"Difficulties in the flotation of Inca's ultramafic ores at the Thompson Mill are related to the presence of serpentine slimes and some floatable rock minerals. Serpentine slime coatings depress pentlandite recovery while rock flotation decreases concentrate grade. Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMG) has been shown to promote sulphide flotation and to reject floatable rock.To improve ultramafic ore flotation, CMC addition in the rougher stage was studied in a laboratory scale column. Batch tests were conducted in the lab and followed up with continuous testwork at the Thompson mill. At 0.5-1.0 g CMG per kg ore, pentlandite recovery is increased by 5-10% in rougher flotation, pentlandite/rock selectivity is improved and pentlandite/pyrrhotite selectivity is unaffected.IntroductionAt Inca's Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson Mill, primarily by froth flotation. The sulfide ores are contained within the Thompson Nickel Belt and currently there are two operating mines, Thompson and Birchtree. Sulphide mineralization in both mines is simple, consisting of pyrrhotite (both monoclinic and hexagonal), pentlandite, and minor chalcopyrite. Both deposits are hosted by metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks with variable ultramafic rock associations. Ultramafic rocks are mostly serpentinites: magnesium rich rocks composed predominately of serpentine. There is little serpentinite at the Thompson mine, while mineralization at Birchtree is closely associated with significant ultramafic rocks.Excellent recoveries of pentlandite (Pn) and chalcopyrite (Cp) are achieved at the Thompson Mill when processing ore from the Thompson mine. In treating the ultramafic associated Birchtree ore, nickel recoveries are some 6 to 8% below that achieved with Thompson ore. Furthermore, a typical concentrate from Birchtree ore contains more rock and is higher in MgO content. The presence of rock in the concentrate is related to free floatable rock species as well as rock locked with sulfides. The reason for the difference in flotation responses of these two ores has been the subject of on-going re-search."

"The development and industrial applications of magnetic liners have been around for decades. A Swedish company Skega first introduced rubber magnetic liners, and then followed by the Chinese invention of metal magnetic liners. Traditionally, both liners were used in secondary ball mills and regrind ball mills for industrial applications, especially for ores containing magnetic materials. Mostly steel balls or equivalent forged steel balls, usually below 60 mm in diameter, were used as grinding media. With the development of mineral resources over the years, SAG mills and larger ball mills have become the dominating components for comminution circuit design. Due to the development of larger diameter ball mills and thus larger ball charge diameter (up to 80mm) especially in non-ferrous metal mining operations, the application of magnetic liners have been very limited. Based on “Magnetism theory” and the development of new materials, the HMR Group Limited has been conducting researches on examining the structures of magnetic liners, associated materials and magnetic circuits which led to the invention of the Nano Alloy Steel Magnetic Liner (NSML). Recently, NSML had a successful application in a 5.5 m diameter × 6.5 m ball mill at the Erdenet Copper Mine in Mongolia. The NSML successfully handled a ball size up of to 80 mm, while achieving a service life of nearly 24 months, which is almost 3 times wear life of the original manganese steel liners.INTRODUCTIONDuring the development and utilization of mineral resources, mineral processing is an indispensably operation. The effective separation of various useful minerals depends on sufficient monomer dissociation of minerals in the ores. The crushing and grinding operation is prior operation of mineral processing. Ball mills are used in different concentrators. As the main consumption parts of mill, liners have been studied constantly. As a new kind of liners, magnetic liners besides can meet the requirement of production, and also have characteristics with maintenance-free, saving energy and increasing efficiency. So the magnetic liners are worth to be spread and applied world widely."

