With vehicles frequently found in mines and tires being a major fuel item, the risk of tire fires will be severe underground. This study presents an analysis of tire fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk and mitigating measures, which would improve the fire safety underground. Data from fire experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were applied. It was found that the wheelhouse of a loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of a drilling rig tire was found to be higher than that of a loader tire, increasing the risk of igniting items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for a drilling rig for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of the wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tire geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of a loader resulted in flow behavior, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tire and the separation of flow directly downstream of the construction led to gases being steered past the front mudguard/tire. In a drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tire led to gases being directed toward the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation.

To put coal in its proper perspective as a source of energy for electric power production, we must first compare it to other energy sources. A report of the Atomic Industrial Forum dated February 1958 records a number of authoritative though widely varying predictions. The most optimistic of these states that by 1968 there will be a total U.S. capacity of about 6000 megawatts of nuclear power, if growth continues at the present rate. Other sources indicate over 200,000 megawatts of total electrical capacity in utility plants by 1968. This is only 3% nuclear. Therefore, 97% of our total power production will be from non-nuclear energy. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of energy sources of electric utility product- ion in the U.S. as reported by the Federal Power Commission in 1954. Note that less than one quarter of the total is hydro and about one half of the total is coal. For 1957, the Edison Electric Institute reports that of the total steam- electric generation in the U. S., 68.6% was by coal, 7.9% was by oil and 23.5% was by gas. This is an increase for coal and a decrease for oil and gas in those three years. Thus we can conclude that two-thirds of the steam-electric power in the U. S. is now generated by coal. Fig. 2 shows the major markets for coal for 1947 vs 1957. The greatest in- crease has been in the electric utility market, where it has more than doubled in the ten years. One-third of the total coal produced goes to the utilities which now represent coal?s major market. Utilities used 160 million tons of coal in 1957, and the estimated quantity for 1967 is 275 million tons, and for 1977 is 525 million tons. It is predicted that 85% of steam-electric power will be generated by coal in 1975.

Researchers have long speculated regarding the adsorption state of collectors on mineral surfaces. Only recently have analytical techniques become available which allow direct in-situ analysis of adsorbed layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled with internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IRJIRS) with reactive internal reflection elements allows for unobtrusive investigation of the adsorbed layer (Harrick, 1979). This technique has been used both for the in-situ identification of adsorbed species and for the direct calculation of collector adsorption density in real time from infrared spectral data (Miller and Kellar, 1988). The reactive mineral IRE serves both to internally reflect the infrared light and to act as a substrate at which collector adsorption can be monitored. Shown in Figure 1 is a schematic of light being internally reflected in an IRE. As the light is totally reflected at the interface, an evanescent wave propagates a short distance (typically a few microns) away from the IRE, and sampling of the interfacial region occurs. Because of multiple internal reflections, great sensitivity can be obtained. Flotation systems for which this method has been demonstrated include CaF2/oleate, Al2O3/ dodecyl sulfate, CaCO3/oleate, ZnS/xanthate, and KCl/octylamine (Miller and Kellar, 1988; Kellar et al., 1989, 1990; Miller et al., 1990).

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rock strength. For accurate stability prediction, intact rock behavior is imperatively included in rock mass behavior. However, past research largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rock strength. This paper considers a stochastic approach in order to determine the strength of a rock. Based on the laboratory data, a MATLAB® with extreme value stochastic model generates a database for each physico-mechanical property. Then FLAC® simulates laboratory-sized rock specimens. The grids developed in the numerical model can in turn develop random material properties in MATLAB®, which researchers then applied to the final FLAC® model. Model runs simulate the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produces strengths that are lower than a deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen are different, similar to observations in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influences the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

