The 1963 Jackling Award lecturer describes the founding of Banner Mining Co. and its trials and tribulations before becoming an established firm. Such aspects as geological description of Banner mining areas, history of exploration and production, areas of present interest to the company and research work conducted by the company are included. Several years ago a wealthy Chinese business friend of mine purchased an interest in a proposed oil well to be drilled a great distance from his home. A few months later it came in as a producer and proved to be a huge success and materially added to his resources. I asked him why a man of his wealth should be so lucky in a venture outside his sphere of knowledge when most people of modest means never seemed to get ahead. His answer was, "Fat Hoy takes a chance." Even though this was his answer, I knew from my association with him that there were other tempering considerations which Mr. Hoy applied before making up his mind to enter any transaction. First, he was a cautious individual. He was also a great believer in details and insisted on knowing everything possible about a situation, and finally, he was what we call a very solid individual with good basic instincts and judgment. This philosophy of Mr. Hoy may be applied to most any business but especially to those engaged in a search for natural resources such as mining where great risks are involved. This article concerns events in the history and growth of Banner Mining Co., with which I have been associated for 27 years in capacities from mine surveyor to vice president. Mr. Hoy's philosophy has played a significant role in the exploration projects of this company over the years, but what is more important, the officers, directors, and controlling interests in Banner have been aggressive in their search for ore reserves. THE BIRTH OF BANNER Banner Mining Company was incorporated in September 1935 by a group of Oklahoma and Texas oil men for the purpose of exploring and developing the Bonney-Manilla mines at Lordsburg, N.M. These properties had a history of intermittent production since the first ore discoveries as far back as 1870. Most of the production from the district has come from four mines, namely, the Eighty-Five, the Atwood, the Bonney-Manilla, and the Misers Chest. The last two are now owned by Banner Mining. The Eighty-Five mine operated between 1885 and 1931, and production totalled 1,494,287 tons averaging 0.11 oz of gold per ton, 1.23 oz of silver per ton, and 2.80% copper. The vein extended for a distance of about 3000 ft northeast and was mined to a depth of 1650 ft. The Atwood mine, adjoining the Eighty-Five mine, to date has been of lesser importance as a producer, but it has been operating for several years producing high silica flux ores for a smelter. Production totalled 352,828 tons up to January 1, 1962 From the Bonney-Manilla and Misers Chest mines, owned by Banner, production through 1961 totalled 2,006,343 tons with an average grade as mined of 0.0192 oz of gold per ton, 0.760 oz of silver per ton and 2.63% copper. Banner built a 150-tpd flotation mill in 1936 after almost a year of development on the 600 level of the Bonney mine. After less than one year's operation, it became apparent that the 150-tpd rate was not sufficient to make a reasonable profit due to the marginal grade ores. The low tenor of the ore, mainly chalco-pyrite in a highly siliceous gangue, made mandatory the close control of costs in order to make ends meet. A 300-tpd unit was added to the mill in 1937, and it is still the operating unit today. The clean sulfides presented no problems in milling. A metallurgist doing research on it at the time stated that the copper minerals seemed to have a built-in desire to float. Mill recovery of copper throughout the 27 years of operation has averaged 96.23%. A PERIOD OF FORCED GROWTH World War II brought many hardships to Banner. Labor and supply shortages caused drastic curtailment in development work. Rapidly rising costs far outdistanced any relief from pegged prices which we received from Government agencies. THE Lehigh Valley Section is planning with a num-ber of other organizations a three-day conference, April 25, 26 and 27, with field visits to cement, slate and steel plants in the vicinity of Easton, Pa. W. B. Plank is chairman and D. Knickerbocker Boyd is sec-retary. Headquarters will be at Hotel Easton. Wednesday' will be cement day. In the forenoon A. S. T. M. Committee D-16 will meet and after luncheon the delegates will visit the Martin Creek plants of the Alpha Portland Cement Co. An evening dinner and general session on cement is being arranged. Thursday morning will be devoted to a technical ses-sion on slate, and the breaking of ground for the new John Markel mining building at Lafayette College. After luncheon various slate quarries will be inspected, the visitors being guests of the companies. In the eve-ning there will be a conference dinner at Hotel Easton with a number of distinguished visitors. Friday will be given over to steel and will include a visit to Lehigh University, an inspection of the plant of the Bethlehem Steel Corp., and a luncheon as guests of the latter.

