Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world's leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia's two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

In 2012, a single module heavy medium cyclone plant (HMP) was installed at the Glencore Zinc’s (then Xstrata Zinc) McArthur River lead zinc mine. The HMP formed the first part of the MRM Phase 3 Project to increase run of mine (ROM) capacity from 2.4 to 5.5 Mt/a.The purpose of the HMP is to remove liberated gangue from the crusher product at minimal loss of valuable mineral. The McArthur ores are very finely disseminated requiring a fine primary grind size prior to rougher flotation. Rejecting waste prior to grinding therefore offers significant power and grinding media savings. The plant was designed to treat only those ores with a reasonable upgrade ratio at the target zinc recovery across the HMP of 95%.On this basis, a 1.8 Mt/a single module plant was built based on 250 t/h feed rate and 82% availability. In contrast to existing base metal heavy medium plants in Australia, the MRM Flow sheet utilised the principles in modern coal heavy medium cyclone plant design. Since commissioning, the plant feed rate has been significantly increased and is now normally operated up to 540 t/h (dry basis).Although this throughput increase is partially due to debottlenecking work, it is also attributable to the conservative design parameters for base metal heavy medium cyclone circuits in comparison to those used in equivalent coal circuits.This paper discusses Flow sheet design and compares traditional base metal design parameters with those achieved at MRM and those of modern coal plants. It provides information on plant capital and operating costs and the net savings realised by its installation. It is certainly an honor to have been invited to address the Deep Foundation's Annual Meeting on such a vast and weighty topic as "Present to Future Design Considerations of Deep Foundations." Acknowledging the enormity of this 30-minute assignment, I hope to at least scratch the surface of the topic deep enough to generate some thought and reflection. Design considerations, be they current or future, bring to mind a number of important subtopics which comprise the design process. As shown by Figure 1, a flow chart of this process describes, in general terms, the sequence of a deep foundation design.

In the late 1970's and early 1980's a considerable number of large scale open pit mines were developed in N.S.W. and Queensland. At the time these mines were planned, the industry was characterised by rising coal prices, rising fuel prices, and a host of other labour and government constraints different to the situation today. Yet some mines have clearly been able to cope with this change much better than others. While one mine may now be expanding and profitable, its neighbour may still be labouring under painful adjustment processes. This paper examines the major reasons for this difference. It suggests more robust criteria for assessment of future projects to reduce their sensitivity to changes outside management control.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 11pp., 15 refs. Hazards such as vibration, dust emission and fragment projection can result in an area called the Danger Zone being set around a blasting site. Traditionally Danger Zones have been set solely on the basis of consequences (e.g. based on the maximum distance of rock projection or expected ground vibration plus a defined safety margin). Advances in risk assessment and its growing acceptance as a safety management tool have led to the setting of Danger Zones based on both consequences and frequency of occurrence. This allows distances to be optimised on the basis of acceptable risk levels rather than the potential consequences of infrequent events. The setting of a flyrock Danger Zone is used to demonstrate a risk-based approach compared with a traditional consequence approach

Mineralogical analysis of a nickeliferous laterite from the Rockhampton region shows that the nickel is largely associated with the manganese wad and opaline silica. The laterite also contains an appreciable chromite content (about 12 per cent Cr2O,) although this tends to be poorly liberated.Leaching with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, at atmospheric pressure at the boiling point is non-selective with respect to iron dissolution.The degree of dissolution increases as the acid concentration and retention time are increased; cobalt dissolution requires less aggressive conditions than does the dissolution of an equivalent amount of nickel.Leaching with sulphuric acid at elevated temperatures and pressures leads to a minimum amount of iron dissolution, is rapid, and requires a reduced acid addition rate. Nickel and cobalt recovery from the clarified leachate would be simplified because of the leach selectivity.Pressure leaching appears to be the most practical route for treating the Rockhampton laterite. The economics of processing would be made more attractive by the recovery of a chromium concentrate from the leach residue. This would typically contain about 45 per cent Cr2O, and could be used as a source of chromium chemicals.

Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

Blast design in the construction industry has often been based on past practice or powder factors. This is to some extent understandable, since construction projects do not have the longevity of mining or quarrying operations and therefore have less opportunity to pursue potential improvements. The main concern of the operator is whether or not the technique will work, and at what cost to the downstream processes. Time, not long term savings, is of the essence.

Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

"Exploration results over three overburden drilling anomalies defined by the Ontario Geological Survey in 1981 in the Kirkland Lake area, Ontario are presented. The anomalies come from lowland areas where overburden is thickest. By mapping the bedrock and surficial geology, by prospecting, humus sampling and shallow till sampling over the surrounding upland surfaces, one can initially evaluate such overburden drill anomalies without costly reverse circulation drilling. The drilling should follow, if necessary, only after surficial base data has been obtained. Preliminary work on these three properties has defined the presence of at least two styles of gold mineralization. One occurs in silicified zones in intermediate volcanics closely associated with northwesterly trending faults and shear zones. The second occurs in quartz-carbonate alternation zones in volcanics intruded by quartz-feldspar porphyry dykes. IntroductionThe three examples presented in this paper present first-hand information on an approach to the follow up of several geochemical anomalies that were found by the Ontario Geological Survey when they carried out reverse circulation overburden drilling as part of the Kirkland Lake Initiative Program (KLIP) in 1980 (Routledge et al., 1981). The initial approach is relatively simple, systematic, and cost and technically effective. It readies the properties for further exploration, or conversely, it could downgrade the properties as viable gold targets."

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. The term slag has been used to define a wide variety of material including mine spoil and slag produced at steel plants. The present paper is concerned only with the non-metallic alumino-silicates developed simultaneously with iron in blast furnaces.The control of iron quality by slag has long been appreciated but here aspects of slag control based on concurrent iron production are indicated. Consideration is given to the basic composition of slags relative to the type of allotrope required. Up to a point, the plant conditions, under which a particular slag type is processed, have some effect, but these conditions only widen the range of a given allotrope.They do not convert one slag type into another. The nature of the slag types and experiments with additives to convert one slag type into another are discussed.The various uses for allotropes of blast furnace slag are considered.Their use in air cooled slag, foamed slag, slag wool, cements, soil stabilization, glass bottles, and building bricks and blocks, is explored in some detail.INTRODUCTIONWithin recent memory, blast furnace practice has been solely concerned with the production of iron. The slag make at this time had not reached embarrassing proportions. In Britain, unlike Germany, no legislation existed to prevent the growth of unsightly slag banks. Generally slag found limited use as fill and road material in the immediate plant vicinity. This is broadly the case in Australia today. In Europe and America, where the slag make is of the order of several million tons annually, the room problem and the cost of dumping slag has stimulated commercial and scientific research on the disposal problem. Currently, most iron plants in Europe can profitably dispose of at least 95 per cent of their slag make.

"The Central Mukur deposit was discovered by the Semipalatinsk Geological Exploration Expedition (GEE) during detailed searches from 1977 to 1980. Andas Altyn Ltd., a Kazakhstanian gold mining company acquired the property and commenced mining in 1995. In 1998, Andas-Altyn Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corporation.The Central Mukur gold project covers a linear series of parallel, discontinuous zones of near surface oxide gold mineralization that covers a distance of 7 kilometers and extends past the property boundaries. The oxide gold mineralization is a result of the regional oxidization of a primary sulfide gold mineralization emplaced in a series of shallow dipping thrust faults. Resources as calculated by the GEE are 3.45 mt at an average grade of 1.84 gmt Au in the C1 +C2 category and 7.52 mt at an average grade of 1.80 gmt Au in the P1 category. The Central Mukur Gold Heap Leach Mine consists of an open pit, heap leach pads, and an ion exchange resin gold recovery plant. Limited gold production (<2,500 ounces/year) has been achieved over the past three years leaching run of mine oxide gold mineralization. Gold recovery utiling cyanide to dissolve the Au and ionic resin technology to recover the Au for the leachate is approximately 60%. Loaded resin is shipped to a treatment plant at Almaty where the gold is stripped from the resin, refined and sold.This paper will describe the geology, mining, and processing of the Central Mukur ore. In addition, it will describe what it is like doing business in Kazakhstan and the transition from a Soviet style operation to a more western style operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Central Mukur Mine is owned and operated by Andas-Altyn Ltd. a Kazakhstanian gold mining company located in northeast Kazakhstan. Andas-Altyn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurasia Gold Corp., a Canadian public company listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. The Central Mukur mine consists of a small open pit, and a heap leach operation that utilizes ion exchange resin to recover gold from pregnant solutions. In addition to the Central Mukur mine, Eurasia also owns the Myaly heap leach gold project which is also operated by Andas- Altyn Ltd."