Sewage sludge contains heavy metals, pathogens and bears annoying characteristics that limit its land application. For the sewage to be applicable on land, several stabilization methods can be used. Stabilization with lime (CaO) is used to raise pH and temperature and therefore, according to ASTM standards, reduce pathogen levels and achieve compliance with regulatory requirements. Although the process results in the production of a stabilized material, its direct application to soils is rather limited mainly due to the improper product texture. Inert materials can be further added to sewage sludge stabilized with lime to tackle this problem. The objective of this study is to investigate the potential use of dried bauxite residues as an inert material together with lime for the stabilization of sewage sludge from a municipal water treatment plant. It was indicated that the addition of bauxite residues and lime to sewage sludge apart from meeting the requirements of ASTM standards, it further reduces moisture content, improves material texture and eliminates odors. It was also found that although some elements leachability increased due to the treatment with lime, it further decreased when bauxite residues were also added.

Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) coals of certain areas of the Illinois and Forest City Basins contain epigenetic sphalerite and associated minerals in veins, clastic dikes, cleat, and other small-scale structural features. The presence of sphalerite in these coals records information about the geology of coals and coal basins, and represents a potential source for zinc as a byproduct of coal production. Origin of Sphalerite in Coal The origin of sphalerite in coal suggested by Cobb (1) involves sphalerite precipitation from zinc-bearing ?Na-Ca-Cl brines upon contact with sources of sulfur in the coal bed, e.g., pyrite, H2S, and organic sulfur. These brines were essentially at the temperature of the host coals as determined by fluid-inclusion thermometry and vitrinite-reflectance studies. The migration of these brines into coal beds may have been caused by compaction of sediments due to continued sediment loading of the coal basins. Zones of high permeability such as sandstones and the coals themselves presumably acted as conduits for the movement of the brines. The open spaces where sphalerite was deposited resulted from minor deformation associated with differential compaction and cleat formation enhanced by volume shrinkage during coalification.

Biological processes for metal solubilization and ore beneficiation are in widespread use today. There are also some promising new applications of biotechnology in the areas of metal concentration and toxic metal cleanup. Recent progress in genetic engineering promises both to revolutionize the existing biological process and to expedite the adoption of the new biological applications. But before it can do so effectively, progress must be made in many areas of fundamental research and in biochemical engineering. These issues are addressed with special reference to the biotechnology of semi-enclosed containers (bioreactors), dumps, heaps, in situ and under- ground leaching, and with respect to the biotechnology of metal concentration. Finally, certain biological considerations for bacterial strain improvement are discussed.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."

The techniques for fire monitoring of conveyor belts in underground coal mines have been revolutionized by the advent of sensitive carbon monoxide sensors and computer monitoring systems. These new systems are rapidly replacing the previous thermal (fixed-point temperature) sensors that have been shown to be considerably less sensitive for early fire warning. CO is generally an excellent indicator of spontaneous combustion. However, the most recent non-flammable conveyor belt materials have been shown to "burn" with dense smoke, but without sufficiently high temperatures to produce much carbon monoxide. To cover this fire detection void, a smoke detector was developed to augment CO sensing for these new conveyor materials. However, computer monitoring provides the flexibility for handling this and other additional instrumentation as fire monitoring techniques evolve. CO, smoke and temperature sensing may eventually be advocated for complete fire monitoring.

Since time immemorial, Mother Nature has been transporting slurries with both air and water serving as the carrier medium. Consider for example the formation of the continental shelves off our coast lines which are being formed by rivers emptying erroded land surface and depositing it into bays and gulfs. As the erosion processes take place, the fines are suspended in water which flows in streams and rivers and deposits where the velocity of the flow reduces sufficiently to allow the fines to settle out. The same process in some crude form is provided when one hoses his driveway or patio and moves dirt so as to provide a cleaning action. These examples illustrate rather crudely how the formation of slurries allows for the transport of solids. In recent years, this mechanism has become fairly well understood and slurry pipelining of many materials is now a vivid reality. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps for the purpose. Those of us who have had some rub with the petroleum industry are familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well the circulating fluid utilized to remove chips which are cut by a drill bit from holes drilled deep in the earth is called drilling mud. This substance contrary to what the name might imply is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics which are desirable in the drilling process. The particles which have been cut by the drill bit are suspended in the moving column of fluid and brought to the surface and deposited. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits. However, it is impractical to remove the fines completely from the drilling fluid and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulatory stream.

