"The equations for determining microwave field attenuation length and half-power depth in magnetic materials were derived from Maxwell’s equations. The microwave field attenuation length and the half-power depth for a magnetite concentrate were calculated and the temperature dependence of them was determined. It is demonstrated the microwave field attenuation length and the half-power depth highly depend on temperature and decrease with increasing temperature up to 900 °C. The variations of field attenuation length and the half-power depth with temperature indicate the microwave power attenuates much faster than the field strength in materials. The evaluations of field attenuation length and microwave half-power depth can be used to characterize the microwave dissipation behaviors in the sample and optimize the dimensions of the material in microwave heating.IntroductionMicrowave has been applied in materials processing for its distinguished advantages including rapid heat transfer, volumetric and selective heating [1,2]. However, most research work involving microwave heating are confined to non-magnetic materials (e.g. ceramics), with limited attention paid to the heating of mixed property materials (e.g. magnetite and other ferrites) under microwave irradiation [3-5]. Since many magnetic materials exhibit good and even better microwave absorption capability than non-magnetic counterparts, it is quite necessary and deserved to take advantage of this property and then improve the heating efficiency. To achieve this aim, further understanding on the microwave heating mechanism, especially the microwave propagation/dissipation behaviors in magnetic materials is required.The dissipation behavior of microwave in materials has been identified as one of the key factors that affect the efficiency of heating under microwave irradiation and this behavior can be characterized by several parameters. Apart from traditional penetration depth (TEM power penetration depth, Dp = 1/(2*a), where a is the TEM field attenuation factor), two other parameters, field attenuation length (Df) and half-power depth (Dh), are also applied to indicate the microwave dissipation in materials [6].The accurate determination of such parameters can help in optimizing the dimensions of the load in a microwave furnace, producing more uniform heating under microwave irradiation and avoiding thermal runaway."

"Among the thermal characterization of any material, one of the variables to know is the coefficient of thermal conductivity because this value can tell how much heat passes through the material and if the material could be used as an isolator. In order to determine this parameter is required some kind of special equipment and controlled conditions which implies high costs in the development of tests. The present paper proposes a design of a low cost measurement system in order to determine this coefficient with the lower possible error. This equipment was thought for companies or labs where they do not have the economic resources or the infrastructure (environmental controlled labs, heat flux transducers, human resources with specialized knowledge) to do this kind of tests.The system is based on ASTM C 518 - 04 [l] and integrated by two plates (one that contains a thermal resistance and which temperature is controlled by a closed loop controller and the other one with a route of water flow). The thermal resistance is actuated by a relay and a supervisor system checks the total time the relay is on in order to determine the effective power applied to the system. The contact faces of the plates contain a group of temperature sensors connected to a data acquisition system that process and record the temperature in each measurement point.With the power applied to the system, the measurement of temperatures and a process of calibration is possible to determine the coefficient of thermal conductivity. IntroductionWithin the thermal characterization of a material of known variables is the coefficient of heat transfer, since this value can know the amount of heat the material is capable of transferring or isolating. To determine this ratio requires specialized equipment and controlled conditions, which implies high costs in the development of a test. This article proposes a design of a low cost machine to allow closer this coefficient with the least possible error. This equipment was done thinking about companies that do not have the infrastructure (laboratories, controlled environment, heat flux sensors, human resources expertise) and financial resources to conduct these tests."

"This work has for objectives to characterize a waste generated in the form of sludge during the treatment of the effluent of a paper making industry and to evaluate the effect of its incorporation up to 10 wt.% on the properties of a clayey body used for brick production. For the characterization of the waste the following techniques were used: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, differential thermal analysis and termogravimetric analysis with mass spectrometry. Specimens were prepared by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa before firing at 750 °C. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that, in agreement with the characteristics of the waste, its recycling into red ceramic can contribute to decrease the consumption of fuel during the firing stage. However, the waste changes the physical and mechanical properties, generating a deleterious effect on the water absorption and flexural rupture strength of the ceramic.IntroductionAccording to the Brazilian Association of Pulp and Paper, in the last 10 years, the global production of paper grew 35%. Brazil produced 8,2 million tons of paper in 2004 and held the position of the seventh largest world manufacturer of pulp, with about 9,4 million tons per year [1]. The pulp and paper industry generates effluents that present problems related to their disposal, even after the treatment. Among the solid wastes generated by this industry, the main waste is the primary sludge from the effluent treatment plant (ETP).After the initial treatment the decanted solids go through a dewatering stage, generating the solid form denominated primary sludge. This sludge resembles a paper paste of dark gray color when humid, and clear gray color when dry. This primary waste is composed basically of kaolin, pulp, traces of chemical substances and water. This waste generated in the pulp and paper industry depends on the characteristics of the process and of the employed techniques. It can vary significantly from one industrial unit to another, even in the case that the final products are similar. Its composition is approximately 60% of kaolin and 40% of pulp, and these percentages can vary in some moments as a function of the process [2,3]."