"The 1980sfor the mining industry can be characterized as the survival of the fittest. High interest rates, low commodity prices, foreign subsidized competition and decreasing ore grades have contributed to a streamlining of the domestic mining industry in the United States, leading to the shutdown of operations or large cutback of work forces. The purpose of this paper is to look at the impact of a layoff on the employees of what was once a major uranium producer in south central Wyoming, twenty months after the final layoff and mine shutdown. INTRODUCTIONDecember 19, 1985, was the date of the final of three successive layoffs over a two-month period, leading to the complete shutdown of Petrotomics Company, a subsidiary of Getty Minerals Company. The final shutdown was due to a combination of depressed U3O8 prices and the takeover of Getty Oil Company by Texaco in January 1984.The layoffs affected 104 employees and included mine personnel, mill personnel and staff. Both hourly and salary workers were involved. The operation was considered non-union, however, a few mill hourly employees were unionized. At the completion of the layoffs. only a handful of employees remained for administrative and miscellaneous functions.For Getty employees, the terms of the merger agreement provided a generous level of separation benefits. The terms that were insisted upon by Mr. Petersen, Chairman of the Board for Getty Oil, stipulated that employees receive one month of severance pay, for each full calendar year of employment up to a maximum of two year's pay. This was the forerunner of what is now commonly known as the ""tin parachute”. All but the union employees of Petrotomics received these separation benefits. Union employees were covered by their separate, less generous, contract.Much of the literature that has been published in recent months has centred around the effects of layoffs on remaining employees, or the psychological effects on the severed employee. This study will emphasize the economic impact and ramifications due to a layoff, using the Petrotomics employees as a case example."

To obtain sufficient material on which to perform copper-molybdenum separation testwork a variability set of drill hole reject samples amounting to several tons was put together to include the different ore types proportions expected in the copper circuit. The samples were treated in a copper circuit pilot plant and enough mass of bulk concentrate was recovered to conduct copper moly separation tests in the laboratory. Tests consisted of stage flotation reactor (SFR) rougher pilot plant tests, conventional laboratory rougher, cleaner and 4 stage open circuit cleaner tests. The mineralogical liberation analysis of the feed and concentrate was used to model the effect of liberation on the grade-recovery relationship of the different samples. Mineral kinetic parameters for the various samples were determined by calibration to the test data. The copper concentrate results as simulated from previous studies on the same deposit were used to simulate the variability in head grade and throughput expected for the feed to the copper molybdenum separation circuit for each of the first 10 years of production. This variation in feed was then simulated through the separation circuit to obtain optimised molybdenum grade recovery curves to forecast the circuit production for each of the first 10 years. INTRODUCTION Incorporating Geometallurgy into the design for a copper molybdenum separation is especially challenging due to the low mass of final concentrate typically produced during testwork. This is due to the low molybdenum head grades and high overall molybdenum upgrading expected. With molybdenum head grades of around 300 ppm, 1 tonne of copper circuit feed is expected to produce around 300 g of molybdenum concentrate in the plant. In the laboratory however, this may end up only resulting in a few grams. Obtaining sufficient mass for laboratory testing therefore requires starting with a large initial sample and careful testwork planning to maximise the utilisation of this mass. A testwork program was designed to investigate the effect of ore variability on the copper molybdenum separation circuit (here after referred to as the molybdenum circuit). Composite samples were selected to represent the various ore types, copper content, moly content, pyrite content and clay contents expected in the copper circuit feed. These samples were run through a bulk copper pilot plant to create the feed for the molybdenum testwork. The molybdenum testwork consisted of rougher kinetic flotation tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests with regrind, stage flotation reactor (SFR) pilot plant tests, open circuit cleaner tests. These tests were used to calibrate the ore kinetics in the IGS-FLEET model for simulation of the molybdenum circuit performance.

