Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

The paper summarizes an investigation into the applicability of mechanical excavation to oil shale mining; identifies available machine types that are best suited to various aspects of the mining operation; presents preliminary comments on the configuration of an "IDEAL" oil shale mining machine; and establishes the background information necessary for conceptualizing and evaluating new mining methods using mechanical excavation equipment. Conclusions are also presented as to the best currently available systems, as well as potential future systems.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. A case study is provided that highlights the successful use of high efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) adapted from the oil and gas industry for a large scale, open pit mine dewatering operation. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito Mine, Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit development areas in Zacatecas, Mexico. At the time of publication (July 2012), there were 18 vertical bedrock dewatering wells producing an average flow rate of 350 liters per second (lps) from the Peñasco and Chile Colorado development areas. Average pumping rate per well was 18 lps, with a maximum of 44 lps. The depth of wells varies from 330 m to 500m, and includes both in-pit and perimeter (ex-pit) pumping centers. A network of 50 piezometers was used to monitor the response of groundwater levels to pumping. Since dewatering operations were initiated in 2007, groundwater elevations decreased overall, from approximately 1950 m above sea level (masl) to around 1625 masl, for a total of 340 m of drawdown. The pit floor elevation was approximately 1655 masl. All of the producing wells were constructed with 16-inch boreholes, completed with 10-inch diameter blank casing and louvered screen sections and equipped with ESPs. The application of ESPs has proven to be highly effective in the case of Peñasquito?s dewatering operations. Noted advantages include the following: ? Small diameter pump allows use of smaller diameter boreholes (16 inches) and casing / screens (10 inches) reducing well drilling and construction costs ? Greater application range for flow rate and total dynamic head ? Variable speed drive systems for greater energy efficiency and flow rate optimization ? Integration of downhole instrumentation into the motor and pump assembly The advantages and benefits of using high efficiency ESPs revolutionized the dewatering program at Peñasquito open pit mine as evidenced by the number of deep vertical well installations and high dewatering flow rates and total dynamic head requirements.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

This paper presents a virtual prototype for the stress analysis of cable shovel components based on combination of flexible and rigid body approach. The general mechanical system of the cable shovel is modeled as a multi-body system with rigid and flexible bodies. The relevant theories applied for the dynamic model are described in terms of Lagrangian multi-body dynamics and finite element method. A virtual prototype of the cable shovel is built in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System (ADAMS) environment, which allows visualizing the motion of general mechanical system and analyzing the dynamic stress of structural components of the cable shovel. An example is given to perform dynamic stress of durability analysis for the boom and handle. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the cable shovel and also the critical high stress areas. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. The electrical conductivity of rutile was optimised as a function of time, temperature and gas composition. These optimised conditions were used to treat rutile/zircon feed prep concentrate samples from a South African heavy minerals producer, prior to electrostatic separation. Enhanced separation between rutile and zircon was obtained when compared to untreated samples. Samples treated in a hydrogen atmosphere and cooled in nitrogen showed the best separation when passed through a high tension electrostatic separator using conditions of high sample temperature and high relative humidity.

Construction of Ontario Power Generation?s 12.8-m diameter, 10.4-km long water diversion tunnel in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is underway. The tunnel is being excavated by means of a 14.44-m diameter open gripper Tunnel Boring Machine. The tunnel lining is constructed as a two-pass system with the initial lining consisting of rock bolts, mesh, steel channels or ribs, and shotcrete, and the final lining consisting of pre-stressed cast-in-place concrete with a waterproof membrane. Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

Limestone-based material is effective for reducing arsenic concentrations below the current limit of 10 parts per billion for drinking water, typically resulting in final concentrations of about 4 to 6 ppb. However, in laboratory and field testing, further reductions to the 1 ppb range are difficult to achieve with limestone unless other material such as iron is added. The removal mechanism with untreated limestone appears to be the formation of a low-solubility precipitate of hydrated calcium arsenate, in the form of arsenate-apatite. Likely reactions and thermodynamic data indicate a theoretical removal limit of about 2 to 4 ppb for arsenic using raw limestone. Limestone also can reduce concentrations of cadmium and lead below 1 ppb in water, resulting in >99% removal efficiency. Thermodynamic constraints appear to be favorable for reactions involving the formation of otavite during cadmium removal and the formation of hydrocerussite during lead removal.

I would like to share some observations about the mining business and place the ongoing discussion in the context of our changed world. The mining industry practices its trade in a universe defined by prices, laws and governments. Prices, as in what the industry is paid for what it produces, and the costs of goods and services. Laws that have to be transparent and fair. And governments that the industry prefers to be stable and supportive of the industry, and certainly not corrupt. However, the day-to-day realities of the mining business in 2000 are not what they were 10 years ago. Several events have occurred that have resulted in a less populated workplace that is obliged to work much smarter and faster. These include real declining prices for most mineral commodities; low and diminishing returns to company shareholders; massive restructuring of the industry through mergers, partnerships and alliances; gold’s changed role from reserve currency to just another commodity; the growing importance of native title and the startling imperatives of “sustainable development.” In addition, the “borderless world” now means that resource companies will need to pass the test of being responsible corporate guests who respect and enhance the social, moral and societal values of their host countries.

Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

The Main Zone and Waterline pit lakes at the Equity Silver Mine near Houston, BC (Canada) are the sites of a new 3-yr research program with three primary goals: 1) understanding controls on metal concentrations in the lakes; 2) using mesocosms to test a variety of remediation strategies; and 3) verifying and improving an existing coupled physical-geochemical model with the goal of improving predictions of pit lake water quality. Initial data from two summer surveys in the Main Zone pit lake reveal elevated dissolved metal concentrations (e.g. [Zn] as high as 800 µg/L) present in a two-meter-deep mixed layer, and elevated particulate metal concentrations towards the bottom of the water column. Hydroxide sludge, a byproduct of ARD treatment, is being discharged to the surface waters of the Main Zone pit lake. The sludge sinks rapidly to the lake bottom, leading to deep waters with elevated levels of dissolved O2 and total metals. By contrast, the deep waters of the proximal Waterline pit lake are mildly reducing, manifested by depletion of O2 and elevated levels of dissolved Fe. These reducing conditions have led to elevated levels of As (up to 1500 µg/L) in Waterline pit deep waters. The contrasting behavior of these two pit lakes, as well as the processes controlling metal concentrations in the lakes, will be discussed.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.
