The aim of this paper was to establish if mineral resource scarcity is a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The project objectives were achieved by investigating economically viable, and critical or strategic minerals remaining in South Africa, as well as resource scarcity, as a driver for South Africa to transition to a circular economy. The study found that some minerals in South Africa, such as iron ore, lead, manganese, gold, and cobalt have less than 50 years of economically viable mining remaining. At least 18 minerals can be classified indicatively as critical or strategic: aggregates, bauxite, chromite, cobalt, copper, gold, graphite, iron, limestone, lithium, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, platinum group metals, rare earth elements, silver, titanium, and vanadium. The classification was based on the minerals’ economic importance, supply risk, and potential use in the development and manufacturing of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that the scarcity of mineral resources is a critical driver for the country to transition to a circular economy. Other identified drivers include socio-economic factors, climate change commitments, and business objectives. All minerals are non-renewable resources and at risk of depletion, therefore sustainable extraction and use are critical. Priority should be directed at investigating circular economy opportunities and substitutes for commodities at risk of being depleted within the next 50 years. There is an opportunity for South Africa to transition from a minerals export-based model to one that promotes local mineral beneficiation and manufacturing of end products.

Pt-based alloys for high-temperature applications in aggressive environments have been under development for over 10 years, and are targeted to be used as either as bulk, or as coatings. The alloys comprise Pt, Al, Cr, and Ru, and the microstructure has been improved by composition to a best possible analogue of the nickel-based superalloys, which these alloys could partially replace. This was necessary because the previous best alloy had a strengthening precipitate volume proportion of only approximately 40 vol.%, whereas the nickel-based superalloys have around 70 per cent, and a lower volume would mean that the strength would not be the best that could be obtained. The microstructures were assessed using electron microscopy, and have been related to the alloys? hardness values. The current microstructures are much more like those of NBSAs, with a high proportion of the strengthening ~Pt3Al precipitates. Since the samples have to be small (platinum is expensive), hardness has been used as an indication of strength. Nano-indentation studies showed that the hardness and Young?s modulus were higher for ~Pt3Al than the (Pt) matrix. More extensive oxidation studies have been undertaken on the previous optimum sample, and the effect of cooling rate after heat treatment has also been ascertained. In addition, the samples were studied after different heat treatment times, and cross-sections were made in order to characterize the alumina scale that formed. The oxide scales of Pt-11Al-3Cr-2Ru (at.%) up to 100 h exposure did not spall, and were at least as good as those of the ternary alloys. There was no discernable Al depletion zone in the substrate, although it could have been at a greater depth than thickness of the samples studied. Further additions to the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys have been studied, to increase the melting temperature as well as to reduce the platinum content without compromising the properties. Reduced platinum content would have the benefits of reduced density and cost. The target elements include vanadium and niobium, of which vanadium is of special interest, since it is a South African product. Before these additions could be made, phase equilibria studies were undertaken so that the maximum addition could be ascertained, and also to check any possible ternary phases, which could be deleterious. Work on the Pt-Al-V system revealed a ternary phase, ~V27Pt54Al19 (at.%), which has a eutectic reaction with (Pt). The maximum V addition is likely to be around 15 at.%, otherwise ~Pt3V or the ternary phase will form, and not the required (Pt)/~Pt3Al phases.

