In the past six years, the Hanna Mining Company has increased its pellet producing capabilities greatly by the construction and expansion of six pelletizing plants in North America. At the present time Hanna managed pelletizers have a nominal capacity of 18 million long tons per year. This capability makes Hanna one of the world's largest pellet producers. To create and maintain such an operation has required the skill and dedication of many people in all aspects of the company's activities, in the various fields of exploration, operations and research. The Research and Development Group consists of the staffs of two laboratories situated on the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota. These laboratories are well equipped to carry out work in the fields of beneficiation and extractive metallurgy especially iron ore treatment. Facilities exist for the batch and semi- continuous investigation of the unit operations common to iron ore beneficiation and pelletizing. The R and D Division is divided into groups according to specialized areas of interest. Presented in this paper today are some aspects of the activities of the Pelletizing Group of the Research & Development Organization.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion investment to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area and is the largest transit project initiated in Province’s history. Settlement control and impact to over 1400 adjacent structures due to tunnelling was identified early as a critical project risk. The ground conditions along the 10km tunnel alignment consist of water bearing soft ground deposits (clays, sands, silts) which required careful analysis and control during design and construction. This paper will describe the process used to analyze settlements along the numerous of adjacent structures and evaluate achieved settlement results to those used during design. The paper will demonstrate that with the appropriate design specifications, selection of modernized EPB machines, and contractor performance, settlement can be maintained well below typical industry (volume loss) standards, expanding the application and suitability of soft ground tunnelling in sensitive settlement areas. INTRODUCTION The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion (2010$ CND) investment from the Ontario provincial government to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area. The project is being developed by Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario to provide 19 kilometers of dedicated LRT service connecting the City of Toronto from the west to east along Eglinton Avenue. Upon completion in the year 2020, the Crosstown will be the first LRT constructed in Toronto. It will link regional and local transit, cut travel time along the route by half and provide over a thousand jobs during construction."

Stabilization of slopes on abandoned mine land (AML) invariably involves some channelization to control surface drainage. Typically, these channels are lined with riprap or gabions, depending on gradient and expected flow rate. The conventional treatments pose a problem since they require frequent maintenance and replacement at times. Soil bioengineering presents an alternative to the conventional measures. In soil bioengineering, living woody plant material forms the main structural component in systems designed to prevent shallow mass slope failures, surface erosion, and channel bank erosion. An experimental application of soil bioengineering techniques was designed and implemented at an AML site in eastern Kentucky. The design consisted of live fascines and live stakes using willow branches installed with coir geotextile. Channel gradient, length, and cross-section were considered in the design.

To most of you present here the word "refractories" is not new and you are familiar with the materials and use. To many people though the question is asked, "What are refractoriness and what are they used for?" Refractories are non-metallic products which are so resistant too melting at very high temperatures that they can be used for building or lining furnaces of all kinds. A large variation occurs in the size, form, and composition depending on the service for which they are intended. They are made from a wide variety of raw materials, of which fire clay and quartzite are used in largest quantities. Other refractory raw materials include magnesite, chrome, diaspore, bauxite, kyanite, sillimanite, olivine, zircon, and many others. Most of these are assembled from-widely-'separated points in the United States while others come from the far corners of the earth. Chrome is imported from the Philippines and South Africa, and, to a lesser extent, Turkey and Greece Kyanite and sillimanite come: from India and bauxite from the Guianas. And there's "magnesite from brines," produced in chemical plant's by treatment of sea water or inland deep-well brines with hydrated lime. The proportion of magnesia available in sea water is so small, less than one pound from 500 pounds of water,, that millions of gallons must be pumped and processed each day in a sea water magnesite plant. The realm of refractory raw materials, therefore, is very extensive and continues to grow because of the endeavor to find-better raw materials from which to produce better products for refractory service.

The U. S Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop improved guidelines for selecting the type and pattern of roof support in different geologic environments (Mucho, et al., 1995). As a part of this wider research effort, a multifaceted ground control investigation was conducted at the Diamond TB Mine of RoxCoal, Inc. The study included statistical analysis of mine-wide roof bolt performance, instrumented bolt test areas, stress damage mapping, and pillar design analysis. The mine employs state-of-the-art continuous miner technology, including mobile roof supports and continuous haulage, to retreat mine the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. A herringbone section design makes the stability of the center belt entry critical to efficient retreat mining. Roof cutters formed during section development sometimes set up unstable immediate roof conditions in advance of the belt entry mobile roof supports during retreat mining.

