In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

In comparisons of a trial extruded brick containing 33 per cent coalwash and 67 per cent clay and a trial pressed brick containing 100 per cent coalwash with a standard extruded clay face brick, the mixed feed stock trial brick compared favourably with the standard brick. If a highly plastic clay is used to mix with the coalwash, satisfactory results are obtained in respect to dimension, strength, water absorption, efflorescence, resistance to salt attack, hardness, colour, weathering, mineralogy and porosity. Although a brick containing only coalwash can be successfully manufactured in a press, its mechanical and physical properties are inferior. This mixed feed stock brickmaking technology leads to the utilisation of a by-product with a potential saving of raw material costs. The extent of use is likely to depend on the proximity of the coal washery and the brickworks and the economicsof transportation costs.

The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

Discovery of the Vera-Nancy deposit in late-1995 followed 12 years of active exploration in and around the Pajingo Epithermal System, an andesite hosted veinfield covering an area of 150 square kilometres at the northern end of the Devono-Carboniferous Drummond Basin in North Queensland. Early exploration targeted open-pittable resources in the numerous auriferous veins and it was not until 1994 that exploration focus shifted to drilling to depths below about 100 metres from surface, which resulted in the Vera-Nancy discovery. That deeper drilling process is still at a very early stage of coverage of the epithermal system as a whole and substantial potential exists for additional discoveries.Drill-out of Vera-Nancy has to-date established a gold resource in excess of 1.4 million ounces. Mine development is proceeding via a twin decline system with first stoped production scheduled for August 1997.

SUMMARY Tyres account for 25-30% of the operating costs of large capacity haul units as used in open-cut mines. Tyre operating costs can be substanti- ally reduced and often contained in real terms by applying knowledge that is now available. This paper describes certain specific advances in tyre management, namely batching, bias adjustment, cumulative plotting and the so-called "pressure-temperature" system of tyre pressure control, originated on the Mt. Newman Mining Company's Newman minesite, and discusses the contribution that each has made to improving tyre management and reducing costs. INTRODUCTION Tyres are a significant cost in mining. "Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in project reporting may lead to a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, resulting in biased estimates or assumptions on project value.This paper provides a simple ‘Resource Project Framework’ for presenting a project’s status that may be readily benchmarked against other similar projects and to illustrate the stages required to advance the project outcomes to higher levels of certainty. The framework draws on definitions and guidelines readily available in various resource industry reporting codes and public company reporting requirements.The framework assesses three key areas for placing a resource project in its correct relative context, namely:the project development stagethe confidence in the Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and/or Ore Reservesthe level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the reported results or options for the project.The application of the Resource Project Framework is illustrated using two project examples, one from publicly reported company project releases and the other for two development projects.CITATION:Noppé, M A, 2016. High stress in rock masses can cause significant instability problems such as squeezing deformation in soft rock and rock bursts in hard rock. The support system applied in burst-prone areas in high-stress conditions is required to be able to carry high load and accommodate large deformation of the rock mass without experiencing any serious damage. Yielding support systems are promising to provide support for both squeezing and burst-prone rock mass encountered in mining or tunnelling at depth. They are ideally strong and stiff initially and then ductile after yielding (Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou, 2020). With respect to support design, a ground support system has to create a safe working environment under both static and dynamic loading conditions by providing the functions of reinforcing, retaining, holding and connecting elements (Cai and Kasier, 2018). Rigid rock bolts and cable bolts perform reinforcing and holding functions of a ground support system. In highly fractured ground or with large excavation spans (eg at roadway intersections or in caverns), unstable ground depth can exceed the length of typical rigid rock bolts (ie greater than ~3.0 m). In such cases, flexible cable bolts are needed to tie the reinforced and retained rock mass back to deeper and more stable rock. The flexibility of cable bolts allows anchor lengths greater than the tunnel opening that would otherwise restrict rigid bolts. Cable bolts also offer higher strength to weight ratio, with tensile strengths 2–3 times that of standard rebar bolts. This high strength comes at the cost of lower strain tolerance, typically around 5–7 per cent at break. Despite the lower strain tolerance, cable bolts are often used as dynamic support in demanding burst-prone ground conditions. The lower strain tolerance is compensated by allowing sufficient free length for stretching or incorporating a yielding device. There are a number of dynamic cable bolts available on the market and a number of testing campaigns have been undertaken to quantify the dynamic performance of these cable bolts. This paper reviews the existing range of dynamic cable bolts and discusses the potential areas for improvement and further research.

