Part 2 of this article continues with a discussion of features that distinguish contemporary investment analysis in mining from earlier methods. Part 1 traced the evolution of evaluation methodology from the traditional and discounted cash flow methods to the present. Quantitative investment models of the past 20 years played an important role in mine evaluation, but a new integrated approach to mine investment decision-making is now developing because of growing economic, technical, and political uncertainties. One of those uncertainties -inflation-was discussed in Part 1. Increased Risk At a time when mineral production technology and analytical evaluation tools have never been more sophisticated, it may seem anomalous to claim that mining ventures are riskier. Whereas technical risk has, indeed, been notably reduced, business risk the chance of a major loss due to market factors-has increased. This has been caused by two factors: the rapidly rising capital requirements of new projects and increasingly unpredictable future economic conditions. These difficulties are compounded by the long lead times of large, new mining projects. Rising Capital Requirements A $100 million investment is no longer considered to be a large mining project in most cases. For a large metal mining project, the total cost of the concentrator alone can exceed $100 million. Amoco Minerals' Thompson Creek molybdenum mine being developed in Idaho will cost over $350 million, for a relatively modest sized (23-kt/d or 25,000-stpd) ore operation with no extraordinary features. For a major grass roots copper operation producing blis¬ter or refined copper, the capital requirements are billions of dollars, not millions. Project costs are higher for two reasons. One, the projects themselves are larger; and two, the capital cost per unit of production is rising rapidly. Projects are larger because lower grade ores, yielding smaller margins, must be mined in greater volume-particularly in view of the high fixed costs of modern technology. When analysts contemplate any capital project, an important consideration is the minimum economic size of the facility. This is the smallest size that can be built and still be competitive on a total unit production cost basis. In the conventional copper smelting business, for example, a production rate of at least 91 kt/a (100,000 stpy) of blister copper is about the absolute minimum for reducing unit fixed costs to competitive levels. Clearly, many variables affect the minimum economic size of a mining facility, but with few exceptions that size continues to grow. Unit capital costs of new mining projects also are continuing to rise. The accompanying table shows that the capital costs in primary copper production have risen faster than the cost of living. Of particular note is the capital charge of over $1.70/kg (77411b) required for a new, fully integrated facility in 1981. Thus, the mid-1982 copper price would not even cover the cost of capital for a new copper producing complex without considering the direct operating costs for such a facility. The breath-taking costs of new mining projects are caused by factors such as increasingly complex technology, the rising social costs of creating attractive living and working conditions for employ¬ees, and the expenditures re¬quired for environmental protec¬tion. For whatever reasons, how¬ever, unit capital costs in mining continue to exhibit staggering growth rates. Future Economic Conditions Risk is not only a function of the size of the potential loss-an im¬portant measure of which is the capital intensity of mining dis¬cussed above-but also of the like¬lihood of incurring the loss. It is here that the ever increasing lead times of mining projects and the glaring limitations of economic forecasting are so important. In comparison to nearly all other in¬vestments, mining has more capi¬tal at stake for a longer period of time before commercial uncer¬tainty is resolved by distant eco¬nomic conditions that are subject to high forecasting errors. A sobering example of the pre¬ceding points occurred with the Lakeshore copper mine in south¬ern Arizona that Hecla Mining Co. undertook to finance and manage in 1969. The current paper looks at evaluating the merits of large geared mills versus gearless driven mills by evaluating the following factors: The capability of currently available systems in terms of power and mill diameter Efficiency in terms of overall electrical power consumed vs mechanical output power Capital cost Running costs Cooling requirements in terms of air versus water cooling Installation and delivery time World?s largest geared drive ? 2x8500kW ? Wushan, China (operating) Among the many reasons that geared drives on large SAG mills are not favoured, is due to not having an efficient variable speed drive option (60 to 80% critical speed), which is required for process reasons. As technological advances have occurred quite rapidly in recent years, this paper uses the latest data in applying these comparisons and attempts to dispel some of the myths regarding Slip Energy Recovery (SER) and variable frequency drive technology on twin pinion drive systems. Early attempts to provide load sharing on twin pinion drives used primitive electronics which have since been developed to eliminate the problems encountered in earlier attempts. In particular, torque pulsations between the twin motors have been overcome using a higher number of devices (pulses) and better electronics. With successful operation of 2 x 6.5MW (Phu Kham, Laos) and three 2 x 7MW units under manufacture (Pascu Lama) and a further 40 projects worldwide, energy efficient Hyper Synchronous SER drives are now mature and ready for use on 2 X 10MW dual drive mills. Speed variation required is in the range of +/- 15% of synchronous motor speeds. VVVF drive packages from ABB and Siemens are also available for 2 x 10MW in low and high speed options. Dual hydraulic inching drives provide a much safer and convenient operation with the added advantage of locked charge detection.