Introduction On June 20, 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published revised asbestos exposure standards for general industry and construction. The standards reflect OSHA's attempt to adequately control workplace exposures to minerals it considers carcinogenic - minerals capable of causing or contributing to cancer. These standards specifically identify asbestos as: chrysotile, an asbestiform serpentine mineral; and the amphibole minerals amosite, crocidolite, tremolite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, and anthophyllite asbestos. Each of these has a more common nonasbestos mineral analog that exists in nature in a crystalline, blocky shape rather than the hair-like or fibrous shape of asbestos. The mineralogical names for three of these nonasbestos minerals are unique: antigorite for chrysotile, cummingtonite-grunerite for amosite, and riebeckite for crocidolite. The other three nonasbestos analogs do not have unique mineralogical names. They are simply designated as actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite without the word asbestos following their names. The 1986 OSHA standards not only cover exposure to the six asbestos minerals, they also cover specifically the nonasbestos forms of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite (AT&A). The new standards regulate these minerals exactly like asbestos (OSHA, 1986). The construction aggregate industry views this as a major problem because these nonasbestos minerals are common amphibole rock-forming minerals in the earth's crust. They exist in small quantities over large areas of the United States (Kuryvial et al., 1974). These minerals, unlike asbestos, are not mined for a specific commercial purpose. They are unavoidable components in much of the aggregate used for construction throughout the US. They are also common in the gangue material of metallic ores. There are areas of the US where amphibole-bearing bed¬rock is common. Not every rock mass in these areas contain amphiboles, however. It does mean, though, that amphiboles are physically compatible with many of the rocks in those areas. And given the correct geochemical conditions, they will be present primarily in the nonasbestiform variety. In addition, these amphiboles will probably exist in the natural drainage system, sand and gravel deposits, stream sediments, lake shores, valley basins, or ordinary beach sand within these areas. There has been little quantification of nonasbestiform AT&A in dusts and soils in the US. This is not surprising since these nonasbestiform minerals are not commercially valuable. However, an example of the pervasive nature of these minerals can be found in a 1981 Geological Society of America publication where about 0.7% tremolite-actinolite was found in the desert dust in and around Tempe, AZ (Pewe, 1981). Since OSHA standards treat these common nonasbestos minerals as carcinogens in the same way as asbestos, large natural areas in the US are implicitly being labeled as hazardous by OSHA. When a substance is identified as a carcinogen, another OSHA standard comes into play, the Hazard Communication standard. There are also right-to-know laws in 9 states that essentially duplicate this federal standard. These standards require that a product containing 0.1% or more of an OSHA-designated carcinogen be labeled as such (OSHA, 1983). This means that much of the stone and sand gravel products occurring naturally and mined in the US could be labeled a carcinogen when, in fact, they are not. The National Stone Association (NSA) and the domestic construction and mining industries believe that OSHA has seriously erred. The NSA has studied the health, mineralogical, technical, economic, and legal basis for OSHA's action. These studies concluded that there is no justification for the agency regulating nonasbestos minerals as if they were asbestos. Health issues The preamble to OSHA's 1986 asbestos standard states that evidence for asbestos-like health effects from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A is inconclusive (OSHA, 1986). The fact is, not only are the data inconclusive, they are nonexistent. During 1986-1987, NSA's occupational health and epidemiology consultant, Environmental Health Associates (EHA), reviewed all available health studies related to AT&A. EHA found evidence that malignancies in both experimental animals and humans are associated with the asbestos forms of these minerals. No experimental or epidemiological evidence was found that indicated such pathogenic effects occur from exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of these minerals. There are relatively few scientific studies of the health effects of exposure to nonasbestiform varieties of AT&A. The current processes that aim to purify molybdenite concentrates are not able to dissolve some copper compounds, hence limiting the processes. Typically, the copper content results are from 2 up to 4 weight percent in the last concentrate. Such values are still too high for the molybdenite concentrate to be further processed to molybdenum trioxide by roasting. In order to achieve lower levels of copper — but also avoid excessive molybdenite losses — a continuous sulfation-leaching process is investigated and applied successfully on a pilot scale. Additionally, a reactor prototype and its process parameters are proposed for a commercial plant.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. The problem relating to the use of insoluble anodes in acidic and highly aggressive environments has still not been definitely solved, and it is therefore a recurring subject of discussion. The fields of application in which insoluble anodes play a fundamental role are mainly in the electrolytic extraction of metals, in cathodic protection with impressed current, and in the production of oxidized halogenated salts. Based on the foregoing, B.U.S Engitec Servizi Ambientali (BESA) developed an electrode suitable for the use in the above-mentioned system. The basic component of the BESA anode is a bimetallic wire made of a copper rod (core) covered by a thin layer of valve metal, to be chosen between tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb). The wires, coated with suitable catalyst (PbO2, Pt or others) are inserted in a plastic frame and fixed to a current feeder by means of a screw, ensuring an optimal contact. Experimental data on the operating conditions, such as kind of electrolyte, current density, electrode potential, corrosion tests and fields of possible application, are described.

