It is shown that the profiles of beaches of hydraulic-fill tailings dams can be predicted with good accuracy the use of small-scale laboratory deposition tests on materials from a prototype tailings dam. Although the slope of a tailings beach at any point is related to the shear strength of the settled slurry, are severe practical difficulties in the prediction of beach profiles from shear strengths measured in the laboratory. The hydraulic sorting of particle sizes that occurs on a tailings beach results in a gradient of permeability the beach, and this gradient has the significant effect of lowering the phreatic surface in the tailings dam.

A colloquium on solid-liquid separation was held by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 23rd September, 1982, at the State Pavilion Auditorium, Milner Park, Johannesburg, to co-incide with the Electra Mining Exhibition. It was attended by about 150 delegates. Eight papers were presented covering: Geostatistics The School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University, the Centre de Geostatistique ofthe Paris School of Mines, and the Department de Genie Mineral of the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal are cosponsoring the organization of a 2nd NATO ASI (North Atlantic Treaty Organization Advanced Study Institute), under the name of 'GEOSTAT TAHOE 1983', to be held at South Lake Tahoe, California, on 4th to 17th September, 1983.

This paper reports the results of a literature review carried out on nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels and their properties. It was found that a large volume of work has been carried out on the subject, particularly with regard to the more common stainless steels such as types 304 and 316. No work appears to have been conducted on the highly alloyed steels such as type 310S. Nitrogen has been found to increase the stability of the austenite in stainless steels and to impart significant improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of these alloys. Importantly, nitrogen appears to increase both the ductility and the strength of austenitic stainless steels over a wide range of temperatures.

The environmentally acceptable disposal of fine-particled mining and industrial wastes by the formation of hydraulic- fill slimes dams is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the total mining endeavour. Relatively little is known of the behaviour of waste slurries during deposition. This paper describes and analyses the following aspects of slurry behaviour: (i) the relationship between viscosity, shear strength, and water content, (ii) the slope assumed by a thickened slurry, (iii) particle-size sorting on a hydraulicfill beach, (iv) gradients of hydraulic-fill beaches, and (v) internal erosion during the deposition of slurry. v083n04p073.pdf

Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust, and in its purest form has a tin content of 78,6 per cent. South Africa has limited deposits of the mineral, and by its exploitation contributes about 2 per cent of the world's production. This paper gives a brief history of tin mining in South Africa, which dates back almost 3000 years. Over the intervening years, many tin-mining operations have flourished and as quickly disappeared. At present there are only three tin mines in operation, and a description is given of the methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting that are used. The properties and uses of tin are listed, together with relevant statistics.

This paper details the preliminary design work carried out before and during the implementation of an extensive backfilling programme on Cooke 3 Shaft, Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited. The design work is of relevance to any system utilizing a cementitious binder, and the quality control aspects are of particular significance. Problems associated with correlating laboratory results to actual field results are also briefly discussed.

On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes each of the stages in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant, and details the steps that can be taken to achieve effective carbon management by referring to practices at the Daggafontein CIP plant. This approach was adopted because of the difficulty in summarizing current carbon management in the many varying operations in South Africa, Daggafontein being chosen as a high-tonnage dedicated well-run plant of recent design. Because of the major role played by the consumption of carbon in the operating costs of CIP and CIL plants, an attempt is made to develop a series of indexes based on quality parameters and price that can be used as a guide In the selection of carbon.

Postage and packing, 3s. 6d. This volume should be of interest to economic geologists and students in this field. A number of illustrated papers on the genesis of ores in sediments are presented; the authors include experts such as Prof G. C. Amstutz, Dr K. C. Dunham, Prof D. Williams and W. G. GarIick. The papers deal mainly with sulphide deposits, but the late Prof J. H. Taylor's contribution concerns ores of iron and manganese. Brief references to the Witwatersrand ores represent the only discussion of South African deposits. With the notable exception of W. G. Garlick's paper on Zambian copper deposits, the Abstracts given are inadequate, necessitating thorough reading of the papers to extract the important matter.

The mechanism of gold adsorption on activated charcoal by R. J. DAVIDSON: M.Se., Ph.D. (Rhodes) (Visitor) The adsorption of gold onto activated charcoal is most dependent on the concentration and character of the 'spectator' cations present in the adsorption medium. In the presence of calcium ions, gold is adsorbed as the calcium aurocyanide complex. The degree to which the aurocyanide complexes are adsorbed follows the series Ca> Mt:> H> Li> Na> K, calcium aurocyanide being the most stable complex and potassium aurocyanide the least firmly bound. If a loaded charcoal, where the gold is present as the calcium complex, is treated initially with either sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate solutions, the gold can subsequently be eluted from the charcoal with hot deionized water as either the sodium or the potassium complex respectively. The elution of gold with deionized water appears to be most attractive practically and economically, and has several potential applications in the recovery of gold from dilute solutions.