Whilst the value of Pit to Plant and Mine to Mill optimisation has been proven since the 1990s, sustaining the productivity and efficiency gains typically requires ongoing test work, blast trials, plant surveys, and model calibration services. In contrast, the input to digital twin Pit to Plant or Mine to Mill optimisation is tens to hundreds of millions of tonnes of standard mine operating data. This paper presents a series of digital twin case studies from across the mine value chain, including machine learning testing methodology, model accuracy statistics and the application of Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) for model interpretation. These case studies demonstrate how machine learning and data fusion ore tracking connects hundreds of millions of tonnes of downstream performance data to produce digital twin models (operating models that are continuously updated and integrated into the wider Mine to Mill/Pit to Plant ore tracking system). Digital twin modelling software has been used to add block model variables for dig-rate, crusher and mill throughput, recovery (tailings grade), lump yield, product grade and product quality, fines yield and fines in lump. Block-by-block predictions are added to the geological resource and grade control block models as new block model variables. These new block model variables are used across all mine planning time horizons from life-of-mine planning to daily schedules. In addition to the materials handling and geometallurgical prediction case studies, the paper also presents digital twin case studies for drill and blast simulation and plant set point optimisation. The case studies show how digital twin simulation enables drill and blast engineers to simulate the effect of different blast designs in different blast domains using the mines operating data. Plant set point optimisation applies mathematical optimisation algorithms to the machine learning model to provide live operational decision support to metallurgists and plant operators. The digital twin machine learning case studies demonstrate a digital and sustainable paradigm for Mine to Mill and Pit to Plant optimisation.

Conventional batch cell and FASTFLOT pilot plant studies of reverse flotation of coarse marcasite and pyrite (100 - 400 μm) to reduce the sulphidic sulphur content of a rutile concentrate, were undertaken. The batch cell experiments found no significant improvement in sulphur removal with acid wash and copper activation of marcasite and pyrite. Batch cell trials also identified potential difficulties of conventional mechanical cell plants operated at 40 per cent w/w solids. The FASTFLOT 250 B-2 pilot plant trials indicated that with a 0.6 - 0.7 per cent w/w feed sulphur content, target product grade can be met on a routine basis by a three-stage FASTFLOT plant floating coarse marcasite and pyrite. The trials found that 150 g/t PAX dosage and 15 minutes conditioning time are adequate reagentisation for 40 per cent w/w solids feed to the FASTFLOT plant.

The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.

At New Celebration Gold Mine the advent of treating primary sulphide ores resulted in decreased gold recoveries of four to ten per cent. The grind coarsened due to an increase in ore hardness and gold in the residue was found to be associated with pyrite. Finer grinding improved recoveries but was impractical as production rates would have decreased to unacceptable levels. An alternative approach that has proved to be viable combines both gravity separation, to recover the coarse gold bearing sulphides, and then regrinding the concentrate in a tower mill prior to releaching in the cyanide leach circuit. The tailings treatment plant was commissioned in December 1990 and details of the first 18 months' operations are Provided.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

"The Mbalam Iron Ore Project covers mineralisation in two areas of metamorphosed hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-west Congo Craton; namely at Mbarga in south-east Cameroon and at Nabeba in north-west Republic of Congo. The site locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.The Mbalam Project history is an example of a compressed, yet highly successful, exploration timetable. Due to the thick inaccessible equatorial forest location, the first access was by helicopter in February 2007 at the Mbarga Deposit. Drilling commenced four months later in June 2007. A maiden JORC Code compliant æhigh-grade hematiteÆ inferred mineral resource (190 Mt at 60 per cent Fe) was defined in May 2008, followed by a maiden æitabirite hematiteÆ inferred resource in July 2008 (1.2 Bt at 37 per cent Fe). Subsequently, road access to Nabeba was established in January 2010, with a maiden high-grade hematite inferred mineral resource (200 Mt at 63 per cent Fe) identified only five months later in June 2010. A maiden itabirite hematite inferred resource at Nabeba was announced in June 2012 (1.4 Bt at 34 per cent Fe). The success of the exploration programs has been due to two main factors: Establishment of high-quality camps and facilities at Mbarga and later at Nabeba in Republic of Congo. Exploration support included satellite links for site servers and communications, field logging computers, data acquisition software, an on-site sample preparation laboratory, portable hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and company-owned drill rigs from 2009. An experienced and dynamic technical support group based in Perth to provide database facilities, data evaluation, internal auditing and software support, resulting in expedited resource estimation and economic evaluation with state-of-the-art mining software. In June 2012, Sundance Resources Ltd announced the current mineral resources for the project of 775.4 Mt at 57.2 per cent Fe of high-grade hematite and 4.047 Bt at 36.3 per cent Fe of itabirite hematite. In December 2012, high-grade hematite ore reserves of 436.3 Mt at 62.6 per cent Fe were announced. These world-class resources and reserves have been delineated and evaluated in a very rapid time frame. RIG Technologies has developed new technology that can successfully acquire high quality natural gamma ray (GR) and hole deviations, downhole while drilling, on reverse circulation drills. This technology survives the hostile downhole environment with shocks of between 400–2500 g for 7– 10 days at a time. The Logging While Drilling (LWD) service eliminates the need to run in-rod surveys, either by the driller or by wireline trucks and crews. This time saving is in the middle of the drilling process, thus enabling drills to keep drilling and increase their productivity. Additional to the natural GR and directional survey, the downhole tool is equipped with sensors to measure the downhole dynamic response of the drilling system providing insights into rock hardness, density and potentially clay types. These parameters have never been acquired behind the hammer before and coupled with surface measurements from the drills themselves, form a rich data set for trainable machine learning algorithms shortening the time to receive advanced geophysical answer products from sometimes months, to live feeds directly from drills (Hopper, 2019). Alive, high speed, two-way data link between surface data acquisition systems and downhole geophysics tools has been established and incorporates calibrated surface measurements of dynamic forces directly on the drill string to match up with those measured downhole. Receiving live streams of natural GR and hole deviation surveys as the drill is drilling allows true remote decisionmaking with live data available anywhere in the world. The combined data from surface and downhole dynamics builds a data set that could begin to enable true optimisation of autonomous drilling processes.

