HINDERED SETTLING CONCENTRATION In the free settling of mineral particles in a liquid, the falling particles are at a distance from each other so that no particle is affected by its neighbor. In hindered settling, the concentration of particles is sufficiently high so that each particle is affected by its proximity to other particles in the suspension. Richards and Locke86 have described the hindered settling phenomenon as the condition “.. where particles of mixed sizes, shapes and densities in a crowded mass, yet free to move along themselves, are sorted in a rising current of water, the velocity of which is much less than the free-falling velocity of the particles but yet fast enough so the particles are in motion." This is the condition normally encountered in mineral con¬centration processes. The well known Newton equation for free settling of coarse (ap proximately +10-mesh, 1/16-in. or -- 2000-µm) spherical particles is:87 where v," is free settling velocity, cm/sec; p' is density of the fluid; p is density of the particle, g/cm3; d is particle diameter, cm; g is acceleration due to gravity, cm/sec2; and Q is coefficient of resistance, dimensionless, ~0.4. For the settling of fine spheres in water (approximately 150 mesh or 100 µm) the equation of Stokes pertains:87 where µ is viscosity of the fluid in poises and the other symbols have the same meaning as those in Eq. 1. For particles whose size lies between about 10 mesh (--2000 µm) and 150 mesh (100 µm), their settling velocity can be determined from experimental data. These data are available in convenient form in the text by Taggart88 based on the original work of Richards. Alternatively, a Reynolds number-coefficient of resistance plot may be used to determine the settling rate of such particles.87 The settling rate of spherical particles under hindered settling conditions can also be calculated from Eqs. I and 2 by replacing p', the density of the fluid, by p" the apparent density of the suspen¬sion. The concentration of particles in the fluid thus imparts an appar¬ent density to the composite fluid or suspension greater than that of the liquid alone, resulting in a buoyant effect on the larger particles. Particle shape affects the settling rate of both coarse and fine particles. The general effect is to reduce their settling velocities and the effect is greater for coarse particles and for those settling under hindered settling conditions than for fine particles or free settling ones. For two particles of differing densities but settling at the same velocity under Newtonian conditions, the ratio of their diameters from Eq. 1, called the free settling ratio is: where L signifies the lighter particle and H, the heavier particle. Under Stokesian conditions the exponent would be 0.5. For hindered settling conditions the fluid density p' is replaced by the apparent density of the suspension, p", to obtain a generalized equation for the hindered settling ratio: assuming both particles settle in approximately the same regime. The free settling ratio as given by Eq. 3 has been called by Taggart88 the "concentration criterion" and is used to predict the effectiveness of any gravity concentration process (see Introduction to this section). Based on Eqs. 3 and 4, if two particles of densities pH and p,, settle at the same velocity, the diameter of the lighter particle will be larger than that of the heavier particle. For example, in the case of galena (pH = 7.5) and quartz (pL = 2.65) settling in water (p =1.0) under free settling, Newtonian conditions 3.9. Thus, a quartz particle nearly four times as large as a galena particle will settle at the same velocity. Any quartz particle just slightly less than four times the diameter of the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Under hindered settling, Newtonian condi¬tions in a suspension where p" = 1.65, dL/dH = 5.85 or any quartz particle just slightly less than about six times the largest galena particle may be separated from it. Reference to Eq. 4 indicates that a superior separation between two minerals of differing densities is favored by: (1) coarse particles settling under Newtonian conditions, (2) a large difference in (pa - PL), and (3) separation under hindered settling conditions where p" is high. Of course, there are practical limits to increasing p" excessively because at very high percent solids suspen¬sion fluidity would be lost and the hindered settling separation process defeated. Examples of hindered settling separators are the Dorrco-Fahren¬wald sizer,89 the Rheolaveur box 90 the Spitzkasten,89 and the Willoughby washer.91 These devices make a mineral separation on the basis of both specific gravity and size and all of them are essentially obsolete except for the Dorrco-Fahrenwald sizer and similar devices which still find application for the removal of coarse particles from a much finer particle assemblage and for preconcentration ahead of shaking tables. However, nearly all gravity concentration processes (jigs, tables, flowing film concentrators, heavy media separators) and many sizing devices (sizing classifiers, clarifiers, thickeners, hydrosepa¬rators) make use of the hindered settling phenomenon during the separation of particles. Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. The 1970s have witnessed the completion and successful start-up of several new non-ferrous metallurgical operations in the Western Hemisphere which utilize large semi-autogenous mills in the grinding circuits. These facilities' are arranged either as single-stage circuits, or in a two-stage configuration n with ball mills. Another major concentrator, designed with an autogenous mill, ball mill, crusher (ABC circuit), is presently under construction and scheduled for start-up late this year. The large primary mills employed in these circuits have high diameter-to-length ratios and are designed to accept a very coarse feed, i.e., the product of a primary gyratory crusher, or run-of-mine ore. This characteristic obviates the need for a secondary-tertiary crushing plant or, in selected cases, even a primary crusher, which is a basic requirement in feed preparation for conventional grinding mills. This paper discusses three such grinding circuits and, presents operating data for two of them: the Island Copper Mine of Utah Mines, Ltd., near Port Hardy, British-Columbia,- and the Pueblo Viejo Cyanide Leach Plant of Rosario' Dominicana, S.A. on the island of Hispaniola. The design criteria for the Cyprus Bagdad Concentrator under construction' at Bagdad, Arizona, are also included. Data pertinent to these circuits are tabulated in the Summary.

