During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

Most recent work in the field of mine production scheduling has focused on either the computerization of the traditional methods or the development of sophisticated mathematical optimization models. Yet it is clear to all concerned that the optimizers need to be made more practical and the traditional approach needs to be made more optimal. This paper, along with another recent paper (Gershon, 85) open a middle ground between these two approaches. In that recent paper, a heuristic procedure for production scheduling was introduced. Here, a series of short term optimizations are used in a creative manner to approximate the true long term optimization. Since these small optimizations are aimed at blending to meet production quality specifications, this approach is most applicable to commodities where the blending function is very important such as coal, cement, phosphates or iron, to name a few. The traditional and the optimization approaches are so far apart that their' advocates have difficulty identifying with the other approach. This is especially true concerning the difficulty of understanding the optimization models for those not trained in the field of operations research. This paper takes the position that the pro- 120 per role of the operations researcher is to provide not only useful and advantageous approaches, but practical, understandable and implementable ones as well. This is the goal of the paper in describing a new approach, consistent with the traditional methods and aimed at approximating the results of the optimizers.

New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

Some 146 kt (4.69 billion oz) of gold have been mined throughout history. Of this, 70% has been mined in this century alone, with 17% produced from 1985 through 1996 (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Until the mid-19th century, placers were the chief source of gold. Advancements in mining, metallurgy and geological thinking have resulted in underground mining (first of veins plus stockworks and later of Rand-type deposits) becoming the principal source of gold. With the demise of the South African deposits and the move towards lower grade ores, the primary source of gold will be from disseminated deposits exploited through large, open-pit mines. For the past 200 years, there has been a fairly constant ratio of about 31 g (1 oz) of gold to each person alive. If this ratio is to be maintained, annual gold production will have to rise from about 2.3 kt/a (73.9 million oz/year) to more than 3.1 kt/a (99.7 million oz/year) by the year 2000. To effect this increase, an unforeseen breakthrough in exploration or metallurgy is needed. Barring this, there will be pressure for an increase in the price of gold. This article traces the historical production of gold from 4000 B.C. - the earliest record of gold mining - to today and relates this 6,000-year record to advances in geological thinking, mining engineering and extractive metallurgy. It also proposes that man's thirst for gold, reflected in the price he will pay for gold, and his ability to find, mine and refine gold have combined to effect an equilibrium based loosely on the historical ratio of 31 g (1 oz) of cumulative gold production per each man or woman alive.

A common assumption in determining the shear strength of a rock joint using a direct shear test is that the surfaces undergoing relative shear are in complete contact. Furthermore, the limiting displacement associated with the residual strength values is obtained based on engineering judgement through visual inspection of shear force versus displacement curves. This study proposes a systematic way of determining the residual shear strength of rock joints by evaluating the limiting displacement leading to a minimum cohesive strength value and taking the true area of contact into account. The results of the study indicate that there is a limiting displacement associated with the residual shear strength, and some rocks may have an inherent interface residual cohesive strength different from zero. When the cohesion is different from zero, the residual shear strength is likely to be underestimated if the true area of contact is not considered. In the case where zero calculated cohesion is obtained, the area of contact has no bearing on the shear strength equation because the frictional force depends only on the normal load.

The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems during microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper, electromagnetic and thermal models of coal are presented that can predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave drying.

When I reached Warren after the "de luxe" South American expedition I had little idea what was in store for me. From the large check Thayer had handed me just before I left New York I was pretty sure the future would be good, and that before long it would involve Anaconda. Evidently, Mr. Thayer had left it to Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway to work out the details The next morning Greenway asked me to come to his office and told me that he and Dr. Ricketts had discussed the question and that Anaconda would make me an offer I could not refuse. They proposed to pay me almost $1000 a month, more than twice my current salary. They had agreed that I should stay with Calumet and Arizona for the rest of the year to help with Bisbee development and anything I could to assist with the New Cornelia plans and construction Of course I could not turn down such a flattering offer, as I had about reached the limit of advancement with a much smaller company in anything save a high executive job, and it would be a long time before I could be ready to change from exploration and geology to operating. Greenway and I agreed that I would stay with him for the remaining eight months of 1916 without any particular title but helping in any way I thought would be most useful. A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

The New Celebration Gold Mine near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was commissioned in late 1986 and the CIL treatment plant currently processes 1.7 million tonnes of gold ore annually. The 1988 geological resource was 13.2 million tonnes grading 2.37 g/t Au in several open pittable deposits with the bulk of gold mineralisation occurring as a stockwork in Archaean quartz feldspar porphyry intrusives along a major regional shear zone. Mine planning, scheduling and operating techniques have focused on minimising open pit dilution whilst maintaining production requirements. This paper describes the successful achievement of this aim in extremely variable ground conditions and orebody widths.