Kaolin clay is heavily used in the paper industry as a coating and a filler, however to attend the specifications required by the industry it has to be processed. Kaolin is also used as a filler and pigment in various materials, such as paint, plastic, rubber etc. Some crude kaolins as mined in Northern Brazil, contain colored impurities such as iron oxide and rutile/anatase. These minerals normally are stained by iron and as a result vary from yellow to dark brown in color. The kaolin beneficiation process used in that region consists mainly of degritting, fractionation by centrifuge, high gradient magnetic separation, bleaching with sodium dithionite, filtering and drying. In some kaolin clays from that region, titanium oxide mineral occurs in fine fraction, lower than 2 µm, and so making the industrial process more difficult. The conventional method of classification and bleaching with sodium dithionite, markedly improves kaolin brightness, but has little effect on anatase removal. In fact, the fine fractions resulting from centrifugation, in many cases contain more TiO2 minerals than the original whole clay or the coarse fraction. The present work is related to purification of Brasilian kaolin clay using selective flocculation for removing its colored impurities such as rutile and anatase. This study was conducted in bench scale and it consisted of: blunging, screening, conditioning and decantation. Overflow and underflow resulting from settling of the flocculated material were then dried and submitted to TiO2 and brightness analyses. Sodium polyacrylate and sodium silicate were added to kaolin clay suspension as dispersant and ammonium hydroxide was also added to adjust pH. After degritting, the minus 44 µm fraction was conditioned with hydroxamate surfactant and then polymers of different anionic charge were added. The influence of pH and type of polymer on efficiency of TiO2 removal, as well as kaolin mass recovery were studied. The results obtained in the present study are quite promising. It was possible to diminish TiO2 content and increase kaolin brightness (ISO) from 82 to 88%.

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."

ABSTRACT: This paper presents two new options for hydrocyclone control. Volume split control using a control valve in the overflow is applied for the stabilization of separation results at changing feed conditions. Controlled water injection to the conical part of the cyclone leads to the reduction of fine particles in the underflow. Hydrocyclone monitoring in both cases is performed by optical sensors that indicate the spray angle of the underflow. Applications in mineral processing for desliming, classification in closed-circuit grinding, and dewatering are demonstrated.

Slot raises are relief holes within a stope in longhole stoping methods, designed to provide a free face that facilitates the expansion of the blasted rock during blasting, ultimately achieving the desired fragmentation. Various methods are employed to produce these slot raises, like conventional drop raise drilling, raisebore & V30 drilling. However, slot drilling is generally characterized by high costs and limitations in precision, resulting in unplanned ore losses and dilution. This paper introduces a novel alternative to slot drilling referred to as the "paste slot", designed specifically for paste backfill operations in underground mining. This new method emphasizes considerations in cured paste strength, paste wall removal, and stope dimensions and employs modified drop raises or dumped rings to optimize blast gas effectiveness and material flow. The paste slot method eliminates the need for reamers and reduces the total slot drill meters an average from 650m to only 300m for narrow stopes (3-4m wide). This significantly reduces the stope cycle time, leading to substantial cost savings and increased productivity. This new method was successfully implemented at the underground mines in Canada and Australia, resulting in a 20% reduction in stope cycle time and cost savings of 53,000 USD per slot compared to the conventional slot. This paper discusses the design and execution strategy of the paste slot method in underground paste backfill operations. It highlights the advantages of the method, shares operational insights gained during implementation, and showcases its potential applicability to other mines across Canada and globally.

"The stability of calcium arsenate is discussed in relation to the possible misuse of lime in the treatment of gold processing waste waters. Stability diagrams have been derived and experimental results cited to show that calcium arsenate has a higher solubility in neutral to alkaline solution than has previously been recognized and this solubility is further enhanced by the presence of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate or carbonate.IntroductionThe removal of arsenic from gold mine waste waters has been of interest for more than thirty years, but with the recent emphasis on clean water standards there has been renewed activity in relation to that problem. The processing of gold-bearing sulphides which contain arsenopyrite and other complex arsenic sulphides is well established. Initial roasting to oxidize the sulphides leaves the arsenic in the form of both arsenic and arsenic, in which forms it is soluble in the subsequent leaching stage. Further oxidation of the leach liquors is required before the well-established procedure of precipitating calcium arsenate with lime, which is carried out despite an immense lack of knowledge of the calcium-arsenic-water system.The solubility product and free energy of formation for Ca3(AsO4)2, which are to be found in recent and reliable sources of data, originate from the work of Chukhlansev, whose experimental determination of the concentration of calcium from the solubility of calcium arsenate in solutions of various pH yields the results plotted in Figure 1. This is the work which has resulted in a wide acceptance of the ""insolubility"" of calcium arsenate and the use of lime to stabilize arsenic in that form.Laguitton attempted to further elucidate the chemistry of the lime addition method for treating arsenical waste waters from gold processing operations. The low solubility product for Ca3(AsO4)2 was the basis for his examination of likely chemical equilibria in the system. Laguitton and other workers have not considered atmospheric carbon dioxide as an important component in this system."

