum liner utilization. Wear rates are analyzed and compared in this presentation and drawings illustrate succeeding design changes. IN these times of rising labor and material costs, it has become more and more necessary that attention be paid to some operating details which, in their obscurity, may he the key to major economies. Liner wear in crushing cavities of secondary and tertiary crushers can become an appreciable cost item when the material to be crushed is hard and abrasive. This item of cost not only includes the value of the crushing members, but also more intangible costs such as labor and lost production due to more frequent replacement. The variables which are encountered in ores and minerals to be reduced; the design of plant and machine application; the sizes, shape, and fineness, characteristics of the crushed product; the moisture; hardness; friability; and abrasiveness of the material to be crushed are all influencing factors which must be taken into consideration in the selection of a crusher, and particularly in the design of crushing cavity and liners to be used in a crusher. Through a research program undertaken in cooperation with many operators of Symons cone crushers a new approach to crusher cavity design was made, resulting in the development of liners for specific operations which showed: 1—maximum utilization, as high as 70 to 80 pct of original weight of metal, and 2— maximum capacity of unit during the greater portion of its life. It has been found that liners so designed for a given operation will show added economies in power consumption, maintenance, and general wear and tear on the crushing unit. Initial work in the so-called tailoring of crushing cavitles was begun on the tertiary or fine crushing units where as a rule reduction ratios were low, varying from 3 to 6. Parallel or sizing zones in the lower portion of the crushing cavity were too long, resulting in a tendency to pack. It was found that very little additional crushing was done in the parallel zone after the initial impact in that zone and that a relatively small amount of' additional crushing was done by attrition, which required very careful feed control. A small amount of over-feeding would result in packing which not only consumed power but caused unnecessary liner wear as well. The illustrations which follow in this discussion will show only contours of crushing cavities, and for purposes of simplification the cavities will be considered only in their closed position. The first step, therefore. was to reduce the sizing zone to a minimum. This was done by removing the lower portion of the liner as shown in Fig. 1. The result of the change was a saving of 15 to 20 pct in liner cost, less power consumption, with no change in capacity. This change in design, while an improvement, did not go far enough. As wear took place, the change in the liner was not uniform throughout its entire length, resulting in a restriction of the feed opening and thereby loss of capacity. Furthermore, progressive wear of the liner had the effect of lengthening the parallel zone until finally the entire crushing cavity was all parallel zone, see Fig. 2. It is obvious from the reduced feed opening of the worn liner that the ability of the machine to receive material is lessened considerably. Furthermore, the long parallel zone with its worn, irregular profile did not operate at its highest efficiency. The first attempt to overcome this difficulty was carried out on a 5 1/2-ft crusher installed in a plant producing roofing granules. The material being crushed was a very hard graywacke and the crusher was closed-circuited with a screen having .232-in. slotted openings. A radical change in contour was developed, as illustrated in Fig. 3. Equal wear lines on both concave and mantle are designated 1, 2, 3, etc. The method of development of this contour is as follows: Since adjustment for wear is vertical, corresponding intersections of wear lines and vertical lines developed concave and mantle contours which maintained equal but lengthening wear surfaces in the parallel zone. The ideal contour, of course, is one in which the length of the parallel zone remains constant, but because of present foundry practice and heat treating characteristics this is impossible.

OLIVER C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-We are indebted to these two gentlemen for the work which they have done with the oils derived from sage brush. Their work should not be confused, however, as the work of Mr. Adams deals with steam-distilled oils and that of Mr. Clevenger with destructively distilled oil, largely. In other words, Mr. Adams' oil is probably the original essential oil that existed' in the brush before distillation while Mr. Clevenger's oil not only contained this essential oil but also some products of destructive distillation of the wood constituents. I had noticed the work of Mr. Adams on attempting to separate the various constituents in the oils of some of the Western conifers and had sent to him to ask if he could send me small samples of some of. these pure products. This he very kindly did, and with them included some samples of oil from the common sage brush, whose characteristics he has here described, as well as a sample of oil from the common "rabbit brush." Only the sage brush oil proved of much value for flotation, but it, was very powerful, and I so informed Mr. Adams. Even in amounts as small or smaller than 1/10 lb. per ton of ore, it gave very quick and positive flotation of many ores, with high-grade concentrates and good extractions. It proved to be especially desirable for the flotation of carbonates of lead and of copper which had received an artificial coating of sulphide by treatment with a solution of a soluble sulphide. I also received a sample of crude pyroligneous acid from sage brush prepared by Dr. W. C. Ebaugh, of Salt Lake City. It did not do very good work in flotation, but it is possible that by concentration of this product to obtain the residual tar a good flotation oil might result. This has not been done as yet and I am sorry to see that Mr. Clevenger has not done this. It might be that the dissolved tar, added to the settled tar, would make a total yield of flotation oil higher than the 4 per cent. which Mr. Clevenger feels is a safe estimate. The importance of this point will be seen in the following discussion of the possible costs of sage brush oils for flotation.