Water plays a significant role in minerals processing; this is especially true in coal preparation where water-based beneficiation is widely accepted and consistently delivering sharp separation efficiencies and high product yields. Although wet processing is favoured, the substantial process water requirement may prove this impractical and unsustainable in some parts of the world. Many coal-rich regions (including South Africa) have experienced severe water shortages. Coupled with the effects of drought, some countries experience freezing winters from which problems related to frozen process water and machinery may arise. Hence coal preparation practices will soon have to adapt, irrespective of the technical and economic feasibility offered by the currently employed water-based methods. As a result, extensive research into the development of dry methods for effectively beneficiating coal has progressed. This review paper intends to provide a collection of the relevant information pertaining to dry coal processing globally, and aid in understanding the applicability, performance, success or failure thereof. The methods available for dry materials preparation, with special regard to those applicable for coal beneficiation, are detailed in terms of principle, applicability, limitations and performance. Dry coal beneficiation has potential to aid the current wet-based methods with some considerations to possible limitations set forth by coal geology, application, product specification, particle size distribution, moisture, efficiency, capacity and cost. These methods may be established in future, especially in the arctic, arid and under-developed regions through new plant installations, expansions and small mines processing. The theoretical part of the paper presents an analysis of the conditions of Tl extraction from Pb using different extractants and determines the activity coefficients in liquid solutions of Pb-Tl and PbCl2-TlCl. The dependence of the solution activity coefficients upon the composition and temperature is presented in the form of Krupkowski and Krupkowski-Fitzner equations. An analysis and evaluation were made of the influence of the methods of PbCl2 introduction into a Pb-Tl solution upon the efficiency of the Tl extraction process under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The analysis made it possible to formulate relevant equations describing the dynamics of the process of Tl extraction from Pb under stirring conditions as well as under the extractant injection into the liquid Pb-Tl solution conditions. In the part concerning experimental work, results are given for tests on the Tl extraction process from Pb-Tl liquid solutions of initial Tl content of approximately 0.05% mass using PbCl2 or, alternatively, Cl2(g) conducted in laboratorial scale. The tests made it possible to establish the influence of time, temperature, mass and the method of introducing the extractants into the liquid upon the level of Tl extraction from a Pb-Tl solution. Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. The response was good-one of the best the SAIMM has had to its various questionnaires. 231 replies were received from 2768 members representing a response of 8,35%. For fellows and Members together, the response was 13,7%. The spread of responses based on respondents' work situation appeared to be well balanced with some bias from those in consulting organizations. Members' perceptions of their employers' positions withrespect to environmental management looked somewhat optimistic, but it is encouraging to note that they reported that more than half were developing environmental management systems. Training of varying degree was taking place at al levels in their organizations. Members saw their Institute as an important agent inlifting environmental awareness, literacy and responsibility not only through the journal and symposia, but also by liaison with government departments and educational institutions. Most respondents saw environmental legislation both from local and overseas sources as affecting their organizations, their products and services with the emphasis on corporate image, core business and sales.

"Mining in the Carletonville area of the Witwatersrand Basin predates 1934. Owing to the depletion of higher grade ore, the current activities focus increasingly on the extraction of lower grade secondary reefs as well as remnant extraction. Of particular interest is multi-reef remnant extraction. Numerical modelling was conducted to investigate some rock engineering aspects of remnants being understoped on a secondary reef horizon. An analysis of the stress evolution in the middling between two reef horizons indicated that a zone of high major and low minor principal stress develops between the two reefs. This indicates a high risk of violent shear failure. Some pillars were nevertheless successfully understoped in the past and a study was conducted to better understand this phenomenon. An ’extended’ energy release rate concept introduced by Napier and Malan (2014) proved to be useful for investigating this problem. It was found that bedding planes and lithology appears to play a role in the stable dissipation of energy in multi-reef remnant geometries. The study indicated that the stope convergence and the various energy components are affected by the presence, position, and properties of a bedding plane. The energy solutions are complex and sometimes counterintuitive. Care should be exercised when modelling specific cases. The modelling was nevertheless valuable as it indicated that energy dissipated on weak layers may reduce the risk of violent failure in a multi-reef mining scenario. Additional work is required to investigate if crushing on the reef plane plays a prominent role when mining these remnants. IntroductionTo extend the lives of the Witwatersrand gold mines, work is being conducted to include a larger number of remnants and pillars in the reserve base of the mines. According to Jager and Ryder (1999), a remnant is an unmined block of ground surrounded by extensive mining. Remnants are typically left because of adverse or difficult mining conditions caused by geological structures, poor ground conditions, low grade, or rockburst damage (Durrheim, 1997). In contrast, pillars are typically the result of rock engineering designs to control energy release rates (ERR) and seismicity. During the early 1900s, remnants formed by the practice of scattered mining layouts had a significant effect on seismicity. Numerous task teams were appointed during this period. As the industry expanded, the severity of rockbursting increased and the research was formalized after the 1960s. Various recommendations were made and many of these are still used as best practice today (e.g. Jager and Ryder, 1999)."

In April of 2013 a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace producing silicomanganese was excavated in South Africa. One of the areas excavated systematically was the furnace taphole. The aim was to obtain a refractory wear profile of the tap-hole area, together with affected hearth and sidewall refractory. Subsequently, thermodynamic modelling was applied to quantify the potential for chemical reaction between refractory and slag and refractory and metal in the tap-hole area.

Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

"A model of the flotation process can be used effectively for design and control. For design purposes it can be used to predict the performance of a large plant from laboratory and pilot plant data. It can be used for control purposes to assess the utility of any proposed operating modification to an existing plant, and it can also be used to determine optimal control settings for best operating performance.A model has been developed that will allow for variations in feed properties and for variations in fineness of grind. The model can be used to assess the effects of reagent addition rate, aeration rate and pulp level on plant performance and these are the control variables that are used individually or together in all operating flotation plants. The model provides for a distribution in the values for flotation rate constants, particle size and mineral fraction, and, because of its complexity, requires a large computer when it is to be applied to a typical plant configuration. The computational method that is used to apply this model to such configurations is described in this paper, and particular attention is paid to the problem of allowing for feedback of tailings from cleaners and recleaners."