The objective of ergonomics is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which human tasks are carried out. Furthermore, the objective is to improve desirable human values. This can be achieved by enhancing safety, reducing fatigue and stress, increasing comfort, increasing job satisfaction, having greater user acceptance and thereby improving the quality of life. Mechanization has influenced the prevalence of injury, mainly due to the application of human physical effort as the power source. With mechanization, the operator’s function is now essentially one of control rather than being an energy source, however the risk of injury has not diminished. Mechanization in itself has introduced inefficiencies, health risks and physiological stress. The major objectives of ergonomics are discussed through examples of acceptable and less successful implementation of ergonomics within mechanized mining. The influence of the machine system on the human is addressed and practical solutions to improve and optimize the interaction of the human and the machine are outlined. Furthermore, practical examples of control and display integration, anthropometric and biomechanic influences on design, orientation, posture and stereotypes are used to accentuate the advantages of the application of sound ergonomics principles to the specialised area of mechanized mining.

Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). The dynamics of the ball load within a wet-grinding mil are examined, using measurements of torque and load position, The test equipment provided an accurate torque measurement, and the toe and shoulder positions of the load were measured by the use of a conductivity probe mounted in the mill shell. Both the variables tested-mil filing and rotational speed-influence the position of the load, and hence the torque, and have interactive effects on both the torque and the load position, An increase in mil speed and filing causes the torque to increase to a maximum value, after which further increases in speed or filing cause the torque to decrease. The position of the load toe is influenced only by the filing up to speeds of approximately 80 per cent of critical, whereas the speed and filing both cause the load shoulder to rise as their magnitudes are increased, The power drawn by the mill is predicted by the use of published equations, and these values are compared with the measured power draw.

The techniques used in this study of the non-oxidative dissolution rates of high- and Iow-grade nickel mattes in hydrochloric acid involved leaching and the use of a rotating ring-disc electrode. It was found that the rate of metal dissolution depends on the potential at which the matte dissolves, a maximum rate of dissolution being observed at -0,2 V to 0,3 V (relative to a saturated calomel electrode). The results are comparable with those obtained in work on the dissolution of synthetic nickel and iron sulphides. The adverse effect of excess sulphur on the rate of nonoxidative dissolution is explained in terms of the mixed potential of the reaction. The leaching studies showed the feasibility of processing a high-grade nickel matte by non-oxidative dissolution, and indicate that maximum rates can be obtained in the presence of fairly Iow concentrations of oxidant. A relative selective dissolution of iron can be obtained from the Iow-grade matte under reducing conditions, thus resulting in a significant upgrading of this material. During the course of 2011 the nationalization of mines emerged as one of the most contentious and emotive political issues under review. Some four years after the African National Congress electoral conference held in Polokwane, which had led to a change of leadership within the country's ruling party, elements within the ruling party's youth league, which had been virulently supportive of the change in leadership, turned on the incumbent President, using the mining question as its rallying call. At issue was the expressed perception that mining has, since the country's democratization, not delivered the anticipated benefits to the population as a whole, continues to be the preserve of the capitalist element of the South African community, and is therefore in need of radical reform. Aspersions were made that transformation within the industry had failed dismally and that mining companies had not delivered against their commitments to the Mining Charter and social and labour plans. The debate became extremely vocal and heated, evoked dramatic and emotive opinions, and vigorous skirmishes on the matter were fought in the media over much of 2011 and into 2012.

ABSTRACT: In the south of the Island of Gran Canaria (Spain) there appear layers of swelling clays inside volcanic formations of a fonolitic type, down to depths as low as 500 m, with thicknesses of 1 to 3 m. Two tunnels (each of length 1,500 m) have been built in these zones (ignimbrites and swelling clays), work on which started in the ‘70s. The construction has been influenced by phenomena of expansivity and decompression. Presented below are the problems that arose, the field and indoor studies conducted and the numerical optimisation of the lining. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Süden der Insel Gran Canaria (Spanien) kommen im Inneren vulkanischer Formationen phonolithischen Typs in Tiefen von bis zu 500 Metern 1 bis 3 Meter dicke Blähtonschichten vor. In diesem Gelände aus Schmelztuff und Blähton begann man zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre, zwei Tunnel von jeweils 1.500 Metern Länge anzulegen. Die Bauarbeiten standen unter dem Einfluss von Dehnungs- und Dekompressionserscheinungen. Der folgende Text enthält eine Darstellung der aufgetretenen Probleme, der durchgeführten Feld- und Laborstudien und der numerischen Optimierung der Tunnelauskleidung. RESUME: Dans le sud de l’Ille du Gran Canaria (Espagne) on a détecté des couches d’argile gonflante dans l’intérieur des formations de roches volcaniques fonolitiques, à la profondeur autom des 500 m, avec épaisseur de 1 à 3 m. On a perforé deux tunnels (de longueur 1.500 m chaque un) dans cettes zones (igniumbrités et argiles gonflantes), chantier qui comenza pendant les 70’. La construction on a influencé pour des phénomènes d’expansivité et de décompression. Dans cette communication on présente les problèmes presentes, les études de chantier et théoriques realicés et l’optimisation numérique développé pour dimensionner le revêtement.