The Shortage of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers I N many parts of the Western World attention has recently been drawn to the acute shortage of mining and metallurgical engineers produced by the universities. Naturally, the reasons for this shortage have been discussed, and various remedies for it have been proposed. In this paper, I want to examine some of them. It is now fairly generally ac-cepted among mining men that the easy attractions of modern urban life have left the career of mining in the metaphorical as well as in the literal backwoods. The industry finds it increasingly difficult to recruit adventurous and intelligent young men; for such men now seek their intellectual, if not physical, adventure in more glamorous occupations from a safe social base in suburbia. The salaries, opportunities and security offered by the mining industry do not complete effectively with the rewards offered by other industries and by commerce, taking into account the social disadvantages of a mining life. "A program of mapping, sampling and testing to determine the potential of the aggregate resources throughout Newfoundland and Labrador was commenced in 1978. A 6-km-wide corridor parallel to all transportation routes was selected as the study area.The study consisted of a preliminary surficial interpretation followed by field mapping and sampling. Granular resources were sampled at a 500-m interval and non-granular materials were sampled at a 1.5- to 2-km interval. Data were gathered on landforms and stratigraphy as well as a field description of the sample and deposit types. Particle-size and lithologic analyses of the samples were also conducted.The locations of samples and deposits were mapped on 1:50,000 topographic base maps and summarized for publication at a 1:250,000 scale. Surficial geology maps were produced at a 1:50,000 scale. A computer program is being developed for the search and retrieval of field data.The first phase of the Inventory of Aggregate Resources program is nearing completion and to date has collected information on approximately 9,500 samples throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This data will be used to provide f or the effective management of these vital non-renewable aggregate resources.The mineral aggregate industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is very competitive, but undercapitalized when compared to other provinces. The demand for aggregates is forecasted to increase to in excess of23 million tons per annum by the year 2002.In terms of over-all mineral production, the extraction of sand, gravel and stone has a significant impact when compared to other minerals in terms of value and tonnage produced.IntroductionThe province of Newfoundland has approximately 18,000 km of coastline. A large proportion of the population lives in coastal communities where, traditionally, beaches have been a major source of construction materials. Beaches have, therefore, often been subjected to overutilization, resulting in erosion of back beach areas or adjacent headlands."

In this paper microstructural development of nitride-Bonded SIC refractories is reported in presence of Al203, Mg() and Urea additives .The samples were prepared by mixing, shaping and firing at 1400-1500°c in a controlled atmosphere furnace. Phase analysis, microscopic observation and mechanical evaluation were taken for microstructural investigations. The strength of samples doped with Al203 was first increased and then decreased at higher amount of Al2O3 additions. The addition of MgO decreased the strength while the urea showed an improving effect on strength. These phenomena could be attributed to microstructural evolution and mainly to liquid phase formation and grain morphology. It was found that the additives such as Al203, MO and urea could modify the microstructure in terms of phase formation and texture modification, which in terms influences the mechanical behavior.

