The Northeast Corridor Superconducting Maglev Project (SCMAGLEV) entails construction of a high-speed train system between Washington, DC and New York City, with the first leg between Washington and Baltimore, MD. This innovative project will shorten travel times between Washington DC and Baltimore to approximately 15 minutes, and connect Washington, DC to New York City in under an hour. In 2021 the draft EIS is expected to be issued for comment with a Final EIS/ROD anticipated by early 2022. This paper provides an update on the project as presented in Gall et al. (2020) and discusses the economic and environmental benefits, preferred alignment alternative, preliminary staging and launching of the TBMs for construction, and preliminary station design.

There exists a wide array of industrial byproducts that produce beneficial responses in the soil/ plant environment. These materials range from clean-coal-technology residues produced during the generation of electric power (particularly those high in gypsum) to mineral fines produced by the aggregates industry (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). A number of these materials are examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines, together with Foster Miller Inc., has developed a compact, high pressure scrubber system for continuous miners. Powered by water energy alone, it can move up to 1.4 m3/s (3,000 cfm) of air and scrub a significant amount of the dust in the air. Full- scale model and underground trials showed excellent performance. Operated at 8.3 x 10[3] kPa (1,200 psi) and 38 L/m (10 gpm), the scrubber has reduced operator and return dust concentrations by more than 50 pct. This paper describes the full-scale model development, system fabrication and underground evaluations of this novel and inexpensive scrubber.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian Mining Industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage phenomenon. AMD occurs when sulphide minerals (ex. pyrite) contained in rock are exposed to air and water and subsequently oxidise to produce low pH water. This acid effluent has the potential to mobilise any heavy metals contained in the rock. Coating the sulphide minerals with silicates is a new promising technology to reduce AMD. Pynte is treated with a solution containing H2O2, sodium silicate and a buffering agent. H2O2 oxidises a small part of pyrite producing ferric iron (Fe3+) ions. These ions subsequently react with the silicate ions to produce ferric hydroxide-silica that precipitates on the pyrite surface producing a passive coating. This silicate coating can protect the grains of pyrite from oxidation. This paper presents a series of experiments that confirm that silicate coating can considerably reduce AMD.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

Coal mining has been an important industry in the Appalachian area for many years. This is particularly true in the northern part of the area, namely, in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Also, in the south a great deal of mining activity has been carried on in Alabama, Kentucky, and southwest Virginia. Some of the by-products of this activity has been the production of mineralized water from the mines in copious quantitites. The southern Appalachians have been somewhat more fortunate in that the water there has had a considerable amount of alkalinity in it, which has to a large extent eliminated some of the more undesirable aspects of mine drainage. Northern Appalachia, including central and western Pennsylvania, the Monongahela basin in West Virginia, and the Appalachian area in eastern Ohio have not been so fortunate in that coals in those areas and the top and bottom rock have, in many cases, shown considerable quantities of pyrite, and the water does not carry the carbonates found farther south.

The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant was studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave to investigate the effects of stirring speed, temperature, solution pH, and iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium. It was found that a high temperature and a high solution pH were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by the mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.8 kJ/mole.

"In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. Established in 1974 and based in Lausanne, Switzerland, ITA-AITES is made up thousands of professionals involved in the tunnel and underground space industry, including engineers, project owners, town planners, architects, industrial designers, companies specialized in public works and major structures, suppliers of construction site facilities and equipment, lawyers, politicians, researchers and academics, economists, financial experts and other stakeholders.ITA-AITES consists of 73 member nations and 300 affiliated members, including 15 major sponsors and 60 donors. The main constituents of flat glass are the eight commonest elements of the earth's crust. Five of these, silicon, sodium, calcium, magnesium and oxygen are essential. Two more, Aluminum and potassium have beneficial properties. For colorless glasses iron is undesirable, in standard clear glasses a small amount of iron is tolerable, while for most tinted glasses iron is essential. These elements are present in glass as oxides and because they are so common there is no foreseeable resource shortage. The availability of supplies of materials at particular sites at prices which enable a glass manufacturer to be competitive may be another matter. In this paper it is intended to provide a historical perspective to the current situation, to contrast some of the traditional North American and European practices, and to progressively review some of the driving forces for future change and to attempt to assess their effects upon both raw material supplier and consumer.