Slope stability in Barrick’s Pierina Mine open pit is significantly influenced by the structural geology, the variably argillized rock mass, and locally by perched groundwater. Development of an extensive surface water diversion network continues at Pierina, which is necessary to minimize highwall and adjacent natural landslide movement and erosion during the wet season. Slope movements are effectively monitored using optical survey methods, strobe light extensometers, gap monitors, and piezometers. The slope stability program at Pierina is focused on improving the understanding of the stability mechanisms in order to ensure continuous safe operating conditions. Priorities are placed on developing an accurate detailed engineering geological model, enhancing groundwater depressurization, and optimizing highwall controlled blasting procedures.

One of the rare consensual points among different resource-based economic analytical approaches refers to the strategic role of rent from mineral extraction, as a decisive tool to ensure that the temporary wealth generated in the present can turn into permanent income in the future. For this reason, evaluation, distribution and use of mining rent plays a central role in the sustainable development of mining cities. Brazilian legislation provides for this at the municipal level by means of participation in the financial results of mineral extraction accomplished in these municipalities, with the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM). CFEM is a type of ad valorem royalty, which charges taxes of up to 3% of the net revenue of mineral production. However, legislation does not establish how these resources should be used. Therefore, there is wide variation in the use of CFEM income among Brazilian mining cities. A study from a sample of the 15 largest mining cities in eight Brazilian states made possible identification of two main patterns with regards to the use of CFEM which were labeled "sustained use" and " the pitfall of the single treasury." In that regard, this article discusses the pressuring factors that contribute to these patterns, as well as the institutional arrangements which may be more favorable to inducing more sustained use of CFEM.

Since the advent of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for treatment of uranium-bearing ores in the 1950?s to current carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing of gold values, metallurgies and operators alike have wrestled with the problem of interstage screening. Early gold CIP plants such as at Homestake utilized externally mounted vibrating screens in conjunction with air lifts to effect carbon-pulp disengagement. Other operations world-wide have likewise adopted this technique with varying degrees of success. The flotation behavior of Florida phosphates was studied using statistical design of experiments to evaluate conditioning parameters and their effect on flotation performance. The solids loading, conditioning time and agitation speed during conditioning were identified as the important variables affecting the reagent coating onto particles. Flotation of the conditioned slurry was carried out at fixed collector dosage and flotation conditions. Phosphate recovery upon flotation was statistically modelled as a function of the conditioning variables. The results indicated that the conditioning variables had an interactive effect on the phosphate flotation performance. Statistical optimization revealed two conditioning regimes in which optimum flotation recovery was obtained. It was determined that optimal recovery can be obtained at lower conditioning energies.

"The new metro line “C” entails the construction and rehabilitation of 24 stations and 21,5 km of metro line, 13 of which carried out underground; the new metro line will improve the transportation system of a congested city such as Rome.The new line “C” of San Giovanni metro station will be constructed adjacent to the existing line “A” of San Giovanni station; the new metro line “C” is deeper than line “A” and will underpass the existing station. The underpass project envisages an Artificial Ground Freezing in order to excavate two new tunnels, while keeping trains running in the safest possible condition.In order to allow trains to regularly run to and from the existing station’s line “A”, a temporary structure for rail support, during excavation of the under-crossing tunnels, was installed and a real-time monitoring system was devised in order to control both soil temperature during freezing activities and the existing station’s behavior. Associated with cordilleran intrusives of intemediate to acidic composition, gold/silver ores are generally found in the intruded host rocks which are adjacent to these intrusives. Generally precious metal deposits lie further from the intrusives than allied base metal deposits. For vented intrusives, the associated volcanics may constitute the intruded rock and form the host for precious metal accumulation. Potential field methods, particularly magnetics, can help to define unseen boundaries of intrusive systems and thus can point to generalized prospecting targets. Other clues arise from the intrusive system type, its emplacement fracturing, the host rock type and local magnetic changes caused by mineralization processes.

Many coal mining companies have potential surface mine reserves that either are known or suspected to have had prior drift mining activity on them. In many cases, there is no documentation on these mines or, at best, very fragmented records. These undocumented abandoned underground mines are creating engineering, financial, and environmental difficulties and concerns for both surface coal mine operators and regulatory personnel. This paper examines the use of resistivity techniques in detecting entries of abandoned drift coal mines. The detection of such a drift mine entry would confirm the presence and orientation of an abandoned underground coal mine.
