The activity of the ?Hydrogen Group? of Padova University, addressed to the study of materials for solid state hydrogen storage, is illustrated. Various Mg-based materials have been considered and are being studied: a) MgH2 and 0.5% mol Nb2O5 mixture ball milled under argon atmosphere; b) Mg-Ni-Fe intermetallic compounds prepared by short time ball milling of ribbons obtained by melt spinning and by long time ball milling of a mixture of MgH2, Ni and Fe powders; c) MgH2 ball milled in argon with Mm-Ni-Al (Mm = La-rich mishmetal) and Zr-Cr-Fe catalyst alloys. All the samples have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (Rietveld refinement) before and after hydrogen absorption/desorption cycling and tested with a Sievert apparatus as regarding their thermodynamic and kinetic properties.

The technology for the extraction of zinc from zinc residues, such as zinc ashes, drosses and metallurgical flue dusts, by way of ammonium chloride solutions is well established, at least at the laboratory and bench scale levels. (3, 4) Zinc is soluble in ammonium chloride solutions in the form of zinc diammine chloride. Its solubility depends upon the concentrations and temperatures employed. The procedure and the equipment required are simple, and they can be applied either to small or large operations. As a by-product, zinc diammine chloride is produced with extremely low impurities in quantities which are stoichiometrically proportional to the zinc removed. The technology has been applied experimentally to galvanized steel residues. The dezincing results, including removal performance, energy and reagents required, and by-products are summarily presented in this paper.

"One of the critical variables to be controlled during arc welding is the size or geometry of the weld pool. The measurement of pool geometry has become an increasingly important problem with the advance of welding automation and control, and this paper addresses that problem. The basic concept of pool size estimation via measurement of pool dynamics is presented. The theory underlying this concept is discussed and is followed by a review of the current work in this area. It is concluded that pool dynamics can be characterized by natural frequencies of oscillation, for stationary welds, and that these can be measured by appropriate signal processing performed on the arc voltage. However, it appears that only full penetration welds show a strong correlation between weld size and natural frequency. Also, the extension of these results to the realistic case of moving welds has yet to be considered in detail. Nonetheless, this method of in-process measurement for real-time weld process control is still quite attractive where applicable since it can be accomplished simply by modifying the arc current schedule and by signal processing of the arc voltage.INTRODUCTUIONThe study of welding process control has been dominated by research into methods of in processing sensing of the weld pool geometry. While it has been shown feasible to measure the topside pool geometry using video methods [1,2], the penetration or backside bead width have remained elusive quantities. This is particularly true if a topside sensor location is required.The concept of using weld pool motion as a pool geometry sensing method was proposed by Hardt et al. [3] and later demonstrated by Hardt and Zacksenhouse [5] and Richardson and Renwick [6]. The concept is based on the fluid dynamics of a pool constrained by a solid container and by significant surface tension forces (i.e. a small shallow pool, not a ""pond"" or ""lake""). Such a pool, if subjected to external forces, will exhibit a surface motion is a function of that force, the properties of the fluid, the surface tension, and the shape of the container. Thus, if this motion can be excited and measured, and the relationship to the pool geometry determined, a means of sensing pool shape will exist."

Bacterial oxidation of an arsenopyritic gold-ore .concentrate was carried out with continuous-flow .operation in 14-liter, mechanically agitated reactors. Samples from the slurry reactors were separated into solid and liquid fractions and analyzed separately to determine the electrochemical rates of sulfide conversion by the bacteria and the rates of direct bacterial oxidation of sulfide. The rates of the individual mechanisms are compared to the overall rates of biooxidation in the continuous-flow slurry reactors. The results show that the commonly hypothesize4 direct and indirect mechanisms of biooxidation both play a significant role in the bacterial oxidation of sulfide ores.

The decomposition of methane has been studied experimentally in contact with various oxides at elevated temperatures. For each oxide, the temperature at which the cracking starts has been determined. No correlation was found to exist between the temperature for the onset of cracking for a given oxide and the affinity for carbon of the oxide's metallic component. In terms of potential for using methane as a reducing agent, calculations are presented that indicate that the suitability of an oxide for such reduction depends on the desired methane+oxide reaction being more energetically favourable than the methane+methane=ethylene/acetylene reactions.

At Trail, British Columbia, Cominco's zinc leaching and solution purification processes include direct pressure leaching of zinc concentrates, leaching of fume from the lead smelter, leaching of calcine and electrolyte purification. These processes have been adapted to match the unique characteristics of Cominco's integrated zinc and lead operations. Recent modifications include changes to the purification process and iron-residue handling circuits. In 1997, a new five-compartment autoclave, complete with ancillary equipment, was installed in the pressure leaching plant. This paper discusses these changes, the current flowsheet and further improvements.