THIS paper presents the results and analysis of field trials of various magnetic instruments over anomalies ranging from 20 to 5000 gammas of vertical intensity. The following instruments were used: Askania vertical magnetometer, Wolfson vertical magnetometer (model M-I), Hotchkiss Superdips (used both parallel to and normal to the magnetic meridian, with several settings of the "sigma" angle), Lake Superior dip needle, and the dipping circle for measurements of inclination. The change in inclination over the measured anomalies ranged up to 4°; this caused pronounced changes in sensitivity of the Hotchkiss Superdip oriented parallel to the magnetic meridian. The variable sensitivity not only gives apparent displacement of crests of anomalies, particularly at high sensitivities, but also makes the data difficult or impossible to use in preparation of iso-anomaly maps. This weakness in field performance of the Superdip is shown to be eliminated by orienting the instrument normal to the magnetic meridian and measuring vertical intensity only, which in the latitude of upper Michigan is equal to 97 pct of the total intensity. The dip needle is seen to be relatively ineffectual for location of anomalies of less than 400 gammas.

BY COMBINING the sessions on reduction and refining of copper, lead and zinc it was possible to devote an entire day to nonferrous metallurgy. Four interesting papers were presented at the morning session and four more in the afternoon. In the discussion of papers on copper, F. R. Pyne acted as chairman, with H. M. Shepard as vice-chairman, whereas for those on lead and zinc, F. F. Colcord acted as chairman, with C. R. Hayward as vice-chairman. The paper by P. D. I. Honeyman on the smelting of raw concentrates in the reverberatory furnace was presented by Mr. Pyne and discussed by Messrs. Mazany and Hayward. The interesting paper by E. S. Bardwell, com- paring the use of various fuels in copper-refining furnaces at Great Fails, Mont., was presented by Mr. Shepard and discussed by Messrs. Boggs, Gronningsater and Hayward. That by R. G. Knickerhocker, describing the stationary basic copper converter at Messina, Transvaal, was presented by Mr. Pyne, together with a written discussion by c. R. Kuzell, of the United Verde Copper co. It was an interesting illustration of how well-known processes may sometimes be modified to fit into unusual conditions.

A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable ' any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. THE Three Kids mine, some six miles east of Henderson, Nev., is in a typical southwest desert area, with high dry summer heat and cool to cold winter seasons. The manganese deposit was located during World War I.' During this period 15,000 to 20,000 tons of ore assaying up to 41 pct manganese were shipped. Interest in the deposit was not revived until the middle thirties, when experiments on the ore were initiated. Test work indicated possible recovery of only 70 pct by flotation, but in 1941 additional work was done at the Boulder City pilot plant of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and also by M. A. Hanna Co. As a result, the Manganese Ore Co. was formed and a plant utilizing the SO2 process was constructed. Numerous operation difficulties ensued, and the plant. was closed when the manganese situation in the country eased. In 1949 Hewitt S. West initiated negotiations to acquire the plant. In 1951 Manganese, Inc., was formed and contract entered into with the General Services Administration to supply 27 million units of metallurgical grade manganese in the form of nodules to the national stockpile. A second contract was made to upgrade 285,000 tons of stockpile ore. Test work was undertaken by the Southwestern Engineering Co. and likewise by the Boulder City pilot plant at the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Results obtained indicated the commercial feasibility of the flotation process. Construction of the plant, which is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, was started in June 1951, and operations on a break-in basis began in September 1952. Apart from the usual starting difficulties two major disasters caused serious setbacks, one a kiln failure in February 1953, and the other a fire that destroyed the flotation building in June of the same year. The nodulizing section of the plant resumed operation in November, and the flotation section in January 1954. The ore minerals are chiefly wad,* with minor amounts of psilomelane, and occur in sedimentary beds of volcanic tuff. The ore is overlain with beds of gypsum which outcrop or may be covered with surface gravel. Intermediate beds of red and white tuff occur frequently with lenses of red and green jasper and stringers of gypsum and calcite. Small amounts of iron are present; lead content averages about 1.0 pct and minute amounts of copper and zinc are found. Barite, celestite, and bentonite are present. Since these are made up of minute asicular crystals, moisture content is very high, averaging about 18 pct. Ore reserves have been estimated at 3 million tons