"This paper describes the simultaneous sinking and equipping of a 4.9 m diameter concrete-lined shaft to a projected depth of 1660 m. The shaft blast design utilizes the full face method using a parallel hole burn cut. Hydraulic drilling and a totally redesigned Cryderman-type mucking unit were integrated into the four deck sinking stage to provide for drilling, mucking, concreting and shaft steel equipping operations. A safety program was tailored and implemented specifically for this shaft sinking project.IntroductionIn July 1988, Falconbridge Limited commenced development of its Thayer Lindsley exploration site located some four km north of Sudbury on Regional Road 80.The first phase of this project was awarded to J .S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited and the scope of work included the engineering and project management to construct a surface plant capable of supporting a shaft sinking and exploration program for potential future mine development. This initial phase of the project was completed on schedule and under budget on December 23, 1988, and is the subject of an independent paper.In November 1988, J.S. Redpath Limited was awarded the shaft sinking and exploration phase of this project. The scope of work consisted of sinking and equipping a 4.9 m diameter shaft to a depth of 1660 m and carrying out the development and diamond drilling on two levels. This work was scheduled to be completed by November 1991.The T .L. Exploration Project is located toward the eastern end of the south range of the Sudbury basin, north of Sudbury. Figure 1 details the projected mining area and the shaft location on the geological complex. Figure 2 is a section showing the exploration shaft that is located in the Norite. Two levels will be developed from this shaft, on the 1310m and 1588 m levels, to provide access for further geological examination of the ore bodies."

"Several years ago computer control of the flotation process was successfully implemented at the Matagami concentrator of Noranda Mines Inc. At that time this was the first computer application being installed at this operation. The last few years have seen an extensive use of programmable controllers in areas such as the copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system. With the aid of such instruments, these areas have attained a high level of automation and as a result, a high degree of efficiency. The controllers have proven to be very dependable and easy to use.IntroductionThe Matagarni Division of Noranda Mines Inc. operates two mines in the Matagami District of northwestern Quebec which is located about 650 km northwest of Montreal. The mines ship ores to a central concentrator whose throughput averages 95,000 tonnes of ore per month. Metal contents of the mill feed average 0.9 per cent copper and 5.0 per cent zinc. Concentrate outputs are approximately 3,200 tonnes of copper and 8,200 tonnes of zinc per month.The concentrator commenced operation in 1963. An on-stream X-ray analyzer was installed in 1968, providing analyses of several samples in the flotation circuit without the aid of a computer. In 1974, control of the circuit by computer was added to the system. As a result, zinc flotation efficiency improved considerably and reagent costs decreased through the reduction of copper sulphate consumption.In the past few years it was realized that significant improvements could also be made in other parts of the operation . Copper and zinc dewatering circuits and the lime preparation system were identified as major areas that could drastically benefit from automation. In 1982, programmable controllers were seriously considered as an attractive alternative for achieving the company 's goal. Because of their relative lowcost and their high degree of flexibility, they were selected for implementing automation and, for improving the efficiency in each of these areas."

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. "In 1991, the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment (CCME) charged its Waste Management Task Group with developing a nationally coordinated strategy to measure, monitor, and achieve the objective of decreasing the generation of waste (solid and hazardous) by50% from 1988 levels by the year 2000.With the encouragement of the CCME, which viewed hazardous waste as largely an industry problem, a committee, the “Industry Action Group”, representing eleven industry trade associations with a strong interest and involvement in hazardous waste was recruited.The Municipality of Markham, Ontario was also recruited (Appendix 1)."

