Underground water is part of a continuing hydrologic cycle, which involves all elements of water occurrence. All groundwater of economic importance is in process of movement through a porous rock stratum from a place of intake or recharge to a place of disposal. Groundwater moves and is contained in fractures in the rock and/or in intergranular spaces of porous formations. Where there have been no water developments by man, groundwater is in a state of approximate equilibrium and the forces of replenishment and discharge are in balance. Thus, groundwater, unlike other mineral resources, is constantly being replenished in most areas at a rate which is measurable and which is important in the planning of its utilization. As illustrated by Figure 1, replenishment of groundwater supplies results from the direct penetration of rainfall through the soil to the water table, by seepage from surface streams or ponds, and/or by subsurface movement from an adjacent groundwater body. Under natural discharge conditions, water is commonly consumed by transpiration of trees and other types of vegetation, by flows from springs, by evaporation from shallow depths below the surface, and seepage into streams that traverse the area.

Death and injury rates in mining have been the highest of any industry; the injury severity rates in mines have also been the highest. Tentative figures reveal that 1971 was the best year yet for the bituminous coal indus¬try with the lowest number of fatal accidents. Nevertheless, 177 men were killed at a frequency rate of 0.76 per million man hours. Coal mine accident statistics have been described at various times as unacceptable and intolerable and recently resulted in the enactment of massive legislation. The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act was passed by Congress "to improve the working conditions and practices in coal mines and to prevent accidents and occupational diseases originating in the coal mining industry." The prevention of accidents in coal mines is the statutory responsibility of mining engineers and the moral responsibility of all who have any part to play in mining coal. The questions to be answered by these men may well be - What are the reasons for the high accident rate? Are the mines as safe as they can be? Are our mines sufficiently manned to insure proper supervision of production cycles and safety requirements? Are our plans for safety committees, safety campaigns, and safety inspections sufficient? Are they producing the results intended? If not, how can these be reorganized to have a greater impact? What is the real cost of an accident? What are the immediate and long-term plans for further improvements? These questions are in no way exhaustive, and the answers are not easy. There are many aspects of mine safety, and any one of them can be the subject of a lengthy discussion. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to limit the analysis to documented fatal electrical accidents in mines so that meaningful conclusions for improvement in electrical accident-experience statistics can be made. In doing this, it is also the intention to emphasize areas of missing information and propose a few suggestions for better hazard analysis.

Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. This paper presents the results of push-out tests on cement grout plugs in salt. Two expandable cement grouts have been tested. The average interface shear strengths ranged from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses at failure, assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface, were up to eight times higher. Standard deviations commonly reached 20%. Dissolution along the interface was observed, and may have been enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt. This dissolution appears to have reduced bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g. shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

Of all the fossil fuels produced in the U. S., coal is by far the most abundant. U. S. reserves amount to an estimated 1.5 trillion tons, 2,500 times the 600 million tons produced in 1970. Although it would not be possible to recover all of this coal economically with current mining technology, a significant portion would be available given the proper circumstances. With existing technology, approximately one-eighth of these reserves is accessible, an amount which would last for several hundred years at the 1970 level of production. On the face of it, this substantial reserve should go a long way in meeting the Nation's energy needs. But coal offers special problems. As additional coal is mined and then burned, there are increased costs to the Nation's land, water, skies, and health. Hence, coal poses a dilemma because of its dual status as one of our most abundant domestic fuels and as one of our major sources of environmental degradation. Against the benefits that would be chalked up in the areas of national security, balance of trade, and economic well-being from the increased use of coal, we must enter on the debit side of the ledger the increased environmental cost. This paper reviews the use of U.S. fossil fuel, the drawbacks of coal as an energy source, the means being developed to overcome these drawbacks, and the background behind the present sulfur emission regulations relative to coal combustion. It also discusses in detail the Federal Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) current policies to ensure the continued use of coal as a major source of energy for fossil-fuel fired power plants.

"Building and operating tunnels has been a highstakes endeavor in terms of costs, complexity, safety and impact on contractors, owners and the public for a long time. There are many variables that need to be closely monitored and managed to construct a tunnel on-time, on-budget and safely. Once built, there are also many elements that need to be monitored and managed to operate a tunnel safely and efficiently.Fundamentally, the risks to the safe and efficient construction and operation of a tunnel are a function of the degree of harm and the likelihood of the harm occurring. From a cyber security perspective, risk assessments used to inform decision makers and support risk responses are typically based on identification of relevant threats; internal and external vulnerabilities; the impact that may occur given the potential for threats to exploit vulnerabilities and the likelihood that harm will occur. This article focuses on creating awareness of vulnerabilities associated with technology used in tunnel construction and operation and some of the challenges associated with remediation of these vulnerabilities. As we all know, technology has been evolving at an accelerating pace and infiltrating every aspect of our lives in new and often exciting ways. In the world of tunneling, sensors and systems that provide position and time have become accurate, rugged and cost-effective enough to come out of the research labs and into the equipment and systems used every day. There are many opportunities to employ connected computing devices and sensors to costeffectively capture, integrate and analyze key data with minimal latency to manage risk better, improve safety and avoid surprises."