The remarks that follow are based substantially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which has been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more- difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in inter- mediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1-1/2%. The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present. Most of the rich, readily accessible placers were mined by our forefathers. Current opportunities exist: (1) in remote areas where infrastructure has been absent in the past, or development has been prohibited by adverse ownership - political or commercial; (2) in deposits that could not be mined by equipment available to our forefathers; (3) in deposits unidentified by our forefathers; (4) where the-price-of-product/cost ratio is substantially better than in earlier years; or (5) a combination of those factors. When I entered the placer business in the late 1930s, and subsequently, a prevailing opinion believed that glacial deposits should be avoided as irregular in mineral content and composition, and unrewarding to explore and develop; yet an operator has been mining a fluvio-glacial deposit profitably for the past 17 years. Rich buried placer channels, of ten called paleo-channels were worked in the last century, generally by hand methods, and under conditions that would be unacceptable today. Exploration and mining equipment now available make some of these channels attractive targets. Well-known examples are in California and Australia. The formation of a commercial placer requires a source of valuable minerals. Above primary deposits, there may be eluvial deposits formed by the erosion of gangue minerals and the concentration "in situ" of valuable minerals. Down slope from these deposits are the hillside or colluvial deposits, and below them are the alluvial deposits of redeposited material. Most of the great placer fields of the world are the result of several generations of erosion and deposition. Well-known examples are in California and Colombia. Gold is a very resistant and malleable material, and gold placers may extend for 64 or 80 km (40 or 50 miles) along a river system. Platinum is less malleable, but is very resistant to disintegration. Diamonds are extremely hard, and (especially gem diamonds) may be found over great lengths of a river system. Cassiterite is less resistant to disintegration, and tin placers seldom extend over two miles without resupply from an additional source or sources of mineralizaton. Tungsten minerals are generally more friable, and within a few hundred yards of the source disintegrate to the point that they are uneconomical to recover. Rutile, ilmenite and zircon placers generally result from the weathering of massive deposits, and may be encountered over extensive areas; most are fine grained and durable. What does a geologist or mining engineer look for in placer exploration? The old adage to look for a mine near an existing mine is still valid. You need a source of valuable mineral. Then you require conditions for concentration, which means a satisfactory gradient and/or other conditions that will permit heavy minerals to settle. Nicely riffled gravel, often called a shingling of the bars, is conducive to placer formation. Coarser gravel is logically associated with coarser gold. Excessive clay and/or high stream velocities in narrow channels can carry gold far downstream and distribute it uncommercially over a large area. When material is extremely fine, in situ weathering and concentration become more important. Placers frequently occur distant from lode mines, and one must remember that in a larger watershed the exceptional floods that occur once in a hundred or a thousand years can move great quantities of material long distances. The carrying power of water is said to vary with the fifth or sixth power of its velocity. I am not ready to disagree with Waldemar Lindgren and accept that many commercial placers are substantially enriched by the chemical deposition of gold from solutions; however, I have seen crystalline gold in clayey material quite distant from known sources of primary gold that is dif-

SEVERAL notable papers, and free discussion on many controversial subjects, marked the various sessions of the Petroleum Division at the annual meeting. The Division first convened on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, and wound up with a dinner and technical meeting on Thursday night. H. C. Fowler presided at the opening session, which was devoted to problems of engineering research and production engineering. Joseph Chalmers abstracted his paper on the flow of air and gas through porous media, in the preparation of which E. L Rawlins and D. B. Talia-ferro contributed. G. H. Fancher told how much he and his associates at Pennsylvania State College were interested in this field, and described the problems they had met in conducting test work. He made a plea for standardization of testing methods. Mr. Fowler then read an abstract of written discussion by Professor Barb, which was followed by discussion by Dr. Fancher and Mr. Chalmers of technical points in connection with the Chalmers' paper. H. H. Hill abstracted written discussion from Messrs. Wilde and Moore, of the Humble company. The second paper, by K. B. Nowels, on computing pressure drop in the pipe of flowing oil wells, was abstracted by the author. Messrs. Blair Smith, G. W. Coggeshall, and I. I. Gardescu participated in the discussion, and the chairman abstracted written discussion prepared by Mr. Rawlins. Most of this had to do with the viscosity of gas¬oil mixtures, on which subject Mr. Nowels said there was great need of accurate technical information.