Chemical and mineralogical characterization of Malaysian monazite, a phosphate mineral, bearing rare earth elements separated from the tin tailings originated from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, was performed in this paper. The study aims to collect detailed information on the chemical composition, crystal phases, and microstructure of the mineral monazite concentrate that would aid to optimize the subsequent hydrometallurgical processes for high-efficient separation of thorium and other associated rare earth elements. A systematic characterization study of the concentrate was conducted using techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques analyzed the morphological details on the surface, elemental analysis, and mineral association assessment and identified the surface functionalization groups. The bulk composition and the mineral phases in which the elements are present were studied by wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies respectively. The XRF analysis confirmed the presence of Ce, La, Nd, Pr, and Y (rare earth oxides: REO’s ~ 60 wt.%) while thorium dioxide (ThO2) accounted for 7 wt.% of the total composition. Traces of Ca, K, Al, Fe, Ti, and Mn were also confirmed by SEM elemental mapping. The XRD results confirmed that the concentrate was primarily composed of monazite (Ce, La, Nd, Th (PO4)) along with minor impurity phases of quartz. Automated mineralogical analysis was used as a confirmatory tool to corroborate the preliminary evidences. Based on the particle size distribution analysis supported by SEM, the majority of monazite grains were found to be present in the size range of 170–210 μm. Strong bands of PO4 and SiO4 were observed in the IR spectra corresponding to the phospho-silicate matrix of the REE mineral.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator was granted in 1881 in the U.S. this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with the development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generating, despite the low heating value of German lignite in the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 BTU/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is in the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output open pit mines. The largest one, Fortuna Mine in the Cologne district, produced a, total of 45 000 000 t lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95 200 000 bank m3 equal to 200 000 000 t overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE (Fig. 1) ever built is working in the Fortuna Mine, too. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 t, its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a 7-storey building.

An investigation of a hydrometallurgical method for the recovery of tellurium dioxide from cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film manufacturing scrap was conducted. Sulfuric acid/ hydrogen peroxide lixiviation was employed to selectively leach cadmium and oxidize tellurium to tellurium dioxide (TeO2). Experimental variables included solution pH, pulp density, oxidant (H2O2) concentration, temperature, agitation rate and residence time. After one hour of lixiviation, no noticeable increase in grade or recovery occurred; thus, all experiments were performed for one hour. Leaching results showed it was possible to recover at least 74% of the tellurium, while producing a 98% pure TeO2 product. Additionally, an apparent activation energy value of 12.1 kJ/mole (2.9 kcal/mole) was determined. This value, along with results from agitation rate experiments, indicated the reaction was primarily controlled by diffusion through the product layer. During lixiviation, partial dissolution of tellurium proved inevitable. Thus, a second step: ammoniacal precipitation was introduced to recover the aqueous tellurium as a precipitate. A statistical experimental design (DOE) was used to identify the significant effects from the residual effects. Experimental variables included precipitation pH, temperature, initial tellurium tenor and agitation rate. Precipitation results showed that it was possible to produce a low-grade (46% Te) precipitate, while recovering 98% of the aqueous tellurium species. The precipitation pH and temperature (°C) were determined as the significant effects for both the grade and recovery of tellurium. Agitation rate and initial tellurium tenor were determined as the residual effects and did not influence the grade or recovery of tellurium. An illustration of tellurium recovery, as a function of the significant effects, is illustrated in Fig. 1.

Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

Since 2016, electromagnetic interference (EMI) of personal dust monitors (PDMs) with magnetic proximity detection systems (PDSs) has been observed in underground coal mines. The EMI causes the magnetic field measurements of a PDS to change, which, in turn, alters the calculated location of the miner relative to the machine. Any altered location calculation can potentially cause the PDS to fail to warn a worker who is at an unsafe distance from the machine, arousing a serious concern on safety hazard caused by EMI in underground mines. The search for EMI mitigation strategies led to the development and use of large shielding pouches and boxes to hold the entire PDM to reduce its magnetic emission. Research on these pouches and boxes found that although they were able to reduce the emitted radiation from the PDM, they also disturbed the magnetic field of the PDS, affecting its performance. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.

Large amounts of limestone fines co-produced during the processing of crushed lime-stone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid. This reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities to within about 10 km (6 miles) of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power-generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufacturers and research scientists. There is a concern that CO2 generated from human activities is contributing to climatic and environmental changes. Approximately one-third of anthropogenic CO2 emissions come from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Each power plant is capable of emitting several million tons of CO2 annually. A variety of other industrial processes, such as cement manufacture, oil refining, and iron and steel production, also emit large amounts of CO2. The level of atmospheric CO2 can be reduced by capturing CO2 from point-source emissions and storing or sequestering it in isolation from the atmosphere (U.S. Department of Energy, 2003). In 1999, G.H. Rau and K. Caldeira proposed a geochemistry-based method that is referred to as accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) in a paper titled ?Accelerating carbonate dissolution to sequester carbon dioxide in the ocean ? geochemical implications.?

The ever increasing energy costs associated with mining at depth has become an important issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco Limited?s Creighton Mine being the deepest has the highest energy cost per ton due to the ventilation system requirements. A review of the ventilation systems was undertaken with respect to current practices and identification of opportunities to the practical application of technology that would facilitate energy savings. Energy conservation initiatives such as time of day controls have been implemented; however there still remained some opportunity for further reduction. Based on previous studies that identified opportunities due to actual time spent in the workplace, our mining method and ventilation design, it was determined that Ventilation on Demand (VOD) could provide further additional energy reductions with respect to our auxiliary fans. A pilot project has recently been initiated to apply a Ventilation on Demand concept to two 112 kW auxiliary fans and their related workings located on the 2340m level of Creighton Mine. The project objective is to determine the practical methodology and application of this technology in the field. This project involves the installation of variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on the auxiliary fans to allow variable volume (through speed control) based on demand. The required flow is determined based on equipment and/or personnel via identification tags. The Fans adjust to the flow requirements as measured by flow sensors. Since the fans are sized for the final requirements the required flows can be achieved regardless of system length. Energy savings are realized by supplying only the volumes (power) as required and only when required. This paper discusses the rational and program being tested at the VALE Inco Limited, Creighton Mine.

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell's approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. [The Yarnell gold deposit in the Weaver mining district, Yavapai County, Arizona, occurs in a structurally controlled, hydrothermally altered zone in a 1700 Ma granodioritic intrusive. Both potassic and sericitically altered rocks around and above the low-angle, northeast striking Yarnell fault are known to host economic gold mineralization. A wider envelope of weakly-propylitic altered rock also occurs in this area. During mineralization, strong sericitization accompanied several stages of quartz (±adularia) veining, stockwork formation, localized silicification and potassic replacement, in association with deposition of specularite, pyrite (now oxidized) and gold. The footwall of the fault is also sericitically altered but poorly mineralized. Mineralization along the Yarnell fault continues both northeast and southwest from the main deposit, although the thickness of the zone and associated alter avian envelope diminish away from the orebody A sample of undo formed illite taken from the Yarnell fault zone was K/Ar dated at 69 + 1.6 Ma. This date reflects a minimum age for both mineralization and latest movement on the fault. Gold mineralization is accompanied by modest increases in Ag, As. Cu and Mo content. Both CO2- and H2O- rich fluid inclusions were studied and suggest mesothermal pressures and temperatures of formation for the deposit. Ninety-six reverse circulation holes and four diamond drill holes outline a bulk-minable mineral reserve of'4.1 million tons at 0.051 oz of Au per ton. An additional 2.7 million tons at 0.017 oz of Au per ton occurs in a low-grade zone above and subparallel to the main mineralized zone. Total calculated mineral inventory stands at 6.8 million tons at a grade of 0.038 oz of Au per ton, with a waste-to-ore ratio of 1.45:1. Column leach tests indicate that cyanide heap leach gold recoveries should exceed 70%.]