In Japan, the municipal solid waste, which amounts to 50 million tons, is generated every year and most of it is incinerated. The fly ash from the municipal waste incineration (the primary fly ash) contains heavy metals, such as lead and zinc, etc., and dioxins. In case of melting, the fly ash from the process (the secondary fly ash) contains high concentration of heavy metals (e.g., Zn; 1-20%, Pb, 1-10%). Metal Mining Agency of Japan launched a four-year project in 1999 to establish the integrated technologies to recover the valuable metals from, and to decontaminate, the primary and secondary fly-ashes in the practical scale by utilizing the existing metallurgical processes and facilities, along with the energy saving. The segregation, flotation and chemical treatment are applied to the treatment of the primary fly ash. The secondary fly ash is treated with MY (Mitsui-type blast furnace) Process after the chlorine removal to recover the heavy metals in the ash, In this paper, the segregation and flotation process for primary fly ash and MF process for secondary fly ash are explained. The main results of experiments done from 1999 to the mid of 2001 to design the pilot plants and to optimize the operating conditions are described. The main results of the experiments are as follows: - The segregation reaction of Cu was confirmed by the experiment on the treatment condition of 800 and 900`C with adding oil cokes and water to the primary fly ash, and 99.98% (toxicity equivalent) of the dioxins were decomposed by the treatment. - Washing tests of secondary fly ash to feed MF resulted that more than 70% of chloride were removed, but still lower than expected, and agglomeration tests were successful by the results of the sufficient strength of briquettes produced though a little more binder for the agglomeration is required than usual operation. - Smelting experiment by downsized MF showed that valuable metals, such as zinc and lead, are recoverable in the furnace dust. Recovery ratios, Zn: 58% and 67%, Pb: 74% and 83%, are accomplished.

"1. Introduction The North-Bohemian Basin area is known for its largest Czech brown coal deposit. About 50% brown coal reserves have been exploited in the North-Bohemian Basin by the mining company of Severoceske doly, a.s. (North Bohemian Mines, j.s.c.) today. The opencast mining of brown coal naturally led to vast landscape damages. Therefore reclamation work has acquired great significance. The specific feature of Severoceske doly, a.s. mining is the fact that the mining has been realized in two geologically absolutely different localities. This fact demands even rather different methods of reclamations. The main problem at Doly Bilina localities is the occurrence of overburden rocks from the series of rocks of coal seams. These rocks are texturally light but large amounts of coal (cca 5 %) and sulphur (cca below 3 %) which makes the soil reaction extremely acid. If they appear on the surface of the dump, they create a phytotoxic area, reclamation of which requires special methods. Rocks from Doly Nastup Tusimice localities are more suitable to reclamation use, but texturally extremely heavy rocks with large fraction of physical clays appear there that can generate a sterile soil area. Their reclamation requirements are completely different from those on Doly Bilina phytotoxic areas. That is the reason of the application of some non – traditional restoration methods. This report briefly summarises the experience in application of fertilizable soils, power plant stabilizer, power plant ash and aerial sowing of charlock. The results are documented by the monitoring of the physical, mineralogical and pedological parameters of rocks in testing areas.2. Properties of Overburden Rocks in Opencast Mines Bilina and Libous The reclamation work methodology in the North Bohemian Basin is above all determined by the properties of overburden rocks which occur in the top horizon of the reclaimed sites. The research of the rocks reclamation properties dealt with four current mining localities in the central part of the basin. It concerned the Bilina and Libous mines. This chapter states the stratigraphic status properties of these sites with respect to reclamation availability. The total status of the area of interest is shown in the figure No. 1."

"The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. This paper describes the development of the automated Gaspe Puncher, its installation at the Horne Smelter, and the results of its operation after several months."

