Process improvements in an operating plant are always challenging. Mineral beneficiation plants based on gravity concentration techniques need continuous evaluation and monitoring of its processes for getting maximum recovery and better grades. But, in an operating plant it is very difficult to control all the parameters due to numerous reasons such as unsteady operation, fluctuation in the quality of run-off-mine ore, overall flow rate etc. For better understanding of the beneficiation circuit, it is necessary to evaluate the critical operating parameters which affect the performance in terms of grade, recovery and throughput including losses of valuable materials into tailing. Accurate data collection and proper data interpretation followed by making necessary change which is implementable in an operating plant play very critical role in performance of the circuit. In case of gravity operated beneficiation circuits of chrome ores where the quality of the feed and physical parameters varies continuously, the operators are required to modify the critical operating process parameters on continuous basis which is very difficult and tiresome. There are many causes of the data variability, including both error (sampling and assay), and real variation in performance due to changes in ore mineralogy, operating conditions and other factors. In this article, attempts made to evaluate the performance of ultra-fine beneficiation circuit in terms of silica reduction in the concentrate of chrome ore beneficiation plant (COB), India are discussed. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered during the study were also discussed. Results obtained from plant audit based on the above methodology has shown that SiO2 content in the concentrate can be reduced to <4%.

The paper discusses the experiences of a fast-track curriculum designed to provide the industry with engineers capable of working in minerals processing industry. The course has been done once before and the second course has been started. Students chosen have graduated from other fields of engineering. For the first course, twelve students were chosen from 152 applicants and for the second the twelve students were chosen from 96 applicants. The basic idea of the curriculum is to alternate between theoretical studies at the university and working experience periods at industrial sites. In addition, there are several one week assignment tasks at industrial sites. The theoretical periods are six to eight weeks long and there are three of them. During the first period, the teaching concentrates on unit processes and their chemical and physical background. The theme of the second period is mineral engineering systems; flowsheet development, process dynamics, control systems etc. The last theoretical period teaches environmental issues, leadership, project work and other similar topics. Each of the theoretical periods ends with an assignment week at industrial sites. The assignments are designed to wrap up the teachings of the period. For the industrial periods, the students are given learning goals, which have been discussed and designed with their industrial mentors. They are required to find relevant literature, make experimental designs, implement those designs, present the data, and make conclusions of their results. During these periods, a weekly meeting over the Internet is compulsory. The paper presents issues related to interference of mining activities with the environment. Exploitation of mineral resources causes primarily a modification of the landscape. All of the negative impacts on environment are short-lived and last as much as it takes to exploit the raw material. After the mine closure reclamation is necessary during which all aspects that reduce harmful effects of the mining activities on the environment must be taken into account. Current ways of reclamation allow recreating natural environment, which is different from the original and enriched in diverse new values. This requires propositions of new forms of converted land development through a detailed analysis of technical, natural, planning, economic and social sphere requirements. Before making final decisions regarding selection of direction of reclamation, a thorough analysis of the key factors has to be carried out. All steps related to the implementation of the reclamation project are shown in the paper using Limestone Mine "Górazdze" located in the south-western part of Poland as an example. This paper also presents an analysis of current ways of post-mining reclamation towards agricultural and forestry landscape, along with our own suggestion for their extension in order to preserve biodiversity. For choosing optimal solutions the most relevant criteria were considered: existing natural values and possibility of their protection. Taking into account the economic and social aspects, supported by natural potentials, implementation of tourism and recreation in this area were proposed. It was shown that this proposition would not interfere with the current trends of the natural landscaping. Finally, after completion of reclamation and land development in the considered mine area, creation of a geo-park was proposed along with appearance of geotourism in the area. To illustrate the proposed forms of post-mining land development in the form of maps, an ArcGIS(ESRI) software was used.