The modulus of elasticity is defined as the ratio of stress within the proportional limit to corresponding strain. This property, as thus defined, is a constant for each kind of material; and in tension or compression is usually designated by the symbol E. The modulus of elasticity serves as an index of the stiffness of a material or a measure of its ability to resist change of shape under stresses not higher than the proportional limit. In view of the frequency with which the modulus of elasticity is used in engineering calculations, it is surprising to note the uncertainty that exists as to authentic values, and the marked lack of published information relating to the variation of the constant E within individual alloy systems. A value of 10,000,000 Ib. per sq. in. has been quoted as representative of aluminum and its alloys. This value has been found to be approximately corrcct for pure aluminum and aluminum alloys in which the total percentage of the alloying elements is low, but seriously in error in the case of alloys that contain relatively large amounts of the alloying elements. a National Metals Handbook. b Intcrnatiunal Critical Tables. He has had 40 years experience in tunnel and shaft-sinking work in both soft and hard rock, as well as subaqueous rock. He has used moles in various locations and has traveled around the world studying the problems. SOME BRIEF COMMENTS ON "MOLES" by Thomas Adair We of the Perini Corp. have been, over the past 15 years, in the forefront of the battle to develop the mechanized miner. We have contributed much to pioneer, develop, and promote the use of the mining machine. Our money and talent have not been spared in this effort. However, we are sorry to say that as of the present time (1968), at least from the economic stand- point, this effort has not been very rewarding. But, I must say to those who are presently involved in the work of building mining machines, do not be discouraged. There is money in it. We of Perini Corp. know because we put it in there. It has been estimated that during the next 15 years, some $20 billion will be spent on underground excavation; more than 13 thousand miles of sub- surface tunnels will be excavated throughout the nation. An aggressive, properly structured research and development effort would produce, within the next five or ten years, a better excavation technology and improved boring system capable of reducing present costs drastically, with a resultant great saving. The time for this effort is now, but where the enabling money for this effort will come from, I have no idea. Machine builders should be encouraged to design and develop a shield- type boring machine capable of continuous mining through varying types of ground or rock by incorporating the possibility of making minor modifications such as change of bit type, power package, etc. Such a machine could

THE "slot" system of mining in use at the Golden Queen mine, Mojave, Calif., does not involve any new mining methods. It is, how-ever, a, new combination and adaptation of several stoping systems in common practice. The first plans for stoping operations at the Golden Queen mine called for ordinary shrinkage stopes. The hanging wall of the vein, where exposed, is a very hard felsite with a dip varying from 50° to 70°. The vein itself is quartz, shattered and fractured enough to make it easy to drill and blast to a clean hanging wall. There is no well defined footwall. The footwall limits had to be determined by assays as the metal content faded out into the felsite. Two shrinkage stopes, each approximately 200 ft. long, were laid out and started on the 200-ft. level. One of these stopes, varying in width from 8 to 18 ft., was carried on up to the top limits of the ore, approxi-mately 120 ft., without a break in the operation. The shrinkage system proved entirely satisfactory and low costs resulted from-this operation. In the final drawing of this stope, two timbermen followed down on the ore, scaling the hanging wall clean of small fragments and placing an occasional long stull from foot to hanging wall where it was deemed necessary. Few such stulls; however, were required. The hanging wall stood up very well until the stope was entirely emptied of ore. Waste fill was then put into the stope by the glory-hole method, through a waste raise that had previously been run to surface from the middle of the stope. The second shrinkage stope ran into difficulties about 35 ft. above the sill floor. Up to this point the maximum width of the ore had been about 15 ft. The ore suddenly widened into the footwall to a distance of 40 ft. in the north end of the stope. In extending the stoping operations over this width, it was soon found that the vein material would not arch and support itself. Drilling in this end of the stope was then entirely too hazardous, and all operations were stopped.
