The subsidence and deformation characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata is quite different from that with consolidated overlying strata. In this paper, based on the engineering background of large mining height mining in No.21 coal seam of Zhaogu No.2 Coal Mine in Henan Province, China, the PFC 2D numerical simulation and surface subsidence field observation was conducted to study the subsidence characteristics of strata with thick unconsolidated overlying strata (680m). Numerical model with dimensions of 2000m 750m was established and mining process with different working face lengths (150 m,200 m,250 m,300 m) and different working face advancing distances (40 m,80 m,120 m,160 m,200 m,240 m,280 m,320 m,360 m,400 m,440 m,480 m) were simulated. The surface subsidence characteristics and displacement field variation of rock strata under different working face advancing distances were observed and analyzed. The results show that with the advance of working face, the structure of subsidence-like basin will be formed in each rock stratum, and the influence range of mining on rock stratum is “bowl-shaped”, and the influence increases with the increase of advancing distance. The unconsolidated layer has a buffer effect on the mining-induced subsidence, and the buffer effect is realized by the expansion of the subsidence area. The movement law of strata under different working face lengths is similar to that under general mining, and the structure of subsidence-like basins will also be formed in each stratum. The influence range of strata after mining is ' bowl-shaped ', and the influence extent increases with the increasing of working face length; the internal subsidence of the unconsolidated layer is more intense and complex than that of the rock layer; the surface subsidence movement shows an obvious 'basin' phenomenon. The field observation data of surface subsidence also confirm the above results.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. Bochum’s Underground Lot 306 was characterised by a confined site and unique tunnelling methods. A highly mechanized construction concept was developed to achieve high progress rates. Bespoke backup systems for muck disposal and material supply were used. For the first time in suburban tunnelling, wet shotcrete, batched onsite, was applied. A three-storey underground car park had to be undermined with only1.5 m of overburden and had to be lifted several times by “compensation grout in.” An existing operational two-lane metro tunnel was enlarged without any major impact on train operation.

Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

In the construction of "Hamacho" subway station (Tokyo Metropolitan Rapid Transit), in order to minimize ground surface settlement, the pipe-roof method was employed as an auxiliary measure when removing the portion between two parallel shield tunnels to form one large tunnel for the station. 14 steel pipes (dia.1,219.2mm, length 75m) were driven in horizontally so as to cover tunnels and support heavy and extremely soft covering soil and surface structures. Procedures of temporary supporting, excavation under compressed air, reinforcing, concreting, etc., and some comparisons with conventional methods are described.

Extensive research and testing in commercial facilities has clearly demonstrated that heavy medium cyclones are the most effective process for cleaning a 0.6 x 0.15mm (28 x 100 Mesh) coal at low separating gravities, less than 1.35. This paper describes testing performed to deter- mine system characteristics at these lower gravities and the type of circuitry required to maximize performance. The results of these studies include both pilot and commercial scale tests of cleaning 0.6 x 015mm (28 x100M) coal.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. The Drainage Services Department (DSD) of the Hong Kong SAR Government commissioned the design and construction of the West Kowloon Drainage Improvement, Stage 2, Phase 2, Kai Tak Transfer Scheme (KTTS) project in 2000 to relieve potential flooding in Mong Kok caused by the insufficient capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. The KTTS involves construction of a 1.5km,4.4m drainage tunnel and a 450m long box culvert, running from Waterloo Road near Hereford Road to the existing Kai Tak Nullah in San Po Kong. This paper describes the design and construction of; the bored tunnel through both hard rock and soft ground using a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), six associated access shafts, a connection structure at Waterloo Road and the box culvert connecting the bored tunnel to the outfall at Kai Tak nullah. Details will be provided on the contractor’s alternative designs adopted during the contract including the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete as one-pass temporary and permanent support for three of the shafts and modifications to the Engineer’s design for the box culvert structure.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated long-wall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every 1.5 m [5 fl] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 MA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes.Water is routed to the roof bolter fromthe main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/ m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box, the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3, a 60% reduction in respirable dust concentration. The quartz content of the roofmaterialwas high, ranging from 28.9 to 52.7%during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60% when cleaning the collector boxes.

The Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd at Nchanga was commissioned in 1974 as the world's first largest successfully operated agitation leach SX-EW plant for copper production. The design, development and operation of the plant soon after commissioning termed as TLP stage II has been described by Holmes et al (1). In the initial phase the plant was designed to treat approximately 25,000 tonnes per day of current flotation tailings from the Nchanga Concentrator operations, and had a design capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper. Further expansion took place in 1986, and TLP stage III was successfully commissioned to treat an additional 20,000 -25,000 tonnes per day of large reserves (over 135m tonnes) of reclaimed tailings stockpiled since the early 1930's in four paddock type tailings dams (T01 to T04). The salient feature of TLP stage III expansion described by S K Mwenechanya et al (2 -3) was the installation of the world's largest Horizontal Belt Filter Plant with 26 filters each of 80 m2 filtration area.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. This paper evaluated using a water-filled abandoned mine (Orphan Boy) as a heat source for a 240- kW closed-loop heat pump with the goal of heating a 2,000-m2 building. The mine has a 245-m vertical shaft connected to a large stope by three horizontal cross-cut shafts. There is 1,250 x 106 L of water at a consistent temperature of 24-26° C that is available mostly in the stope. The only heat exchanger placement option is in the vertical shaft. Therefore, the focus was to model heat exchanger placement in the vertical shaft to determine the extent to which the systems will induce thermal currents between the stope and vertical shaft. Modeling of thermal currents, temperature profiles and heat contribution from the ground was done using finite difference and computational fluid dynamics. An optimal configuration was determined showing sufficient water movement and heat transfer will occur with a low water temperature in the shaft above 20° C. This project supports a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant that will implement the full-scale system.

Drainage improvements at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, IL included the installation of a drainage and storm water system to control the over?ow from nearby Willow Higgins Creek. This involved construction of a weir structure at the creek and the channeling of water from the weir to a newly constructed reservoir via three, 3.7-m(12-ft) diameter, underground storm sewer lines. The sewer lines passed beneath an existing, 2.3-m (90-inch) diameter high-pressure water main, which was to remain in service throughout sewer line installation. The soil composition around the water main ranged from medium stiff clays to silty sands and sandy silts. Triple-fluid jet grouting was used to stabilize the variable soil profile beneath the water main in preparation for tunneling and installation of the sewer lines. The varying soil strata presented a challenge to the project team to establish a constant set of jet grouting parameters throughout the stabilized zone while keeping within the specified unconfined compressive strength range for the stabilized zone of 690 to 1,380 kPa (100 to 200 psi)at 28 days.

One of the largest mining shows in the world is set take place April 15-18 in Santiago, Chile. Expomin 2008 is expected to attract more than 60,000 professionals from around the world who are involved in all aspects of the mining industry. Expomin has become an important place for mining leaders to meet, organizers said, ?with great expectations for the development of new business in international markets.? This is the 10th Expomin. The event, held every two years, is expected to at-tract exhibitors from more than 25 countries, representing nearly 1,000 companies and more than 3,000 brands related to the mining industry, organizers said. Most all of the world?s largest equipment manufacturers and suppliers ? surface and underground ? will be represented. The importance of the event to the Chilean and international mining industry can be seen by the increase in size of the exhibition ? 13 percent more surface space in 2008, compared with the 2006 Expomin. The exhibit will be broken down into four pavilions, covering 34,054 m2 (355,570 sq ft). An outdoor area for the large mining equipment will cover 16,120 m2 (173,520 sq ft).

With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT Geographic Setting The Kops II plant is a pumped storage scheme of the hydroelectric power producer ‘Vorarlberger Illwerke AG’ which is currently under construction in the Austrian Province of Vorarlberg. The plant is located at the end of the Montafon valley and will be fed with water coming from the Silvretta mountain range (Figure 1) Description of Plant The Kops II plant shall be operated as a pumped storage plant with three highly flexible and quickly controllable power generating units. Each unit shall have a capacity of 150 MW and shall be equipped for both turbine operation and pump operation. The Kops II plant uses the existing Kops Lake as upper storage reservoir and the existing Rifa balancing reservoir as lower storage reservoir. All major plant components of the Kops II scheme are located below ground. Total investment costs areapprox. 360 million Euro. Construction Lots The construction works for the Kops II plant, which were subdivided into three lots, were launched in September 2004. It is planned that the first power generating unit shall go on line in the year 2007. The completion of the overall project and the operation start-up of the second and third unit are envisaged for the year 2008. Lot 1—Pressure Tunnel. The 5.5-km-long pressure tunnel forms the connection between the Kops Lake and the beginning of the pressure shaft. The tunnel was excavated by the use of a double-shield TBM. Lot 2—Pressure Shaft and Surge Chamber. The approx. 1.1-km-long pressure shaft was excavated by TBM, advancing from bottom to top. Featuring an inclination of80%, the pressure shaft overcomes a difference in height of approx. 700 m. Lot 3—Power House Cavern and Tailrace Structure. The power house cavern, which is being built approx. 150 m inside the mountain, forms the core of this plant. The power house is designed to accommodate three power generating units, and the transformer cavern is forseen to accommodate three transformer units. The tailrace structure serves the purpose of conveying the water to the lower storage reservoir during turbine operation and as water intake during pump operation (Figure 2).