"In order to obtain basic data for the development of highly thermally conductive composite materials, the thermal conductivity of a resin composite material with an Aluminum Nitride filler was assessed. Several different measurement techniques such as the xenon flash and the temperature wave thermometric analysis method were employed to gather data on these composites. An excellent match between theoretical and experimental data was achieved by employing a predictive expression that takes into account the effect of percolation on thermal conductivity.IntroductionA thermal solution composite is made by incorporating dense inorganic fillers with high thermal conductivity into a resin. Because the composite materials have high thermal conductivities, they have been used in electrical products that generate excessive thermal energy during operation, such as inverters, amplifiers and motor drivers. They function as electrically insulating and thermally conducting parts of the electric modules. As the uses of thermal solutions are expanded, composites of higher thermal conductivities will be required. The aim of this work was to investigate, evaluate, and try to predict the influence of key parameters on thermal conductivity and diffusivity. This was achieved by analyzing the effect of both volume fraction and shape of Aluminum Nitride ceramic fillers and measuring the thermal conductivity. In addition, the influence of percolation on thermal conductivity is considered. The thermal conductivity of the composites is discussed by employing a predictive equation using literature data of thermal conductivities for both the filler and resin. As well as thermal conductivity measurements the effect of volume fraction of the filler was also explored.ExperimentalSpecimen PreparationThe composite samples were prepared from silicone resin and Aluminum Nitride (AlN) fillers. The AlN fillers with an average particle size of 20 µm are shown in Figure 1. The mean diameters of the AlN particles used are given in Table I. For comparison the AlN fillers with an average particle size of 5 µm are shown in Figure 2. A planetary centrifugal mixer was used for simultaneously dispersing the components uniformly and de-aerating the mixture. After mixing, these materials were placed in a silicone rubber case and cured at 150 °C for 1 hour."

"Fibers of giant bamboo (Dendrocalmus Giganteus) are amongst the strongest lignocellulosic fibers. Although studies have been already performed, limited information exists on the mechanical properties of polymeric composites reinforced with continuous and aligned giant bamboo fibers. This work evaluates the tensile strength of this type of composite. Standard tensile specimens were fabricated with up to 30% of fibers aligned along the specimen's length. The fibers were press molded with a commercial epoxy resin mixed with a hardener and cured for 24 hours at room temperature. The specimens were tested in an Instron machine and the fracture surface analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The tensile strength increased significantly with the amount of giant bamboo fiber reinforcing the composite. This performance can be associated with the difficult of rupture imposed by the fibers as well as with the type of cracks resulting from the bamboo fiber/epoxy matrix interaction, which prevents rupture to occur.IntroductionDue to growing concern about the ambient impacts from industrial activities, our society is ever more using environmentally friendly materials. In this regard, cellulose-based natural fibers, known as lignocellulosic fibers, become a promising solution. Nowadays, they are being considered as a substitute for synthetic fibers, such as glass fiber, used by the industry on a large scale [1-5]. The application of these natural fibers is also motivated by many advantages like good toughness and less wear of equipment used in the processing of composites. In addition, such composites are environmentally friendly because they are renewable, biodegradable and neutral with respect to C02 emissions, the main responsible for global warming and climate changes. [3,5,6].Lignocellulosic fibers also have some disadvantages in relation to synthetic fibers such as the difficulty of coupling with polymer matrices, due to the hydrophilic character of fiber and the hydrophobic nature of the matrix, as well as dimensional heterogeneity [ 4,5]. This last one is characteristic of the nature of this material and constitutes an obstacle to the use of these fibers in certain projects, especially those that aim high performance. The above mentioned disadvantages are worrisome reasons for the occurrence of reduction in the strengthening capacity, as indicated by the rule of mixtures for composites [7]."

The facility accepts metal-laden process waste streams and produces various "synthetic ores" which are sold back to industry. Steel manufacture in VOD procedure needs a very attentive correlation and pursuit of the technological stages ,on the background of keeping the influence factors within best performances zones. For a better co-ordination of the main stages specific to this process ,this work presents a detailed study of the optimization possibilities for each stages ,beginning with the furnace charging ,going on with the pre-aftinage and aftinage stages in the electrical furnace and then with the refinement stages in the VOD installation. One has intended the effective emphasis of the main influence factors with global implications on the process and especially on the purity and quality of the stainless steel ,Among the main novelties proposed by this work , we can emphasize the following: - a computer assisted charging method ,with the possibility of using a large scale of wastage, also respecting the density proportions of the components of the charges; - the advanced recuperation of the elements of the charge by reducing the combustion of the valuable elements ; - the optimization of the oxygen blast conditions and of the aftinage stage ,by establishing some calculations concerning critical carbon content , that requires the oxidation to be continued very carefully; - the simulation of the thermic and chemical parameters by modeling the alloying process of the stainless steel in the case of some large amounts of additions.