The "Athabasca oil sands" of the McMurray formation in northeastern Alberta cover an area of about 21,000 square miles and contain the world's largest reserve of oil. Fort McMurray, a small town in the heart of the oil sands area, is about 235 air miles north- east of Edmonton. A railway serves the town but no year-round roads connect the town with the rest of Alberta. (Figure 1). The McMurray formation is of early Cretaceous age, deposited unconformably on a limestone surface of Devonian age. The sediments appear to have originated from the Canadian Shield to the east and were deposited in bays and deltas of large fresh water lakes. The lakes were later replaced by marine seas in which t the overlying Clearwater shale was deposited. (Figure 2).

Mining activities at Kennecott and Park City are similar in that both districts began operation in the last half of the 18th century, and both operated on a large scale for many years. However, they are different for two important reasons. First, the mines in the Park City district were always underground. The city of Park City was above many of those mine workings. It remained in place after mining activity stopped, and as the town became an up-scale ski resort, property values increased and the tailings dumps became desirable building sites. In contrast, Kennecott eventually became an open pit mine, and the growing pit effectively consumed many of the small towns that had grown up around the underground workings. Even towns on the periphery of the open pit were razed to allow for the disposal of mine overburden. Second, almost all mining activity stopped in Park City in the early 1970s, just as the first rigorous environmental legislation in the United States was enacted. (The Ontario mine operated sporadically until 1982.) Many mine structures, waste dumps, tailings ponds and piles, and tunnels were simply abandoned as the mining companies ceased business or were bought out. Kennecott, on the other hand, has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years, so a closure plan hasn’t been finalized. Nonetheless, environmental and social problems have arisen, and the company has had to address them.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been recognized by the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) as the most common job-related disease in the United States. Roughly 30 million workers are exposed to excessive noise levels or toxins that are potentially hazardous to their hearing. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR)is investigating noise controls to reduce operator overexposures caused by haul trucks used in underground metal/non-metal mines. To identify the most significant contributors to the overall sound level, Source Path Contribution (SPC) analysis was conducted. Noise dosimetry and time-motion analysis were also conducted to quantify operator noise exposure. SPC analysis determined that, under high idle conditions, a source near a hydraulic pump mounted to the rear of the engine and the engine cooling fan were the major noise sources. The time-motion/dosimetry analysis showed that the operators accumulated more than 90% of their noise exposures while they were hauling ore to the dump site and traveling back to the load site unloaded.