"The three dimensional current distribution on the rectangular cathode is predicted using a boundary element method with a linear element of trigonal type. The effect of cell geometry and anode shape on current distribution is simulated. Calculated results compare well with experimental results. The proper combination of anode size and distance between electrodes increase the current uniformity.The importance of electrodeposition as a fabrication technology in the electronics industry is large and growing. The main advantages of this wet processing method, in comparison to other dry processing methods, lie in its high yield, rapid processing and low cost. In nearly every application of electrodeposition the pursuit of deposit uniformity, especially thickness uniformity, has been technically imperative. The thickness uniformity of the deposit depends largely on the current distribution over the cathode. The current distribution is primarily determined by the geometrical characteristics of the electrodes and the cell. Also the polarization at the electrode surface and the mass transfer affect the current distribution.The current distribution is an important consideration for those involved in designing electrochemical systems and electroplating systems in particular. Although it is important, the common practice in industry is to use trial and error method to design the cell that optimize the uniformity of current distributions in electroplating. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the useof boundary element method to predict three-dimensional current distribution in rectangular cell.The calculation of the current distribution is possible by various numerical techniques, which include the finite difference method (FDM)1, the finite element method (FEM)2, and the boundary element method (BEM)3,4. These methods of the numerical calculation have various problems, respectively, but the BEM is considered to be the most efficient. This is due to the fact that the BEM has the advantage of solving field equations only on the surface of a calculation domain. A good comparison between the BEM and the FEM for the secondary current distribution in a Hull cell was made by Matlosz et al.5The fundamentals on the theory of current distribution in electroplating are well-established in the literature by a number of authors.6, 7, 8 However, a small fraction of these works have been specially addressed to three-dimensional analysis, and, mostly thel·10 have focused on the problem qualitatively rather than quantitatively.Extending the previous work to three-dimension, we developed the program for the quantitative calculation of 3-dimensional current distribution using a boundary element method with a linear element of trigonal type. Integrals with singularity from the fundamental solution have been analytically computed and it is shown in detail in the Iiterature11. This paper deals with the three dimensional current distribution for the electrode position of copper in a cubic type cell and the effect of anode shape, size and the distance between electrodes on current distribution is studied."

"The paper has as a studying object the issue of effective management of gasses’ heating and dusts in reductive melting process in lead (Pb) metallurgy. It also analyses the issue related to the usage and recycling of dusts and gasses in all pyro-metallurgical processes of technical lead production. The paper contains the analysis of technological process of separation of humidity, gasses, and dusts of valuable remainders in “Trepça” plant. Paper has the results of theoreticalexperimental studying, analytical and graphical of gasses thermal balance depending on height and composition of load, and the coke quantity on load for reductive melt in “Water-Jacket” furnaces. With thermal balance, having into consideration all parameters of heat in entry and exit depending on aforementioned factors we aimed to optimize the parameters of the process, keeping the attention to the minimization of energy consumption, and the overall influence on environment.1. IntroductionThe upper part of the furnace which is the study point of this paper lies from the reactions zone of Water-Jacket furnace and it also includes the furnace neck. In this zone has been elaborated the zonal material balance referenced third in the row. The separation of humidity, dusts, gases and lead with gases depends on many parameters like temperature, load composition, and height of load inserted in the furnace, and also the height of preheating zone in Water-jacket furnace. Lead oxidizes in reaction zone of the furnace and exhales with gases like dusts and small particles after which falls in worthy storage of Trepça plant and has negative effects in environment, and economic stability of reductive melting process of Water-jacket furnace. Thermal balance of gases in this zone depends on many factors; height and load composition, coke quantity in a load. The calculation has been done as the standard methodology of thermal calculation is done; moreover, by using a computer for mathematical models which enables very accurate results. We must emphasize that acquired and used heat in reaction zone and melted materials is calculated in others studies, so their influence in preheating zone is assumed."

The hydrochloric leaching of chrysotile tailings and soapstone powders) is discussed. This two materials are magnesium compounds associated with carbonates and iron oxides. In this work the chemical and physical characterization of formers is presented and the thermodynamic analyses of leaching is carried out. Magnesium extraction is almost complete for chrysotile tailings while, for soapstone powders, one can be reached 60%. The behavior of iron and calcium impurities is discussed.

The knowledge of the flow field inside a continuous casting mold is essential to improve operational efficiency of the process and also to achieve better inclusion control. Physical modeling, PIV technique and CFD have been employed to assess the velocity distribution in the metal- slag interface region in a slab mold. The analysis of results shows how higher casting velocity and lower immersion depth of submerged nozzle can lead to higher turbulence in the slag-metal interface. The effects of density difference between slag and metal and interfacial tension between the phases have been highlighted.