In this review article, various approaches and mathematical models that have been used to simulate, design, and synthesize flotation circuits are examined. First, a brief review of flotation kinetics is presented which is followed by a discussion on simulation of flotation circuits. The existing literature on optimal design of flotation circuits has been divided into two broad categories. In the first category, a generalized integral approach is used wherein the optimal circuit design involves determination of both optimal interconnection of various flotation cells/ banks of cells in terms of structural parameters and optimal values of various operating parameters. In the second category, a conventional circuit configuration is assumed to be the best configuration; the optimal design here only means the optimization of operating parameters. The merits and demerits of these two approaches are discussed.

Automatic control of fine-coal cleaning circuits has traditionally been limited by a lack of adequate sensors. Although several nuclear-based analyzers are available, none have seen widespread acceptance. In this investigation, image analysis is used for the on-line determination of ash contents in fine-coal slurries. The ash content of a flotation tailings stream is correlated to the mean gray level of the slurry. Based on a 90% prediction interval, an analysis of sensor performance indicates an accuracy of 73[±] 4% ash over a range of from 65% to 90% ash. While the results are comparable, the video-based system costs only a fraction of what a nuclear-based analyzer costs. The sensor is now installed at the Middle Fork preparation plant, which is owned by Pittston Coal Co.

Froth flotation is now, the most commonly used method for cleaning fine-coal fractions in coal-preparation plants. Past research and industrial practice have demonstrated that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases. This is due to the flotation of high-ash particles that have a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the surface. Because gravity-based processes are much more efficient for the treatment of middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine-coal cleaning was studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine-circuit feed. Results are shown of a parametric study that used a semibatch Falcon centrifugal concentrator. The results of the study revealed that separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content and feed rate.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

The phenomenon of acid drainage is likely to occur whenever pyritic rock is broken up, permitting access of air and water. The basic chemistry of the oxidation process is described by the equations below:- FeS 2 +1120 + 7 02 ➔FeS04 +112S04 +1440k.J This reaction proceeds rather slowly, although believed to be bacterially catalysed to some extent. Once sufficient ferrous ions and acidity have been established the following two reactions take over, yielding the same net result but at a much greater rate. First, ferrous ions are oxidised to ferric; this is an extremely slow reaction unless bacterially catalysed.

The petroleum refining industry makes extensive use of catalysts for the conversion of crude oils into more usable products such as gasoline, fuel oil and gas, aromatics, and others. Catalysts used for hydraprocessing contain cobalt-molybdenum or nickel -molybdenum, although there are catalysts that also contain tungsten. During hydroprocessing, nickel and vanadium are deposited on the catalysts, eventually rendering them inactive. The refiners are then confronted with the problem of disposing the spent catalysts. In the past, landfilling was a common method of disposal and it is still practiced in some countries. Other refiners prefer to stockpile the spent catalysts at the refineries until the price of metals warrants their sale to metal reclaimers. This practice, however, poses environmental problems to the refineries for storage and disposal of spent catalysts. Other types of catalysts are amenable to regeneration. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the recovery of nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium, and alumina from spent hydroprocessing catalysts by Gulf Chemical and Metallurgical Corporation and to review the use of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate for pressure leaching of spent catalysts.

Limestone neutralization of acid mine drainage has been proposed and examined as a method of treatment. However, limestones differ greatly in composition and structure. The reactivity of 14 selected limestones was studied, both by chemical and physical properties and by relative effectiveness in neutralizing synthetic and actual mine waters, and several guidelines for the choice of limestones are given. The particle size should be at least as small as 74 microns and preferably smaller. The most effective limestones are most nearly pure calcium carbonate. Stones which have a relatively low calcium con- tent but which contain calcite and have a large surface area are also effective neutralizers. Magnesite and dolomitic limestones are much less reactive. Disadvantages in using even the most reactive lime- stones for neutralization are indicated.

The new regulations for the bituminous coal mining industry, issued by the mining authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany, are aimed at reducing to a feasible minimum any development of the coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) by lowering the admissible dust exposure of mine workers. Additional and improved measures of dust suppression and job assignment control *) are required for the purpose In this connection two basically different demands are placed on dust measurements: As far as dust suppression is concerned, the causes of dust development and the effectiveness of methods applied to reduce dust concentrations have to be identified, whereas with regard to the control of job assignment, the dust exposure of mine workers has to be depermined. Demands placed on dust measurements -- specifically for determining dust exposure -- are liable to become more severe since the threshold limit values were considerably reduced in these last years and since any additional dust suppression measures as well as a purposeful job assignment to certain mine workers are dependent on relevant measuring data. Therefore, research work has been carried out with the objective of measuring and evaluating, in terms of their effect (i. e. their incidence on the development of a CWP), size distribution, concentration, and specific noxiousness of any prevailing dust conditions.
