"Bureau of Mines engineers3/ examined the White Eagle fluorspar mine on September 3, 1943, and again on February 17, 1944. The examinations led to a proposal for the exploratory project upon which this report is based. The project, which was supervised by the author and P. L. Russell, was started on April 6, 1945, and completed on June 26, 1945.Geologists4/ of the Federal Geological Survey examined, mapped, and reported on this property prior to initiation of the Bureau of Mines project.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. H. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due to C. H. The property is reached from Deming, N. Mex. by taking the paved U. S. Highway No. 260 northwestward for 13 miles to the junction with State Route 61. State Route 61 is a graded but unpaved road and is followed northward for 8 miles to a junction with a poor dirt road, which is followed eastward for 11 miles to the mine. Silver City, N. Hex., is about 50 miles northwest of the mine and may be reached by several routes.The White Eagle patented claim was owned by L. H. Duriez of Vanadium, N. Mex., W. D. and W. A. Howard of Deming, N. Mex., Alvan N. White of Silver City, N. hex, and: Mrs. E. M. Saunders of Los Angeles, Calif. D. P. McCabe of Lordsburg, N. Mex., a former lessee, has recently contracted to purchase the property.The White Eagle claim was located about 1920 and was patented in November 1933. It was leased to Cooper Shapley of Deming, N. Mex., in July 1933; to General Chemical Co. from August 1938 to May 1940; to Antonio Cristo from October 1940 to the fall of 1942; and f is ally it passed into the hands of D. F. McCabe of Lordsburg, N. Mex., in May 1945.Approximately 25,000 tons of fluorite ere containing about 65 percent CaF2, have been mined and shipped from this property.5/ Most of this ore was mined by Cooper Shapley and the General Chemical Co. and shipped to the General Chemical Co.'s La Purisima mill at Deming. No exact data on production are available."

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 88 samples from 60 fields are presented in this report. Similar analyses from other fields in California have been published in previous reports listed in the appendix, page 52. Yearly production of crude oil in California and the percentage of United States production represented by California production for 1948-54 are given in table 1. [ ] Analyses in this report are of samples from the fields listed in table 2, with production data for 1953, cumulative production through 1953, and year of discovery of each field. Information regarding the source and general characteristics of the samples is included in table 3 with a summary of analytical and computed data.

Output of minerals was insignificant in 1981 and made a negligible contribution to the gross national product (GNP), estimated at $1.2 billion.2 Agriculture accounted for 40% of CNP and manufacturing accounted for 10%. The chief source of income was indirect taxes levied on traffic through the Port of Cotonou, an entrepôt. Trade statistics for Benin were incomplete and dated. Major trading partners were France and other members of the European Communities. Benin was a member of the West African Monetary Union and as such must coordinate its foreign currency, reserves, interest rate structure, and fund transfer with other member countries. Its currency, the Communauté Financière Africaine franc (CFAF), was fixed to the French franc.

The Belizean economy registered a modest real growth of 1.3% during 1981. The gross domestic product (GDP), based on current prim was $121 million' with an inflation-rate of 10%. The country received $19 million in economic aid during 1981. In early 1981, Belize'e four commercial banks raised the interest on deposits to 15% in an effort to curb capital outflow. During 1981, the financial situation deteriorated somewhat, particularly the balance of payments. For the year the total value of imports exceeded exports by almost $38 million, while the Government continued to maintain a fairly free trade policy. Import duties and term averaged about 8% on essential item and 40% on nonessential ones.

Tri-axial strains in pillars, created by pillar robbing, were measured in an experiment at the Dysart No. 1 uranium mine near Grants) New Mexico. At this mine, room-and-pillar stoping is used on the advance, and pillars are recovered on the retreat. The are deposit is, for all practical purposes, horizontal. Measuring devices were installed in pillars approximately 90 to 200 feet from the break line, and strains were recorded over a 4-to 6-week period. The measurements indicate that, in general, the algebraic magnitude of vertical strains increased, and the horizontal strains decreased, in turn, indicating that vertical (or near vertical) loads on the instrumented pillars lessened as pillars were recovered.

The Bureau of Mines found the chemical and galvanic corrosion behavior of the TZM and molybdenum-30 tungsten alloys to be generally equal or superior to that of unalloyed molybdenum in many aqueous solutions of acids, bases, and salts. Notable exceptions occurred in 1 [N] nitric acid, where both alloys corroded appreciably faster than molybdenum. In mercuric chloride solutions, the TZM alloy was susceptible to a type of crevice corrosion which was not due to differential aeration. The alloys were usually not adversely affected by con-tact with dissimilar metals in galvanic couple experiments, but the dissimilar metals sometimes corroded galvanically. Both alloys were resistant to substitute ocean water spray at 60° C.

Reconnaisance samples of reported beryllium occurrences in Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Oregon were chemically and spectroscopically tested in a mobile laboratory. The two predominant types of occurrences were green beryl associated with Cretaceous intrusions and disseminated aquamarine associated with Tertiary intrusions. Although the beryllium content of known deposits in the Northwest is too low for economic development at present, total submarginal-grade beryllium resources in pegmatites are estimated to be 570,000 to 1,870,000 tons containing 0.024 to 0.167 BeO. A potential source of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of beryllium-bearing tactite in Idaho and Montana averages 0.033 to 0.080 percent BeO.