"In order to expeditiously produce defect-free metallic components in materials processing applications, the relationship between the process parameters and the product properties needs to be well understood while minimizing the production engineering iterations. To achieve this goal, a realistic mathematical formulation of the process should be carried out and an appropriate numerical modeling of various phenomena occurring in such process should be implemented. The materials processing of transforming the molten material into a finished metallic component involves fluid flow and solidification/melting. In the present paper, a finite element based analysis of the fluid flow ·and solidification/melting phenomena in cavities is presented and the various issues in modeling these phenomena are discussed. These transport phenomena play an important role in determining the final characteristics and material properties of the part by affecting the formation of defects and microstructure. A realistic numerical modeling of these phenomena can significantly reduce the rejection rates during the process and can increase the quality of the final product.IntroductionDuring the intelligent materials processing of various metallic components, it is often required to have a thorough knowledge of the behavior of the transport phenomena involved in this process. This is due in large to the coupling that exists between the transport phenomena and the final material properties of the components produced during materials processing. This interrelationship demands that the pertinent transport phenomena in the form of fluid flow and solidification/melting be studied and predicted accurately. In many materials processing applications, the fluid flow is in the form of either a forced convection free surface flow intended to fill a cavity or a natural convection flow resulting from the gravity when the cavity is filled. In either case, the phase change in the form of solidification/melting is also involved in order to complete the process. However, the thermal history during this phase change has a direct impact on the material properties of the final part and the possible defect formation that may be involved. This thermal history itself is dependent on the nature of the fluid flow during the earlier stages of the process. As such, there is a coupling between the fluid flow, phase change, microstructure, and defect formation in the resulting component. It is therefore necessary to analyze these phenomena in order to find optimum methods to produce good quality parts by minimizing the defects that may be generated. Such an analysis can result in the development of appropriate numerical models for the process that can facilitate the economical and timely manufacturing of various components with high consistency. The present paper discusses the issues related to the transport phenomena encountered during materials processing of components engineered largely by using various combination of convective fluid flow and solidification/melting in cavities."

A model of the homogeneous chemistry and transport processes within the separator of a chrome-alum electrowinning cell is introduced, discussed, and compared to experiment. The influence of diffusion, electromigration, and convection are included; it is found that convection was the dominant mode of transport for the experimental conditions. Simulation results explain experimental observations concerning an apparent disappearance of dichromate ions produced at the cell anode. The relation between potential drop across the diaphragm and the current and fluid flow is also illustrated. The model is used to recommend future experimental and theoretical work.

An industrial wastewater, including plating wastes, is treated with sodium sulfide and ferrous sulfate to form a sulfide-oxide precipitate containing chromium and other toxic metals. Hydrocarbons, in the water, coat the sulfide-oxide particles, impeding metal recovery. Froth flotation, without reagent addition, was found to recover 93.9% of the solids from the sludge with simultaneous rejection of 89% of the water. Methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) improved recovery and potassium amyl xanthate improved both recovery and grade. The process design has wastewater feed (without MIBC) to the rougher circuit. The rougher concentrate is conditioned with MIBC and fed to a cleaner circuit to achieve a high grade concentrate. About 95% of the water is recirculated to the waste treatment plant.

"With the continuous depletion of conventional sources of non ferrous metals, low grade complex sulphide deposits have been regarded as an alternative source of supply of zinc, copper, lead and also silver and gold. In spite of very important efforts in research in this domain it is still a long way to go in order to achieve reliable technological solutions both in ore dressing and metallurgical treatments which enable these complex materials to be regarded as commodities. The RLE process to treat bulk concentrates such as those obtained from portuguese ores, under development at LNETI and QUIMIGAL premises, combines experienced unit operations and innovative configurations and is an effective contribution for the future use of these materials. The results of three years of experimental work and main conclusions on the overall feasibility of the process are presented.IntroductionIn spite of the very well-known problems associated to the development of complex sulphide deposits, the economical importance of the enormous reserves of these materials, widespread all over the world, is so evident that its future use as source of supply of basic and precious metals and other minor elements is almost unavoidable.Critical steps in that direction are mainly concerned with favourable economical conditions and sound metallurgical practice for the treatment of nonferrous metals concentrates, which are nowadays still considered as non-conventional raw materials.Since Portugal is one of the countries where these orebodies occur more extensively, Portuguese authorities have dedicated since the beginning of the seventies, a big effort on finding economical and reliable processes for the recovery of copper, lead, zinc and also gold and silver, and for this purpose, several alternatives on ore dressing and metallurgical processing were studied, however without full sucess.Five years ago LNETI, a research laboratory, and QUIMIGAL, a chemical company, both state owned, decided to launch a research programme for the development of a metallurgical process for the treatment of NFM concentrates, which received financial support from NATO under its programme ""Science for Stability""."

