"Microcrystalline silica impurities such as quartz and opal-CT commonly associated in bentonite should be controlled and removed as far as possible when bentonite is used as biocompatible raw material because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. Since opal-CT contained in bentonite in trace amounts cannot be well separated by conventional sedimentation method, in this work, the ultrasound-assisted removal of the impurity was attempted. Irradiating ultrasound into bentonite-water suspension promoted the production of fine montmorillonite particles in the suspension and the production markedly increased when montmorillonite was activated by Na2CO3. Subsequent centrifugation of the suspension made it possible to recover pure montmorillonite particles as an overflow product. Only 16.2 mass % of total solids was recovered as an overflow from the non-activated suspension, whereas 63.5 mass % was recovered from the activated suspension at centrifuging speed of 10000 rpm. Increasing sonicating time enhanced the yield of overflow, however, excessive sonication up to 10 min hindered the purification of montmorillonite. It was observed that the peak reflection of (101) plane of opal-CT in overflow increased as sonicating time increased during prolonged sonication. INTRODUCTION Bentonite consisting predominantly of mineral montmorillonite is clay-rich soft rock generated frequently from the alteration of volcanic ash. Depending on the nature of its genesis, bentonite contains a variety of accessory minerals, which may include mainly quartz, feldspar, opal cristobalite/tridymite (opal-CT), calcite, illite and mica. The presence of these accessory minerals can impact the industrial value of the deposit, reducing its commercial value depending on its applications. Therefore, bentonite is often purified by removing these impurity minerals for special applications where specific properties and characteristics are required (Murray, 1999). Among the special applications, bentonite is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry as both excipient and active ingredient in the forms of liquid (suspensions, emulsions), semi-solid (creams, ointments) and solid (powder, capsules and tablets). The basic requirements for bentonite to be used as raw material are pure, microbiological and mineralogical inertness. Physical properties such as swelling volume and gel formation are also important. Particularly, microcrystalline silica polymorphs such as quartz, cristobalite and opal-CT should be controlled and removed as far as possible because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans."

The concept of a high pressure liquid jet mill with highly unsteady flow, has been developed and recently patented by Cornerstone Technologies LLC (CsT), for the purpose of micron and sub-micron particle production. The mill accepts feed sizes up to 15mm for some materials and is capable of sub-micron production. Successful material range from precious metals such as silver and palladium to dielectric components and substrates such as Barium Titanate slips, zirconia, titania and silica. The process has also succeeded in adequately reducing the size of materials for both composite and coating uses such as anthracite coal, graphite, chrome metal, wollastonite and more than 100 others. A unique design approach has been taken to highly maximize the energy flux in the mill’s chambers to create extremely high turbulence and destructive cavitation. This is assisted by shock waves, which cause particles to undergo ultra high frequency pressure pulsations, high frequency collisions and then abrasion, shattering, hydro-wedging, and cleaving. Due to these extreme properties the processing occurs in just fractions of a second allowing throughputs up to 1000 kg/h on a machine that would fit inside a 60 cm box. The technical solution and technological advance, as well as the environmental and economic benefits indicate rapid and wide spread acceptance of high-pressure liquid jet milling in modern industry.

"Dry coal dressing was popular during the 1950.s and 60.s in many parts of the world. The devices mainly used were air jigs and air tables.The increase in ash and moisture content of run-of-mine coals due to the wide advanced mechanisation of mining mechanisation during and after this period led to that pneumatic devices being unable to treat run-of-mine coals with the desired efficiency. Since the 1960.s almost all new coal preparation plants have been based on wet processes that are highly efficient in terms of coal recovery and their ability to handle damp and sticky run-of-mine coals. (Frankland, 1995)However, water is becoming increasingly costly and the disposal of fine products, containing most of the water, is an environmental concern. There would be significant cost savings and a lower total energy consumption if coal could be cleaned dry. Efficient dry coal treatment would be an interesting solution in desert, arid or cold areas.In Germany one dry coal dressing plant is in operation. The process and the advantages and disadvantages are presented below.Further on new developments in the field of dry density separation of coal are reviewed and analysed. Test results of new dry coal separation methods e.g. new developed air jig and magnetic separator are reported."

Based on the scientific investigations on mechanochemical synthesis of metal sulphides from metals or metal compounds and sulphur or sulphur compounds, the article describes the industrial production of nanoscale metal sulphides. Special operational conditions such as inert atmosphere, size and type of the grinding balls, grinding time and specific energy input are taken into consideration. A system configuration for the manufacturing of sulphides at a capacity of 100 kg/h is presented.