As mobile equipment electrification in underground mining continues to gain popularity, control ofheat and humidity in the workplace is becoming a key driver in sizing of ventilation and mine aircooling systems. For design and sizing of ventilation and cooling systems to be accurate, and for themine mobile equipment fleet to be sized appropriately to meet production goals, vehicle productivitymetrics, heat modelling, and energy balances for electrified fleets need to consider operation througha realistic duty cycle that is reflective of various tasks performed during a shift.The authors conducted a real-world comparison of two 8 cubic yard (14 metric tonne) class Load-Haul-Dump (LHD) machines – one diesel and one battery-electric vehicle (BEV) – performingidentical muck-haul-dump operations on consecutive days at an underground nickel/copper hardrock mine in Ontario, Canada.The battery-electric LHD averaged 8.9 per cent faster cycle time than the diesel vehicle (gross,without accounting for charging time), and was able to transport 25 per cent more material per cycledue to a larger bucket capacity. When including the charging time, average net cycle times wereequivalent for the two vehicles over the 200 cycles. The BEV carried more payload over the eighthour period due to the increased capacity per cycle.The testing identified an approximately five-fold reduction in heat output from the BEV in comparisonto the diesel LHD on a basis of heat output per tonne of rated bucket capacity. Heat output from thefast charger was found to be approximately 4 per cent of the charging rate, with negligibletemperature change observed in the main drift. External noise levels in the mine were found to be14 dB lower for the BEV during transit and 11 dB lower during bucket loading. Fuel/energy costs forBEV electricity input were approximately four times lower per operating hour than diesel fuel costbased on typical 2021 electrical and diesel unit rates for a grid-connected mine in Ontario, Canada.

The effect of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) on the flotation behaviour of bornite and tennantite is reported in this work. Flotation tests were performed using pure minerals of bornite and tennantite under various concentrations of sodium sulfite at pH 9. The flotation results indicated that sodium sulfite exhibited a depressing effect on the floatability of bornite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. However, tennantite remained floatable after the addition of sodium sulfite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. The flotation tests using mixed bornite and tennantite confirmed the flotation results of single minerals. Surface characterisation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to explain the flotation results. A mechanism is proposed based on the XPS analysis results.

"Since the adoption of open-door policy 30 years ago, rapid economic growth has resulted in serious resource depletion and environmental destruction, especially in mining areas. As an urgent response to this situation, the central government and the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) have adjusted policies with concrete and realistic actions for halting this trend of non-sustainable mining activities in China. æGreen Mine CampaignÆ is one of the actions implemented. In 2010, MLR announced the æGreen Mine CampaignÆ, in which existing and new mines will be evaluated against the æGreen Mine Construction StandardsÆ and certified as æGreen MineÆ if complying with these standards. The standards cover five key aspects: the considerations of science-supported resource exploitation efficient resource utilisation standardised management environmental friendliness harmonious community relationship.Every year, MLR reviews ægreen minesÆ from all provinces. Thirty seven mines, including coal, metal, non-metal, gold, chemical industry and building materials mines, passed the review and were certified as green mines in 2010. In 2011, 187 out of 194 mines that participated in the review were certified as ægreen minesÆ.