Fresh cyanide solution was treated by near UV light with the assistance of photocatalysts. Cyanide was oxidized mainly to cyanate. Photochemical behavior of the anatase and rutile forms of TiO2 was compared. It is found that anatase has a much higher activity than that of rutile. Bubbling of oxygen in the reactor showed no appreciable increase in cyanide oxidation, implying that the reaction is surface controlling. A very interesting finding in this study is that a natural mineral, ilmenite, can replace chemical titanium dioxide as the photocatalyst. Ilmenite without any treatment did not catalyze the oxidation of cyanide. But, after being roasted at high temperature with oxygen, the oxidation was enhanced dramatically. The mechanisms of photooxidation of cyanide and the roasting of ilmenite are proposed.

The selective separations of trace metals- and organics from water are processes of importance to industry. The application of a new metals capture technology coupled with polymer membrane technology has proven to be one avenue to accomplish such selective separations. The polymers used in these studies are polyphosphazenes. Polyphosphazene polymers consist of an alternating backbone of nitrogen and phosphorus atoms. The polymers have high thermal and chemical stabilities. Experiments at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory demonstrate that polyphosphazene membranes coupled with Chromato Chem,"Chelation Chromatography" process are capable of removing both chlorinated hydrocarbons and metal ions from process streams. These results point to a wide range of potential industrial and environmental applications for such systems. Data will be presented which show the efficiency and selectivity of separations, postulated separation mechanisms, and the initial designs of industrial demonstration units which are currently under construction. Parts of this work have been performed under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between ChromatoChem, Inc. and Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). "Ni-Fe alloys have an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) in which its permeability varies according to the ·applied strain. This alloy film has a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. Electrodeposition is promising as a technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy film because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of electrolysis conditions on the magnetic properties of electrodeposited Ni-Fe alloy films were investigated. Hysteresis loops of Ni-Fe alloy films on copper substrates from sulfate bath were measured by a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The films of low coercivity, which were preferred when used as a force sensor were obtained by introducing certain additives to the sulfate type bath.INTRODUCTIONNi-Fe alloys show an inverse magnetostrictive effect (Villari effect) that their permeability varies depending on the applied strain. The films of this alloy have a potential for application as force sensors such as torque sensors, tension sensors and so on. The authors et al. tried to prepare Ni-Fe alloy films using the sputtering technique, and produced a prototype of Ni-Fe alloy torque sensor [I]. The sensitivity was higher in the torque sensor thus produced than the strain gauge type one, and this torque sensor enables non-contacted detection. It showed excellent durability and reliability. However, the formation of Ni-Fe alloys by sputtering requires higher costs and brought an another problem that the shape of the substrate on which the film was formed was considerably limited. This causes a hindrance to the wide-range application of the force sensors. Electrodeposition is promising as the technique for preparing Ni-Fe alloy films because of its convenience and economy. In this paper, the effects of the conditions of electrodeposition on the magnetic properties of Ni-Fe alloy films were studied."

Various efforts to reduce energy consumption and smelting cost are made at Tamano Smelter. Production of anode copper has been increased by about 30 % and energy requirement has been decreased about 50 % respectively. Challenges toward more higher goal are being continued. MF is the semi-blast furnace which has been developed at Mitsui Miike Smelter in the 1960's to treat vertical retort residue. The MF has also been tested for treatment of various recycling materials and wastes. Now various secondaries and wastes (steel dust, zinc leaching residue, Cu-Ag sludge, spent catalyst and spent rubber, etc.) are mainly treated. Powder materials are briquetted with reductant before being fed to the furnace. Products are crude zinc oxide, matte, non-hazardous slag and steam. Zinc and lead are recovered in oxide dust, and copper and silver are recovered in the matte. The MF furnace can be widely applied to many kinds of materials which contain such non-ferrous metal-valuables. In addition, the improvement in operation and technology has effectively made the unit capacity much larger. The MF furnace now has many advantages for these treatment processes.

The paper outlines the existing facilities and working practices at the Khetri electro-refinery of Hindustan Copper Limited. Plans have been drawn up to mechanize some key operations to improve the quality of cathodes and the working environment as well as economize the refinery operations. The economic analysis for determining various optimum operational parameters under conditions existing in India have also been outlined. The impact of capacity utilization and mechanization under different sets of conditions on operational costs have been highlighted.