averaging 18 pct Mn2 and up to 5 million tons after grade is dropped to 10 pct Mn. A good part of the orebody was stripped of overburden by the previous operating company . Approximately 50 pct of the ore, representing more than 60 pct of the manganese, can be mined by open-cut methods. A system for underground min- . ing has not yet been decided on. Open-cut mining with benches of 20 ft has proved satisfactory. Although the ore is soft and appears dry and dusty it has a certain resilience, probably due to the porosity and moisture which makes drilling and fragmentation difficult. Wagon drills have been abandoned in favor of the Joy 225-A rotary drill which will put down a 43/4 -in. hole at the rate of 2 ft per min. Holes are spaced in a pattern with 8 to 9-ft centers. Forty percent powder has been used, but better breaking to 2-ft size is obtained with low velocity bag powder of 30 pct strength. Loading is done with one 21/2-yd shovel, and cleanup follows with one D-7 bulldozer. The ore is hauled with Euclid trucks about 1000 ft from the pit to a blending pile, where the daily mine production is spread in layers by bulldozing until approximately one month's mill feed is accumulated. A new pile is then started and mill feed is drawn from the first pile by one 13/4-yd shovel and Euclid trucks, with a haul of approximately 500 ft. Mining is performed by an independent contractor with engineering and supervision by the company staff. Early test work indicated that the manganese could be floated with soap, a wetting agent, and fuel oil to give a recovery of better than 75 pct with a grade of 43 pct Mn. The concentrate when nodulized with coke would upgrade to 46 pct Mn or over, and the lead volatilized to 0.6 pct residual.

The National Labor Board, on June 25, ended its activities preparatory to final, dissolution by the President. No new cases will be heard nor new applications received. Controversies, jointly submitted, that could not be concluded prior to June 30, were assigned to the joint chairmen or a section of the board for disposition. The conclusion of the board's activities marks the passing of. one of the governmental agencies created during the war to further production of war materials. The board was organized under a Presidential proclamation with former President Taft and Frank P. Walsh of Kansas City as joint Chairmen, and with five members representing labor, five employers' representatives, and two members acting for the public. Mr. Walsh resigned soon after the signing of the armistice and was succeeded by Basil M. Manly of Washington. During the year that ended May 31, the hoard received 1245 cases, made awards in 462 cases, dismissed 391 for various cases, referred 315 to specified agencies, and suspended one case. Fifty-three cases remained on the docket because the hoard could not agree, and 23 cases were pending.

There were present eleven Directors, the Secretary and Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and eleven guests. The Secretary, Bradley Stoughton, was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Board of. Directors of the American Bureau of Welding. A communication from a member of the Institute regarding simplified spelling was laid on the table. The following appropriations were made for the year. 1919: $250 to the Institute of Metals Division, $250 to the St. Louis Section, $100 to the Columbia Section. An invitation was received from the Western Society of Engineers to the Institute to use the facilities of that society during the A. I. M. E. Meeting in Chicago. The Bulletin of the Institute was presented to the French Congress of Engineers. There were elected twenty-eight members, eighteen associates, and three junior associates. The status of one member was changed from junior associate to associate. Four members were reinstated. An extension of time was granted to one member for payment of dues. The dues of four members on active military duty were suspended. Dues were remitted of four members who have been paying over thirty years, and who are each over seventy years of age.

WHEN it came time to write a biography of Philip Kraft, we got out a copy of Bartlett's "Familiar Quotations" and looked through the references to Travel, Traveled, Traveler, and Traveling, feeling sure there would be some reference to Mr. Kraft. Sure enough, we found: "Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience." Had Francis Bacon done his writing three and a half centuries later, Mr. Kraft might well have served as the inspiration for that sentence. New Yorker born, he received his B.S. and E. M. degrees from Columbia. In 1912, then 22 years old, he took off for Germany where he spent two years studying at the Royal School of Mines, Berlin, for his Doctor of Engineering degree. Contrary to the Greeley-Soule precept, Mr. Kraft, on his return from Europe, went north to South Porcupine. Ont., working as geologist and mining engineer for the Dome Mine. From South Porcupine his next stop was Washington, D. C., where, during the years the country was in the first World War, he was engaged in war work.