"The paper presents dimensionless design diagrams for estimating the stand-up time of a tunnel face in saturated ground of medium-low permeability. The diagrams cover a wide range of ground parameters and apply to shallow tunnels (overburden less than two diameters). As the time-dependency of the face stability in water-bearing ground is associated with the consolidation process in the soil ahead of the tunnel face, the stand-up time is determined by means of hydraulic-mechanical coupled spatial stress analyses. The results presented are important for tunnel engineering practice, e.g. when estimating the feasibility of atmospheric interventions in the working chamber of a closed shield. INTRODUCTION The response of water-bearing medium-low permeability ground to tunnel excavation is time dependent. The time-dependency is due to a transient seepage flow process that is triggered by the excavation and develops slowly over the course of time. Experience shows that the short-term behavior the ground is more favorable than the long-term one: the deformations increase with time; the tunnel face may be stable initially and fail only after some time. The time over which the tunnel face remains stable is called the stand-up time. This paper investigates the time dependency of the tunnel face stability assuming that all time effects are due to consolidation rather than creep. This assumption is reasonable for shallow tunnels crossing water-bearing soils. In the problem under analysis, the unsupported tunnel face remains stable under the undrained conditions prevailing after excavation, but collapses before reaching the drained conditions prevailing at a steady state. The assessment of the stand-up time is important from an economical point of view for both mechanized and conventional tunneling through weak water-bearing ground, as a long stand-up time removes the need for face support or ground improvement works during standstills, thus saving time and money, while short stand-up times require hyperbaric interventions or the implementation of costly and time-consuming auxiliary measures."

INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. Generally, the local small gold mining sectors play an important role in development of China's gold mining industry, and are important and attractive sectors. PRESENT DEVELOPMENT

In January, 1969, the Central Research Division of Continental Oil Company initiated a research program on roof control. The purpose of the research was to improve roof stability. Toward this end, it was necessary to determine which of the many geological and geometrical variables have a significant effect on roof stability. The isolation of these significant variables would allow research effort to be concentrated where it would be most effective in improving roof control. The research effort was directed toward two major objectives. One was to de-fine the geological and/or geometrical parameters that affect the severity of roof conditions in any particular area of the mine. This study was concerned with roof fall intensity. The second was to define why roof falls in Humphrey No. mine (and in northern West Virginia-south-western Pennsylvania coal mining areas) are oriented so that they occur primarily in north-south rooms or entries. This study was concerned with roof fall orientation. To provide a reference framework for further discussion, a geological description of the area is presented in Part II. In Parts III and IV, the procedures, methods, and 'results of the research applied toward the afore-mentioned major objectives are presented. Part V contains the conclusions and recommendations for-warded by this study.

The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents with particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and the conditioning time were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating on the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power P, to the minimum power Pm' required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P /P m ratios. At higher P /P m ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect on it. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a 74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 (47 rad/s) rpm. Under the optimum conditions of mixing, recovery was improved at low collector dosages and short conditioning times.

Research at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has shown that high-purity rutile can be produced from relatively low-grade ilmenite obtained from a massive rock deposit. Ilmenite is first smelted in an electric-arc furnace to separate the iron and produce a slag enriched in titanium dioxide. Titania slag mixed with a phosphate flux is then oxidized to synthesize rutile and form a phosphate-glass matrix which contains the impurities. Attrition scrubbing the treated slag in dilute solutions of phosphoric or sulfuric acid liberates the rutile, which is concentrated by physical methods. Tests show that synthesized rutile containing 95 to 97 pct titania responds to chlorination at the same rate as natural rutile.

Slurry reactors are being used extensively throughout the chemical, biochemical and mineral processing industries. This paper describes the interaction between fine ore particles and granular porous adsorbents such as activated carbon and ion-exchange resins in a stirred tank reactor. Gold and silver cyanides were used as adsorbates to detect changes in the mass transfer characteristics of the adsorbents, which were ashed to determine the loading of ore particles. A simple kinetic model incorporating film diffusion, intrapanicle diffusion ~d the adsorption equilibrium, was used to interpret kinetic data and to estimate the effect of slurry conditions on the diffusion parameters. It was observed that the equilibrium loading of fines in the adsorbents was independent of their concentration in the slurry. Furthermore, the presence of these panicles inside an adsorbent decreases the effective diffusion of gold or silver cyanides into the adsorbent matrix. When fine suspended solids are present in the reactor, a decrease in the effective availability of the superficial surface of the pre-saturated adsorbent panicles for mass transfer from the liquid phase was observed. This newly defined surface availability factor was dependent on the concentration, panicle size, and the zeta potential of the fine particles in suspension.