The Negociacion Minera Santa Maria De La Paz mining operations are located at La Paz (some eight miles West of Matehuala), State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. These operations consist of a single copper-silver property, called the Dolores mine and a number of silver-low base metal properties. The ores from these several mines are transported by rail, or truck, to the central milling unit. The milling unit has two separate sections to treat the two types of ore. The ores from the several silver-base metal mines are mixed at the mill as they arrive. Up to the present time the silver-base metal ores have been milled to produce a bulk concentrate which carries valued in gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and considerable arsenic. In such concentration the zinc and cadmium values are lost to the operations in their liquidations as they are shipped as lead concentrates. Since these ores have exceptional quantities of arsenic which is concentrated in the milling process, these bulk concentrates have to be sent to a smelter for pre-smelting operations to remove the arsenic.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

In some parts of the world, silver chloride occurs naturally in deposits of cerargyrite (1) (i.e. horn silver). In other cases, silver chloride is produced and exploited for its well- known photographic or electrochemical properties. In this case, it is a valuable commodity needing no further refinement. However, silver chloride is frequently encountered in precious metals refining. In most cases, it is a by-product that occurs in small amounts. For example, it is a common occurrence in gold refining when using the Miller and Wohlwill refining processes or when parting fire assay beads. As such, the mode of reduction to elemental silver is of little impact on the overall refining economics. Thus, a variety of reduction methods are employed all enjoying varying degrees of popularity (2). On the other hand, silver chloride serves as a key intermediate in the production of fine silver by nitrogen species catalyzed acid pressure leaching of refractory silver concentrates. This has most recently been practiced at the Sunshine Mining & Refining plant located in Kellogg, Idaho. Thus, efficient methods of reduction, precipitation and materials handling on an industrial scale are of the utmost importance. In this presentation, the evolution of these methods will be detailed.

"INTRODUCTION Electrification of the heavily trafficked Manchester to Preston route by Network Rail required the rehabilitation of the Victorian era Farnworth Tunnels to accommodate 21st century high speed trains. Network Rail, J. Murphy and Sons Ltd (JMS) and OTB Engineering Ltd (OTB) collaborated closely to complete these works in close proximity to heritage infrastructure whilst maintaining a rail service on the route. This significant challenge has been mastered by a combination of detailed investigation, complex modelling, robust design, extensive monitoring, ground treatment, secant piling, sprayed concrete, steel arches and segmental lining techniques. Investigation of the “Down” Tunnel found deformation and cracking of the lining and this was reconstructed during 11 weekend possessions. The “Up” Tunnel was filled with low strength concrete and a 9m diameter open face shield was used to construct an 8m diameter segmental lined tunnel during a 23 week blockade whilst traffic was maintained in the “Down” Tunnel. ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY The Farnworth Tunnel project is part of the UK wide £1bn Railway Upgrade Plan to provide improvements throughout the rail network which includes the Manchester to Preston route. The project also supports the UK Government commitment to build a “Northern Powerhouse” by improving links that bind northern England together and which will help it release its full potential with a more balanced, healthier economy. The majority of the current UK rail network infrastructure resulted from the rapid growth of the railways in the mid to late 19th century which means that most of the existing tunnels are over 120 years old. Over the centuries the introduction of larger rolling stock has reduced the original clearances provided in tunnels. The electrification of a route requires that any over-line structures provide clearance for Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), new rolling stock and to meet modern standards. As part of Network Rail’s current electrification programme a further 36 tunnels have been identified on routes requiring electrification. Not of all these Victorian structures will require alterations to provide OLE clearance but the condition of the existing tunnels and modern fire / waterproofing requirements may ultimately dictate the need for rehabilitation."

Adverse water-quality impacts of uranium mining and milling activities on both surface- and ground-water resources in the Grants Mineral Belt have recently been documented.1 In some cases, the impacts resulted in violation of existing regulations and license conditions and have endangered public health. Unfortunately, industry-sponsored ground-water monitoring programs do not adequately record the actual impacts of mining and milling on ground-water quality.

The nature of adsorbed calcium carboxylates (oleate and stearate) has been investigated by in-situ/ex-situ Fourier transform infrared internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS). Previous spectroscopic studies in alkaline solution have shown that adsorbed carboxylate is characterized by a C-O stretching vibration at about 1550 em?1 for less than monolayer coverage. Similar results were found in this study. More specifically, in this study such a singlet at 1550 cm-1 was found for LB monolayers of calcium distearate transferred as a condensed layer at a high film pressure to the surfaces of fluorite and germanium. Normally the spectrum of bulk calcium distearate reveals a doublet at 1575 and 1540 cm-1, characteristic of a three dimensional 7-fold coordination for calcium carboxylate complexes. This doublet is generally found for carboxylate multilayers formed by spontaneous adsorption at the surface of calcium minerals. In this regard, the spectral evidence suggests that whenever the calcium dicarboxylate is constrained at a surface as a condensed layer, the 7-fold coordination can not be satisfied and the surface carboxylate is forced into a two dimensional symmetrical coordination with a singlet at 1550 cm-1. On the other hand, if the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayer calcium distearate film is transferred at a low film pressure the doublet is observed. This analysis is further confirmed by the spectral results for LB transferred calcium distearate monolayers at a hydrophobic silicon surface. Even though these are condensed monolayers formed at high film pressure, the carboxylate group, oriented away from the surface, is no longer constrained by the surface force field, and thus exhibits the characteristic doublet of the bulk calcium distearate salt.