"British Steel has increased its usage of stainless steel for bunker, silo and chute linings to reduce maintenance costs and improve productivity.A generation of low cost 12% Cr steels has been specifically developed to satisfy the needs of hardness, flow promotion and through life costing which are demanded by bulk solids handling industries.The range of stainless steels include:• a very hard martensitic grade which is particularly suitable for high stress applications where impact and abrasion are predominant;• a titanium stabilized duplex steel for structural applications, as well as low friction , medium abrasion resistant wear liner plate; and• a ferritic stainless steel with rubber backing for low stress application where flow promotion of product is the predominant requirement.Industrial applications and experiences along with methods of fixin g the stainless steels will be discussed in conjunction with the relative through-life costs of the products.IntroductionBritish Steel has become one of the most efficient steel manufacturers in the world, with improvements seen in productivity, quality, delivery, performance and response to the needs of the worldwide market place.Part of this success stems from reductions in engineering downtime in the key areas of its operations, by the introduction of better engineering design and the use of enhanced materials where significant cost benefits have been identified.The nature of producing iron and steel requires the use and handling of a number of raw materials with wide ranging properties, each calling for a different approach to solving the difficulties encountered in storing and transporting these materials to their respective point of use. Figure 1 shows steel production for 1988-89 where over 30 million tonnes of raw materials were handled in making 14 million tonnes of liquid steel at British Steel's five integrated works.Typically solid raw materials include, iron ore, coal, limestone, ferro alloys and scrap. Intermediate products such as coke and sinter create their own specific handling and wear problems.Coals and ores are shipped into the United Kingdom from several sources, and have a great variety of properties. Some coals can be extremely wet and sticky, whereas others are dry and dusty . The ores handled can vary from wet concentrate and fines to heavy angular rubble and pellets. These raw materials are off-loaded, stored and conveyed through British Steel's own port facilities at Port Talbot, Immingham, Redcar and Hunterston. British Steel also produces the majority of its own coke and all its own sinter. Coke and sinter are frequently handled at elevated temperatures which cause other handling problems."

"IntroductionWestar Mining Ltd. is Canada's largest producer of metallurgical coal for the export market. It currently operates two mines, the Balmer Mine at Sparwood, British Columbia producing 6 000 000 tonnes per year and the Greenhills operation at Elkford, producing 2 100000 tonnes per year. Approximately 1600 people are employed between the two mines which operate independently but share common administrative services.Like most mining companies in Canada over the past three or four years, Westar has faced rising production costs along with flat or declining prices and demand for its products. In order to survive under these conditions it has become necessary to strive for decreased costs in any way possible. Over the past two years there has been a widespread introduction of microcomputers across the company. In order to satisfy increasing demand for accurate and pertinent information while at the same time increasing productivity, the microcomputer has become an invaluable tool.This paper describes some of the problems faced by a mine maintenance department in this operating climate and how they were solved with the help of a microcomputer. It also describes some of the problems that may be encountered both with equipment and people and recommends some ways that these might be minimized or avoided. Finally, an assessment of whether or not the move to microcomputers was a current and economical one, and a brief description of future plans and projects is given.The Maintenance OrganizationIn order to appreciate fully the role that microcomputers are playing within the Maintenance Department at Westar Mining, a little background on the organization and operating philosophies is in order. Most of the comments apply directly to the Balmer operations, however, the Greenhills operation is similar in concept.The mine maintenance organization operates on a fleet based concept with these departments reporting to the maintenance superintendent: haulage trucks, shovels and drills, loaders and Caterpillar equipment, maintenance services, and rebuild services.Each of these departments is headed by an assistant superintendent and is responsible for all maintenance on the equipment on the respective fleet. Shift foreman, planners, specialists and clerical staff are assigned to each fleet. A central engineering and administrative group consisting of one engineer and three clerical positions is responsible for maintenance engineering and centralized administrative services"

Mining companies normally establish exploration and research programs originated with actions in embryonic stage. At their early stages of development, these exploration and technological activities are subject to uncertainties that need, first, to be resolved, deciphered or, at least, mitigated for information reporting; and later, for valuation reporting. Under these circumstances, these exploration activities follow a sequence of development phases that range from exploration work to the profile, conceptual, and finally to basic engineering phases and construction. For information reporting, the International Template for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves integrates the minimum standards being adopted by the relevant professional bodies in Australia, Canada, South Africa, Chile, USA, UK, Ireland, and other European countries which set up the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO, www.crirsco.com). These standards are based on the progressive collection of relevant information to reduce present and future uncertainties over time under a context of transparency, materiality, and technical competence. For valuation reporting several procedures have been disclosed and applied. However, in the last decades financial instruments such as real options, decision analysis, and games theory have developed into a niche of great potential for mine valuation applications. The objective of this paper is to provide a summary of the information reporting standards prepared by the Chilean National Commission for the Qualification of Competent Persons in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and show a procedure and an application of real options to the valuation of the sequential development phases of a mine asset from the exploration stage through up to full development.