"Preparation and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmission spectra of aluminum fluoroberyllate glasses, MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-A1Fr BeF2 (MCSA-Be) and MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-AlFrYFrBeF2 (MCSAY-Be), were studied. The influence of YF3 and BeF2 on the thermal stabilization against crystallization and VUV transmittance was investigated. With increasing the BeF2 content, the crystallization tendency decreased and the absorption edge shifted to shorter wavelength in the MCSA-Be and MCSAY-Be glasses. The MCSA-20Be glass composition exhibited the shortest wavelength UV absorption edge (-147 nm) and the highest transmittance at 157 nm (60% for 2 mm sample thickness). The transmission values at 157 nm and the slope (steepness) of the absorption edge were found to be significantly influenced by the trace amount of Fe2+ derived from the BeF2 raw materials.IntroductionPure beryllium fluoride is known to be an only fluoride that forms one component glass on cooling from the molten state and is structurally similar to silica with [SiO4]4- tetrahedra. Molten BeF2 is highly viscous with a viscosity of about 106 poise near its liquidus temperature at 550""C[l]. The addition of modifying fluorides such as LiF, NaF or KF to BeF2 substantially decreases the viscosity[2]. Glass forming region of binary fluoroberyllate glasses has been mainly reported by several authors [3]. LiFBeF2 binary system is structually analogy for Mg0-Si02 system from their phase diagram and ratio of ionic radius for each cation and anion, respectively. LiF-BeF2 binary glasses seems to be promising candidates for the extreme deep vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmitting optical materials owing to their larger band gap. However, it is chemically unstable, and so, have no practical application for lens systems in micro lithography equipments and substrate materials for F2 (157nm) excimer laser[4]. There are also few reports on the VUV transparency of multicomponent aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses from the view point of their compositional dependencies. The purpose of this paper is to prepare deep VUV transmitting optical materials and determine the optimum glass compositions for aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses investigating their thermal stabilization against crystallization."

"A new process of near net shape continuous casting of metal pipe has been put out. The specialty of the process is that no inner core is used. The principle of the process has been presented, and the effect of several factors on the thickness of the pipe has been investigated experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the temperature and the level of the molten metal, cooling intensity of the mold, and the velocity of casting influenced the thickness of the pipe apparently. In order to improve evenness of the thickness of the pipe, the mold was dedicatedly designed, and special methods were taken. By this process, a metallic material like ""bamboo"" was fabricated.IntroductionMetal pipe is a widely used material. Up to now, many processes have been put out to produce the pipe. However, the processes are usually expensive and inefficient. For instance, the welding pipe, which is most widely used, is produced through continuous casting of slab, rolling of the slab into sheet, and welding, with several times of heating and processing. Continuous casting of pipe can not produce small diameter of pipe, which is mostly needed, due to the inner core. Even though. OCC process is novel in fabricating the pipe with small diameter, it is inefficient. In this paper, the no-inner core continuous casting of pipe was proposed. With this process, pipe with small diameter can be produced efficiently. The influence of several parameters on the thickness and evenness of piper wall. With this process, a ""bamboolike"" pipe was fabricated.ExperimentThe experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. I. It is composed of mold, furnace, melt level adjuster, and dummy pipe. In the process, the level of the melt was adjusted at a proper position, then the mold along with the dummy pipe was inserted into the melt in a certain depth. The melt in the mold began solidifying, forming a solid shell. After that, the dummy pipe was pulled upward in a certain speed, drawing the solid shell out of the mold. Thus, a pipe was continuously cast."

In this paper, ductile iron material with different content of niobium was prepared by a scientific melting method. Image Analysis Software was used to studied the effect of niobium microalloying on both pearlite content and pearlite lamellar spacing in ductile iron quantitatively. The results showed that the addition of a small amount of niobium could increase the pearlite content and decrease pearlite lamellar spacing of ductile iron effectively.