In engineering design of operators? compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.

In this paper, a methodology for a computerised recognition of joint sets on 3D point cloud models of rock masses is presented. The process starts with classifying joints on a 3D rock mass surface through training a deep network architecture and validated using manually labeled datasets. Then, individual joint surfaces are identified using the Density-Based Scan with Noise (DBSCAN) clustering algorithm. Subsequently, the orientations of the identified joint surfaces are computed by fitting least-square planes using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC). Finally, the joint planes are classified into different joint sets, and the dip direction and dip angle for each set are calculated. The performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated using a case study. The results show that the presented procedure is fast, accurate, and robust.

A methodology for building pragmatic physics-based models is here adapted to predict the erosion of ladle linings in the steel industry, in order to support operators when deciding whether the lining can be used safely for another heat. A defective lining may allow 140 t of molten steel to spill, with disastrous consequences for workers and plant. The adopted work flow for the development, challenges faced, and some model results are presented. One key learning outcome is that model development should allow time for maturing the process understanding, as well as for many iterations by ‘questions-responses and actions’ at various stages in the model development. Good interaction between the development team and industry case owner is an important success factor. Combining or extending the model with the use of machine learning and cognition-related methods, such as knowledge graphs and self-adaptive algorithms, is discussed.

Wheel loaders are widely used in many sectors due to their mobility, operational flexibility, and low costs. The literature is mainly focused on improving the hydraulic, mechanical, and electronic subsystems of these machines in terms of efficiency or developing strategies for controlling these systems. In this study, the effects of the loader operator and different working conditions on the loading performance were investigated. The study was carried out at the Can Lignite Enterprise (CLI), which is a major coal producer in Turkey. In the study, which lasted approximately four months, a total of 808 measurements were performed to investigate seven different scenarios. The effect of a single parameter on loading performance was investigated in the first six scenarios. The results showed that the biggest impact on loading performance was caused by the operator's experience with 63.4%. On the other hand, the worst and most ideal working conditions determined from the first six scenarios were tested in the seventh scenario. It was tested as a script. The test results showed that the loading performance was 285.5% more effective under the most ideal operating conditions compared to the worst operating conditions. In addition, in the study, the loading performances of five loaders with four different capacities were examined in terms of energy efficiency and it was determined that the Kawasaki 115 work machine, which has a higher model and lower engine operating hours, was more advantageous. In the study, various suggestions were developed in parallel with the research results. The most prominent and easiest to implement of these suggestions is related to the selection of the loader operator.

This paper shows the importance of performing probabilistic analyses in open pits, especially for mine planning, which can lead to more efficient ore extraction and meeting the acceptability criteria for safety in mine slopes. Three-dimensional stability analyses were performed to evaluate the future geometry of a large open pit for iron ore extraction in Brazil. The strength parameters of the lithologies were calibrated using ruptures in the pit walls. After determining the factors of safety (FoSs) from the calibrated parameters, probabilistic analyses were performed using the total range of values of each parameter under different field conditions to verify the reliability of the initial analysis. In this sense, it was possible to plot the probability of failure (PoF) and the FoS on the graph of slope height versus slope interramp angle (IRA) for the future pit in each lithology. IRA recommendations are made for two scenarios: (1) the best scenario: dry without ubiquitous joints and (2) the worst scenario: the water table at 10 m depth with ubiquitous joints in the most unfavourable direction. The results show that probabilistic evaluation is an important tool for establishing alert mechanisms in slopes that can be termed stable.

(Visitor) The levels of serum vitamin C in the blood of mineworkers were determined on the first and fifth days of the normal heat-acclimatization period (i.e., before and after exposure to heat) and again after I, 2, and 4 months of underground employment. Supplementary vitamin C was administered to the men during the heat-acclimatization period. Six groups of 20 men featured in the study and, except for one of the two 4-month groups, all the values were obtained after a full shift of underground work. It was found that adequate levels of serum vitamin C were maintained during the heat-acclimatization period, and the 250 mg of vitamin C given daily to each man must therefore be regarded as sufficient. The serum vitamin C decreased significantly with time of exposure to underground conditions, showing that the vitamin C utilized during heat stress is more than that provided in the men's diet. At the end of 4 months, not a single subject had more than 0,4 mg of serum vitamin C per 100 ml, most of them having only 0,3 mg per 100 ml; 90 per cent of the men had had more than 0,4 mg per 100 ml during the acclimatization period. It is therefore recommended that the mineworkers' diets should be supplemented with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C per man per day.