In this paper a correlation between selectivity of flocculant adsorption and separation efficiency is outlined and a potential technique to achieve selective adsorption of flocculants is discussed.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

As a result of the Three Mile Accident and because of evidence indicating radiation protection problems, the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) undertook a major effort, with the assistance of the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL), to analyze radiation protection programs at 47 commercially operated nuclear power plants. This effort, the health physics appraisal program (HPAP), using a modified management oversite and risk tree analytical logic methodology (MORT) which consisted of analytical trees with applicable questions for each tree, was subsequently extended to include USNRC licensed uranium mills. In the uranium mill appraisal, a team of four senior radiation safety professionals spent a week at each mill evaluating the total health physics program. Prior to the HPAP, the USNRC inspection efforts were designed to determine if the licensees were fulfilling the requirements of the code of federal regulations and the mills source material license. The HPAP, however, was designed and structured to facilitate an integrated look at the total program. It is also directed into areas for which explicit NRC regulatory requirements may not currently exist. The latitude of the HPAP was designed to allow professional judgement in the evaluation of program adequacy, because merely meeting the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessarily ensure an adequate and effective health physics program. The results of the first eight site visits and the generic health physics problems identified within the uranium milling industry will be identified in this paper.

This paper presents a methodology for long-range studies of petroleum supply, to meet projected demands, that involves modifications of procedures used previously. This paper continues a series of papers on this general topic in the AIME, the most elaborate recent one being that by Warren Davis given in February 1958. The procedures considered here begin with the assumption that the governmental framework of regulations and taxes remains fixed- but that price changes. After .these procedures have been reviewed, the effects of changing certain governmental controls, will be considered in order to judge their potential effects on future supply. This is an essential step because controls cannot be expected to' remain static in a situation changing as much as the petroleum. industry and because such changes are within-the scope of alternative ways of adjusting to impending problems. The first procedure begins with: a) trends in drilling success, b) relation between field income from oil and gas and footage drilled, c) declines in capacity from production, d) trends in capacity of new and producing wells, e) all monetary values are in constant 1958 dollars, and f) target amounts of domestic crude petroleum production. 'From these components projections are obtained of: 1) numbers of future producing wells required, 2) footage drilled, 3) new wells drilled, 4) crude oil found, 5) capacity of producing wells, 6) completion costs, 7) finding costs, 8) production costs, and 9) average wellhead crude oil price consistent with the footage-field income relationship.

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. Seismic geophysical methods have long been used by geologists and geophysicists to delineate subsurface features. These techniques work because different types and strengths of soil and rock transmit energy at different velocities. The Crosshole-Downhole tests (CH-DH) and seismic refraction survey (RS) are among the most used methods in engineering applications to obtain the elastic properties of subsurface layers. As a result, seismic methods have evolved into a cost-effective tool for rapidly determining depth to bedrock in engineering and construction projects. The seismic methods are best suited to sediment thickness analysis, bedrock quality determination and detection of the presence of weaknesses in the bedrock before the erection of any civil engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels, dams and portals. Seismic methods are also useful in estimating the rippability of bedrock ahead of construction. These methods are particularly useful for large-scale projects that require a significant number of drill holes, resulting in a substantial investment of time and costs for drilling. The CH-DH and RS methods are typically comparable in total cost to drilling, but provide significantly more information in 2-D and 3-D and therefore reduce the likelihood of conceptually oversimplifying the subsurface conditions. The above mentioned methodologies were considered to be the most appropriate geophysical methods for investigating the shallow structure and the dynamic soil properties of the area where the Ilarionas Dam is scheduled to be constructed. The main target of this work was to prove the potential of geophysical methods in providing accurate information to the civil engineer and to obtain information on the dynamic soil and rock properties for earthquake design analyses for the dam construction. Specifically, nine refraction seismic profiles and three cross-hole-downhole seismic tests were implemented to determine the subsurface conditions of the study area. The tests determined the shear and compression wave velocity profiles versus depth and other crucial parameters such as Young and Rigidity modules. Furthermore, they allowed the detailed 2-D mapping (along several profiles of the study area) of the subsurface variation of the soil and rock dynamic moduli.

The development of Diatomaceous Earth filter aids has added a new dimension to filtration technology in the mining industry. It makes possible the filtration of slimes with almost perfect clarity, and at rates that become economical.