"Highwall miners continue to be implemented by operations to increase recovery, improve margins, and justify higher stripping ratios as high quality surface reserves become increasingly rare. Many times, operations facilitate projected underground operations by leaving an intact highwall for development purposes. These facts result in larger highwalls that are left standing for increased periods of time prior to reclamation. As a consequence, worker exposure and risk is also elevated, resulting in higher potential for accidents or fatalities relating to surface highwalls. Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent on both geologic and mining factors. Dynamic numerical modeling offers the capability to assess possible stability issues related to blasting-induced ground vibrations. Research has been conducted to evaluate the effect of highwall stability due to ground vibrations from blasting events. Additionally, the relationship of amplitude and frequency, and their impact on highwall stability is investigated. The results of this modeling indicate that amplitude has little impact on stability. However, frequency has a significant impact on highwall stability. INTRODUCTION The number of mining fatalities has declined since 2010, and 2016 is currently on pace to continue this trend (MSHA 2016). This decline can be directly correlated to the decline in surface mining activity and the overall decline of the coal industry. However, since 2002 the percentage of surface coal mine fatalities associated with highwall activities remains relatively high, constituting approximately 15% of all surface mine fatalities. 2014 was the first year with a highwall failure fatality since 2011. Most recent surface coal mining fatalities are associated with machinery and haulage. Table 1 provides a summary of the total surface coal mining fatalities, and the number of highwall failure fatalities dating back to 2010.Highwall stability is a complex issue, dependent upon geology and geologic discontinuities within the rock mass, along with highwall geometry, standing time, and applied stresses. Another possible concern that has not been previously investigated is the effect of blasting-induced stresses on highwall stability and the stability of web/barrier pillar systems as a result of ground vibrations from blasting events. Many modern surface coal mines employ numerous extraction fronts that rely on blasting for primary rock breakage. This results in highwall and highwall pillar systems experiencing blasting-induced stresses of many different types and magnitudes."

It's indeed a pleasure for me to speak to you today about the development and operation of large-scale surface coal mining projects in the western United States. It is an exciting story about American business working to solve a critical national problem -- the energy shortage -- through research, new technologies, financial innovation, and imaginative management. The North American Coal Corporation -- the second largest independent mining company and ninth largest United States coal producer -- is proud to be a part of this story. Our operations in North Dakota reflect the coal industry's Western activities. So, today, I would like to focus on our planned involvement in that state. I'll briefly survey why North American is developing large- scale surface mining in North Dakota, and I will outline the many problems associated with this coal development and how we are working to solve them. Finally, I will look at the financial and management techniques we are using to make it all work. In short, I'm going to present a case study of Western coal mining. Let's begin by looking at the reasons we are in North Dakota. The United States Bureau of Mines estimates that 44 per cent of the nation's total recoverable coal deposits underlie the three Northern Great Plains States of North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. We estimate that North Dakota alone has about 25 billion economically surface-mineable tons of coal with today's technology. North Dakota has the energy that could keep our factories running and our homes lighted In the years ahead.

Storing natural gas in solution mined salt cavities appears to be one of the more promising methods being considered by some major gas transmission companies for meeting peak demands. Historically, these companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's position was further complicated because some of its offshore Gulf Coast gas supply wells may have to be shut in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution was to construct. solution mined salt storage caverns adjacent to its pipeline near Eminence, Mississippi. (See Figure 1.) In 1965, Fenix & Scisson, Inc., was engaged by Transco to evaluate the feasibility of storing natural gas in caverns dissolved from salt at selected locations along Transco's pipeline to the East Coast. In June of that year a report was submitted to Transco concluding that this proposal was feasible and recommending several potential sites for storage development. Additional engineering and geological studies followed and in March 1968 the Eminence Salt Dome site was selected and storage construction began that year.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.