Motorized Conveyor Pulleys contain all the traditional conveyor belt drive components inside the pulley. Light duty airport check in, grocery stores and food processing conveyors; requiring compactness, elimination of guarding and component containment have been using them for years. Portable Aggregate Processing Equipment require these features but with higher belt pulls and severe duty beyond the capacity of traditional components in a limited space. New materials, design technologies and automation; converging with safety issues, higher energy and operating costs; have created a pressing need. The challenge is to integrate new technologies and traditional components into a reliable, compact, conveyor belt drive system.

Many modern industries rely on rare earth elements (REEs) to produce products that are essential to both civil and defense applications. In a prior study (Vass et al., 2019), we showed that REE grades in acid mine drainage (AMD) and associated byproduct precipitates from AMD treatment (AMDp) warrant evaluation as a feedstock for REE production. The current work extends that effort through a broad survey of 141 AMD treatment sites in Northern and Central Appalachia. In this study, 185 raw AMD and 623 AMDp field samples were obtained and analyzed to assess the REE and major metal concentrations. Results show that an average of 282 μg/L and 724 g/t of REEs occur in AMD and AMDp, respectively. Additionally, both basins contained similar distributions of REEs, and these distributions tended to favor heavy and critical REEs when compared with traditional REE ore deposits.

Stage open stope mining (SOSM) maintains the stability of excavation openings by leaving a large number of rib pillars. Affected by the strong unloading due to stage mining and the low width-to-height (w/h) ratio of the pillars remaining, large-scale destabilization disasters of rib pillars or excavation openings easily occur when the distribution of ground stress or the size of rib pillars is unreasonable. In view of these problems, a physical SOSM model test was carried out based on an underground metal mine in the city of Chifeng in China, revealing the deformation and failure characteristics of the SOSM pillar group by overloading.

New concepts in shaft kiln processing are included in the design of two large diameter shaft kiln plants now under construction. One kiln will be used to produce cement clinker at the Boettcher plant of the Ideal Cement Company at Fort Collins, Colorado. The other kiln is for the semi-commercial oil shale plant for Petrobras, the Brazil National Oil Company at Sao Mateus do Sul, Parana, Brazil. Investigations on application of the new concepts are proceeding in a portable pilot kiln. The shaft kiln has long been recognized as a method of gas-solids contacting having the following principle advantages: l. High thermal efficiency 2.