"The oxidized nickel ores from San Felipe deposit are composed mainly Smectites which gives to the pulps very unfavorable rheological .properties (cinematic viscosity and high shearing strength) for transportation processes (pumping), very low settling velocities and very low thickened pulps. These properties do not allow the preparation of high % solids, which affects the economic efficiency if a high pressure acid leach (HPAL) process is used. Pulps of close to 30% solids have very high BYS making pumping impossible. CIPIMM developed three technologies to solve these problems and to substantially increase the % solids in the pulps to be leached without a thickening step. These technologies are: • CIPIMM 2. At Preparation of pulps using additives. This method is based on the effect of some additives (inorganic salts) to improve the pulp’s properties. The use of this method allows increasing the % solids in the pulp up to 40% with good rheological properties • CIPIMM 2B. Preparation of pulps by thermal treatment of the ore previous to the preparation of the pulps. This method is based on the thermal destruction of the clays structure. Its use allows to obtain pulps with 50 - 60 % solids with excellent rheological characteristics. As a collateral effect, the Ni and Co grades increases by 10 - 15%. • CIPIMM 2C. Pulp preparation by chemical treatment. This method is based on the chemical transformation of clays, to obtain without thickening, pulps with 43- 45% solids and excellent rheological properties. The use of one of the three technologies depends on the chemical and mineralogical composition of the ores and the results of technical-economical evaluations to determine which one is the best alternative before running higher scale tests."

In the EU-region, the automatically operated approximately 200 (rotating hammer) shredder plants processing large technical equipment (end-of-life vehicles, large household appliances) annually produces 8-9 million tons of non-metallic grinded by-product, which ends in landfills, without recovery. Although this by-product is organic material, still contains large amount of metal components worth recycling. These operations, such as shredding and processing end of life vehicles or mixed metal components are a growing market and it is become more potential if EU directive 2002/96/EC will become obligatory for new member and candidate countries and they have to apply EU regulations. Eddy current separators (ECS) are one of the most important units of separation of non-ferrous metals from insulators in waste recycling. The product of ECS processing of shredded ELV?s is usually a mixture of Al, Cu, Brass and stainless steel. This mixture has relatively low price on the market, while purified metal products are required by smelters for which shredder operators are able to get even higher price. Our aim at University of Miskolc was to find solution producing pure metal products using dry separation processes. Authors are presenting a possible solution, using ECS. Institute of Raw Material Preparation and Environmental Processing possesses an ECS, equipped with 305 mm wide belt, and a concentric magnetic rotor. The subject of our work was to investigate the behaviour of model particles with different shape, conductivity (aluminium and brass), orientation and size in order to separate Al and Brass. We used model particles with similar shapes of shredder plant originated ones. The magnetic flux and magnetic frequency was constant and derived by the design of the rotor. During our research work, belt speed and rotor speed of ECS were varied. The particle distance and trajectory caused by throwing was determined and the results are reported in this paper.

"Cyanide tailings of gold and silver concentrates contain considerable quantities of copper-lead-zinc sulfide minerals that can be recovered. However, the strong inhibition effect of cyanide often makes it difficult to recover these sulfide minerals effectively. In this research, a sample of cyanide tailings was investigated based on the principles of process mineralogy; activating flotation tests were carried out for the target minerals in the tailings, and the activation mechanism of the activator and its influence on the target minerals were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Mixed flotation of copper and zinc was carried out using QJ-01, a combined agent containing sulfite, as the activator of copper and zinc minerals, and ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADD) and butyl xanthate (BX) as the combined collector. Copper concentrate was obtained from the mixed concentrate by using a combined inhibitor of sodium sulfide and zinc sulfate to inhibit the zinc mineral. Zinc concentrate was extracted from the copper tailings by using copper sulfate as the activator and BX as the collector. The flotation test yielded copper concentrate with a grade of 22.56% and recovery of 76.96%, and zinc concentrate with a grade of 42.56% and recovery of 82.29%, which shows that comprehensive recovery of the sulfide minerals – copper and zinc –from the cyanide tailings was realized. The FTIR analysis showed that CN- was chemisorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite and sphalerite following cyanide treatment, while the combined activator QJ-01 containing sulfite reduced CN- into SCN- and weakened the complexing ability of CN- with metal ions on the mineral surface, thus achieving a good activation effect on chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The results of this study can provide practical guidance in increasing the resource utilization ratio of cyanide tailings in gold mines, and thus contribute to alleviating environmental problems caused by stockpiling cyanide tailings. INTRODUCTION Cyanidation, the most widely used technology for extraction of gold, has several advantages such as high recovery, process maturity, low cost, etc. According to available data, the annual discharge of cyanide tailings from China's gold mines exceeds 20 million tons (Li et al., 2011). Lower grades of exploitable gold ore entail increased discharge of cyanide tailings. Huge quantities of cyanide tailings are regarded as waste and stored, resulting in significant wastage of land resources. Moreover, residual beneficiation reagents, cyanide ions, and heavy metal ions in cyanide tailings cause severe pollution of water and land (Laitos et al., 2013; Donato et al., 2007; Mudder and Botz, 2004). In addition, cyanide tailings often contain valuable elements such as gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, sulfur, and iron, which, if not recycled, would result in considerable wastage of resources. Hence, it is imperative to study the reduction and safety of cyanide tailings, and the mineral resources present in them."