In the present study we discuss the value of multi-element geochemistry as a tool for semi-quantitative to quantitative bulk mineral characterization in geological and geo-metallurgical modeling of porphyry copper type deposits, with an emphasis on hydrothermal alteration associations, types and intensities. In mine production of porphyry copper deposits much effort is placed on ore grade and geological modeling, applied for predictive mineral processing behavior, from blasting, grinding, leaching or flotation, down to waste disposal and environmental management. High confidence geological models are commonly based on geological mapping of drill core and surface/ underground exposures, combined with discrete mineral characterization (e.g., petrography, QEMSCAN®, spectroscopy, etc.). Unfortunately these are expensive and applied to limited numbers of samples, thus lacking sufficient representation and not suitable for geo-statistical modeling. In addition, geological mapping always presents uncertainty, based mostly on qualitative estimates. The combination of information usually provides geological models that are hard to combine with geo-metallurgical data, much less with mineral processing predictive behavior models. The advent of multi-element geochemistry, at low cost, has allowed employment of such tools massively, yet little use is given to the data, usually focused on elements of economic interest (main ore and credits) and elements of negative impact to concentrates and/or process. Geochemistry reflects the mineral composition of rocks, thus allowing characterization of lithology, alteration types and intensities, and mineralization. As examples of such applications we present generic classification techniques which were developed on various porphyry copper deposits of northern Chile, these based on multi-element geochemistry, allowing for semi-quantitative to quantitative high resolution modeling of key aspects of lithology, hydrothermal alteration and mineralization, and which may be cross-referenced to metallurgical test samples and by that, to geo-metallurgical properties of rocks and modeling. In addition, as data is quantitative and continuous, modelling of gangue can benefit from geo-statistical modeling.

The authors have developed the RETAC jig (a modified TACUB jig) and have reported that the RETAC jig can separate relatively low density particles such as plastics. To further improve the separation ability, a hybrid jig (a RETAC jig with an air bubbler under the particle bed), which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities by the differences in the wettabilities of the particles was developed. Surface modification of plastics with similar wettability enabling separation in the hybrid jig and the effects of wettability control of the plastics using reagents are reported.

Bubble collisions with ore grains and a selective formation of the bubble-grain aggregates are necessary steps for flotation separation of useful and gangue components of an ore. For the attachment of valuable mineral grain to the colliding bubble a liquid film, separating the bubble and the grain needs to rupture during short time of their collision. High hydrophobicity of the grain surface is favorable because stability of the separating (wetting) film is much lower at such surfaces, that is, the film ruptures faster and at greater thickness. Simultaneously, it needs to be kept in mind and taken into consideration that high affinity to air is a typical feature of hydrophobic surfaces. Thus, when the hydrophobic surface is immersed into aqueous phase the air can stay attached to such surfaces and affect kinetics of the bubble attachment. The paper presents results and analysis of dynamic phenomena occurring upon the collision of the rising bubble followed by its attachment to hydrophobic (Teflon) plates of different roughness. The influence of the Teflon surface roughness, solution concentration, bubble size and impact velocity on bouncing of the colliding bubble, time of the three phase contact (TPC) formation and drainage time of the liquid film, formed between the solid and bubble surfaces, is described. High hydrophobicity, as showed earlier (Malysa et al, 2005), does not assure that each collision leads to the TPC formation and attachment of the colliding bubble. Roughness is the parameter of crucial importance for kinetics of the bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces (Krasowska and Malysa, 2007; Krasowska et al, 2009; Kosior et al, 2011). Enlarged roughness of the Teflon plate, from ca. 1 to 80µm, results in shortening the time of the TPC formation (bubble attachment) by over an order of magnitude - from 105 to a few milliseconds only. Higher surface roughness means that larger amount of air can be entrapped in bigger scratches and cavities of the Teflon plate during its immersion into aqueous phase. Results documenting importance of the air presence are showed and mechanism of the air facilitated TPC formation and bubble attachment to hydrophobic surfaces is described. In this study, the determination of optimal conditions for jig separation has been investigated with a TACUB jig separator. The TACUB jig, from which a Batac jig originated, is a useful gravity separator that is effective to separate crushed solid wastes as well as coarse ores. A mixture of crushed polyethylene (specific gravity 1.3) and polyvinyl chloride (specific gravity 1.5) was separated by a batch TACUB jig by varying the frequency (wavelength) and the amplitude (pulse stroke length). It was found that the sample particle layer in the separation chamber was fluidized without turbulence by the rising water pulse resulting in the separation. However, a too strong water pulse reduced the efficiency of the separation of the particles. The results indicate that the specific velocity of the rising water is necessary to fluidize the particle layer without turbulence to separate the particles. The expansion ratios of the thickness of the particle layer in rising flows were measured in a cylindrical column. The pressure losses by the particle layer were calculated from the expansion ratios and the velocity of the rising flows by Ergun?s equation. The curve of the pressure loss vs. the velocity of rising flow showed a maximum point corresponded to the point of fluidization. The velocity of a rising flow on the point of fluidization provided the optimal separation condition.