The use of geothermal energy is expanding very rapidly. This type of energy has proven commercially profitable for generation of electricity, for space heating, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants and for recovery of chemicals contained in natural hot water and steam. Two types of geothermal energy sources are recognized: 1) hot springs in regions of nearly normal heat flow that tap a deep reservoir through which water moves slowly to a hot springs conduit and then rapidly to the surface; 2) hyperthermal areas in which the water is heated by a relatively concentrated heat source related to volcanicity. If there is a geologic trap that provides a geologic analog to a steam boiler, as at Larderello, Italy, the hyperthermal area will have a convecting system that develops superheated water at relatively shallow depth and may provide natural steam in large quantities. If a hyperthermal area is to be productive for a long time, the underflow into the reservoir should be slow enough to allow the heat source and convective system to heat the underflow to the working temperature, and the production rate must not exceed this rate of underflow. A model based on a typical aquifer suggests that the rate of movement of water through the reservoir be such that a few years are spent in transit between isotherms that are spaced about 2°F apart. The possibility of finding blind geothermal areas is illustrated by discussion of the techniques developed in evaluating the subsurface temperatures in the East Tintic district of Utah where a map of isotherms at water level (2000 to 2000 ft below the surface) shows that a hyperthermal area may exist a short distance southeast of the mining district. Very nearly all of the energy that man currently uses comes ultimately from the sun's radiation. This includes water power, fuels such as wood, peat, coal and petroleum, the wind and all our animal power. In the paper summarizing a conference on solar energyl6 the average amount of solar energy received daily on the earth is taken at about 1 cal per m2 per min or slightly less than 2 pcal per cm2 per sec; this is almost exactly the amount of energy on the average that the earth liberates in regions of normal geothermal gradient due to its own internal heating. In many places, however, the energy released is many times the average and in some of these hyperthermal areas, geothermal steam is used for generation of electricity, and hot springs are used for heating buildings and private dwellings, process heating, auxiliary heating of water in conventional steam power plants, and chemicals may be recoverable from both hot water and steam. The use of hot springs waters for heating houses goes back hundreds of years but until recently was confined to a few dwellings close to the hot springs. In Korea, some houses had hot spring water channeled through conduits in the floor centuries ago and thus the Koreans can be credited with pioneer development of radiant heating. In Iceland at present nearly a third of the population uses natural thermal water for domestic heating." The Reykjavik system pipes hot spring water at about 94°C throughout the city and has devised insulated double pipes that allow the water to be piped for some 25 km with a drop of only 1°C for every 5 km. The actual cost to the Icelandic consumer is only one-third the cost of heating by imported coal and yet the industry is one of the most profitable in Iceland. The most profitable use of geothermal energy has been its conversion into electricity which can be transmitted economically much greater distances than hot water. The largest installation at the present time is that at Larderello, Italy, where the Count of Larderello began to experiment in the production of electricity from geothermal steam 60 years ago — in 1904. He installed his first steam turbine, with a capacity of only 250 kw, in 1912 as the result of a local quarrel with the power company which furnished the current required in the Larderello chemical industry - an industry that then dated back nearly a century. As experience was gained in drilling deep holes to tap geothermal steam and in converting it to electric power, the capacity of the installation of Larderello gradually increased, but was all destroyed by the Germans during their retreat from Italy in the closing

INTRODUCTION Since the infancy of in situ uranium mining, a growing number of hydrometallurgical processes have been incorporated into pilot and commercial scale flowsheets. Although initial design efforts were geared toward maximizing uranium recovery and minimizing plant and wellfield flow circuit maintenance, recent emphasis has shifted to improved means of water conservation and aquifer restoration. As mining units approached depletion, evaporation ponds reached minimum freeboard, and state and federal agencies demanded proof of groundwater restoration, processes including mixed bed and conventional ion exchange, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis were adopted by the industry. These units served the additional function of reducing process bleed flows during mining in states where the deep disposal well permitting ice remains unbroken. This report concerns the use of electrodialysis as an alternative to the more conventional processes used in in situ mining. In addition to a brief history and description of the process, a comparison to reverse osmosis and operational data derived from testing an Ionics, Inc. 1.31 x 10-3 m /s (30,000 gallon/day) unit at the Teton-Nedco Leuenberger Research and Development pilot will be presented. HISTORY Commercially practicable electrodialysis was contingent upon the development of synthetic ion exchange membranes in 1940's. In 1952, Ionics Inc. demonstrated that the process was amenable to the treatment of salt and brackish water and, in 1954, made their first commercial sale. The following decade saw several major electrodialysis unit sales which were generally targeted for use on private or municipal potable water treatment. Major increases in membrane desalting unit capacities, facilitated by technological advances in the reserve osmosis industry, were noted during the 1970's. The development of polarity reversing electrodialysis equipment which reduced feed pretreatment requirements, increased water recovery rates, and simplified unit operation, kept Ionics Inc. competetive in the water treatment industry. Engineering advances which incorporated automated equipment, non-corrosive construction materials, and improved ion exchange membranes allowed the electrodialysis process to compete in industrial waste treatment among other commercial markets. PROCESS AND APPARATUS DESCRIPTION The electrodialysis process utilizes direct electrical current passed across a stack of alternating cation and anion selective membranes in order to achieve an electrochemical separation of ionized materials in an aqueous solution. The membrane stack has the appearance of a plate and frame filter press and auxilliary equipment includes solution pumps, electrically actuated valves, filters, piping and a direct current power source. The ion separation membranes are thin sheets of synthetic cation or anion selective resins. Attaching sulfonate or quaternary ammonium groups to the cross linked copolymer structure determines the ion selectivity of the membrane. The membranes are separated from each other in the stack by non-conductive spacers that house flow channels which route the flow tortuously and parallel to the membranes. Direct electrical current passing perpendicularly to the membranes and solution passages attracts cations toward the cathode and anions toward the anode (Figure 1). As the ions from the feed stream pass through the ion selective membranes, they become concentrated in the adjacent brine channel and are retained there by the combined attractive force of the electrode and the repelling force of the next membrane toward the electrode. Limiting factors on the degree of demineralization possible include chemical solubilities in the brine flow and the current density that will produce an unacceptable degree of polarization (Figure 1). Feed or brine solution treatment with complexing agents or acids has been successfully applied to prevent membrane scaling. Polarization can occur when sufficient current density is applied to dissociate water in the ion depleted region of the diluting compartments near the membrane surfaces. Significant polarization is evidenced by large electrical resistances across cell pairs and notable pH differences between diluting and concentrating streams. Limiting current densities have been increased in U.S. manufactured equipment by utilizing tortuous flow paths of relatively high linear velocities thereby promoting continous solution mixing. Energy consumption is due to separating electrolytes and solutions, oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in electrode compartments, overcoming electrical resistance, conversion from AC to DC power, solution pumping and auxiliary equipment actuation. A major improvement to the basic electrodialysis process was applied in 1970 which resulted in frequent, automatic cleaning and descaling of membrane surfaces. The process, polarity reversal, incorporates alternating the cathode and anode on a periodic basis while exchanging product and brine flow channels via electrically actuated values. The reversal reduces the potential of stack plugging with CaCO3 (calcite), CaSO4 (gypsum), and colloidal materials and, in most waters, eliminates feed pre-treatment requirements. The determination of phase relationships and solid-solubility limits can be performed by quantitative metallography in addition to the usual X-ray and metallographic techniques. For example, Beck and smith1 redetermined the ß/ß + ?, ß + ?/?, a/a + ß and a + ß/ß boundaries in the Cu-Zn system by measuring the volume fraction of second phase of several alloys and extrapolating the volume fraction-composition curves to 0 and 100 pct. A modification of this technique is suggested for certain alloy systems, in which it is not necessary to use several alloy compositions but merely one. A single two-phase alloy may be used to determine terminal solubilities in the following manner. The method consists of equilibrating samples of the alloy in a two-phase region adjacent to the desired solid solution, at three or more temperatures, quenching, measuring the volume fraction of second phase present, and applying an analytical treatment to calculate the unknown solid solution. However, two restrictions are inherent in this technique. They are: 1) only certain types of alloy systems are amenable to it, and 2) the general features of the system must be known. The first drawback to the new technique, i.e., that only certain types of systems may be studied, necessitates that the composition at one end of the tieline must either be constant with temperature or well established as a function of temperature. Either