Three high-grade limestone ores (CaO content over than 53 %) with different geological origin have been characterized for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. Limestone ores examined in this study showed different crystal particle size that cause difference in disintegration degree and surface area of the synthesized slaked limes. The limestone ore with smaller crystal particle size showed higher disintegration degree and also yielded slaked lime with smaller surface area, which is good for the synthesis of aragonite precipitated calcium carbonate. The synthesis of aragonite PCC using the limestone with a small crystal particle size was yielded needle-shaped aragonite with the aspect ratio of about 14. The mineral suspensions do not present a newtonian behavior as their continuous phase; they can be pseudoplastic, dilatant, or both. The viscosity becomes as the most important rheological variable because the different industrial processes involve a wide variety of rheological scenes, with a specific rheological behavior for each one. Some authors have tried to model the viscosity of suspensions considering the volumetric fraction of solids and others have also kept in mind the size of the particles (Einstein, 1906; Batchelor, 1977; Jinescu, 1974; Krieger and Dougherty, 1959; Tangsathitkulchai and Austin, 1988). Others consider the shear rate (Cross, 1965; Hershel-Bulckley, 1926; Bingham, 1916, etc). However, none of the models is able to simulate the viscosity involving the physical, chemical and mechanic factors at the same time for crowded suspensions. A new model based on Neural Networks is presented, taking into account all the variables of ceramic clay suspensions and chemical additives. Mineral ilmenite is a major resource for titanium, whose major application is for production of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) for pigment application. The production of pigment grade TiO2 from ilmenite was earlier carried out by acid leaching, which has now been banned due to environmental regulations. Further acid leaching leads to loss of iron metal values as sulphate or chloride which are also treated as effluent. In thermal plasma processing the metal values are recovered as high value pig iron and Titanium dioxide is recovered as Titania rich slag containing 80 to 85 percent TiO2. The Titania rich slag has now been considered as a better input material than synthetic rutile for production of pigment grade Titanium dioxide. On the other hand, high value pig iron goes for automobile industry for specific application. An Inflight-flight Thermal Plasma Processing plant, used for the production of Titania Rich slag and high value Pig iron from ilmenite, with 20kg capacity was designed and fabricated. The reactor has the provision to utilize the flue gas generated for preheating the input of raw materials. Various aspects of designing the furnace operation include viz. Feeding the raw material at a fixed rate, designing the crucible used for melting ilmenite, proper cooling arrangements, an innovative method for tapping the melt, recovery of heat from the gases, various safety arrangements which are some of the important milestone of the present work. The various operations have been carried out through a controller panel. Experiments were carried out to optimize various processing parameters using statistical modeling. Large scale experiments have been carried out at 10 to15 kg scale. The material balance has been calculate, and it has been observed, that about 95 percent recovery could be obtained for both Iron and Titanium oxide from ilmenite. The detailed characterization on Titania rich slag and iron has been carried out. It has also been shown that using the above slag, it is possible to prepare nanosized Titanium dioxide powder containing about 98 percent Titanium dioxide by optimizing leaching conditions. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the suitability of a coal sample from the mine Jaworzno (Poland)- locality for bacterial leaching. Laboratory research used a pure bacterial culture of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The results showed that bacterial leaching was effective, with a one month leaching time, when 65% of total sulphur and 85% of pyritic sulphur was leached. The paper describes changes to the pyrite during and after bacterial leaching.