"The current sampling systems of ore flows or concentrates are based on the method of cross sections in point sampling and the method of scooping in reducing. The limited number of point samples in sampling and microsamples in reducing lead to big random and probable systematic errors. The paper defines the principles of sampling, which assure the absence of systematic errors and also provides calculation formulas of probable errors in sampling methods of cross and longitudinal sections as well as in samples preparation. The article sets the fundamental laws of sampling: the dependency of minimal mass of gross sample and number of point samples from mass of point sample in sampling from heterogeneous body; the dependency of a sample minimal mass from lumps’ size in preparation of carefully mixed samples; the dependency of point samples’ dispersion from duration of control period. The paper introduces the fundamental notions: lump variance; probable systematic error; methodical error. It also provides a solution of outstanding sample correct application in analysis results calculations. In application of automatic analyzers, mounted in material flows, the probable error connected with sampling, is calculated by the formulas for carefully mixed sampling bodies. The paper describes the developed and introduced sampling systems on the base of combined application of cross and longitudinal sections methods in sampling and preparation of samples. The advantages of this equipment are compactness, reliability, simplicity in service and operation, and for pulps it is adaptability in pipelines. Application of the developed equipment entirely excludes probable systematic error. The new systems of sampling and preparation of samples are introduced at 25 concentrating plants. Introduction of the developed systems at sampling balance points of concentrating plants allowed double reducing balance deficiency."

"Aqueous dispersions of air specifically prepared on the basis of flotation reagent solution acquire active properties in relation to the solid surface and may be imply as a medium for flotation ores. Such aerated solutions were defined as Activated Aqueous Dispersions of Air (AADA) with 5-6:1 ratio and the procedure of mineral separation was defined as a flotation process under non-equilibrium conditions. These procedures differ from conventional flotation mainly in reagent interaction with minerals through their adsorption films on gas bubbles simultaneously forming flotation complexes. Gas-liquid mixture is kept till an adsorption layer of reagents close to the limit value is formed on the surface of bubbles. The theoretical basis of AADA is considered.The results of two-phase gas- liquid mixture (AADA) were studied. Two versions of AADA were considered. Electrical surface potential of the air bubbles with the surfactant film, untreated minerals particles in Coulomb attraction and flotation complex formation were analyzed. Special flotation machines were constructed for separation of mineral suspension in air dispersion, whose effectiveness was confirmed in flotation of apatite waste of Kovdor ore. FK-9 machine introduced on Kovdor iron ore combine for the recovery of apatite from current departures of factory. The froth product contained 7.2 % P2O5, with recovery of 44 % apatite, which was processed for getting melted phosphoric-magnesium fertilizers."

Adjusting nature, type of galvanic pairs and forming three component system possible to enlarge emf circuits to 2.378 V.The role of ?2, as basic agent, for generation of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl ions.It was stated, that removing of metal ions from solutions occur mainly on account of sorption and hydrolytic sedimentation of iron oxihydrates.Determined separate stages of the process: coagulation, sorptions of admixtures on freshly formed ferric oxides and oxidizing destruction of organic components of effluents in presence of ?2 ? ?2?2. Shown efficiency of the method for removing of Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, As ions, as well as fluoride, phosphate and cyanide anions and oil products, surface-active and flotation reagents. Cleaned water can be recycled for some processes non-critical toward residual concentration of admixtures, as total salt contents is lowered on 60-75 % and reaching limits of concentration for toxic components.The concept of high power unit creation was developed, and galvanochemical pulsator is presented. The pulsator is not expensive, and exploitation expences are low, as well as servise is simple with high effectiveness, and capacity. The galvanoflotation process is developing, combining galvanochemistry and flotation of hydrofobic admixtures (oil, surface-active agents).The galvanochemical flotators are presented."

"It has been shown on the example of cassiterite that grinding in mills of the increased power lead to destruction of the fine crystal structure and consequently to change in physical and chemical properties of the mineral, that is its transition into mechanically activated state. The increase in mineral reactivity is related to both the growth of mineral specific surface and sharp decrease in the sizes of primary crystallites accompanied by essential increase in number of microdefects that is clearly expressed in its increasing solubility during interaction with corrosive mediums, especially with acids. Calorimetric measurements indicate that the thermal effect of SnO2 solubility increases considerably.These observations allow us to propose two techniques of hydrometallurgical treatment of cassiterite: direct dissolution of the mechanically activated mineral in acids, although it is a very power-consuming process, and mechanical activation of cassiterite in presence of metals that are able to release hydrogen from acids. Active hydrogen is released during interaction between the mechanical mixture of SnO2 and metal with acids and reduces tin from the mineral transferring it into solution.In addition to other technological properties, the flotability of cassiterite has been thoroughly studied. It has been found that it steadily decreases as activation proceeds because of increase in the degree of hydratability of particle’s surface. In this case, the mechanical activation is provided through tribotreatment of a surface rather than through fine grinding. On this basis we developed the technique of inverse cassiterite flotation with its subsequent transfer into a chamber product that considerably increase the quality of a tin concentrate.The observed technological effects may be generally explained by occurrence of the valenceundersaturated, strained (deformed) chemical bonds and other active centers on the cassiterite surface while decrease in its flotability - by formation of the hydrolyzed tin species and impurity iron, such as Sn(??)4°, Fe(??)2 +, Fe(??)3° hydroxocomplexes and others."

"SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separator utilizes the combined force field of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to beneficiate weakly magnetic minerals with the advantages of large beneficial ratio, high recovery, matrix not easy to be blocked and excellent performance.We have developed SLon-750; SLon-1000; SLon-1250; SLon-1500; SLon-1750 and SLon-2000 VP HGMS. Now more than 200 of them have been successfully applied in China.Application in Qi Dashan Mineral processing Plant of Anshan Iron and Steel Company: The iron ore consists of magnetite and hematite. In 2001, six SLon-1750 magnetic separators are applied to control the tails grade of fine hematite. The results of flowsheet is: feed grade 30.15%Fe, concentrate grade 67.00%Fe, iron recovery 75.86%. The results set up the historic high record of this plant and the processing coast is greatly reduced.Application in Gushan Iron Mine of Ma Anshan Iron and steel Company: There are 6 SLon-1750 and 4 SLon-1500 magnetic separators applied in this mine to treat refractory hematite ore. The feeding grade is about 45%Fe. The final iron concentrate grade is about 60%Fe and the iron recovery is about 76%. The results are much better than the previous gravity flowsheet.Application in Meishan Iron Mine of Shanghai Baoshan Iron and Steel Company: The mined ore consists of magnetite, hematite and siderite. Because of a relatively high content of phosphorus, the iron concentrate could not meet the market requirements. Now 18 SLon-1500 magnetic separators are applied to reduce phosphorus, which is reduced from about 0.4%P to 0.246%P. The quality of iron concentrate is greatly upgraded.Application in Panzhihua Ilmenite Processing Plant: In the past, the -0.045mm ilmenite fraction was discarded in to the tails because of lack of high efficient equipment. In 2001, the plant built up a magneticflotation flowsheet to recover the fine ilmenite from the -0.045mm fraction with 6 SLon-1500 magnetic separators. The total results are: feed grade 11%TiO2, concentrate grade=47% TiO2, recovery 44%. Each year the flowsheet recovers 60,000t fine ilmenite concentrate."

"Comminution not only is the major energy cost in mineral processing but it also can limit the grade of ores that can economically be processed. Rittinger first postulated that the energy for comminution is proportional to the new surface produced. Because most of the strain energy needed to initiate and propagate cracks in particles cannot be recovered, researchers reported woefully low comminution efficiencies. Recognizing this, Schoenert proposed that the baseline for assessing comminution efficiency should be the mechanical energy needed to break single particles. After extensive single-particle studies, Schoenert turned to comminuting beds of particle in piston dies. Finding particle-bed comminution to be energy efficient, he had the brilliant conception of making the process continuous, namely his invention of the choke-fed high-pressure roll mill (HPGR). Practical comminution involves masses of particles, which can lead to energy efficiencies far less than that of single-particle breakage. A three-way classification of grinding modes in terms of the mobility of the particle mass provides the necessary insight into the low efficiency of different comminution machines: namely, single-particle breakage, confined particle-bed grinding (HPGR), and loose-bed grinding (ball mill). Examples are given for determining and comparing comminution efficiencies. The size distribution of comminuted products become self-similar, and a single parameter, the median size, can be used to quantify the extent of comminution. The reduction ratio, expressed in terms of the mean size of the feed and product, varies linearly with expended energy and the slope of such plots is a measure of the grindability of the mineral. This approach clearly gives the order of energy efficiency as single-particle > particle-bed > loose-bed comminution. HPGRs are more efficient at low reduction ratios but lose that advantage at higher reduction ratios. Extensive hybrid grinding experiments carried out with our instrumented ball mill and HPGR showed significant energy savings by first comminuting the material in the HPGR and followed by the ball mill. At Cerro Verde an industrial-scale hybrid HPGR/ball mill system is reported to have a 13 percent energy savings over a SAG mill/ball mill system."