Asarco has been using computer-aided open-pit mine design since 1966. The in-house developed program package includes drill-hole analysis programs, interpolation routines, and three-dimensional open-pit design programs. The financial analysis step after pit design required that a reasonably accurate schedule be produced so that a good cash flow model could assess the feasibility of a project. The manual method of scheduling was too time-consuming for feasibility work, so a computerized scheduler was required. Since no computerized mine scheduling programs existed, we requested proposals from consulting firms to develop such a program. The selection of a consulting firm, the formulation of the contract and design specifications required about three years to accomplish. The consulting firm, Systems Control Inc. (SCI), of Palo Alto, spent over one year doing the programming and testing alone. The details of the program development were reported in "Computerized Year-by-Year Open-Pit Mine Scheduling," SME-AIME Transactions, December 1974. In June of 1973 the program, which SCI dubbed Optimum Resource Extraction or ORE, was installed. Version 1 of ORE was utilized successfully on three separate properties over a period of two years. During this time it became obvious that some of the original design specifications were restrictive, and certain modifications were required. The ORE program was submitted for modification, and after one year version 2 was operational in May of 1976. The program now consists of approximately 20,000 lines of FORTRAN source statements grouped into 190 subprograms, and runs in a 450K region of Asarco's 370/148 in Cranford, NJ. The Tucson com¬puter (370/115) is tied to the Cranford computer via a 9600 baud leased T.P. line, for running mine scheduling and other large mine planning programs.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have focused on shielding internal PDM components rather than shielding the entire PDM. The PDM air pump motor is one of the PDM components that has been identified as a major source of electromagnetic radiation and has been selected for further study and tests. The measurements show that a small copper or aluminum foil enclosure can effectively reduce the magnetic emission of the motor by between 50 and 85% at 73 kHz. This study compares the test results of the air pump motor with various cost-effective shielding materials. The data provided in this paper can serve as a reference for shielding enclosure design of the PDM air pump motor to reduce its electromagnetic emission as one form of EMI mitigation strategy.

Kidd Creek mine has recently completed upgrades of its primary ventilation systems enabling it to maintain a delivery of 1200 m3/s to continue mining ore zones extending to over 3000 m below surface. Following these upgrades the mine initiated a multi-stage review of their ventilation usage. The focus of these reviews, ranged from a brainstorming session of invited experts, through an evaluation of production plans to a detailed analysis of production data to determine if the ventilation system could be run more efficiently, thereby reducing the mine?s power consumption and associated operating costs. The initial review identified 1500 kW of installed fan power that could be eliminated from the primary ventilation system. The benefits of the subsequent analyses, so far, are not as measurable. The second and third analyses, respectively using long range production plan data and historic production data to determine ventilation requirements based upon diesel equipment, did not agree. Both were shown to have limitations, the future based analysis underestimating, and the historical analysis overestimating the requirements. Regardless of the failings of each method, important outcomes were achieved from the detailed analyses, namely, the ability for a mine to meet a forward analysis prediction of airflow depends on its ability to adjust the ventilation to meet the dynamic nature of the mining process. Also, to minimize total ventilation requirements, a mine must regularly redistribute its airflow; this not only reduces the total volume requirement but also increases the variability of the delivered flows which can provide further operational savings. Since the detailed analyses, the Kidd Creek mine has implemented a more frequent ventilation review and redistribution procedure; consequently, it now operates with an average delivery of 930 m3/s, which is 23% lower than in 2005 at the start of the review process.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

