The complexity of modem open pit load-haul-dump systems is described, and the need for realistic working models is pointed out. Both standard and probabilistic simulation procedures are discussed, probabilistic simulation being indicated as the more powerful and practical technique. Acquisition of the necessary pit operating data required for simulator construction and general modelling procedures are described. Finally, results from a typical open pit simulator are used to indicate the scope of the technique.

"Government’s equity role in the minerals sector is one of the nationalist measures implemented in order to ensure greater control and management of a country’s mineral resources. This paper evaluates the Tanzanian government’s equity participation in the minerals sector from 1996 to 2015. The research methodology included determination of the number of mineral rights, minimum allowable exploration expenditures in prospecting licences (PLs), and forms of equity role of the government. Data was collected and analysed for PLs, mining licences (MLs), and special mining licences (SMLs).The study revealed a number of challenges faced by the Tanzanian government as regards its equity strategy in the mineral sector. One of the major challenges was the secrecy surrounding agreements and contracts entered into between the government and private sector investors, which were concluded via various business ownership and mineral development projects. This secrecy resulted in non-transparency and lack ofaccountability in the mining industry.The financial benefits accruing to the government were inadequately realized, evident through inconsistent payments of corporate income tax and mining royalties by the mining companies. Furthermore, the government does not have solid mechanisms and frameworks for assessing non-financial benefits, thus it is difficult to measure the impact of these factors.It is recommended that the Tanzanian government review the Mining Act and Regulations of 2010 to include the provision of solid mechanisms and frameworks for all forms of government equity role.This paper is based on an MSc research study undertaken at the University of the Witwatersrand.IntroductionGovernments can grant private companies mining rights to extract mineral resources, or take a stake in the companies as well as establish state companies to oversee their interests in the minerals sector. The establishment of a state company to oversee government interests in the mining sector implies the direct participation of government by way of equity participation. Equity participation or role is defined as the holding of shares in an enterprise, company, or asset by individuals or a body corporate (Otto, n.d.; Brown, 2013; Natural Resource Governance Institute, 2015)."

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

This investigation compares the gas adsorption behaviour and capacity of three bituminous coals from South Africa, of similar rank, by assessing the characteristics of the raw coal, as well as the resulting float and sink fractions (at 1.80 cm3/g) obtained by density separation of crushed coal samples. Calculations were also made to obtain the raw coal gas storage capacity from the weighted contribution of both float and sink fractions results, thereby permitting comparison with the analysed results of the raw coal. The study demonstrated that the clean fraction of a coal has the highest capacity to retain gas in the sorbed state, followed by raw coal, and lastly the sink fraction, and re?confirmed previous investigations that showed minerals to be inhibitors of gas adsorption and retention.

The ?Poisson effect? is defined and characterized. It takes place even when the material to sample is not liberated. Gy, Pitard, Ingamells, and others, including the author, recommend that a minimum average number of particles of mineral of interest characterize the recommended sample size. How many? Recommended numbers range from 6 to 40 particles depending on authors, corresponding to standard deviations of 41% to 16%. Some guidelines are proposed, and the often alleged ?double-Poisson? effect is examined.

Wet end components of centrifugal slurry pumps used in the hydraulic transport of solids are subject to substantial erosive wear. Accurate prediction of the casing wear rate and location for a particular duty is beneficial for correct pump selection and design, maintenance planning, and elimination of emergency shutdowns. CFD multiphase simulation using the Eulerian-Eulerian approach is being applied successfully to determine the velocity fields and solids concentration in the centrifugal pump, allowing for accurate predictions of casing wear patterns resulting from sliding abrasive wear. Simulation results for various single domain and multi-domain (multistage) multiphase simulations are discussed. Emphasis is placed on results from a 3-dimensional, multi-stage transient, multiphase simulation and comparison to field data.