During the course of an investigation by the Bureau of Mines into the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, it was observed that the carbon monoxide disappeared from a sealed fire area much more rapidly than could be explained on the basis of leakage of gases. Two suggestions were offered for this high rate of disappearance: (1) That the carbon monoxide, was oxidized at temperatures below 150° C. by either the anthracite or its ash (tests on many anthracites have shown that at temperatures above 150° C. carbon monoxide is liberated in the oxidation products when air is passed through it); (2) that the carbon monoxide was oxidized by micro-organisms present in the sealed area.

To determine whether reflectors could substitute for the trip lights referred to in the Federal Mine Safety Code, the Bureau of Mines studied trip safety devices under simulated haulageway conditions. The noticeability of reflectors compared with trip lights and fluorescent panels was evaluated from distances of up to 850 feet with light source intensities of up to 1-6 foot-candles (ft c). Reflectors tested consisted of a reflective lens in a holder secured to a frame that can be attached to a trip. Reflectors were found to be suitable for use as a trip safety device. In fact, for the conditions in many underground haulageways some reflectors would be more effective than a permissible trip light.

Electrowon tungsten powders were investigated with respect to consolidation, fabrication, and mechanical properties. Sheet, 0.03 inch thick, was produced and its tensile strength measured between 250° and 1,935° C. The large particle size of electrowon tungsten effectively precluded sintering to a density sufficient to allow hot working to sheet or bar. The powders were consolidated by die pressing to 70-percent density, sheathing in molybdenum, and high-energy-rate extruding to either round or sheet bar of 100-percent density. The material was then rolled conventionally to sheet. The mechanical properties of the sheet prepared from the electrowon powders compared favorably with those reported in the literature for sheet prepared from commercially produced hydrogen-reduced powder.

As part of the Federal Bureau of Mines project to develop new or improved materials for metallurgical furnace applications, the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Research Center has conducted research to develop a reproducible laboratory test for evaluating the resistance of refractories to molten slags. Tests were conducted with a slag representative of slag used to produce mineral wool. A rotating cylindrical furnace was lined with the brick being tested, and it was operated at temperatures up to 1,660° C for periods ranging from 8 to 32 hours. The effects of such variables as slag temperature, rotational velocity, charge rate, and contact time on refractory erosion were determined. The research demonstrated the reproducibility of the test procedure developed.

Silver and gold are the principal metals in the study area; they occur in quartz veins or silicified portions of shear zones. In some deposits, lead, antimony, zinc, and molybdenum are associated with gold and silver. A uranium-bearing buried stream channel lies near the southern boundary. Since 1850, more than 300 lode claims and relocations have been recorded mainly in the southeast corner of the study area (fig. 1). Complete mine production records are not available; however Clark (1977, p. 28) reported less than $300,000 of gold and silver were produced, mainly from the Exchequer, IXL, and Pennsylvania Mines. Other mines in the area probably yielded are before 1900, but early records are not available.

Presents the results of mining tests conducted on a forward rotating bucket wheel excavator designed to continuously mine coal at 1080 tons/hour, Goals of the program are to determine the feasibility of the forward rotating bucket wheel principle as an effective means of reducing fragmentation and loading costs associated with surface mining, with additional benefit in reducing, coal preparation costs and stripping overburden. Tests took place at the Navajo Mine in Fruitland, New Mexico, Results show that the excavator performed as expected and can reduce fragmenting and loading costs up to 80°. Presented are: 1) production machine design specifications and projected economies extrapolated from the test data, and 2) recommendations for further work in dust control.

This work, conducted under Bureau of Mines contract, deals with the development of a computer graphics software package that will: 1. display mine ventilation schematics and other representative Illustrations for a real-time data acquisition system under development by the Bureau, and, 2. utilize the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation on and contamination predictions. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1991 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, total output for the continent declined for many major mineral commodities produced compared with that of 1990. Also, Africa's share of total world output of these commodities generally declined. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines were for cobalt and copper owing to mining and metal processing difficulties experienced by the world's two largest cobalt producers, Zaire and Zambia. Phosphate rock output declined primarily owing to a sharp fall in production from Morocco, also a leading world producer. Morocco's state corporation for phosphate production experienced marketing problems, leading to the decline.

This regional report covers the mineral industries of Canada and 40 countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Also included is a brief description of the mineral potential of Antarctica. The Latin American region encompasses an area twice that of the United States. Latin America and Canada have a rich and diversified endowment of mineral fuels, metals, and industrial minerals. Tables 1 and 2 provide a summary view of Latin America and Canada's output of its major mineral commodities in world mineral supply in 1991 (revised) and 1992. Table 3 shows the relative importance of a selected group of minerals produced in Latin America in the world mineral economy.

There are no producing or developing mines in the study area. The only mineral production was stone from a basalt deposit near Indian View Point. Cinders and sand and gravel have been produced from deposits within 1/2 mi (0.8 km) of the boundary. Stone, sand and gravel, and cinder deposits inside the area are not considered resources because equal or better quality material is found closer to markets. The study area has no known oil and gas, coal, geothermal, or other energy related deposits. However, in 1982 application was filed on 25,000 acres (10,125 ha) of petroleum and on 15,000 acres; (6,0/5 ha) of geothermal leases.