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

A post-detonation debris collection project was led in conjunction with a large ammonium nitrate(AN) railcar detonation conducted by the Department of Homeland Security-Transportation Security Administration, Department of Defense-Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office, Sandia National Laboratories, and the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Grounds. This important work will aid in underpinning algorithms used in a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) tool. The test also provided valuable data about the effects and consequences following an AN detonation. The test took place at the Utah Dugway Proving Grounds on April 27, 2018 and the debris collection was conducted the following two weeks with an average of 20 persons per day and an approximate total of 1,400 manhours. A paper was presented at the 2019 ISEE Conference on the collection efforts, challenges, and lessons learned. A complete data analysis effort was completed on the test data in 2019 that resulted in updates to the QRA Railcar Potential Explosion Site (PES)model and AN engine. The analysis included an assessment of the debris data resulting from the Derailed test. This paper is meant to serve as a summary of the analysis effort and findings and as an update to the previously presented lessons learned from the debris collection and analysis effort.

Penetration and dissolution mechanisms are reviewed for predominantly single-phase oxide, two phase oxide and oxide-carbon composite refractories by liquid silicate slags. Theoretical models of these processes, as well as static (sessile drop, dipping and crucible) and dynamic (rotating finger and rotary slag) experimental tests, along with their practical limitations are considered. Direct (congruent or homogeneous) attack is controlled by the reaction rate at the slag-refractory interface or the rate of diffusive transport of species to it through the slag leading to active corrosion. Indirect (incongruent or heterogeneous) attack is controlled by diffusive transport through the slag or through a new solid phase, which forms at the original slag-refractory interface. This may lead to passive corrosion. Examples of direct and indirect attack in a range of refractory/slag systems are described highlighting the critical influence of the composition and hence viscosity of the local liquid slag adjacent the solid refractory. Penetration and corrosion can be controlled either through the local slag composition via the refractory or the bulk slag or by microstructural control of the refractory by e.g. internal generation of dense layers or external deposition/generation of passive coatings, so-called in situ refractories.

"Since Escondida began operations in fiscal 1991, a series of aggressive expansion projects have enabled market share to be increased and ever larger profits to be realized. This was possible due to the very large size of the ore body and its high grade - averaging 2.7% copper from startup through fiscal 1997. The situation has now changed: ore grade is falling rapidly and is projected to be only 1.55% by 2003. Since revenue is directly proportional to ore grade, while costs are proportional to quantity of ore processed, profits will begin to fall dramatically. The Phase IV Expansion Project is intended to forestall this drop in profits by increasing ore processing capacity by over 85%.The Phase IV concentrator is designed for a nominal capacity of 110,000 MTPD and the key to achieving this value is through the proper design of the grinding circuit. This paper presents the general design criteria for the grinding circuit, as well as a description of the facility.INTRODUCTIONThe Phase IV Expansion Project consists of a new copper concentrator located 8.5 km south of the existing operations, a new tailings disposal and water reclaim system, a new concentrate slurry pipeline to the coast, and added concentrate handling capacity at the port of Coloso. The new concentrator has a nominal capacity of 110,000 tonnes per day (MTPD), compared to the existing concentrator’s capacity of 127,500 MTPD. The Laguna Seca concentrator is based on using the largest and most efficient ore grinding mills now available.The concentrator has been designed for a 110,000 MTPD nominal capacity. The process design criteria for the Phase IV project were established from in-house operating information and from test work. Unlike a green field project, Escondida already had an operating plant and it processes ore from the same pit that feeds the Phase IV plant. It is expected that the current mineralization will be similar for the first 6 years of operation of the new project. Therefore, some of the current plant operating conditions were incorporated directly into the design criteria."
