The success of the excavation of a sewage tunnel in a very extreme geological conditions, from river deposits and sandy layers to hard dolomite, and several meters below the estuary under the sea water influence, shows that the choice of a right equipment together with the use of chemical products like foam and polymers enable to dig tunnels in unexpected areas and give solution to the environmental problems. The paper describes the excavation and support process as well as the adopted solutions in every material and during the cross through the intermediate shafts, also under sea influence.

The practice of placing loose rockfill as passive support in open stoping voids, of narrow vein mineral deposits, lends itself to the sterilisation of substantial mining reserves in the requirement for regional crown/sill pillars. Significant benefits are to be gained by the Australian mining industry via the development of improved guidelines for the extraction of such sterilised mine pillars. The application of selectively injecting specifically developed ettringite (calcium sulphoaluminate hydrate) type cement grout into loose rockfill, enables an artificial pillar to stabilise the surrounding rockmass and prevent the caving of loose rockfill from the previously backfilled void during extraction of remnant crowdsill pillars. This paper presents the results of laboratory testing used to reduce the technical risks associated with the design of cemented rockfill pillars. A laboratory testing program was devised to investigate the critical parameters influencing the performance of a stabilised rockfill matrix, along with the critical parameters influencing the interpretation of laboratory test samples. The factors investigated include; sample size and shape, particle size distribution, curing time, water quality, cement : water ratio and the confinement effect.

Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. Virtual reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced form of computer graphics. The images are generated based on where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR can provide a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. New technology continues to be introduced into the mining industry to meet the productivity needs of coal and noncoal producers. There is also an increased need for more innovative training of mine workers. New technology and equipment designs often affect the basic causes of accidents. For example, the development of cabs and canopies for underground coal-mine equipment has reduced the number of accidents related to roof falls and rib rolls. However, safety-training specialists then had to focus on the machines themselves, because the modifications had the potential for causing "pinch-point" accidents. In fact, although the overall physical demands on mine workers have diminished, there has been an escalation in the concerns about trauma from repetitive physical activity. Thus, health-and-safety training specialists have shifted their atten¬tion to the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards (Hancock and Hill, 1995). Recognizing that the spatial relationships of a workplace convey more information about hazards when experienced rather than described, trainers agree that simulation is the method of choice. Unfortunately, until recently, simulation systems were either simple software programs that did not come close to portraying the real experience or were complex hardware systems (such as flight simulators) that did, but at a cost of millions of dollars (Fritz, 1991). However, researchers and training specialists are excited about an emerging approach to work-force education based on virtual reality. VR is also described as cyberspace, immersive simulation, artificial reality, telepresence, virtual environment or virtual world (Meyer and Dunn-Roberts, 1992; Peterson, 1992). It represents a group of concurrent advances in computer and interface technologies. They enable an individual to interact in a multisensory way with a computer-generated environment. To achieve this, a typical VR system incorporates a computer that contains the necessary databases for producing realistic images and audio; a head-mounted display (HMD) or screen for viewing the images; and a three-dimensional controller, joystick or data glove for interacting with the computer-generated environment. If virtual reality is to become an effective tool for the safety training of mine workers, its attributes will have to be measured against other forms of delivery. Accordingly, Carr (1992) listed the following areas in which VR should be considered the method of choice: ? When training mistakes would be costly. ? When the necessary environment cannot be experienced in the real world. ? To build interfaces that are sensible and can be manipulated. ? To make training situations really "real." ?To make perceptible the imperceptible.

Understanding sources of dissolved metals and transport characteristics of acid drainage is needed to assist land-use strategies in mineralized regions, particularly in the semi-arid southwestern United States. Water- quality samples were collected from mined and un-mined parts of the Patagonia and southern Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona from streams, springs, seeps, adits, alluvial wells, and bedrock wells. Water quality during base-flow conditions was compared with that *of runoff samples from infrequent winter and summer storms. The largest fraction of annual discharge in these ephemeral streams consists of storm runoff, although springs provide a steady source of low discharge base flow to numerous intermittent perennial reaches. Several abandoned mines in the northern Patagonia Mountains contribute acid and heavy metals to streams. During base-flow conditions in mineralized areas, natural springs and intermittent stream reaches produce acidity but the volume is typically low and acidity is often diluted or neutralized down gradient. Overland runoff contains low concentrations of dissolved metals and moderate acidity, however, stream waters were strongly acidified and metal-laden from contact with abundant pyrite-bearing stream sediments derived from erosion of waste-rock material in and along the sides of the stream channel.

In New Mexico, there are at least 100,000 abandoned mine waste rock piles with widely ranging geochemical and mineralogical compositions. A geochemical and mineralogical study was implemented for five waste rock piles, some which contained sulfides, in the Hillsborn Mining District. Chemical and physical characteristics of mineral grains and their secondary mineral oxidation rinds were examined with the electron microprobe. Pyrite and chalcopyrite appear to be the most reactive to oxidizing conditions. Clays, iron oxide, iron hydroxide, iron sulfate, and primary texture rinds exist in the waste rock piles analyzed.

Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been an important source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incom- plete although gold production estimates for the South Pass- Atlantic City district range from a low of 2.0 Mg (70,000 oz) (Koschmann and Bergendal, 1968) to a high of 9.8 Mg (327,000 oz) (Hausel, 1980). From 1962 to 1983 iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt and production totaled more than 91 Mt (90 million It). The supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt occur in a tightly folded synform bounded by Late Archean granite and granodiorite. The youngest of the Archean successions has a reported Rb-Sr isochron age of 2.8 b.y. (Stuckess, et al., 1985). Metamorphism of the supracrustals increases towards the flanks of the belt and is amphibolite-grade enclosing a small island of greenschist facies rocks. The supracrustal sequence consists of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks that are divisible into four mappable units. The metasediments include metagraywacke, quartzite, pelitic schist, banded iron formation, metaconglomerate, and graphitic schist. Metavolcanics include metabasalt, meta-andesite, and ultramafic schist. These supracrustals have been intruded by mafic sills and dikes and tonalitic stocks and dikes. Two granite plutons and associated pegmatites intrude the supracrustals in the western portion of the belt, and the supracrustals exhibit both fault and intrusive contacts with granitic batholiths along the western and eastern margins. The northeastern flank of the Archean belt is unconformably over- lain by Paleozoic sediments, and the southern portion of the belt is onlaped by Tertiary sediments.

Designing optimal placer gold recovery plants requires a detailed knowledge of the size, shape and surface physical characteristics of the gold particles and the host alluvium in the pay gravel, sand or clay. Results of a recent pilot-scale study of the quantitative performance characteristics of riffled matted sluice systems are presented. For the appropriate non-coherent pay gravel-sand with medium-flat gold, simple sluices can recover gold at greater than 85% efficiency down to 100pm diameter. Alternatives to simple sluices are presented and discussed briefly.

Subsidence measurement methods, applied over the thick and steep seam mining in the Rocky Mountains Region of Western Canada are described. The studies to date indicate that two new subsidence monitoring techniques appear to be the most suited methods for our conditions. The computerized telemetry and aerial photogrammetry systems are being tested for the reliability of the systems during the winter months within the network of laser surveying over the workings of the new hydraulic mine. The site particulars and the mining method of the concerned area have been described briefly. The observation over the old hydraulic mine indicate that panels adjacent to each other do not obey identical subsidence phenomenon.

The U1h Shaft Project is a design/build subcontract to construct one 6.1 meter(m) (20 feet [ft.]) finished diameter shaft to a depth of 321.6 meters (m) (1055 ft.) at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Atkinson Construction was subcontracted by Bechtel Nevada(BN) to construct the U1h Shaft for the Department of Energy (DOE). The project consists of furnishing and installing the sinking plant, construction of the 321.6 m(1055 ft.) of concrete lined shaft, development of a shaft station at a depth of 297.5 m(976 ft.), and construction of a loading pocket at the station. The outfitting of the shaft and installation of a new hoist may be incorporated into the project at a later date. This paper will describe the design phase, the excavation and lining operation, shaft station construction and the contractual challenges encountered on this project.

The Magenta underground station was constructed in the heart of Paris in saturated soft soil and at shallow depth. To investigate the surface settlement and the deformation of the concrete liner, innovative techniques combined with a vast campaign of monitoring were applied. The monitoring data and a simple three-dimensional ?nite element analysis were used to assess the accuracy of the two-dimensional ?nite element model originally utilized in the design of the station. The deformation of the concrete liner was monitored using vibrating wire extensometers. Their performance was validated by the data obtained from monitoring and also by a simpli?ed ?nite element analysis.

Twelve linear test foundations were constructed over an advancing longwall panel in southern Illinois, six were located along the centerline, and six in the maximum tension zone. One footing in each set was a control foundation constructed according to conventional practice. It suffered severe damage. Footings with reinforcing bare and post-tensioning had much smaller elongations, with the post-tensioning preventing cracking of the footing. Footing-soil interface treatments of plastic-on-sand and plastic-on-soil served to reduce damage. The addition of steel fibers to the footing had about the same effect as an interface treatment. Sill plate construction (butt-jointed versus lap-jointed) appeared to significantly affect the behavior.

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.

But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.

The increased impact of mining subsidence in the U.S. coalfields and the recent regulatory constraints legislated by government and state agencies have provoked an intense research effort on this topic by government agencies, coal companies and academic institutions. Subsidence and horizontal strain predictions are a basic requirement if subsidence and its associated effects are to be controlled and contained within acceptable environmental levels. As a result, several such prediction techniques have been proposed or are currently under development to assist coal operators in minimizing the detrimental effects of these surface deformations. VPI&SU has been actively involved in this research effort in the past few years, with particular emphasis on the Appalachian coalfield. During the initial stages of this research a large number of subsidence case studies were collected from the literature, the coal industry and government agencies. In total, data from 32 longwall panels and 60 room and pillar panels were collected. This data bank was used to determine relationships between the basic mining and subsidence parameters, in order to allow the evaluation of the various prediction methods for the Appalachian coal region. Based on this data two subsidence prediction techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions have been developed. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. The limitations of the data of the collected case studies, i.e. accuracy of surveys, frequency of monitoring, lack of horizontal movement measurements, etc, led VPI&SU to the initiation of a detailed subsidence and strain monitoring program above a number of active mines, located in three major coal producing counties of Virginia. The aim of this program was to enhance the data base with accurate and complete measurements of surface movements and to allow, therefore, the refinement of the prediction techniques. This paper presents this monitoring program, discusses in detail the results obtained from three specific case studies and provides recommendations for the implementation of the field data in the general prediction methods.