Water and wind erosion of toxic zinc and lead smelter waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems to be solved in the Silesia region of Poland. Over 87 x 106 Mg of various mining wastes were disposed of in uncontrolled piles leading to soil, water, and air pollution in highly populated areas. Welz and Doerschel process Pb/Zn smelter wastes were stabilized in the summer of 1994 by application of heavy loads of CaCO3 (30 Mg/ha), CaO (1.5 -15 Mg/ha), and municipal biosolids (150 -300 Mg/ha), followed by seeding with a mixture of acid-and salt-tolerant grass species selected in a pot experiment. Vegetation was successfully established on 85% of the Welz material demonstration plot area (0.5 ha), even though it was initially high in water-soluble Zn, Pb, and Cd ranging from 0.4 to 1311,0.1 to 5.8, and 0.05 to 55 mg/kg, respectively. Standing biomass averaged 3.3 Mg/ha on the stabilized Welz waste zone by the end of the third growing season (1997). The revegetation of much of the Doerschel material area failed initially because of extremely high salinity (16 dS m-1), high content of water soluble metals (Cd in particular), and heavy compaction. The area was capped (15 cm) with waste lime and retreated with bio-solids (300 Mg/ha) in 1995, and standing biomass averaged 2.9 Mg/ha in the fall of 1997. The observed plant response to bio-solids and lime indicates this approach to be an environmentally beneficial technology as compared to the traditional methods utilizing topsoil covers.

Industrial minerals or non-metallic minerals are loosely used terms applied to a diverse assortment of materials which, in many cases, have nothing more in common other than the fact that they are neither metals nor fuel minerals. To help bring order to this otherwise random assortment of minerals, we have grouped these materials into two main categories; chemical and physical minerals, and nine sub-categories based on end-use applications as shown in Table 1. Chemical minerals are products which are principally used for the specific chemical elements they contain, whereas physical minerals are products which are used to meet specific performance specifications. The latter part of the 1970?s, in particular 1978, were considered peak years in terms of production and sales for many industries, By using 1978 as a base year, we can evaluate wherethese markets stand today after the recession of the early 1980's and the recovery which began several years ago. From this historical overview and appraisal of the current situation, various assumptions can be drawn as to which markets are expected to perform well into the 1990's.

Under the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the accompanying House Conference Report, the Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines are charged with the responsibility of making recurring mineral studies of wilderness and wilderness candidate areas in national forests within and proposed for the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Wilderness Act, a major shift from the multiple-use concept of national forests, identified for the first time the value of mineral resource information in decisions for single-use designation of public lands. This concept was further realized when the Secretary of the Interior in May 1974 recommended that mineral studies be made prior to wilderness recommendations for five large Interior-managed game ranges and the Glacier Bay National Monument aggregating 7.8 million acres. Presently, our studies have been completed on 126 wilderness and proposed wilderness areas totaling 15.4 million acres in the national forests. In 1973, 1 year in advance of the act's 10-year review deadline, we completed the 34 primitive areas, originally the only potential additions considered by the 1964 Act.

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. Coal mine safety of the past was plagued by disasters that took the lives of thousands of miners. Through the years new mining methods, improved laws, and a commitment from the mining industry has reduced the frequency of such incidents to a minimum. History tells us that coal was mined in the early 1700's in Virginia primarily for use by blacksmiths -- most of that mining was done in the Richmond area. It was in those mines that methane was encountered; as workings became more extensive, methane explosions became more frequent. In the early 1800's the first recorded explosion occurred near Richmond, Virginia -- 40 men were killed.

Exploration is the systematically financed and technically oriented search for mineral wealth. Almost all established mining companies have an exploration department. The size of a company's search varies over the years as the company's profits, or the corporate philosophy change. While the established mining companies have exploration departments, they are also alert to acquiring discoveries made by others -- especially by prospectors and small companies without the resources to develop their find. The emphasis in some large companies stresses self-generated discoveries while others rely heavily on acquisitions; again, over the years the emphasis may alternate. In the last analysis, essentially all new mineral wealth was found through someone's exploration effort. Before we discuss how exploration is financed, it will be informative to analyze how discoveries have been made and by whom. Recently, the author conducted a survey of randomly selected major mining companies to answer these questions. Most companies responded and many went to considerable effort to give complete and detailed answers. I thank all for their help and cooperation. The questionnaire is attached as Appendix I. Appendix II is a list of the 400 companies that replied in a complete enough manner and format to be analyzed here. The results of the questionnaire are given in Table 1. The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.

