"In Part I, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. The diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals – tennantite, sinnerite and lautite – and compared with enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. IntroductionA comprehensive thermodynamic review has been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur (Cu- As-S) system (Gow et al., 2014, 2015a, 2016b; Gow, Huang and Young, 2016c). Data on the free energies of more than 100 species were collected from various authors, and thermodynamic databases collated to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database is listed and discussed in Gow et al. (2015a). Diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2015a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014) and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2015b).In the present study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams were generated by changing the Cu-As-S stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species were shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions and sulfur oxidation states."

INTRODUCTION The extraction of gold and silver from ores, concentrates, and various metallurgical products can be achieved by a number of hydrometallurgical techniques. The solvation properties of alkali cyanide solutions on gold and silver were recognized 200 years ago. A cyanidation process for leaching gold from its ore was patented in 1887 and 1889 by MacArthur and Forrest. The solvent action of thiosulfate on gold and silver was observed over 100 years ago. Recently, several patents have been issued for processes using ammonium thiosulfate as lixiviant for precious metals, Berezowsky, et. al (1978) and Kerley (1981). Tozawa and and coworkers also examined the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Thiourea leaching of gold and silver initially discussed by Plaksin and Kozhukhova in 1941 but has received only limited attention since that early work. Use of thiourea as an alternative to cyanide was the topic of several papers presented at the 1981 AIME annual meeting In Chicago, Illinois. Hiskey provided a review of the fundamental chemistry of the dissolution of gold and silver in acidic thiourea solutions. Pyper and Hendrix reported on the leaching of a finely disseminated gold ore using thiourea as a lixiviant. The review article(6) previously presented was fairly comprehensive covering Important contributions to the chemistry of thiourea and the processing of gold and silver with acidic thiourea solutions. A search of the technical literature was made to determine recent (since 1981) progress and developments in applying thiourea to the processing of gold and silver. This review reveals that Soviet and Eastern European scientists are continuing to make major contributions to our understanding of thiourea/precious metal systems.

Over the past decade, the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry's injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked and injury rate. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992-2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 11, pp. 73-79. I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, I. K., and Ramani, R. V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability char¬acteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting. September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design." 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium. September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important

The current process is dangerous and subjective, relying on human operators near the cutting interface. The new sensor aims to improve worker safety by allowing operators to perform their functions from a greater distance.

The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about 50 miles west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 3500 feet below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreased with tire!. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

In most mining operations, some degree of selectivity is applied. Whether one deals with surface or underground operation, ore zones, and waste zones are defined not only on the basis of the value of the ore contained, but also taking mining constraints into account. A number of computer techniques are presented which can be used to determine the optimum location of the footwall and hanging wall of ore zones intersected by drill holes. Minimum mining width and minimum internal waste width constraints are taken into account, as well as other economic constraints. The system is presented as an integral part of a larger manumatic ore reserve and mine planning system.

A project's rates of return (RORs)1, be it the internal rates return (IRRs) or one of the many IRR surrogates, frequently needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency an ROR- approximation procedure depend on the quality the approximation-initiating parameters, such as bounds or seed values (guesses). The existing approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses suggested by intuition rather than supported by mathematical considerations. This paper presents three mathematically founded ROR-bounding and eleven ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability by using examples of typical project cash-flowpatterns (CFPs). The calculated bounds and guesses not only improve the approximation efficiency, but also allow the process of the ROR discovery to be automated, thereby making it more convenient and reliable.

During the major expansion of the Inspiration smelter, which took place in 1973, the bulk material handling system underwent a matching expansion in order to move the required materials. Inspiration is the first smelter worldwide to employ electric smelting in conjunction with the use of Hoboken converters (1), (2). The installation includes a 51 -MVA electric furnace, five 4.25m (14-foot) diameter Hoboken converters, rotary dryer, bedding plant, acid plant, heat recovery steam plant, and gas and dust handling system. See Figure 1, Plot Plan. As of today, the 51-MVA electric furnace is the world's largest in the smelting of copper. Engineering design for the installation was per- formed by Treadwell Corporation of New York. The task of designing the conveyor system was complex because the system had to be installed while the smelter was operating and with minimum plant shutdowns, and it had to serve both the existing and the new smelter. Existing conveyors were redesigned where necessary and incorporated into the new conveyor system. See Figure 2, Flow Sheet. The system encompasses the handling of such diverse materials as wet and dry copper concentrates, cement copper, silica flux, cold dope, and concentrate and flue dust.