ABSTRACT. A retrospective analysis of some geomechanical classifications for rock masses is presented. It is shown that estimates of rock mass strength according to geomechanical classifications developed, e.g., for construction of tunnels and for ore mines can differ very much. Development of specifically oriented classifications for rock masses with certain geomechanical properties is required. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse einiger geomechanoschen Klassifikationen von Gesteinsmassiven durchgefuhrt. Es idt aufgezeigt worden, dass die Bes-timmung der Festigkeit des Massivs nach geomechanischen Klassifikationen, die z.B. fur den Bau von Tunnelen und fur Erzbergwerke entwickelt wurden, sich um etliche Male unterscheiden kann. Es ist eine Entwicklung von spezialisierten Klassifikationen fur Gesteinsmassive mit bestimmten geomechanischen Eigenschaften erforderlich. RESUME. Il a ete fait l’analyse retrospective de certaines classifications geomecaniques des massifs de roche. Il a ete montre que les estimations de solidite du massif suivant les classifications geomecaniques etudiees, par exemple, pour la construction des tunnels et pour les puits de minerai peuvent differer en quelques fois. Il est donc necessaire d’etudier les classifications specialisees pour les massifs aux proprietes geomecaniques particulieres.

The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single-electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions?this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magnetohydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

Activated carbons used in the precious metals extraction industry are characterized by large internal surface areas and a great affinity for metal ions. The purpose of this research is to prepare activated carbon from a South African bituminous coal by physical activation that is suitable and cost-effective for use in the extraction of metals. The quality of the coal-based activated carbon may not prove to be as good as activated carbon produced from other traditional sources, but the production costs involved may make South African coal a feasible alternative feedstock. The activated carbons produced were characterized by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface area, activated carbon pH, and phenol adsorption studies and the results compared to the results from a commercially available activated carbon, Norit RO 0.8 (control sample). Bituminous coals from various sources including Witbank Seam 4 and Free State coal were used in this study. The preparation method chosen was physical activation using superheated steam. The effects of process variables such as activation time (1-3 h) and temperature (600-800°C) were studied in order to optimize those parameters. The activated carbon surface area was characterized by means of nitrogen adsorption isotherms at 77K. BET surface area analysis showed that Witbank Seam 4 coal activated at a temperature of 800°C and activation time of 3 hours resulted in a surface area of 340 m2/g. Quality control of each sample was performed by measuring the pH of a known amount of the prepared activated carbon in distilled water over time. Results showed that the pH of some of the prepared activated carbons reached a value of 11. Phenol adsorption results for the different activated carbons prepared corresponded well to the results obtained for the Norit RO 0.8 activated carbon sample.

KingIn presenting his paper Dr W. J. Whiten outlined the basic concepts on which the control model was based and emphasized the fact that empirical models based as much as possible on theory were used to simulate each unit of the crushing plant. The final parameters of each model were computed using data collected from the plant. Unfortunately, the system did not permit accurate extrapolation but was successful when operating in the region from which the parameters were calculated.He concluded from the results of the test work that the crusher amperage was a critical parameter and that the utilization of the model gave a 15 per cent increase in the plant output. This was because the model predicted that a marginally fine grind would provide a significant increase in throughput. Dr Whiten elaborated on what constituted the multiple spline regression, explaining that it was a least-squares curve-fitting technique in one or more dimensions, where the calculation of coefficients in analytic expressions was replaced by the calculation of typical points on a very smooth curve called a spline function. The emphasis was placed on the shape and value of the curve or curves instead of on the coefficients as in analytic regression. A spline function was the line drawn between all points constituting the data set.Dr B. K. Loveday commented that the simulation was unusual in that the optimum throughput was considered to be the maximum throughput, which, surely, was limited by the crusher size. He also emphasized the importance of the interaction between both crushing and grinding circuits and added that in practice the optimum operating conditions were inter-dependent. Dr Whiten replied that in the case of the plant under consideration, the crushing process was not, in fact, the limiting operation.Mr C. E. Clifford indicated that the model was being used to simulate a number of crushing and grinding circuits at Mount Isa Mines. He reported that the model simulated the circuit satisfactorily for primary and secondary gap settings of 0,625 in. to 0,375 in., but that adjustment had to be made to the model parameters for gap settings of 0,250 in. to 0,125 in.In reply to a question from Dr D. M. Hawkins, Dr Whiten said that he preferred to use low-order splines with smaller segments rather than high-order spline functions with large segments."

Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. The conference was attended by traditional leaders in the North-West Province, officials from the Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, and executives from the mining industry. The presentation concerned traditional governance in mining, communities? rights in terms of applicable legislation, and the corporatization of community affairs.

Commissioning of the Cannington processing plant began in October 1997. The nameplate capacity (of 1.55 million tonnes of ore per annum) was achieved relatively quickly. Since then (like many mines) the operation has strived to increase throughput and improve valuable metal recoveries, to offset declining head grades and lift the value of the operation. The processing plant now has the capability of treating over 3.2 million tonnes of ore per annum and in financial year 2005/06 the combined concentrate production exceeded 600 000 wet tonnes, approximately 80 per cent above concentrate output in the first full year of operation (at the design feed rate). This improved performance was achieved by making changes and additions to each of the major unit processes - primary grinding, flotation, leaching, filtering and paste fill preparation. The changes have included: adding a fines flotation circuit, expanding the grinding circuit, adding a pebble crusher, switching from continuous to batch leaching, building paste conveyors and decommissioning the column flotation cleaning circuits. This paper reviews these changes, outlines the current operating practices and discusses the challenges or opportunities that remain.

Global trends stipulate the need to optimize existing assets while reducing environmental impacts. This paper illustrates the procedure that was followed to achieve such goals at one of the coal burning flash dryer units at an Anglo American smelter. An in-depth study of the process and related literature led to the development and installation of a revised control philosophy. This system includes modifications to the existing regulatory control structure as well as a hybrid rule-based and model-predictive advanced process control (APC) layer. Since commissioning of the APC, this flash dryer?s average throughput has increased by more than 6%, despite higher feed moistures. Furthermore, even though coal consumption has increased slightly, operating efficiency has improved by close to 5%. This was made possible by improving stability of the drying column outlet temperature by approximately 40%, which in turn enabled selection of a more optimal setpoint. Recent data has shown that APC utilization now exceeds 95%. This is indicative of a successful controller installation with good site acceptance. The same philosophy has therefore since been rolled out to most of the other flash dryers in the group.

The objective of the study was to estimate the largest shear displacement that could be expected on a pre-existing fracture located in the repository area, due to the heat release from deposited waste. Two-dimensional numerical analyses using UDEC have been performed. The maximum shear displacement, at the fracture centre, amounts to 0.2 – 13.8 cm depending on fracture parameters. The fracture extension, friction angle and shear stiffness are found to be the most important. Le but de cette étude est de déterminer le déplacement maximal en cisaillement qui puisse se développer le long d'une fracture préexistante en réaction à la chaleur dégagée par les déchets radioactifs enfouis dans la roche. Les analyses numériques ont été réalisées à l'aide du code 2D UDEC. Le déplacement maximal en cisaillement enregistré au centre de la fracture varie entre 0.2 et 13.8 cm en fonction des propriétés de la fracture. L'ouverture, l'angle de friction et la rigidité au cisaillement semblent avoir une influence dominante sur les résultats. Zielsetzung der Studie war die Abschätzung der maximalen Scherverschiebung, die auf einer innerhalb des Endlagergebietes existierenden Rissfläche infolge der Wärmeabstrahlung des eingelagerten Materials zu erwarten war. Es wurden zwei-dimensionale numerische Berechnungen mit UDEC durchgeführt. Die maximale Scherverschiebung im Zentrum der Rissfläche beträgt 0.2-13.8 cm, abhängig von den Risseigenschaften. Dabei hat sich herausgestellt, dass Rissgrösse,Reibungswinkel und Schersteifigkeit den grössten Einfluss haben.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

The wide range of applications that can be addressed through the use of this technology is highlighted, and some discussion of the major facts of this project, which is still in its early stages, is provided.