"Pyrrhotite in nickel-copper sulphide ores is nickeliferrous and intimately associated with pentlandite. Due to its low nickel content, pyrrhotite rejection is an important step in processing of these ores. In our laboratory, various reagents were investigated for their effect on pyrrhotite depression. Among these, a combined use of triethylenetetramine and sodium metabisulphite was found highly promising.The work described in this paper has two parts. The firs part is a summary of results obtained on process samples from the pyrrhotite rejection circuit at Falconbridge’s Strathcona Mill. The second part involves simulation of the circuit performance based on the reagent conditions used in the experimental work and the concept of split factors.Two sets of reagent conditions were evaluated. The first one involved baseline conditions, simulating the current reagent performance. The second one simulated the impact these new reagents can have on the circuit performance.The simulation results obtained under baseline conditions indicated a good agreement with the current circuit performance. The simulation results suggest that at practically the same pentlandite recovery and tailing grades, the circuit concentrate nickel grade can be doubled through effective pyrrhotite rejection by these new reagents."

This article reviews factors of preg-robbing effect, occurring in the course of pressure oxidation of ore and concentrates, containing chloride compounds and so-called 'organic carbon'. The article also summarizes the main results of the studies and testwork conducted to overcome this effect. The following efficient preg-robbing mitigation methods have been noted: higher temperature of pressure oxidation process, preliminary removal of natural carbonaceous material from concentrate, chloride removal prior to concentrate pressure oxidation, and addition of water-soluble organic blanking agents, which suppress the adsorption activity of the native ore adsorbents. "One of the most important advances in the world gold metallurgy is the introduction of adsorption technologies for processing of ores and concentrates. «Adsorbent-In-Pulp» process allows to eliminate pulp filtration that is especially important during processing of clay and slime bearing ores. “Adsorbent-In-Leach” process is one of the ways for processing of preg-robbing (carbonaceous) products. High efficiency, increased metals recovery, decrease in capital and operational costs, possibility of easy control and adjustment are the advantages of adsorption processes. Anion-exchange resins and activated carbons are used as adsorbents. This paper presents Irgiredmet experience on gold adsorption technology using both adsorbents (RIP, RIL, CIP, CIL processes). It includes results of long-term studies of different theoretical and practical issues of adsorption processes. Irgiredmet started development of ion exchange technology (RIP, RIL) in 1964. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for 15 RIP plants of the former USSR. During this test work a great number of newly synthesized resins including strong- and medium-base resins was studied, different types of adsorption feed (ores and concentrates) were tested; some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption for silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, designs of technological equipment for adsorption, elution, electrowinning processes including pulsation columns, electrowinning cells etc. were developed. Irgiredmet took part in commissioning of practically all RIP plants in the former USSR. Due to its efforts RIP process became to be the standard technology. Last Irgiredmet RIP projects include the development of adsorption technology using medium-base resin for the three mines owned by GC Petropavlovsk (Amur region, Russia). The complex of the testworks on activated carbon gold adsorption technology including the search of prospective activated carbons; study on gold adsorption mechanism; development, testing and introduction of process flowsheets and the equipment for their realization was conducted. The original gold elution process was developed. The developed CIP technology was firstly introduced at Lebedinsky gold plant (Yakutia). Now carbon adsorption technology is widely used at Russian gold mines as CIP, CIL, CIC processes. The most relevant example of CIP introduction is Svetlinsky gold plant (Ural, Russia) with capacity 8 Mt of ore/ year."

Continuous vacuum belt filters mainly carry out an important duty in the solid-liquid separation processes such as iron ore concentrate dewatering. However as the particles become finer, the resistance to filtration and dewatering would increase and as the result cake moisture content tends to increase. So in recent decades, using additives in order to improve the filtration performance has been considered by many researchers. In the present study, the effect of several surfactants on the filtration rate and cake moisture content of Chadormalu iron ore concentrate (80% =40 micron) was investigated using a laboratory scale vacuum filter. The results of several tests indicated that a non-ionic surfactant (Lauryl Alcohol Ethoxylated, LAE) has the best performance on reducing the moisture content of the cake and reducing the cake formation time. The optimum dose of LAE was found to be 300 g/ton which reduced the concentrate cake moisture content from 13.76 to 11.28% (wet weight base). Some industrial filtration tests were performed in Chadormalu iron ore concentrate plant to prove the effectiveness of this surfactant. The surfactant is mixed with water and added to the concentrate slurry before distributing on the vacuum belt filter. The industrial and experimental results were almost similar, so that adding about 300 g/ton of LAE would reduce the final cake moisture content from 12.87 to 10.76%.