Fermilab is constructing a large underground cavern in Limestone to house scientific equipment. The cavern will have a complex L-shaped geometry and about 215-foot depth with relatively shallow rock cover, with service/egress shafts accesses into the cavern. Three-dimensional analytical models were developed to study the ground behavior and support performance. Multiple rock constitutive and failure models were evaluated. The models were significantly impacted by the high lateral in-situ earth pressure at the site. This paper will describe the design approaches that were taken to optimize the cavern arch geometry to allow safe construction in shallow rock, and permanent support requirements.

Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems. Included are discussions of a full-scale laboratory test bed that was designed to simulate a working conveyor system as well as the challenges and successes of integrating the IoT system with the test bed.

Mill power models have been used in a variety of ways in industrial practice since power directly equates to throughput and fineness of ground product. We first start with Hogg-Fuerstenau Power Model and show how this model successfully predicted the power draw of many grinding mills in several mining operations. Then, we show how this model was on the verge of being able to predict the influence of lifter design on power draw. Next, we describe the discrete element model and how it overcame the issues faced by the previous power model. Using a DEM software known as Millsoft, we show the influence of lifter design geometry on power draw and analyze the power draw of rubber lifters versus the steel lifters via several case studies. As years passed, the two-dimensional discrete element model imbedded in Millsoft is superseded by three-dimensional discrete element method. Due to the gigantic computational power of graphic processing units, new computational codes that can do the tumbling motion along the entire length of the mill has come about. Here, we show the predictive capability of Blaze-DEM for ball and SAG mills.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents the result of research on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where and how much energy is being used. This developed system represents a framework for efficient management of energy consumption.

The LaModel program is widely used to calculate stresses and displacements on thin tabular deposits, particularly when multiple seams or complex mining geometry is encountered. The program itself allows the user to create multiple mining steps to show a progressive sequence of mining. However, LaModel considers each individual step as an independent steady-state condition, and any previous loading conditions of the materials are not tracked. It also does not consider any sort of dynamic stress change during the mining process. In certain circumstances, especially in multiple-seam situations, modeling a scenario of the seam of interest without considering the previous mining sequence in the off seams can potentially lead to inaccurate results. The primary objective of this paper is to present a situation where a potentially dynamic, unstable mining condition was encountered. It was not evident until the previous loading conditions in the off seams and the impact of dynamic stress changes in the active seam were considered. It is important to make the mining community aware of these potential modeling scenarios where the path-dependent nature of the mining sequence is of key importance. This paper presents a case history where room-and-pillar retreat mining was being conducted in a relatively deep cover stress regime where multiple seam interactions were present from both undermining and overmining. Mining in the active seam was being conducted with roomand- pillar mining techniques consisting of a series of parallel production panels being successively developed and retreat mined along a set of Mains. In this situation, the traditional global LaModel analysis without any path-dependent adjustments did not fully identify the area of poor conditions that were encountered. This paper explores the impacts of mining in the active seam on the lower seam which, in turn, has a negative impact on the active seam. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the three seams simultaneously. Based on the calibrated model, it is likely that retreat mining in the active seam resulted in increased stresses in the underlying seam that conceivably resulted in additional convergence and, most likely, additionally convergence of the pillars under the panel being developed. This in turn could have caused active subsid- The LaModel program is extremely useful for analyzing multiple-seam mining scenarios. As multiple-seam situations become even more prevalent, the potential for encountering a path-dependent mining scenario also increases. To successfully model path-dependent mining scenarios, the ground control engineer will be required to make sound judgments on the condition of pillars in sub-adjacent seams. These engineering judgments should be based not only on the current state of stress, but also on any prior or future states of stress. This means considering the stresses from over or undermining as well as stresses applied to the sub-adjacent seams from actively mining the seam of interest.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. Goldcorp Inc. has mining operations and exploration projects throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras; as well as partnerships in Argentina and the Dominican Republic. In rural areas of developing countries it is very common to have mining operations surrounded by diverse communities consisting of people with limited, or no formal education. This is fertile ground for anti-mining NGOs to cultivate. The limited educational backgrounds of the people, coupled with a company desire to maintain a low profile can lead to a problematic lack of trust between the local communities and the mining company. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, Goldcorp has implemented various programs to build trust at these operations, as well as incorporating this policy into any new projects prior to commencement of operations. This paper is intended to describe two initiatives that have shown positive results for both the communities and the Marlin Mine.