"In a bid to renovate its Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery and to establish a leading production unit in terms of global competitiveness, Nippon Mining & Metals undertook major - restructuring efforts since 1993.One of its themes was the shift from a two-flash furnaces operation to a single-flash furnace operation. The shift was successfully completed in 1996 while maintaining the production at the same level (330,000 metric tons per year of copper) by adopting such measures as improvements in pneumatic concentrate dryers, the concentrate feeding system, concentrate burners, the furnace cooling system, and a new cryogenic oxygen plant was constructed.With a view to realizing high matte grade operation (at 65%Cu) and increasing the concentrate feeding rate, further steps were taken the capacity of waste heat boiler was expanded and technical improvements were added, including optimization of the smelting reaction in the furnace shaft. As a result, the smelting capacity, as of the year 2000, has increased to 450,000 metric tons per year of copper.IntroductionThe feed rate to the flash furnace was doubled to 140 t/h from 70 t/h in 1996. Teething problems, as a result of the renovation, were almost solved by the end of 1996, and the operation of the single furnace operation has become stable.The main theme was the shift from a two-flash furnaces operation to a single-furnace operation to maintain the production capacity at the same level, namely 330,000 metric tons of copper per year. Then, in a bid to further renovate the Saganoseki Smelter & Refinery and to establish a leading production unit in terms of global competitiveness, further enhancement of the flash furnace's productivity was planned.The purpose of this plan was to raise the copper production capacity to 450,000 mtpy building on the potentialities of existing plants and without installing new equipment."

Seeking to replace carbon-black as filler of rubber in the production of vulcanized goods, researchers from University of São Paulo have studied different materials types as minerals, vegetal or wastes agricultural and industry. Results of rubber composites filled with MA1 a waste of mineral treatment provided by Esper Industries are presented. MA1 was characterized through X-ray diffraction; Thermal analysis; Scanning Electronic Microscopy; and others laboratory methods. The composite and shaped masses were evaluated by these methods plus their mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break and hardness. Exceptional results were obtained in the mechanical properties evaluated, better than those obtained with the traditional carbon-black. Seeing the kind of material used as filler, it can conclude that the environmental benefit is present, as well as economic development, giving credibility to the use of these alternative material in replacement carbon black.

"The sintering properties of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate(VTC) was studied in this paper. Through the optimizing the sintering process of VTC, the suitable granulation moisture and coke proportion were determined. The sintering velocity decreased from 23.05 mm/min to 18.22 mm/min. With the increase of VTC proportion from 0 to 46%, the specific productivity and tumbler index were respectively decreased from 1.55 t/(m2·h) to 1.21 t/(m2·h), and 62.93% to 57.73%. The temperature of liquid phase formations of mixtures increased, the amount of liquid lowered, and the content and sharp of sintering mineral gradually changed with the increase of VTC ,these lead that sinter quality became worse.IntroductionIn recent years, the steel industry of China is developing rapidly. And the steel production was 627 million tons in 2010. At present, the resources of vanadium-titanium magnetite concentrate(VTC) was about 14.4% of the total national iron reserves of China[1]. VTC has been used as sintering material by Magang, Chenggang and Pangang. The amount of VTC in Pangang is maximum. However, there exist many problems in VTC sintering, which involve in high specific productivity, bad sintering tumbler strength and high energy consumption[2~5]. That’s why the proportion of VTC is limited in sintering.The high quality of iron ore resources is worse in China. Therefore, it’s necessary to study the properties of VTC sintering, and to find out the reason how the VTC ratio affect the sinter performance. Purpose and significance of the research is to get high-quality sinter with the proportion of VTC greatly raised."

Fundamentals of blast furnace smelting of low grade copper and precious metal scrap and residues are reviewed with emphasis on emission control, by-products produced, slag cleaning for high recovery of metal values and the evolution of an off-gas system to eliminate hydrocarbons that result from decomposition of plastics in the blast furnace- charge. Problems with tin, antimony and nickel in the smelter-refining cycle are discussed.

The main aim of the electric furnace treatment in the primary copper industry is the reduction of valuable metals such as zinc, lead or copper itself. On the one hand legal restrictions for the further use of the treated slag are constantly getting stricter while on the other every type of loss in the oxidic phase leads to economic disadvantages. In order to fully understand and to improve the process, kinetics during the reduction play an essential role. In the first part, this paper highlights the theoretical background of the reduction process, while the following chapters present experimental aspects and results from laboratory scale trials at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. In addition, the comparison between the chemical reaction and the diffusion model plays a continuously important role. By investigating the reducibility of electric furnace slag, process adaptions and ameliorations are developed.

The Zinc Corporation of America Monaca smelter continues to use the St. Joe-developed electrothermic process for producing zinc metal and zinc oxide. As we enter the 1990s, the electrothermic process flexibility permits treatment of larger quantities? and lower-grade zinc-bearing recycle materials. A new sinter plant having one large sinter machine will increase sinter feed production required to meet our capacity target of 150,000 tons per year.