a pure metal or some intermetallic compounds fulfill the former. If it is assumed that the volume per gram-atom of a dilute solution is unchanged by the addition of element B to element A, the composition of the solid solution in equilibrium with the second phase may be determined by a material balance and is given by where X, = volume fraction of B in a solid solution Xc = volume fraction of B in compound c X = volume fraction of B in alloy f = volume fraction of second phase The composition by weight may then be determined by the use of tables in the Metals Handbook2 when the density ratio of the solid solution constituents is known. A possible alternative treatment involving the use of the lever rule is less precise than the above tech- nique. This may be used when the density of the solid solution is either known or may be calculated from X-ray data for several compositions. The following analysis is then made. The ratio of compound to solid solution (by weight) may be expressed as follows: x0 - x wc = xr-x = x0 - x r2i Xc -X where Wc = weight of compound w = weight of solid solution x, - alloy composition, weight percent x = unknown composition Xe = compound composition but where V, = volume of compound VA = volume of solid solution pc = density of compound p, = density of solid solution fc = volume fraction of compound fB = volume fraction of solid solution and fs = l -fc then If pc and xc are known, and f, is measured, then pB is the only unknown on the right side of Eq. [4]. The known densities of the solid solution can be plotted for various compositions and can then be expressed mathematically as a function of composition. The use of an expression of pB = f(x)reduces the equation to one unknown—the desired solubility. In the event that the densities are unknown, they may be calculated for various compositions from Vegard&apos;s law. The calculated values are then plotted and expressed analytically. The most accurate results are obtained for Eq. [4] when fc<< 1, i.c., when (x, -x,) - 0, &/l-f, - m; but as fc/l -fc - 0, (xl-x,)- (x, - x), and x - x,,. However, the accuracy with which fc can be measured decreases as f, decreases.3 Alloys for investigation must be selected by a compromise, which is based upon an error analysis of Eq. [4] and knowledge of the accuracy of volume fraction measurements. An examination of phase diagrams in the literature showed many which were amenable to the technique described here. The zirconium-copper system was selected in order to determine the solubility of copper in beta zirconium. Pieces of an alloy which was arc-melted three times were wrapped in tantalum foil and sealed under an argon atmosphere in Vycor tubes. The sealed samples were equilibrated at temperatures from 850" to 960°C for 3 weeks and quenched to room temperature by smashing the capsule in water. Several planes of polish were examined, and

DURING the last winter we have been actively engaged in the School of Mines in search for boracic acid. This has been owing to the fact that Mr. M. W. Iles, assistant in the qualitative laboratory, has discovered a test for that substance which makes its discovery exceedingly simple instead of being, as previously, very difficult. It consists in powdering the mineral, calcining it, then moistening it with sulphuric acid, and heating on a platinum wire until the sulphuric acid is expelled. It is then moistened with glycerin and made to take fire. If boracic acid is present it infallibly gives a green flame. It is not at all surprising, under such circumstances, the test being so easy, that boracic acid has been found by the students in a great many cases where its presence was not previously suspected, and in some where its detection was previously too difficult to warrant looking for it. We were not prepared, however, for its discovery in Lake Superior iron ores, and were disposed at first to think that a mistake had been made. The importance, validity, and acceptability of the Paley Report has become the great issue of the minerals industry. A 12-man panel made up of representatives of various facets of the industry sat down at the 1952 Mining Congress Show in Denver in an attempt to clarify the many opinions currently held concerning the report. Howard Young, deputy administrator of the Defense Materials Procurement Administration, noted that the report had caused more discussion and serious thinking than any other government report, He did not subscribe to the "have not" principle, however, but called it a "need more" principle. Horace M. Allbright, president of U. S. Potash Corp., believes industry should continue to develop the report. He cited the editorial appearing in the September, 1952 edition of Bining Engineering,,, "Don&apos;t Let It Die," as expressing his feelings. Edward Snyder, president of Combined Metals Reduction Corp., says the statistics used in the report were used to promote a false international policy. He sees the report as a master plan for the development of the superstate. He also stated that the-ore reserves given in the Pales, report represent only 10 pct of what is actually available.

Reed, Jr. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, "Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate," July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing "super"-concentrates prepared from magnetite or "blue dust" into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloys to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential. ?