By Sims Some two years ago we began investigating low coke button bituminous coal for use at our Bound Brook, New Jersey plant as a replacement for anthracite. Since August, 1957 the plant has been operating continously on this coal with the exception of a new 200,000#/hr, cyclone boiler. This study was motivated not from our desire to conduct combustion research, but for the sole purpose of reducing our steam costs, The indications were that the economics were greatly in favor of the use of the bituminous coal. The attempts to reduce the costs have developed some knowledge that has enabled this program to succeed reasonably well as will be discussed later by Mr. Ludden. The production of steam size anthracite is dependent upon either the reclamation of old culm banks or the breakage in the production of the domestic sizes. The anthracite industry has not as yet been able to cut, its mining costs to the point where the production of steam sizes has become a profitable business. This has resulted in two basic problems: (1) A constantly rising price in an attempt to have those sizes carry their share of the cost and, (2) Periodic shortages of supply when the demand is good but the market price prohibits the mining of anthracite to produce those sizes only, These conditions have made the long range forecast appear as though the price would go even higher and/or the supply at times be critically short.

In this study, laboratory and site studies were performed to investigate the usability of a new insertion apparatus designed for the split-set type of friction bolts. The new apparatus decreases the friction during the bolt insertion by a temporary diametric compression of the split tubes. According to the results, the new precompression apparatus was found to be advantageous in terms of the insertion practicality and prevention of the buckling problem. By allowing increases in the ratio of bolt diameter to drill-hole diameter, the new apparatus was found to supply relatively high normal stresses and friction capacity in drill holes after opening its clamping mechanism.

This paper discusses a composite of two coal reserve studies, each of which made use of a computer-based modeling system to assist in an evaluation of multi-seam deposits. The model permitted simultaneous consideration of seam thickness, seam structure, overburden thickness, over-burden ratio, and quality parameters for sulphur content, ash content, BTU values and the EPA Compliance index. The model is designed for use by a non-programmer, geologist or mining engineer. It enables the user, from a computer terminal in his office, to specify constraints (for example maximum um sulphur and maximum- ash content, minimum seam thickness and minimum BTU rating), and produces a report showing the volume, quality and location of that part of the total in place deposit satisfying all the constraints.

Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

Requirements for full extraction in underground coal mining call for inexpensive, safe, techniques to be competitive with conventional methods. Longwall and shortwall systems are to some extent employed for this purpose. Another method would be rib pillar extraction (and pillar extraction). These methods are compared with each other with respect to procedure, equipment, safety, roof control, investment, output, performance, costs The advantages of r.p.e. show this method very attractive. Number and cost of equipment are lowest. Safety and roof control becomes improved by a mobile roof support recently developed in Austria. Its successful use in the R.S.A. is being explained.

Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. Pyhasalmi is a massive sulfide orebody located in central Finland. The mine has been in operation since 1962. The flotation concentrator produces Cu, Zn, Pb and pyrite concentrates. The plant has used an on-stream analyzer for process control since 1968. The original analyzer has overlived a few generations of minicomputers, but the analytical parts are essentially unchanged. The on-stream analyzer is a critical component in plant process control system, which has made Pyhasaltni one of the pioneers in the art of computer control and optimization of flotation plants. The paper summarizes the experiences gained from the use of the high performance elemental analyzer system and the proven benefits from the use of on-stream analyzers at a complex sulfide flotation. The aging analyzer is approaching the end of its useful life. A new state of the art analyzer system is undergoing testing at Pyhasalmi.

The flotation behavior of quartz in the presence of alkyl ammonium acetates as a. function of alkyl chain length has been interpreted in terms of hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. The van der Waals cohesive free energy that is responsible for hemi-micelle formation has been found from these results to be 1.02 kT per CH group. This 2 is in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from research on the properties of micelles in bulk systems.