"Karagedik Chromite Concentrator of the ETI Holding Co., which is located in Fethiye (south Turkey), has been producing chromite concentrate assaying 47-48 % Cr2O3 from the chromite ores containing 30-35 % Cr2O3 by using gravity separation methods since 1920. The tailings having 13-14 % Cr2O3, which had been removed from this plant, were accumulated at the stockpiles amounting about 1.2 million tons. In order to recover the ultra fine chromite particles from the Karagedik Concentrator tailings, the new process including Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation and column flotation, was developed and the Karagedik Research Pilot Plant based on this process was commissioned in 2000. At this plant, the final concentrates assaying 46-48% Cr2O3 were produced and overall plant recoveries are about 60-65%.At the chromite concentrators using gravity separation methods, if their material size is about minus 1.0 mm, chromite particles especially pass to fine fractions according to their mineralogical structures and the ore-genesis (Önal and Güney, 1990). Generally, after crushing and grinding, the shaking tables and spirals are used at the chromite concentrators; therefore fine size chromite particles (-0.038 mm) are removed as tailings. Cr2O3 content of the -0.1 mm size fraction with 52.3% of the total amount is 19.58 % with Cr2O3 distribution of 82.6%.In order to upgrade the minus 0.1 mm size fraction of the tailings, assaying about 20% Cr2O3, Karagedik Research Pilot Plant (KRPP), which includes Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) and Column Flotation units, was installed by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Mineral Processing Section in 2000.Feeding material of the KRPP having 5 tons per hour capacity is obtained from stockpiles amounting 1.2 million tons. After attrition scrubbing, the feed is sent to a screen with aperture of 1.0 mm. The screen overflow, assaying 5-6 % Cr2O3 is removed as tailings. Screen underflow is classified to –1.0+0.1 mm and minus 0.1 mm size fractions by using cyclone and sieve bend. –1.0+0.1 mm size fraction assaying 6-7 % Cr2O3, is sent to existing gravity separation plant. Minus 0.1 mm size fraction is firstly fed to WHIMS for pre-concentration and non-magnetic product assaying 10-11 % Cr2O3 consisting of serpentine, talc and olivine minerals are separated as tailings. Also magnetic product (25-30 % Cr2O3) obtained from WHIMS is fed to the two stages conditioners after dewatered to 30 % solid ratio."

A dual-drive planetary mill, which has a rotating shaft that sweeps a circle of diameter 750 mm, has been designed. The planetary mill is powered by a 5 hp motor to rotate the main shaft and a 3 hp motor to rotate the jars. The charge dynamics inside the horizontal-axis planetary ball mill was established using three-dimensional DEM simulations. The simulation results provided data to determine the impact energy distribution and the effect of process parameters such as mill speed and filling. It has been observed that the mean impact energy per unit time increases with rotation-to-revolution ratio, whereas the average number of inter-particle impacts per unit time decreases. The mill was also used to synthesize a variety of powders. Here three case studies of reaction milling are briefly presented: (i) cementite and silicon carbide, (ii) oxide dispersed strengthened (ODS) steel, and (iii) magnetite from blue dust. In each case, the powder was produced by mixing and then milling the corresponding pure components. The phase evolution, particle size distribution, and morphology of particles during milling were studied for various samples collected at different milling times using laser size analyzer, SEM, TEM, and Mössbauerspectroscopy. The results established a convenient way to produce powders of high technological and commercial value.

"Pulp handling in mineral processing circuits is very complicated due to its inherent different specifications compared with other fluids such as water. Because any variation in ore property (e.g. size and abrasion index) and pulp specification (e.g. density, solid content and pressure) causes problem in this part and reduces the plant availability and throughput as a result. The most common issues in the hose system are sumps and pipe-line blockage, wearing of the pumps impeller and liner, and pipe tearing specially at elbows and bends. High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) is employed in a closed circuit with a screen as the first stage of grinding in Zarand Iranian Steel Complex (ZISCO). Wearing of the pump and pipeline transferring the screen undersize stream was the main problem from the plant commissioning. The plant couldn&apos;t achieve to the design capacity because of this defect. Although various practical solutions such as improving the pipes and impeller material quality and eliminating the elbows, as much as possible, were done in order to downtime minimizing, but damages didn’t vanish. Since HPGR discharge contains somewhat rough and abrasive particles, the mentioned modifications didn&apos;t effective very much. Therefore, converting of the wet screen to dry and using of belt conveyor to the screen undersize handling was employed based on the plant capability evaluation and experimental and pilot trial results. Although this reformation imposed another additional cost (for conveyor system), but it had significant advantages such as increasing the plant availability up to 96%, reducing the operating costs of the wear parts, providing more stable operating condition for the HPGR performance and decreasing abrasion rate of the HPGR rolls liner because of the lower moist feed."