The most complete mining show ever held in the United States and the largest exposition of its kind to be held anywhere in the world in 1988. That's how the American Mining Congress is billing its "MINExpo International '88," to be held April 24-28 at Chicago's McCormick Place, the largest exposition facility in the country. MINExpo International '88 will combine for the first time two previously separate AMC-sponsored shows - the International Coal Show and the International Mining Show. Starting with the 1988 show, MINExpo International will be held every four years. The next show, in 1992, will be held in Las Vegas. The MINExpo in Chicago will feature more than 500 mining equipment and services exhibits covering 3 hm2 (320,000 sq ft) of exhibit space. Exhibitors will display products ranging from small safety devices to large earth-moving equipment. MINExpo is one of the few trade shows selected by the US Department of Commerce for its Foreign Buyer Program. Commerce is working with US embassies around the world to publicize MINExpo and to form delegations of visitors from many countries. Overseas visitors to the show will be assisted at an on-site International Business Center. It will provide currency exchange, translation, and other services to foreign buyers. Registrants at MINExpo will also be able to attend their choice of 27 morning-only program sessions. At these sessions, international mining experts from industry, government, and academe will analyze technical, strategic, and policy matters and discuss the outlook for the industry. "Toward the 21st Century" is the theme of this year's program. The technical workshops and managerial seminars are designed to assist mining executives, engineers, and geologists as well as mine superintendents, managers, and foremen in handling their responsibilities. Based on previous attendance at AMC international mining shows, the association says that more than 25,000 persons are expected to attend the Chicago show. It is expected that approximately 15% of the attendees will be from foreign countries. The Soviet Union will be among those exhibiting at MINExpo. The Russians have leased more than 2.8 dame (3000 sq ft) of space to display their mining machinery and equipment. It is the first time that the Russians have joined in an exhibition of mining equipment in the US. The two largest manufacturers of mining equipment in the Soviet Union, Setmash and Avtoexport, will put on display in Chicago a variety of Russian-made equipment. It will range from 100 t (110 st) heavy-duty dump trucks and diesel engines to drilling, hoisting, and conveying equipment. In addition to some 400 US exhibitors of mining equipment and services at MINExpo, nearly 100 companies will be present from other major mining nations such as Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, and West Germany. And, for the first time, a Chinese manufacturer will take part in the AMC show, participating with its US marketing partner.

Introduction The cost of grinding may be divided into a fixed equipment cost portion and an operating cost portion. The fixed equipment cost is the amount of money required to purchase the grinding mill itself. This amount may be kept separate from the installation cost which, often, is taken as a percentage of the fixed equipment cost. A good average is 43%; therefore a $100,000 ball mill would cost approxi¬mately $143,000 installed. Operating costs are variable and paid per unit time for power, liner replacement, grinding charge replenishment, labor, and mainte¬nance including major parts replacement. Such costs depend on the geographical location and will vary with the cost of labor. Operating costs are difficult to estimate. Most mining companies consider such information proprietary. This section provides a means to obtain an estimate of the equip¬ment cost of a grinding mill with a rated accuracy of±l0%. Compara¬ble methods to determine operating costs are not available. Such costs are presented in table form with suggestions for updating them. Esti¬mating the cost of liners and steel replacement is possible as described in a later section. Capital Costs of Grinding Mills Grinding mill costs have been related,124 by means of equations and corresponding graphs, to the nominal horsepower requirements of mills. All graphs are based on a Marshall and Stevens cost index for Mining and Milling of 300, where a cost index is a ratio used to estimate current prices of equipment from obsolete prices. Where (Cost Index Now) Cost Now = (Cost Then) (Cost Index Then) (I) For example, the cost of an autogenous mill that requires a 3000¬hp motor is estimated as $500,000 (Fig. 95). This was the estimated price when the M&S (Marshall and Stevens, Mining and Milling) cost index had a value of 300. If the index is currently at 400, then the estimated current price of the autogenous mill is: Cost Now = ($500,000) (400) (300) = $667,000 Most professional journals will publish current values of cost indices at least once a month. In subsequent pages, each graph of grinding mill cost vs. mill horsepower has an associated graph of capacity vs. horsepower along with a table that relates mill size to horsepower. The associated graph and the table must be used with caution, since both apply to an average ore under average conditions. Example calculations showing how graphs should be used are shown in the following. It should be stressed that the cost data incorporated herein ex¬cludes the cost of pumps, motors, lines, and classifiers, unless other¬wise stated.