"Process automation as an engineering discipline is more than control systems since it includes industrial instrumentation, such as sensors, transmitters and actuators, as well as control and supervision systems, collection and transmission of data and real-time software applications to supervise and control the operation of plants or industrial processes. In the last several decades, accelerated technological development has provided a variety of software and hardware tools to aid development, maintenance and continuous improvement of automated systems. These developments however seldom reach their full potential in real plants. There are many factors to be considered, among them human capital specific training and the organization model. In this paper, a methodology for training engineers in advanced control and supervision of flotation plants is presented based on study of the application of these technologies in hybrid pilot plants. Since experimentation in real plants may present undesirable risks and costs, and simulation studies are usually limited to some unrealistic conditions, a laboratory where on-line measurements of the hydrodynamic behaviour of a pilot plant is mixed with phenomenological models has been created. In this form, an environment as close as possible to a real plant can be recreated. A flotation column and a circuit of three pneumatic cells are fully instrumented and connected to a PLC and PC network. In the control room, students learn applications of classical PID control in a DCS environment, advanced predictive control, on-line process operation diagnosis, fault analysis, virtual sensors and expert-fuzzy systems. Several undergraduate and graduate courses and theses are supported by this Process Control Laboratory infrastructure. Examples of these applications are discussed."

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

"Bentonite clay has been the traditional binder for iron ore pellets. However, bentonite increases pellets’ silica contents and is expensive. Researchers have proposed lowering bentonite doses by mixing it with other common binders. These mixtures may only be successful if the fundamental bonding mechanisms are understood. For example, what happens when bentonite (physical bonding) is mixed with fly-ash (chemical bonding)? What happens when bentonite is mixed with cornstarch (physical bonding)? In this paper, experiments are described where bentonite was mixed with various ratios of cornstarch and fly-ash, and pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. Ca(OH)2 and CaCl2 were added as activator and accelerator, respectively, to the bentonite-fly ash mixture. Curves of pellet dry strength vs. bentonite-starch ratio were linear, suggesting the physical-physical bonding mechanisms were compatible - acceptable strengths (> 22 N) were produced at all bentonite-to-starch ratios. This was contrary to bentonite-fly ash mixtures, which displayed dry strength curves with a noticeable minimum due to competing binding mechanisms. Bentonite alone and fly ash alone produced acceptable strengths (> 22 N), but their mixtures resulted in weak pellets. Due to the positive results using cornstarch (CS) binders, the effects of CS solubility in water were investigated using two CS with high and low solubility (60 and 7.5 %). CS was premixed with bentonite at various ratios (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 %). Pellets were agglomerated using 0.66 % w/w binder. The dry strength of pellets ranged from 50-300 N using the high solubility CS mixtures, and from 50-85 N using the low solubility CS mixtures. Fired strengths exceeded 2200 N/pellet at all bentonite-cornstarch ratios. This research showed that cornstarch solubility is an important factor in determining its effectiveness as a binder for iron ore concentrates, but significant work is still necessary before it can be used as a bentonite replacement."

SAGDesignTM Testing for grinding mill design was introduced commercially in 2004. Up to January 2008, 18 projects have been completed and 99 samples have been tested using this method. Two papers have been published describing the patented test procedure and one of these shows how the results compare with other grinding test methods. This paper will briefly discuss the theory on which this technology is based, and explain the procedures used to develop the calibration equation. Case studies are also included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the test work being done. These case studies show how the SAGDesign test is being used today: to design new grinding circuits for commercial full scale use; to calculate throughput in existing mills for production planning; and to accurately define grinding mill requirements at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of project development, in order to economically identify the size and cost of the grinding mills that will be needed for the project. This is important because if the full rec-ommended SAGDesign testing program is done at an early stage in the project, the definitive cost for a guaranteed throughput, grinding mill design (by Outotec if their mills are purchased) is available. New grinding mill design for final engineering will be represented by the test work done on the Climax Molybdenum Project for Phelps Dodge (now FMI) in Colorado, USA. The SAG mill and ball mill for Climax are now in fabrication with project start up in late 2009. Next, the sizing of grinding mills at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of mine development will be represented by a large metal mining property in Russia. Finally, calculation of the throughput for existing mills will be represented by work done at a base metal mine, in eastern Canada. Test work for designing SAG mills is now done in four laboratories at the time this paper was written. One in the USA at Dawson Metallurgical Laboratories, Inc. in Salt Lake City, two in Russia at the TOMS Research and Design Institute and at the Irgiredmet Research Institute, both in Irkutsk, and a fourth mill has been installed in Australia at AMMTEC Limited?s lab in Perth. A fifth SAGDesign test mill for radioactive ores has been built by Starkey & Associates, specifically for testing uranium ores and can be moved to any licensed lab in the world on a project basis.