"The paper presents research on hydrodynamic processes occurring at the elementary act of flotation. Discussed existing models to determine the effectiveness of conflict of bubbles with particles in vibration column flotation machine. The paper presents a disperser for a column flotation machine, in which the dispersion of the gas phase is carried out using vertical vibration with defined frequency and amplitude. The paper presents research of mechanism for the creation of air bubbles in vibratory column flotation machine. The factors influencing the increase in the duration of the bubble in the area of contact with the mineral particles are discussed. Research was carried out on the effect of frequency and amplitude of vibrations on speed of precipitation of mineral grains of different density. Formulas are derived for the parameter effect of vibrations, applicable to the design of flotation machine. The collision efficiency of the bubbles in vibratory column flotation machine is determined. The vibrations of the hydrated layer allow for cost-effective implementation of the elementary act of flotation by providing larger relative velocities at the contact point between the bubble and the solid phase. It is proposed to complement the model more accurate representation the mechanism of attachment of the particles to the bubble."

The recovery of water for re-use in minerals processing is an important issue in the reduction of water use in mining, as is the dewatering of tailings to reduce the propensity of ?wet? tailings dams. It is common in these dewatering operations to use thickeners whereby polymeric flocculants are combined with the dilute feed to the thickener to aid sedimentation and the subsequent consolidation of particulate materials. Thickeners are the workhorses of water recovery and tailings dewatering and although the basics are well understood, there is still no ability to reliably predict the throughput and underflow density from a thickener based on traditional sedimentation tests and flux analysis. The reasons for the discrepancy between full-scale operations and predictions based on laboratory tests are numerous, including difficulties in mimicking the flocculation conditions experienced in the field and the shear conditions in the thickener. The latter effects are little understood and hard to quantify and include effects due to flocculated aggregate densification, complimentary shear and compressional effects and aggregate break-up. Developing a set of test protocols to quantify the effects of densification, shear in compression effects and aggregate breakup and the subsequent contributions of each to compressional dewatering in a thickening environment has been completed for a simple model polymer flocculated particulate suspension. The data and analysis shows that aggregate densification is a dominant contributor to the difference between observed and predicted behavior based on laboratory tests. A major consideration in the analysis is the fact that common thickener operations are permeability limited and although the various effects are all important, the one that results in the fastest water release is dominant. Of interest also are the shear rate, concentration, and time dependence of the aggregate densification process. A basic model of the process has been developed along with network yielding tests conducted using rheometry. "Energy is the major concern for society. It is expected that developing country economies and populations will grow and consume more energy. Interest in nuclear power is rising, while the world looks for non-depletable energy source that will not contribute to global warming. However, it still has concerns of nuclear proliferation, radioactive waste and safety. It is necessary to overcome these concerns if nuclear energy is expanded to developing countries. Thorium (Th) utilization as nuclear fuel will be an opening key of these difficulties because Th produces less Plutonium (Pu) and less radioactive waste with enhanced safety. Research into the use of Th as a nuclear fuel has been taking place over forty years, through with much less intensity than that for uranium (U) or U-Pu fuels. Nuclear industry is currently using only 0.7% of the available energy from mined U. With huge resources of Th and relatively little U, Turkey has made utilization of Th for large-scale energy production a major goal in its nuclear power programme. Thorium fuel is plentiful and inexpensive. Energy is major concern for developing Turkish society. Turkey, today exports more than 70% of its energy as fossil fuels. In the last 50 years, Turks are skeptical, anxious and indecisive about having nuclear energy for electricity production. In the last 10 years, Thorium is brought into Turkish government’s attention and national discussion as a new, safe, clean, affordable, CO2-free, alternative, strategic and domestic nuclear energy fuel. Turkey recently contacted four VVER-1200 type Russian Nuclear Power Reactors using U as a fuel in Akkuyu (Rosatom) and another four units will be established in Sinop in the next decade by Japan (Mitsubishi-Westinghouse). Turkish nuclear programme must envisage use of domestic Th as a fertile material. This paper briefly reviews the developments of Th-fuel cycle for nuclear energy from global and Turkish perspectives. Previous Th reserve development and recovery studies from Turkish bastnasite ore are summarized in this paper."

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration.
